For the first time in five years, Mike Lowell will not be your starting third baseman for your Boston Red Sox. The question remains if he’ll even be a part of the 25 man roster when the Red Sox break camp.

Last year, the Red Sox almost had to trade Lowell if they had acquired current Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira in free agency. During the offseason this year, Lowell was very close to being a member of the Texas Rangers. But an injury to his thumb caused the deal to be nixed.

Mike Lowell - AP PhotoLowell doesn’t want our sympathy. though. He understands the game and how it works.

I’m very comfortable with where I am in my real life. I’m in a tremendously privileged situation. No one needs to feel sorry for me in life. Is my baseball situation ideal? No, it’s less than ideal and I don’t want to diminish the baseball side. But you never know what can happen. When I left the Marlins I was really disappointed and this turned out to be a really good situation for me.

We’ll see. You never know what’s going to happen.

Lowell is a true professional and I can honestly say I’ll root for him where ever he ends. He’s meant a lot to the Red Sox. He’s played through injuries galore and in this day and age, you just don’t see that to often.

You know the Red Sox will do the right thing to make sure he’s able to finish out a great career.

Where that is, who knows.

After his meeting with the media, Lowell also sat down with Tom Caron and Peter Gammons. And after watching the video below, don’t forget to check out part 2 and part 3.
