2012 NCAA Women’s Basketball Rankings – Week 5 (Dec. 13)

AP & ESPN/USA Today Coaches' Polls

The NCAA women’s basketball rankings are out for the week and the UConn Huskies find themselves as the No. 2 in the team behind the Baylor Lady Bears.

Of course those two teams will matchup in Waco, TX on Sunday night at 8:30 p.m. on ESPN so it’s quite possible we could have a new No. 1 team in women’s basketball. Or the Huskies will drop a spot or two in the poll. I’m hoping for the former and not the latter myself.

Baylor and UConn are followed in the top five by Notre Dame, Stanford and Maryland in the AP Poll. In the top five of the ESPN/USA Today Coaches’ Poll, they are followed by Notre Dame, Stanford and Duke.

Joining the Huskies and Fighting Irish in the top 25 from the Big East are the Rutgers Scarlet Knights (11/11), Louisville Cardinals (14/13), Georgetown Hoyas (17/19) and the DePaul Blue Demons (23/21).

There are no Big East teams among the others receiving votes in the AP Poll. West Virginia and Villanova are among the others receiving votes in the coaches’ poll.

2012 NCAA Women’s Basketball Rankings – Week 1 (Nov. 15)

AP & ESPN/USA Today Coaches Polls

The NCAA women’s basketball rankings came out on Tuesday for the first time since the preseason and the UConn Huskies women’s team still finds themselves as the No. 4 team in both polls.

There are no changes to the top five in either poll which are the same. Texas A&M is ranked No. 1 and is followed by Notre Dame, Tennessee, UConn and Stanford.

Joining the Irish and Huskies in the top 25 from the Big East are the Louisville Cardinals (9/10), Georgetown Hoyas (14/16), Rutgers Scarlet Knights (15/15) and DePaul Blue Demons (18/18).

The St. John’s Red Storm are the only team from the Big East among the others receiving votes in both polls. The Villanova Wildcats, Syracuse Orange and Marquette Golden Eagles are among the others receiving votes in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches’ Poll.

The polls actually came out yesterday and it totally slipped my mind. With that said, the records of the teams may not reflect their current record if they played on Tuesday night.

Given the fact that Maya Moore has graduated from UConn, we really couldn’t expect the UConn Huskies women’s basketball team to be ranked No. 1 when the 2011-12 AP Top 25 Preseason poll. And they weren’t as they are ranked No. 4 to start the season.

AP Top 25For the first time ever, the Baylor Lady Bears are ranked No. 1 to start the season. They are followed in the poll by Notre Dame, Tennesse, UConn and Stanford.

“The coaches who were selected by their peers to choose this year’s State Farm Coaches’ All-America Team debated for one-and-a-half days, which is the longest deliberation I can recall in my 15 years with this organization,” said WBCA CEO Beth Bass.  “Their commitment and hard work is a testament to the forethought, conscientiousness and professionalism of the committee.  Because of their effort I know, without a doubt, that these 10 players are the best in women’s basketball for 2011 and are truly deserving of this great honor.

“The committee’s job isn’t getting any easier,” Bass continued.  “And that is a good thing because it means the number of truly outstanding players they must consider each year is increasing.  It speaks volumes about where our sport is and where it’s going.”

“State Farm is truly honored to recognize these outstanding student-athletes for their wonderful achievements, their dedication to the game of basketball and their commitment to their communities,” said Pam El, Marketing Vice President for State Farm.  “The State Farm Coaches’ All-America Team represents true excellence in the sport of women’s basketball, and we are extremely proud to be associated with these remarkable student-athletes.”

2010-11 Women’s Basketball AP All-America Teams

APIn the history of the Women’s Basketball AP All-America Team, there has only been one four-time All-American in Oklahoma’s Courtney Paris. Well now she’ll have to make a little room on that elite mantle.

UConn Huskies senior Maya Moore was a unanimous choice for the 2010-11 AP All-America First Team making her the second women’s basketball player to be named four times. It’s the third straight year that Moore has been an unanimous selection.

Moore is joined on the First Team by Baylor’s Brittney Griner, Stanford’s Jeanette Pohlen, Texas A&M’s Danielle Adams and Ohio State’s Jantel Lavender.

Moore’s teammate, Tiffany Hayes, was named an Honorable Mention All-America.
