NCAA Women’s College Basketball Polls – Week 10

The NCAA women’s basketball polls are out and of course there is now doubt who the No. 1 team in the country is after last night. The UConn Huskies remain the unanimous No. 1 team in the land. I should note that North Carolina still remains No. 2 in the AP Poll because it came out on Monday. They did drop to No. 3 in the ESPN/USA Today Poll.

Both of the NCAA women’s polls are out and the UConn Huskies remain the unanimous No. 1 team in the land in the AP Poll for the 7th straight week and the ESPN/USA Today Poll for the 9th straight. The North Carolina Tar Heels are still No. 2 in the land and barring losses by either team, it will set up a 1/2 duel in Chapel Hill next Monday when the Huskies travel there for the annual MLK Day Game.

Here’s a full look at both polls.

15 Year Old High Schooler Dunking

What’s so big about a 15 year old high schooler dunking? Well, SHE is 6’6 at 15 years old and was a sophomore this past season. Her name, Brittney Griner. She has a 70 inch wingspan. Hopefully, UCONN Women’s Basketball coach Geno Auriemma has her on his radar for down the road.

Pat Summit The Cheerleader

Pat Summitt lived up to her promise to Bruce Pearl to return the favor for when he painted himself orange and sat in the student section back on January 22nd when the Lady Vols played the Dukies.

Summitt, who was wearing a cheerleaders outfit, came out hidden in the cheerleaders. She had a microphone and started to sing “Rocky Top” with the crowd. Super Bowl MVP Peyton Manning and Tennessee football coach Phillip Fulmer were seen in the crowd singing as well. When she was done singing, she put the orange and white feather hat she was wearing on Dick Vitale’s head. After that she led the crowd in some cheers with the cheerleaders.

To finish off her appearance, she, along with her assistants, formed a mini pyramid with Summitt at the top.

It was different to see the other side of Summitt. You always see her on the court with that mean look in her eye. I also think it is great how the Tennessee coaches support each other. That is not something you see at other schools too often.

Pat Summitt To Do Something “Out of Character”

Do you remember Bruce Pearl painting himself orange and cheering on the Lady Vols when they played the Dukies on January 22nd? If not, here is a picture.

Well at Tuesday night’s game when Tennessee hosts the Florida Gators, Summit is going to shed her serious side for a night and said it will be “a little out of character, a lot out of character actually.”

No word on what she is going to do but the CSTV.com article suggests she might be dressed as a cheerleader.

Personally, I think it’s great that she is going reciprocate what he had done at an earlier game. She is a very serious coach and always has the mean look to her. So it will be nice to see the softer side of Summitt.

The game is on ESPN Tuesday night and is at 9:00 PM.

Women’s Basketball Game Rained Out

On Monday night, the women’s basketball game between Arizona State and Texas Tech at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona was rained out with just over 4 minutes to play in the game. Arizona State ended up winning the game 61-45.

The reason for the rain-out. They left the roof open at Chase Field. The game was supposed to be played outdoors but even knowing the forecast they left the roof open. The game time temperature was 56 degrees. The NCAA allowed the players to wear long sleeves under their uniforms and some players were even wearing gloves on the bench.

The grounds people pulled the tarp to cover the court before it got to wet because there wasn’t enough time to get the roof shut. But because the floor got too wet, the game was cancelled and Arizona State was awarded the victory.

This was just the second outdoor basketball game ever. The last one was between the Tennessee women and Arizona State back in 2000 at Chase Field (formerly the BOB at the time.)
