There was a lot of talk over the offseason on how weak the Boston Red Sox pitching staff might be especially with Clay Buchholz as the anchor of the rotation. If Buchholz’s opening day start is any indication of how things may go, the Red Sox are definitely in good shape.

Behind seven shutout innings from Buchholz and five home runs, the Red Sox beat Cole Hamels and the Philadelphia Phillies 8-0 to open up the season.

Hanley Ramirez made his return to the Red Sox an eventful one as he had two home runs, including a broken bat grand slam in the 9th inning. Dustin Pedroia homered in his first AB of 2015 and added another as part of his three hits.

The hot hitting of Mookie Betts carried over into the regular season as he had two hits from atop the Red Sox lineup, including a home run as well.

Video: Did UConn’s Morgan Tuck Play With a Chip On Her Shoulder?

UConn women’s basketball player Morgan Tuck certainly played like an All-American this season after sitting out last year with a knee injury. But when the All-American teams came out over this past week, Tuck’s name was no where to be found except as an honorable mention All-America from the AP.

While it is hard to be recognized when you play with the likes of Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis, Breanna Stewart and Moriah Jefferson, Tuck deserves the same attention they receive. For those who watched her play this season, they know how good Tuck really is.

And now that’s she has been snubbed by the writers and the coaches, the world is finding out just how good Morgan Tuck really is.

Watch and/or listen below as the UConn women’s basketball team as well as head coach Geno Auriemma talk about whether or not Morgan Tuck had a chip on her shoulder against Maryland in the Final Four.

If you hadn’t heard, New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter is retiring at the end of the 2014 season, which for his team, is today. So before his final game in the “rivalry”, the Boston Red Sox paid tribute to Jeter with a ceremony that only the Red Sox can do.

Video: UConn QB Tim Boyle’s Role For 2014

UConn QB Tim Boyle (14) throws a pass during practice.

UConn Huskies head coach Bob Diaco had an interesting dilemma on his hands. He had three starting quarterbacks coming back for his team in Tim Boyle, Casey Cochran and Chandler Whitmer.

As a true freshman in 2013, Boyle saw action in five games, starting four before being replaced by Cochran for the final four games of the season.

While I can’t say what Diaco was thinking, the general thought was that Boyle would sit out this year gaining an extra year of eligibility. Normally most freshman don’t play, earning a redshirt year. Basically what this all means is that all college athletes have five years to play four.

With Boyle, he still has four years to play three. So to me, it wasn’t a surprise when Diaco announced that Boyle was “going to be protected” this year.

What Diaco means is that if Boyle doesn’t have to play, he won’t. But if he does, he’ll be ready to come in.

Watch below as Diaco explains the situation with Boyle and also Boyle’s reaction to the news.

I’m pretty sure we can all agree on one thing right now. The Boston Red Sox are not a fun team to watch this season.

After being shutout last night by the Baltimore Orioles 6-0, they finished their nine-game, ten day road trip with a 2-7 record. Things were so bad in the home of The Wire where they managed one measly run. Of course that one run got them a victory but one run people, one freaking run.

The Orioles did most of their damage in the 1st innings off of Rubby De La Rosa when they scored three runs. One on an Adam Jones double. Jones came into score on a Chris Davis blast. After that De La Rosa seemed to settle down a little bit.

And according to ESPN analyst Rick Sutcliffe, part of the reason why De La Rosa may be struggling lately is that it’s entirely possible he is tipping his pitches. Of course he talked about this during the game and if anyone in the Orioles clubhouse was watching, they could relayed a message to the hitters.

Either way, it’s something for the Red Sox to look at and correct with their young flamethrower if true.

Dustin Pedroia led the Red Sox with two hits. David Ortiz and A.J. Pierzynski had the others.

The Red Sox head back to home to face the Cleveland Indians for four games. The Indians swept the Red Sox at the beginning of the 2-7 road trip.

Video: Workman Strong in Red Sox 1-0 Win Over Orioles

Teammates greet Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Brandon Workman (67) as he walks off the field at the end of the sixth inning of a baseball game against the Baltimore Orioles, Tuesday, June 10, 2014, in Baltimore.

The Boston Red Sox are reeling right, there’s no doubt about that. They’ve had issues with the backend of their rotation between Clay Buchholz and Felix Doubront. Brandon Workman and Rubby De La Rosa have been filling in for them while they heal up from their respective injuries.

De La Rosa’s sample size is too small right now but Workman’s hasn’t been. In each of his three previous starts, he’s given the Red Sox some solid work. Last night was no different.

Workman allowed no hits over 5 ⅔ innings before allowing a single to Ryan Flaherty. He would end up going 6 ⅔ innings and the bullpen would do the job the rest of the way as the Red Sox beat the Baltimore Orioles 1-0 at Oriole Park at Camden Yards on Tuesday night.

The interesting part about Workman’s longest outing of his 27 game big league career is the fact that he had to wait out two rain delays in the 2nd inning. The first one was 15 minutes long while the second one lasted one hour and 18 minutes.

Andrew Miller, Junichi Tazawa and Koji Uehara combined to finish off the O’s with Uehara picking up his 13th save of the season.

Mike Napoli provided the only run of the night when he singled in Brock Holt from second base in the 3rd inning. Holt continues to provide a spark at the top of the lineup as he went 2-for-5 with a run scored. A.J. Pierzynski also had two hits.
