American League Central

Detroit is the class of the division and has been the last couple years and will be again in 2014.  Last season we saw the resurgence in Kansas City and Cleveland start to pay off as the Indians were a wild card team and the Royals hung in well into September. For the third consecutive season there’s a new manager in the division and this time it’s in Detroit who had to replace the retired Jim Leyland.

Detroit Tigers1. Detroit – Manager Brad Ausmus (1st year)

Justin Verlander #35 of the Detroit Tigers stands on the mound during Game Three of the American League Championship Series against the Boston Red Sox at Comerica Park on October 15, 2013 in Detroit, Michigan. After losing in the ALCS to the Boston Red Sox manager Jim Leyland decided to walk away after 8 years in Detroit.  While unable to win a title in that time he did lead the Tigers to two World Series appearances.  Taking over is Dartmouth College grad and CT native Brad Ausmus who is considered one of the top young baseball people in the game.  The Tiger lineup has a few changes with Prince Fielder in Texas as Ian Kinsler came over in the deal, back-to-back AL MVP Miguel Cabrera moved from 3B to 1B and the left side of the infield is young with 3B Nick Castellanos and SS Jose Iglesias. The rotation is top notch as they had another AL CYA winner in Max Scherzer and the backend issue has been solved by signing FA closer Joe Nathan.

Kansas City Royals2. Kansas City – Manager Ned Yost (5th year/11th overall)

Eric Hosmer #35 of the Kansas CIty Royals rounds second base after hitting a solo home run to left field in the third inning of game one of the double header against the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park on August 16, 2013 in Detroit, Michigan. The Royals contended in 2013 nearly to the end before falling off and I expect the same this year as they and the Indians will battle for second in the division and one of the two AL Wild Card spots.  Kansas City strengthened the rotation by adding Jason Vargas and bringing back Bruce Chen and the top of the order by adding Norichika Aoki and Omar InfanteBilly Butler could find himself as deadline bait should they need an arm or a bat.  Kansas City and Cleveland are really kind of 2A and 2B in this division and closer to Detroit than to Chicago and Minnesota.

Home Field: Kauffman Stadium; Playing Surface: natural grass; Opened: 1973; Capacity: 37,903

Cleveland Indians3. Cleveland – Manager Terry Francona (2nd year/14th overall)

Justin Masterson #63 of the Cleveland Indians reacts to giving up a double to Brian Dozier #2 of the Minnesota Twins during the seventh inning of the game on July 21, 2013 at Target Field in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Indians made a nice run in 2013 earning a wild card in the first year under Terry Francona.  Now they need some more of that magic and for the pitching both in the rotation and the bullpen to help carry them.  They could probably use another big bat in the middle of the lineup and may peddle SS Asdrubal Cabrera in a package to try to get one near the deadline because prospect SS Francisco Lindor appears ready to make the jump.  The Indians surprise move of the winter is they’ve announced they are moving Carlos Santana, one time catching prospect, from the DH/1B slot to the teams every day 3B. Really. With that I’d imagine they will try to get 43 year old Jason Giambi into the lineup more regular as the DH. Does this really make them a better team?

Home Field: Progressive Field; Playing Surface: natural grass; Opened: 1994; Capacity: 42,241

2013 Attendance: 1,572,926 (14th in AL)

Games against Red Sox in 2014: June 12-15; June 2-4

Chicago White Sox4. Chicago – Manager Robin Ventura (3rd year)

of the Chicago White Sox Chris Sale #49 reacts to giving up a solo home run to Matt Carson #7 of the Cleveland Indians during in the fifth inning of their MLB game at U.S. Cellular Field on September 15, 2013 in Chicago, Illinois. The White Sox made an effort this off season to strengthen the corners of the infield by signing Cuban FA 1B Jose Abreu and getting 3B Matt Davidson a former 1st round pick from Arizona for RP Addison Reed.  They also changed their CF by getting Adam Eaton in the three way deal with the Diamondbacks and Angels that saw Mark Trumbo and Tyler Skaggs switch uniforms too.  So Rick Hahn has injected 3 good young players into the lineup and if the bullpen performs as it did last season, they could see an improvement in the standings.

Home Field: U.S. Cellular Field; Playing Surface: natural grass Opened: 1991; Capacity: 40,615

2013 Attendance: 1,768,413 (10th in AL)

Possible rotation: Sale; Quintana; Danks; Johnson; Paulino

Games against Red Sox in 2014: July 7-10; April 15-17

Minnesota Twins5. Minnesota – Manager Ron Gardenhire (13th year)

Joe Mauer #7 of the Minnesota Twins reacts to striking out against the Cleveland Indians during the first inning of the game on July 21, 2013 at Target Field in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Twins have a beautiful ball park and some loyal fans and they’ll need both to continue to draw because if they don’t get big contributions from free agent signees SP Ricky Nolasco and SP Phil Hughes, they will sink and quickly.  They only have 2 prospects at AAA but one, SP Alex Meyer, has a chance to be a starter and you could see him by June.  After that 6 of the remaining Top 10 are High A level ballplayers or lower, so help from within isn’t coming anytime soon.  They’ve also moved All-Star and batting champ Joe Mauer from C to 1B and brought in Kurt Suzuki to catch. Suzuki is above average but he isn’t Mauer in any aspect of his game.  The move should help keep Mauer healthy which is the most important thing for the Twins.

Home Field: Target Field; Playing Surface: natural grass; Opened: 2010; Capacity: 39,021

2013 Attendance: 2,477,644 (7th in AL)

Key Players: 1B Joe Mauer; LF Josh Willingham; SP Ricky Nolasco; RP Glen Perkins

National League Central

This division was one of the most difficult to pick because the top three teams are very good.  Like 2013 we should see all three battle the entire season and quite possibly take 3 of the 5 NL playoff spots between the division champ and the two wild card teams.  Last year St. Louis claimed the division, while Pittsburgh and Cincinnati were the NL wild card teams.  Baseball is rejuvenated in the NL Central thanks to those three teams who should be perennial playoff teams for the next few years at least.  If you’re a fan of the Brewers things may be starting to look up a bit.  Cubs fans I’m afraid you’re going to have to wait a while longer for your team to crack the upper echelon of this division.  There’s two new managers in the division after Cincinnati felt Dusty Baker couldn’t get them over the hump, and in Chicago, they replaced a poor fit in Dale Sveum.

Last year I went Cincinnati, St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Milwaukee and Chicago.  Look below this year to see how I think it will play out in 2014.

St. Louis Cardinals1. St. Louis – Manager: Mike Matheny (3rd year)

Yadier Molina #4 of the St. Louis Cardinals looks on against the Boston Red Sox during Game Six of the 2013 World Series at Fenway Park on October 30, 2013 in Boston, Massachusetts. The Cardinals are the defending Nation League Champions having lost to the Boston Red Sox in the World Series for the 2nd time in 10 years and no one should expect them to go away.  This Cardinals team despite trading away David Freese and losing Carlos Beltran to free agency and Chris Carpenter to retirement, just keeps reinventing themselves year after year.  They are extremely deep with pitching, and potent with the bat. They should be good defensively even with a reconfigured infield that see’s the addition of Kolten Wong and PED poster child Jhonny Peralta.  The only weakness I see is the bench and unless one or more of those guys is pressed into everyday service they should be just fine in the NL Central.  Their pitching makes them the class of the division and along with the Dodgers one of the best teams in the NL.

Home Field: Busch Stadium III; Playing Surface: natural grass; Opened: 2006; Capacity: 43,975

2013 Attendance: 3,369,769 (2nd in NL)

Key Players: C Yadier Molina; 3B Matt Carpenter; LF Matt Holliday; SP Adam Wainwright; SP Michael Wacha

MVP Candidate: C Yadier Molina

Cy Young Candidate: SP Adam Wainwright

ROY Candidate: 2B Kolten Wong; RP Carlos Martinez

Key Additions: CF Peter Burjos; SS Jhonny Peralta; 2B Mark Ellis; RP Angel Castro

Possible lineup: Carpenter 3B; Burjos CF; Holliday LF; Craig RF; Adams 1B; Molina C; Peralta SS; Wong 2B

Possible rotation: Wainwright; Wacha; Miller; Kelley; Garcia

Games against Red Sox in 2014: August 5-7

Pittsburgh Pirates2. Pittsburgh – Manager: Clint Hurdle (4th year/12th overall)

Andrew McCutchen #22 of the Pittsburgh Pirates at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington on September 11, 2013 in Arlington, Texas. They stopped the streak at 20. After 20 consecutive non-playoff seasons and 20 seasons without a NL MVP, the Pittsburgh Pirates and CF Andrew McCutchen stopped both streaks dead in their tracks. Baseball has returned to the ‘Burgh in one of baseball’s best parks and they were a lot of fun to watch in 2013.  Now Clint Hurdle needs to continue to build on that momentum and take them not only back to the playoffs but further.  There’s no reason this team can’t play for the NL Pennant in 2014.  My only concern is they seemed to really stand pat in the offseason. I’d have loved to see them get an additonal starating pitcher, a stronger RF or 1B candidate and possibly near the deadline they will.

Home Field: PNC Park; Playing Surface: natural grass Opened: 2001; Capacity: 38,362

2013 Attendance: 2,256,862 (11th in NL)

Possible lineup: Marte LF; Mercer SS; McCutchen CF; Alvarez 3B; Martin C; Walker 2B; Tabata RF; Sanchez 1B

Possible rotation: Liriano; Cole; Rodriguez; Morton; Volquez

Games against Red Sox in 2014: September 16-18

Cincinnati Reds3. Cincinnati – Manager: Bryan Price (1st Year)

The Reds should compete once again for the division and wild card berth and will do so every year for the next several years.  They have a solid core of young players, good veteran’s and a new manager who comes from a pitching background and a staff that has a style that fits well with the make up of the club. They like the Pirates did very little in the offseason and they really want to improve on their post season experience after they were disappointed with the one and done wild card game loss to Pittsburgh.  They have some questions in LF as well as up the middle in CF and C and because of this I have them third in the division.

Home Field: Great American Ball Park; Playing Surface: natural grass; Opened: 2003; Capacity: 42,319

2013 Attendance: 2,492,059 (10th in NL)

Key Players: 1B Joey Votto; 2B Brandon Phillips; RF Jay Bruce; P Johnny Cueto; CF Billy Hamilton

MVP Candidate: 1B Joey Votto

ROY Candidate: OF Billy Hamilton

Key Additions: Mgr. Bryan Price; CF Billy Hamilton; C Brayan Pena; IF/OF Skip Schumaker; SP Jeff Francis; SP Chien-Ming Wang; RP Pedro Beato; RP Brett Marshall

Possible lineup: Hamilton CF; Cozart SS; Votto 1B; Phillips 2B; Bruce RF; Ludwick LF; Frazier 3B; Mesoraco C

Possible rotation: Cueto; Latos; Bailey; Leake; Cingrani

Games against Red Sox in 2014: May 6-7; August 12-13

Milwaukee Brewers4. Milwaukee – Manager: Ron Roenicke (4th year)

Pitcher Yovani Gallardo #49 of the Milwaukee Brewers throws against the Miami Marlins during the first inning at Marlins Park on June 10, 2013 in Miami, Florida. Ryan Braun, the former MVP, liar and admitted PED user returns with a clean slate and for Brewers fans hopefully a clean pee test in 2014.  The Brewers need him for a full season badly as he adds the big bat in the order, but without the chemicals we need to see how good the wood will be.  Milwaukee did solidify their starting rotation when in late January they went and signed FA Matt Garza who will pitch behind Yovani Gallardo.  A couple things really stand out with this team. The rotation is all right handed and there’s barely a left-handed bat (3) to be found on the projected 25-man roster (no switch-hitters). That lack of flexability for Mgr. Ron Roenicke to mix/match in late innings could spell disaster.

Home Field: Miller Park; Playing Surface: natural grass/retractable roof; Opened:2001; Capacity: 41,900

2013 Attendance: 2,531,105 (9th in NL)

Key Players: LF Ryan Braun; SP Yovani Gallardo; SP Matt Garza; SS Jean Segura

MVP Candidate: LF Ryan Braun

Cy Young Candidate: SP Yovani Gallardo

ROY Candidate: P Johnny Hellweg

Key Additions: SP Matt Garza; RP Francisco Rodriguez; 1B/3B Mark Reynolds; RP Will Smith; 1B Lyle Overbay

Possible lineup: Segura SS; Weeks 2B; Braun LF; Ramirez 3B; Gomez CF; Lucroy C; Davis RF

Possible rotation: Gallardo; Garza; Lohse; Estrada; Peralta

Games against Red Sox in 2014: April 4-6

Chicago Cubs5. Chicago – Manager: Rick Renteria (1st year)

Jeff Samardzija #29 of the Chicago Cubs delivers a pitch during the first inning against the Pittsburgh Pirates on May 22, 2013 at PNC Park in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Year Three of the “Theo Epstein Project” (that should be the name of his band) and now the Cub faithful are starting to get restless and introducing “Clark the Cub” didn’t help matters.  Then they lost out on Masahiro Tanaka and people are getting grumpy again on the North Side.  The Ricketts family has money to spend and they are doing things in and around historic Wrigley Field except pulling that prized free agent that opens the floodgates for others to follow.  Epstein along with GM Jed Hoyer are working feverishly to build the farm system but even that was worse than they originally thought.  Chicago has a good MLB core of SP Jeff Samardzija, 1B Anthony Rizzo, 2B Darwin Barney and SS Starlin Castro. Here’s hoping former UConn Husky 3B/OF Mike Olt gets to make a difference with Chicago in 2014.

Home Field: Wrigley Field; Playing Surface: natural grass; Opened: 1914; Capacity: 41,019

2013 Attendance: 2,642,682 (7th in NL)

American League West

There is a lot of change in Seattle this offseason, new manager, big free agent signing, signed a closer and made a nice trade with Miami and the Mariners are posed to start a move up in the AL West.  In their way will be Oakland and Los Angeles who will fight for the division with the Mariners just on the outside as Texas falls down to fourth.  The Rangers aren’t as deep as they once were and the rotation and bullpen have many questions.  Houston will just try not lose to 100 games again and make up some ground against their division opponents who beat them up all season in 2013.

Oakland A's1. Oakland – Manager Bob Melvin (4th year/11th overall)

Yoenis Cespedes #52 of the Oakland Athletics hits a single in the fifth inning against the Detroit Tigers during Game Two of the American League Division Series at O.co Coliseum on October 5, 2013 in Oakland, California. For two years in a row the unassuming Oakland A’s have captured the AL West over the divisions big brothers the Los Angeles Angels and Texas Rangers.  Can they make it three in a row?  Biggest changes for the A’s are adding FA SP Scott Kazmir to the rotation and bringing in closer Jim Johnson in a trade from Baltimore.  They will be solid as they always are and will be a factor again in the AL West.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim2. Los Angeles – Manager Mike Scoscia (15th year)

Mike Trout #27 of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim scores against the Houston Astros in the third inning on a triple off the bat of Mike Trumbo (not pictured) at Minute Maid Park on September 13, 2013 in Houston, Texas. For the first time in three offseasons the Angels didn’t make a huge free agent splash.  In 2012 they signed 1B Albert Pujols and SP C.J. Wilson, in 2013 it was OF Josh Hamilton.  This year they’ve stood pat on the big free agent move preferring to improve through a three way deal with Arizona and Chicago (AL) by moving INF/DH Mark Trumbo to the Diamondbacks for SP Tyler Skaggs and SP Hector Santiago from the White Sox.  Does it help them reclaim the west or a playoff spot?  This remains to be seen but they finally dealt from strength to improve the rotation.  They also got 3B David Freese from St. Louis to help solidify the infield.  But are those moves enough?

Seattle Mariners3. Seattle – Manager Lloyd McClendon (1st year/6th overall)

Starting pitcher Felix Hernandez #34 of the Seattle Mariners pitches against the Oakland Athletics at Safeco Field on September 27, 2013 in Seattle, Washington. Jay-Z delivered All-Star 2B Robinson Cano to Seattle this offseason but it didn’t come cheaply, 10 years for $240 M.  But Cano does give the M’s a lot of things.  Gold Glove defense, Silver Slugger offense, legit threat for a batting title and MVP candidate. Now what remains to be seen is can he deliver? Is he the leader, the star who sparks a culture change?  With the other additions this offseason of LF Logan Morrison and DH Corey Hart paired with the rotation the Mariners have anchored by Felix Hernandez and Hisashi Iwakuma (to start to season on DL) they should be able to make some noise in the west.  They won’t get a playoff spot this year but look out they’re coming and they’re bringing some young arms to back up the two big guns.  Highly thought of prospects Taijuan Walker (#1) and James Paxton (#3) are both projected for the rotation. If this team hits…watch out.

Home Field: Safeco Field; Playing Surface: natural grass/retractable roof; Opened: 1999; Capacity: 47,476

2013 Attendance: 1,761,546 (11th in AL)

* Iwakuma expected to start season on DL with finger injury. Expect Scott Baker to fill the slot.

Games against Red Sox in 2014: August 22-24; June 23-25

Texas Rangers4. Texas – Manager Ron Washington (8th year)

Adrian Beltre #29 of the Texas Rangers looks on prior to the start of the game against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim at Angel Stadium of Anaheim on September 6, 2013 in Anaheim, California. For the second season in a row we watched as the Rangers choked away the AL West.  As late as September 4, Texas led the division only to go in the tank and play some of their worst ball all season that saw them lose 13 out of the next 17 and slip to 8.5 GB in just 19 days.  Yet they were able to recover enough in the seasons last week to play in game 163 against Tampa Bay that they lost, 5-2. And now here we are in 2014 and Ron Washington still has a job and somewhere in Arlington pigs are flying. There’s a lot of questions about Texas especially in the pitching department after losing SP Derek Holland for at least half a season due to a microfracture in his knee in January. To replace Holland they signed SP Tommy Hanson in mid-February to a one-year deal.  The top half of the lineup will hit with LF Shin-Soo Choo, 1B Prince Fielder and 3B Adrian Beltre but the bottom half seems a bit weak and the bench is lacking too.  I don’t see Texas getting to the postseason and that will spell the end of Washington.

Home Field: Globe Life Park in Arlington; Playing Surface: natural grass; Opened: 1994; Capacity: 48,114

2013 Attendance: 3,178,273 (2nd in AL)

Houston Astros5. Houston – Manager Bo Porter (2nd year)

Jose Altuve #27 of the Houston Astros smiles as he heads back to the dugout after striking out in the fourth inning against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim at Minute Maid Park on September 14, 2013 in Houston, Texas. The Astros moved to AL West in 2013 and not much changed. Sure the players came and went but it didn't add up to very good baseball and they will lose a ton of games again.  The team has lost 324 games the last three seasons and you can look for another 100 losses this year.  The starting pitching has little MLB experience and they are very weak across the board in all phases’ offense, defense, pitching and their bench.  The best thing the Astros have going on the field is 2B Jose Altuve.  Also I think UConn product George Springer, the Astros #2 prospect, gets a crack in the outfield and makes the most of it.  Maybe not out of camp but sometime early in the season. The best thing the Astros have going off the field is the ownership group bringing in Reid Ryan as President last spring and this spring they added his dad Hall of Fame pitcher and former Ranger President Nolan Ryan as an executive advisor to the owner, president and GM.  It surely can’t hurt having the Ryan’s in positions of influence.

National League West

Last year it looked like the Dodgers were drowning in their money then Yasiel Puig happened both for the good and the bad.  No matter what he did on or off the field it impacted and seemingly motivated his teammates who played the best baseball in a 50 game stretch in MLB history and it led them to NL West title. While the Dodgers roared the rest of the division cowered. The Diamondbacks were the only team that was even close, while the Giants, Padres and Rockies were non-factors.  Look for the Dodgers to repeat, the Giants to make a comeback and the Diamondbacks to contend in 2014.

Los Angeles Dodgers1. Los Angeles – Manager Don Mattingly (4th year)

Clayton Kershaw #22 of the Los Angeles Dodgers looks on after throwing out Justin Upton #8 of the Atlanta Braves during Game One of the National League Division Series at Turner Field on October 3, 2013 in Atlanta, Georgia. Off to a subpar start with talk of the manager being relieved of his duties things had to change in LA.  On June 22 they were 9.5 GB and 11 games under .500. They brought in RF Yasiel Puig who energized the team and fans and in one month they were in 1st place by a 0.5 game and were 4 games over .500.  At the All-Star break they were 47-47 from that point on they played .662 ball and ran away with the NL West even though they were sub .500 against the division.  The streak saved Don Mattingly’s job and kept a lot of players in LA who may have been shipped elsewhere.  This offseason they locked up defending NL CYA SP Clayton Kershaw (7/214) and brought in RP Jamey Wright and RP Chris Perez for bullpen depth and SP’s Paul Maholm and Dan Haren to round out the rotation.  This team is loaded and if they play anywhere near like 2013 they will run away and hide.

San Francisco Giants2. San Francisco – Manager Bruce Bochy (8th year/20th overall)

Buster Posey #28 of the San Francisco Giants bats against the Colorado Rockies at AT&T Park on May 25, 2013 in San Francisco, California. 2013 started out okay in San Francisco the Giants got out to a small division lead only to have the wheels come off by mid-May.  They ended up 10 games below .500 and 16 GB of the Los Angeles Dodgers.  So what have the Giants done to correct this downward spiral of ’13? They signed FA SP Tim Hudson and FA IF/OF Michael Morse and didn’t bring back Andres Torres, Chad Gaudin and Barry Zito. Other than that they’ve kind of stood pat hoping last season was an aberration and not a trend.

Arizona Diamondbacks3. Arizona – Manager Kirk Gibson (5th year)

Paul Goldschmidt #44 of the Arizona Diamondbacks hits a solo home run during the sixth inning of a baseball game against the San Diego Padres at Petco Park on September 24, 2013 in San Diego, California. The Diamondbacks need to make the post season or Kirk Gibson’s run could be over in the desert.  Since taking over the team has finished 5th, 1st, 3rd and 2nd in NL West and had one playoff series, a 5-game loss to Milwaukee in 2011.  Gone are young hopefuls SP Tyler Skaggs and CF Adam Eaton both dealt as part of a 3-way trade for LF Mark Trumbo.  This could be a good team and will challenge for a playoff spot along with Dodgers and the Giants.  It’s up to Gibson to mold them and get them on a playoff run.

San Diego Padres4. San Diego – Manager Bud Black (8th year)

Chase Headley #7 of the San Diego Padres throw to first base on a hit by Martin Prado (not pictured) of the Arizona Diamondbacks during the second inning of a baseball game at Petco Park on September 24, 2013 in San Diego, California. It’s a known fact that the Padres struggle to score runs and working half your time in a pitchers park doesn’t help matter much.  Even with a winning record at Petco in 2013 they were still outscored in their own park. With the exception of September they were outscored every month of the season and as the season progressed the differential got worse.  Then in September they came around.  They were actually 34-32 after the All-Star break despite being outscored.  They were expecting SP Corey Luebke back but he suffered another injury in February and will have his second Tommy John surgery.  The injury could help top prospect Casey Kelly get into the five-man rotation out of camp.

Colorado Rockies5. Colorado – Manager Walt Weiss (2nd year)

Troy Tulowitzki #2 of the Colorado Rockies jumps over Mark Kotsay #14 of the San Diego Padres as he turns a double play during the fifth inning of a baseball game at Petco Park on September 6, 2013 in San Diego, California. Inconsistency lead to a last place finish for Colorado in 2013 after a 13-4 start they struggled to get near .500 at the break.  They were 28-38 from there on out and finished 20 GB the Dodgers in Walt Weiss’ first season as bench boss.  They need to improve on the road where they had a nearly MINUS 100 run differential and were 23 games under .500.  Gone is Todd Helton who retired and now this is Troy Tulowitzki’s team as he assumes the mantle as face of the franchise.  They’ve added 1B Justin Morneau, 2 starting pitchers to the rotation and strengthened the bullpen in an attempt to upgrade.

Home Field: Coors Field; Playing Surface: natural grass; Opened: 1995; Capacity: 50,480

Gigantic Sox and Dawgs 2013 MLB Preview – Day 5 – NL East

Welcome to the Gigantic Sox and Dawgs 2013 MLB preview.  Over the next few days you will get a team by team look at its key players, new faces, their potential MVP, Cy Young and Rookie of the Year candidates, their possible starting lineup and rotation as well as a quick summary.

This preview was sculpted over the off season with some mild tweaking as we went along prior to publication.  It comes from a culmination of reading many hours of baseball research.

I hope you enjoy this look at the upcoming season.  I know everyone will not agree with me and that’s fine put it in the comments or hit me up on Twitter or via email.  I can assure you I'll most likely have an argument for each and every objection that you could possibly raise.

Yesterday we looked at the AL Central, Sunday was the NL West, Monday was the AL West, Tuesday we previewed the NL Central and today it’s the NL East.

National League East

In what could possibly be an epic battle for the division, the NL East will see the Braves and Nationals go toe to toe all season with the outcome not being decided until the last weekend.  Both teams are deep in all phases and this will be baseball's best race.  The Phillies are getting old and will not be a factor at the end while the Mets and the Marlins could both lose 100 games.

Atlanta Braves1. Atlanta – Manager Fredi Gonzalez (3rd year/7th overall)

The Braves will not only challenge for the division but for a World Series appearance in 2013.  In the off season they added the Upton Brothers, B.J. via free agency and Justin via trade, to their outfield to compliment RF Jason Heyward and become a formidable trio for years to come.  The pitching should be more than solid with veteran Tim Hudson leading a young group of starters that feature Mike Minor and Julio Teheran and will only get better upon the return of Brandon Beachy.  The bullpen with Craig Kimbrel, Jonny Venters and now Jordan Walden on the back end are top notch. The one concern the team has is 2B Dan Uggla and C Brian McCann need to put 2012 behind them and return to the form of previous seasons.  McCann may have a delayed start due to off season surgery.

Brian McCann #16 of the Atlanta Braves runs the bases after hitting a solo home run in the second inning against the Washington Nationals at Nationals Park on July 21, 2012 in Washington, DC.Home Field: Turner Field

Possible lineup: Simmons SS; B. Upton CF; Heyward RF; McCann* C; J. Upton LF; Freeman 1B; Uggla 2B; Francisco 3B

*McCann may miss start of season due to injury.

*Alternate lineup: Simmons SS; B. Upton CF; Freeman 1B; J. Upton LF; Heyward RF; Uggla 2B; Francisco 3B; Laird C

Possible rotation: Hudson; Medlin; Minor; Maholm*; Teheran

*Beachy will miss part of the season recovering from TJS

*Possible rotation: Hudson; Medlin; Minor; Beachy; Teheran

Washington Nationals2. Washington – Manager Davey Johnson (3rd year/17th overall)

This will be Davey Johnson’s last ride and he will get the full Stephen Strasburg experience as the reigns have been taken off the young starter and Cy Young Candidate.  The starting rotation is solid top to bottom although the bullpen could be a bit deeper the pitching is first rate.  Although they could probably use a veteran bat off the bench they may have the best overall roster in the majors.

National League All-Star Stephen Strasburg #37 of the Washington Nationals pithces in the fourth inning during the 83rd MLB All-Star Game at Kauffman Stadium on July 10, 2012 in Kansas City, Missouri. Home Field: Nationals Park

Key Players: RF Bryce Harper; LF Jayson Werth; 3B Ryan Zimmerman SP Stephen Strasburg; RP Rafael Soriano

MVP Candidate: RF Bryce Harper

Cy Young Candidate: P Stephen Strasburg

ROY Candidate: 3B Anthony Rendon

Key Additions: CF Denard Span; SP Dan Haren; RP Rafael Soriano; RP A.J. Cole

Possible lineup: Span CF; Harper RF; Zimmerman 3B; LaRoche 1B; Werth LF; Desmond SS; Espinosa 2B; Ramos C

Possible rotation: Strasburg; G. Gonzalez; Zimmermann; Haren; Detwiler

Philadelphia Phillies3. Philadelphia – Manager Charlie Manuel (9th year/12th overall)

Phillies fans are going to be looking at an older team this season and one that is lacking in the outfield.  P Roy Halladay (36); P Cliff Lee (34) and new 3B Michael Young (35) aren’t so much so any longer as the Phils start to get a bit long in the tooth.  The starting pitching has to carry the team and get it to closer Jonathan Papelbon because the rest of the pen is very inconsistent.  The team is weak on the corners in the outfield and they will pay for that defensively.  C Carlos Ruiz is gone for 25 games for a PED suspension.

Jimmy Rollins #11 of the Philadelphia Phillies doubles to right field during the game against the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park on September 4, 2012 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Home Field: Citizens Bank Park

Key Players: SS Jimmy Rollins; 2B Chase Utley; 3B Michael Young; P Cliff Lee; RP Jonathan Papelbon

*Ruiz suspended for 25 games

*Alternate lineup: Rollins SS; Revere CF; Utley 2B; Howard 1B; Ruiz C; M. Young 3B; D. Young RF; Brown LF

Possible rotation: Lee; Hamels; Halladay; Kendrick; Lannan

New York Mets4. New York – Manager: Terry Collins (3rd year/ 9th overall)

I have heard one Mets fan say this may be the worst Mets team in his lifetime and that’s roughly 40 years going back to the glory season of 1973 when they lost in the World Series to Oakland.  They plan on building around 3B David Wright; RF Lucas Duda and 1B Ike Davis along with SP Matt Harvey.  The pitching is mostly young and inexperienced, the bullpen is wide open and there is a lot of room for improvement.  They are not a good “up the middle” team as they have holes in CF and C and the middle infield is non-descript.

David Wright #5 of the New York Mets runs to third base against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Citi Field on September 26, 2012 in the Flushing neighborhood of the Queens borough of New York City. Home Field: Citi Field

Key Players: 3B David Wright; 1B Ike Davis; RF Lucas Duda; SP Matt Harvey SP Zack Wheeler

MVP Candidate: 3B David Wright

Cy Young Candidate: P Johan Santana

ROY Candidate: P Zack Wheeler

Key Additions: C John Buck; C Travis d'Arnaud; C Anthony Recker; SP Zack Wheeler; CF Collin Cowgill; RP Brandon Lyon; SP Shaun Marcum

Possible lineup: Tejada SS; Murphy 2B; Wright 3B; Davis 1B; Duda LF; Baxter RF; Buck C; Cowgill CF

Possible rotation: Santana, Neise, Harvey; Marcum; Wheeler

Miami Marlins5. Miami – Manager Mike Redmond (1st year)

Well one season of going all out and going for it was enough for owner Jeff Loria and he had his baseball op’s people blow up the team.  It was quite the explosion as fans, media and the local politicians feel they were fleeced.  The pitching is nearly non-existent both in the rotation and the bullpen and there will be a lot of players coming in and out through the year but look for Marlins to compete with the Mets for the cellar.  The only thing good about this team is 1B Logan Morrison and RF Giancarlo Stanton and don’t look now Marlins fans but they won’t be there much longer.

Giancarlo Stanton #27 of the Miami Marlins hits a home run against the Milwaukee Brewers at Marlins Park on September 4, 2012 in Miami, Florida. Home Field: Marlins Park

American League Central

Detroit is the class of the division and has been the last couple years and will be again in 2013.  But as Minnesota flounders and Chicago isn’t what it once was, we should start to see the resurgence in Kansas City and Cleveland.  There is no time like the present for the Royals to make a jump and contend this season.

Detroit Tigers1. Detroit – Manager Jim Leyland (8th year/22nd overall)

The Tigers are on a mission and that is to get to the World Series and win.  The Lineup 2-3-4-5 is absolutely terrifying with the return of DH Victor Martinez and addition of Torii Hunter to go along with Prince Fielder and Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera.  The starting pitching and offense are solid and will make up for the lack of depth in the bullpen and the average defense.  Looks like Leyland is looking at rookie Bruce Rondon to close and he will be an important piece in solidifying the back end of the pen.

Justin Verlander #35 of the Detroit Tigers looks on against the San Francisco Giants during Game One of the Major League Baseball World Series at AT&T Park on October 24, 2012 in San Francisco, California. Home Field: Comerica Park

Key Players: 1B Prince Fielder; 3B Miguel Cabrera; C Alex Avila; P Justin Verlander; RP Bruce Rondon

MVP Candidate: 1B Prince Fielder and 3B Miguel Cabrera

Possible lineup: Jackson CF; Hunter RF; Cabrera 3B; Fielder 1B; V. Martinez DH; Dirks LF; Peralta SS; Avila C; Infante 2B

Possible rotation: Verlander; Fister; Scherzer; Sanchez; Porcello

Kansas City Royals2. Kansas City – Manager Ned Yost (4th year/10th overall)

The Royals are making another jump and if the rest of the division isn’t careful this could be a team that will sneak up on you.  Feeling like they had a good lineup but needed pitching they made a deal with Tampa Bay for starters Wade Davis and James Shields to improve in this area.  They are on a win now mission with young stars and budding pitching staff but the arms need to not only hold up but produce results.

Eric Hosmer #35 of the Kansas City Royals rounds the bases after hitting a home run during the 7th inning of the game against the Texas Rangers at Kauffman Stadium on September 6, 2012 in Kansas City, Missouri. Home Field: Kauffman Stadium

Key Players: 1B Eric Hosmer; 3B Mike Moustakas; DH Billy Butler; P James Shields; P Wade Davis

MVP Candidate: 1B Eric Hosmer

Cy Young Candidate: P James Shields

ROY Candidate: P Yordano Ventura

Key Additions: SP James Shields; SP Wade Davis; C George Kottaras; RP Guillermo Moscoso; SP Ervin Santana; RP Chris Volstad

Possible lineup: Cain CF; Escobar SS; Gordon LF; Butler DH; Moustakas 3B; Perez C; Hosmer 1B; Francouer RF; Getz 2B

Possible Rotation: Shields; Guthrie; Davis; Santana; Chen

Cleveland Indians3. Cleveland – Manager Terry Francona (1st year/13th overall)

The Indians made a dugout change bringing in former Red Sox and Phillies skipper Terry Francona as the new pilot.  Francona doesn’t need to win now but he needs to see improvement.  He has a team that is strong up the middle with C Carlos Santana, 2B Jason Kipnis, SS Asdrubal Cabrera and newly acquired CF Michael Bourn, but lacks pitching depth especially in the rotation.  He could also use some offensive help and hopes that bringing in Bourn, Nick Swisher and Mark Reynolds will help in that department.

Carlos Santana #41 of the Cleveland Indians celebrates after hitting a walk-off solo home run in the ninth inning to defeat the Minnesota Twins 6-5 at Progressive Field on September 23, 2011 in Cleveland, Ohio. Home Field: Progressive Field

Key Players: C Carlos Santana; SS Asdrubal Cabrera; CF Michael Bourn; 2B Jason Kipnis; P Justin Masterson

MVP Candidate: C Carlos Santana

Cy Young Candidate: P Justin Masterson

ROY Candidate: SP Trevor Bauer

Key Additions: Mgr Terry Francona; RF Nick Swisher; 1B Mark Reynolds INF/DH Mike Aviles; OF Drew Stubbs; SP Trevor Bauer; SP Brett Myers; RP Matt Albers; OF Ben Francisco; P Scott Kazmir; DH Jason Giambi; SP Daisuke Matsuzaka; CF Michael Bourn

Possible lineup: Bourn CF; Brantley LF; Cabrera SS; Swisher 1B; Santana C; Kipnis 2B; Reynolds DH; Chisenhall 3B; Stubbs RF

Possible rotation: Masterson; Jimenez; Myers; McAllister; Bauer

Chicago White Sox4. Chicago – Manager Robin Ventura (2nd year)

The biggest thing for the White Sox to overcome is the fact the have a lot of aging players in key spots.  Jake Peavy (32); Paul Konerko (37); Alex Rios (32) and Adam Dunn (33) are among them and last year this team faded horribly down the stretch.  The good part of this team is the emergence of Dayan Viciedo and Alejandro De Aza plus that good bullpen.

Paul Konerko #14 of the Chicago White Sox bats against the New York Yankees at U.S. Cellular Field on August 22, 2012 in Chicago, IllinoisHome Field: U.S. Cellular Field

Key Players: LF Dayan Viciedo; SS Alexei Ramirez, 1B Paul Konerko; DH Adam Dunn; P Chris Sale

MVP Candidate: LF Dayan Viciedo

Cy Young Candidate: P Chris Sale

ROY Candidate: OF Trayce Thompson

Key Additions: 3B Jeff Keppinger; 1B Lars Anderson; RP Matt Lindstrom; RP Zach Stewart

Possible lineup: De Aza CF; Keppinger 3B; Dunn DH; Konerko 1B; Rios RF; Viciedo LF; Ramirez SS; Flowers C; Beckham 2B

Possible rotation: Sale; Peavy; Danks; Floyd; Quintana

Minnesota Twins5. Minnesota – Manager Ron Gardenhire (12th year)

They had a healthy return of 1B Justin Morneau and C Joe Mauer in 2012 and they need to have that repeated.  The pair also need to rediscover their power as Morneau last hit 20+ HR in 2009 and Mauer has only 22 HRs in last 3 years after hitting 28 in ’09. This team is against it because the pitching will really decide their fate and it doesn’t look good from here.  In 2012 the starting pitching was the worst in baseball and there looks to be very little recovery there and the bullpen is just weak from top to bottom.  They need a lot of help but it’s not coming this season.

Joe Mauer #7 of the Minnesota Twins rounds the bases after hitting a solo home run against the Chicago White Sox during the first inning on September 16, 2012 at Target Field in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Home Field: Target Field

Key Players: C Joe Mauer; 1B Justin Morneau; DH Ryan Doumit; P Vance Worley; RF Josh Willingham

MVP Candidate: C Joe Mauer and 1B Justin Morneau

Cy Young Candidate: P Vance Worley

ROY Candidate: P Kyle Gibson; OF Aaron Hicks

Key Additions: P Kevin Correia; P Vance Worley: P Mike Pelfrey*; IF Tommy Field

Possible lineup: Mastroianni CF; Carroll 2B; Mauer C; Willingham LF; Morneau 1B; Doumit DH; Parmelee RF; Plouffe; Flourimon SS

Possible rotation: Worley; Correia; Hendriks; Duensing; Blackburn*

* Pelfrey had Tommy John surgery in May 2012 and will most likely miss start of the season and Nick Blackburn is a candidate to replace him until his return.

Tomorrow, in Day 5, we will preview the NL East.

Yesterday we looked at the AL West and we started on Sunday with the NL West, today it’s the NL Central.

National League Central

The NL Central after many years of belonging to St. Louis with an occasional take over by Milwaukee or Chicago looks to be going Cincinnati’s the next few years.  St. Louis will always compete for the top of the division as well as a wild card spot and now Pittsburgh is trying to take the next step and move up some as Milwaukee starts to slide.  It may be a few years yet before the Cubs once again return to playoff baseball and fans on the South Side will need to remain patient and believe in the process.

Cincinnati Reds1. Cincinnati – Manager: Dusty Baker (6th year/20th overall)

The Reds are ready to be a team that is at or near the top of the NL Central every year for the next several years.  They have a solid core of young players, good veteran’s and a staff that has a style that fits well with the make up of the club.  They do have a big bullpen change in that the plan is to move Aroldis Chapman from the closer spot into the rotation and former Dodgers closer Jonathan Broxton will handle the back end of games. They have a strong lineup especially 1-6, deep rotation and are solid defensively with no noticeable weaknesses other than they could use an additional utility infielder and a lefty reliever.

Joey Votto #19 of the Cincinnati Reds singles to center field during the game against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Great American Ball Park on September 21, 2012 in Cincinnati, Ohio.Home Field: Great American Ball Park

Key Players: 1B Joey Votto; 2B Brandon Phillips; RF Jay Bruce; P Johnny Cueto; RP Jonathan Broxton

MVP Candidate: 1B Joey Votto

Cy Young Candidate: P Johnny Cueto

ROY Candidate: OF Billy Hamilton

Key Additions: CF Shin-Soo Choo; 3B/1B Jack Hannahan; IF Jason Donald

Possible lineup: Choo CF; Phillips 2B; Votto 1B; Bruce RF; Ludwick LF; Frazier 3B; Hannigan C; Cozart SS

Possible rotation: Cueto; Latos; Arroyo; Bailey; Chapman

St. Louis Cardinals2. St. Louis – Manager: Mike Matheny (2nd year)

The Cardinals got back to the post season in 2012 as a wildcard and then dispatched Atlanta and Washington before losing to San Francisco in the NLCS.  It was probably more than they could have asked for after getting a new manager and losing 1B Albert Pujols in free agency.  This year the Cards will have a chance to get back to the post season again but are a bit weak in the middle infield as Rafael Furcal is aging and Daniel Descalso plays better as a utility infield not a starter, Pete Kozma could see sometime at short. OF Carlos Beltran who replaced Pujols is older and has knee issues that could hurt his production.  But the pitching staff throws strikes and the entire staff has a good BB:K ratio.

Pitcher Adam Wainwright #50 of the St. Louis Cardinals reacts after the end of the sixth inning against the San Francisco Giants in Game Four of the National League Championship Series at Busch Stadium on October 18, 2012 in St Louis, Missouri.Home Field: Busch Stadium

Key Players: RF Carlos Beltran; LF Matt Holliday; 3B David Freese; P Adam Wainwright; P Chris Carpenter

MVP Candidate: LF Matt Holliday

Cy Young Candidate: P Adam Wainright

ROY Candidate: OF Oscar Tavares; P Joe Kelly

Key Additions: 2B/SS Ronny Cedeno; IF/OF Ty Wiggington; RP Randy Choate

Possible lineup: Furcal SS*; Jay CF; Holliday LF; Beltran RF; Molina C; Freese 3B; Craig 1B; Descalso 2B

*Furcal may miss start of season with injury.

Alternate lineup: Jay CF; Descalso 2B; Holliday LF; Beltran RF; Molina C; Freese 3B; Craig 1B; Kozma SS

Possible rotation: Wainwright; Lynn; Garcia*; Westbrook; Miller

*Garcia is questionable for start of season with shoulder injury. Joe Kelly could take the spot in the rotation.

Pittsburgh Pirates3. Pittsburgh – Manager: Clint Hurdle (3rd year/11th overall)

For the second season in a row Pittsburgh had a baseball resurgence and played good baseball for most of the season only to fade at the end. They had their 20th losing season in a row. I see more of the same this year for the Buco’s as they compete before falling out of contention for a playoff spot but the may climb as high as 3rd in the Central.  They have a good 1-2 veteran combo in the rotation and one of the stars of the game in Andrew McCutchen but they need more offense, to play better defensively and be stronger come August and September where they are 38-77 the last two seasons.

Andrew McCutchen #22 of the Pittsburgh Pirates makes a sliding catch against the St. Louis Cardinals during the game on August 29, 2012 at PNC Park in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.Home Field: PNC Park

Key Players: CF Andrew McCutchen; 1B Garrett Jones; C Russell Martin; P A.J. Burnett; RP Jason Grilli

MVP Candidate: CF Andrew McCutchen

Cy Young Candidate: P A.J. Burnett

ROY Candidate: P Gerrit Cole

Key Additions: C Russell Martin; RP Mark Melancon; RP Zach Thornton; P Francisco Liriano; P Vin Mazzaro

Possible lineup: Marte LF; Walker 2B; McCutcheon CF; Jones 1B; Alvarez 3B; Martin C; Snyder RF; Barmes SS

Possible rotation: Burnett; W. Rodriguez; McDonald; Karstens; Liriano

Milwaukee Brewers4. Milwaukee – Manager: Ron Roenicke (3rd year)

The Brewers are rebuilding and will most likely find themselves in a battle for 3rd in the Central with the up and coming Pirates. It will be hard for the Brew Crew as they will miss 1B Corey Hart for at least four months as well as his replacement Mat Gamel who tore his ACL and is out for the season.  Also starter Chris Narveson may not be ready to start the season after shoulder surgery. The pitching lacks depth behind Yovani Gallardo and John Axford and the less experienced pitchers will need to assume larger roles if they are to compete.

Ryan Braun #8 of the Milwaukee Brewers celebrates after a 6-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on September 18, 2012 at PNC Park in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Home Field: Miller Park

Key Players: LF Ryan Braun; 3B Aramis Ramirez; CF Carlos Gomez; P Yovani Gallardo

MVP Candidate: LF Ryan Braun

Cy Young Candidate: P Yovani Gallardo

ROY Candidate: P Wily Peralta; 1B Hunter Morris

Key Additions: RP Burke Badenhop; P Shaun Marcum; RP Mike Gonzalez; RP Tom Gorzelanny; 1B Hunter Morris

Possible lineup: Aoki RF; Weeks 2B; Braun LF; Ramirez 3B; Lucroy C; Gomez CF; Morris 1B; Segura SS

Possible rotation: Gallardo; Estrada; Fiers; Narveson*; Peralta

*Narveson had shoulder surgery in May 2012 and may miss start of season.  Mark Rogers and Josh Stinson are candidates for the rotation spot.

Chicago Cubs5. Chicago – Manager: Dale Sveum (2nd year)

Year Two of the “Theo Epstein Project” (that should be the name of his band) and now without Houston in the division any longer there is no one but themselves to keep the Cubs out of the basement.  Epstein along with GM Jed Hoyer are working feverishly to build the farm system as they both know that is what will help them down the road.  They hope that the road will eventually take them to the franchise’s first World Series title since 1908.  They’ve stopped handing out crazy money and bad free agent contracts.  While the farm system still lacks premium prospects they have a good MLB core of P Jeff Samardzija, 1B Anthony Rizzo, 2B Darwin Barney and SS Starlin Castro. The bullpen is shaky especially with Carlos Marmol as the closer, the rotation is inconsistent and they lack a true CF.

Shortstop Starlin Castro #13 of the Chicago Cubs throws to first on a ground ball out against the Arizona Diamondbacks during a MLB game at Chase Field on September 30, 2012 in Phoenix, Arizona. Home Field: Wrigley Field

Key Players: SS Starlin Castro; 1B Anthony Rizzo; 2B Darwin Barney; SP Jeff Samardzija; SP Matt Garza

MVP Candidate: SS Starlin Castro

Cy Young Candidate: P Matt Garza

ROY Candidate: RP Kyuji Fujikawa

Key Additions: SP Edwin Jackson; SP Scott Baker; C Dioner Navarro; OF Nate Schierholtz; SP Scott Feldman; RP Kyuji Fujikawa

Possible lineup: DeJesus CF; Scheirholz RF; Rizzo 1B; Soriano LF; Castro SS; Stewart 3B; Castillo C; Barney 2B

Possible rotation: Samardzija; Garza; Jackson; Feldman; Baker

Tomorrow: the AL Central.

Gigantic Sox and Dawgs 2013 MLB Preview – Day 2 – AL West

Welcome to the Gigantic Sox and Dawgs 2013 MLB preview.  Over the next few days you will get a team by team look at its key players, new faces, their potential MVP, Cy Young and Rookie of the Year candidates, their possible starting lineup and rotation as well as a quick summary.

2013 SOX & Dawgs AL West PreviewWe will also select a MVP candidate and Cy Young candidate for each team no matter what their predicted team outcome is.

Yesterday we looked at the NL West, today it’s the AL West.

American League West

The West division in the American League hasn’t seen the Angels contend in the last few seasons but 2013 seems to be a year where they can win the division and get deep into the post season.  Oakland should be able to build on a wonderful 2012, while this year is the year the Rangers continue to slide and do not make the playoffs.  Good news for Seattle is they won’t finish last this year that’s because Houston switches leagues and comes to AL West.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim1. Los Angeles – Manager Mike Scioscia (14th year)

The Angels once again jumped into the free agent market when owner Artie Moreno got itchy and decided he wanted to be involved.  Last year it was for 1B Albert Pujols, this time around Moreno went above his baseball executives and came back with OF Josh Hamilton. Los Angeles was looking for someone to compliment the middle of the order and now they have Hamilton who will certainly replace Torii Hunter, who signed with Detroit, in the field and at the plate.  The starting pitching is a bit iffy after Jared Weaver especially with C.J. Wilson coming off surgery on his elbow. The back of the rotation needs to be good Joe Blanton and Jason Vargas are only stop gap measures and Tommy Hanson is in his first AL season. Bullpen is a bit of concern with Ryan Madson returning post TJS but a solid 2-3-4-5 in the lineup, good defense and smart baseball will carry them.

Jered Weaver #36 of the Los Angeles Angels reacts after giving up a run in the fourth inning against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park on August 22, 2012 in Boston, Massachusetts. Home Field: Angel Stadium

Key Players: 1B Albert Pujols; OF Mike Trout, OF Josh Hamilton; P Jered Weaver; RP Ryan Madson

MVP Candidate: 1B Albert Pujols; RF Josh Hamilton; LF Mike Trout

Cy Young Candidate: P Jered Weaver

ROY Candidate: 2B/SS Andrew Romine

Key Additions: OF Josh Hamilton; P Tommy Hanson; RP Ryan Madson*; RP Jason Vargas; P Joe Blanton; INF Bill Hall

Possible lineup: Trout LF; Aybar SS; Pujols 1B; Hamilton RF; Trumbo DH; Kendrick 2B; Callaspo 3B; Ianetta C; Bourjos CF

Possible rotation: Weaver; Wilson; Hanson, Blanton, Vargas

*Closer Ryan Madson status is uncertain for the start of season and may start on DL.  In this case Ernesto Frieri would close games until his return.

Oakland Athletics2. Oakland – Manager Bob Melvin (3rd year/10th overall)

Last year it looked like Billy Beane was trading away the entire team and all he did was rebuild them into the AL West Champions for 2012.  The starting pitching is young and solid as is the bullpen of no-names.  The questions are can Yoenis Cespedes continue to improve in 2013 and can he get the protection he needs in the lineup from Josh Reddick and Brandon Moss who need to duplicate 2012 for this team to get back to the playoffs.

Yoenis Cespedes #52 of the Oakland Athletics hits a ground ball with the bases loaded scoring Cliff Pennington #2 of the Oakland Athletics (not pictured) in the bottom of the fourth inning giving the Oakland Athletics a 6-0 lead over the Boston Red Sox at O.co Coliseum on September 2, 2012 in Oakland, California. Home Field: O.com Coliseum

Key Players: RF Josh Reddick; LF Yoenis Cespedes; SS Hiroyuki Nakajima; P Jarrod Parker; P Brett Anderson

MVP Candidate: LF Yoenis Cespedes

Cy Young Candidate: P Brett Anderson

ROY Candidate: SS Hiroyuki Nakajima, P Dan Straily

Key Additions: SS Hiroyuki Nakajima; OF Chris Young; IF Andy Parrino; 3B Jefry Marte; C John Jaso; SS Jed Lowrie; RP Fernando Rodriguez; RP Hideki Okajima

Possible lineup: Crisp CF; Sizemore 2B; Cespedes LF; Moss 1B; Reddick RF; Donaldson 3B; Smith DH; Jaso C; Nakajima SS

Possible rotation*: Anderson; Parker; Milone; Griffin; Straily

* Expect one of the back end starters to lose his spot once Bartolo Colon returns from his 50-game PED suspension.

Texas Rangers3. Texas – Manager Ron Washington (7th year)

The Rangers made the playoffs for the third year in a row but barely and that streak should end this season.  After going to the World Series in 2010 and 2011 as AL West Champs they got into the tournament in 2012 as one of the two AL Wild Card teams and were promptly eliminated at home by Baltimore.  They have a good top third of a lineup but were weakened in the middle when Josh Hamilton left for Los Angeles. Yu Darvish needs to build on 2102 as the starting pitching is only average and the bullpen should be a raging concern other than closer Joe Nathan who is always solid.

Adrian Beltre #29 of the Texas Rangers field a ground ball and throws to first base for the out against the Oakland Athletics at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington on September 24, 2012 in Arlington, Texas. Home Field: Rangers Ballpark at Arlington

Key Players: 2B Ian Kinsler; 3B Adrian Beltre; DH/1B/OF Lance Berkman; P Yu Darvish; RP Joe Nathan

MVP Candidate: Adrian Beltre

Cy Young Candidate: P Yu Darvish

ROY Candidate: 1B/3B Mike Olt; CF Leonys Martin; SS Jurickson Profar

Key Additions: DH/1B/OF Lance Berkman; C A.J. Pierzynski; RP Josh Lindblom; P Jason Frasor; RP Joakim Soria; 1B/3B Mike Olt; SS Jurickson Profar; CF Leonys Martin

Possible lineup: Kinsler 2B; Andrus SS; Berkman DH; Beltre 3B; Cruz RF; Murphy LF; Pierszynski C; Moreland 1B; Martin CF

Possible rotation: Darvish; Holland; Harrison; Ogando; Perez

Seattle Mariners4. Seattle – Manager Eric Wedge (3rd year/10th overall)

The Mariners have to be grateful that the Houston Astros have moved from the NL Central to the AL West because it should give them another 10-12 wins and keep them out of the basement.  Mariners’ fans badly want some new ownership to give the franchise a boost much like Paul Allen did for the Seahawks. In order to generate more offense the team has also moved the fences in at Safeco Field. Until they show some of the big name free agents they are serious and want contend on a regular basis they will continue to languish at or near the bottom of the AL West.  Even with an elite starter in Felix Hernandez and closer Tom Wilhelmsen aren’t enough to save them right now. They are solid defensively but the worry is that they won’t score runs.  Don’t worry M’s fans help is on the way through your farm system you may have the best Top 5 prospects in the game.

Felix Hernandez #34 of the Seattle Mariners celebrates a win against the Minnesota Twins on August 27, 2012 at Target Field in Minneapolis, Minnesota.Home Field: Safeco Field

Key Players: CF Franklin Gutierrez; 1B Kendrys Morales; DH Jesus Montero; P Felix Hernandez; RP Tom Wilhelmsen

MVP Candidate: P Felix Hernandez

Cy Young Candidate: P Felix Hernandez

ROY Candidate: SP Erasmo Ramirez; C Mike Zunino; P Danny Hultzen

Key Additions: 1B Kendrys Morales; IN Robert Andino; OF/DH Jason Bay; LF Raul Ibanez; OF/1B Michael Morse; C Kelly Shoppach

Possible lineup: Ackley 2B;Gutierrez CF; Seager 3B; Morse LF; J. Montero DH; Morales 1B; C; Saunders RF; Shoppach C; Ryan SS

Possible rotation: Hernandez; Iwakuma; Beavan; Noesi; Ramirez

Houston Astros5. Houston – Manager Bo Porter (1st year)

The Astros changed uniforms and moved to AL West for 2013, there’s also a new manager and new league to lose a ton of games in this year as the ‘Stros will now be the whipping boys for the American League.  It’s not going to be pretty but then again it hasn’t been for the last 10 years in Houston.  The team has lost 213 games the last two seasons and you can look for another 100 losses this year.  The starting pitching has little MLB experience and they are very weak across the board in all phases, offense, defense, pitching and on the bench.

Jose Altuve #27 of the Houston Astros motions as he crosses home plate after hitting a home run in the fourth inning against the St. Louis Cardinals at Minute Maid Park on September 26, 2012 in Houston, Texas. Home Field: Minute Maid Park

Key Players: 2B Jose Altuve; LF J.D. Martinez; DH Carlos Pena; P Bud Norris; P Phil Humber

MVP Candidate: 2B Jose Altuve

Cy Young Candidate: P Bud Norris

ROY Candidate: 3B Matt Dominguez; 1B/OF Jonathan Singleton

Key Additions: Mgr Bo Porter; DH Carlos Pena; OF Che-Hsuan Lin; RP Josh Fields; P Phil Humber; P Erik Bedard; OF Rick Ankiel; 1B Chris Carter; P Brad Peacock

Possible lineup: Altuve 2B; Greene SS; Carter 1B; Pena DH; Maxwell CF; J.D. Martinez LF; Castro C; F. Martinez RF; Domiguez 3B

It was a lot of work but a lot of fun compiling this preview and starting today we will take a look at the National League West.  The rest of the schedule follows with a different division being profiled each day and the final day will bring you the winners, award selections and a list of managers who have a lot to prove in 2013 if they want to be on the bench in 2014.

Tomorrow you will get the American League West preview followed by the NL Central, AL Central, NL East and AL East.

National League West

The National League West will once again see the Giants take the division flag come years end but will also see the Dodgers contend for the division title.  It will be the Giants pitching that will overcome the Dodgers hitting.  The Diamondbacks should also be in the picture at least until August while the Padres and Rockies expect to be on the outside looking in.

San Francisco Giants1. San Francisco – Manager Bruce Bochy (7th year/19th overall)

When you win two World Series titles in a three year span you should be the favorite for your division and that’s where I have the Giants.  Buster Posey may be the game’s best player but once again after him there is not a lot of pop in the line up although it’s possibly better than last year.  It will be the defense and the outstanding pitching, both the starters and bullpen, that propels them.  What has set them aside the last few years is the late season moves always seem to work out for the best even though they may have overpaid to retain two of those late season acquisitions in CF Angel Pagan and 2B Marco Scutaro.

Buster Posey #28 of the San Francisco Giants looks on against the Detroit Tigers during Game Four of the Major League Baseball World Series at Comerica Park on October 28, 2012 in Detroit, Michigan. Home Field: AT&T Park

Key Players: C Buster Posey; RF Hunter Pence; SS Brandon Crawford; SP Matt Cain; RP Sergio Romo

MVP Candidate: C Buster Posey

Cy Young Candidate: P Matt Cain

ROY Candidate: 1B/3B Conor Gillaspie

Key Additions: OF Andres Torres; RP Sandy Rosario; RP Chad Gaudin

Possible lineup: Pagan CF; Scutaro 2B; Sandoval 3B; Posey C; Pence RF; Belt 1B; Crawford SS; Blanco LF

Possible rotation: Cain; Bumgarner; Lincecum; Volgelsong; Zito

Los Angeles Dodgers2. Los Angeles – Manager Don Mattingly (3rd year)

New owners, the Guggenheim Group, came in with deep pockets and showed they weren’t afraid to spend money and now they have baseball’s largest payroll at this time.  They have a good lineup but could use a better option at third other than Luis Cruz or Juan Uribe.  Even though they lack a true closer and could possibly use an additional situational lefty in the pen it is expected that they will seriously challenge the Giants for the division.

Matt Kemp #27 of the Los Angeles Dodgers cewlebrates as he crosses home after hitting a solo home run in the second inning against the Arizona Diamondbacks on September 2, 2012 at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, CaliforniaHome Field: Dodger Stadium

Key Players: 1B Adrian Gonzalez; SS Hanley Ramirez; CF Matt Kemp; P Clayton Kershaw; P Chad Billingsley

MVP Candidate: 1B Adrian Gonzalez; CF Matt Kemp

Cy Young Candidate: P Clayton Kershaw

ROY Candidate: P Hyun-Jin Ryu

Key Additions: 2B/OF Skip Schumaker; P Zack Greinke; P Hyun-Jin Ryu; RP J.P. Howell; RP Rob Rasmussen; C Tim Federowicz

Possible lineup: Crawford* LF; M. Ellis 2B; Gonzalez 1B; Ramirez SS; Kemp CF; Ethier RF; Cruz 3B; A.J. Ellis C;

*Crawford may not be ready to play until early May after Tommy John surgery.  If that’s the case flip his spot with Either and Hairston will LF.

Possible rotation: Kershaw; Greinke; Beckett; Ryu; Harang**

**Billingsley is up in the air for 2013 after an elbow injury and Harang would be a candidate for his spot.

Arizona Diamondbacks3. Arizona – Manager Kirk Gibson (4th year)

The Arizona Diamondbacks are looking for some consistency they had too many mental lapses in 2012 and it cost them.  After making the playoffs in 2011 they failed to get back to the post season even with the additional wild card team in each league.  They have a young talented starting rotation and they did some overhauling of the roster again which included dealing Justin Upton to Atlanta but I don’t see them beating out the Giants or Dodgers for the division but they could hang in there for a wild card berth.  Look for rookie Adam Eaton to be an impact player on offense and defense.

Ian Kennedy #31 of the Arizona Diamondbacks pitches against the San Francisco Giants at AT&T Park on May 30, 2012 in San Francisco, California. Home Field: Chase Field

Key Players: 3B Martin Prado; 1B Paul Goldschmidt; CF Adam Eaton; P Ian Kennedy; P J.J. Putz

MVP Candidate: 3B Martin Prado

Cy Young Candidate: P Ian Kennedy

ROY Candidate: CF Adam Eaton and P Tyler Skaggs

Key Additions: OF Cody Ross; 3B Eric Chavez; P Brandon McCarthy; SS Cliff Pennington; RP Heath Bell; 1B/OF Eric Hinske; 3B Martin Prado; P Randall Delgado; RP Matt Reynolds

Possible lineup: Eaton CF; Hill 2B; M. Montero C; Kubel LF; Goldschmidt 1B; Prado 3B; Ross RF; Pennington SS

Possible rotation: Kennedy; McCarthy; Cahill; Miley; Delgado

Colorado Rockies4. Colorado – Manager Walt Weiss (1st year)

The Rockies floundered in 2012 after a major overhaul of the major league roster and that cost some people their jobs including manager Jim Tracy who has been replaced by Walt Weiss who was coaching high school baseball and Colorado only gave him only a one-year contract.  They’re going to have to fight to stay out of the cellar in 2013, they should score some runs especially at Coors Field but it is the pitching that will doom them.  The starters have a history of injuries and giving up tons of runs, the bullpen was overworked in 2012 and that needs to change.

Carlos Gonzalez #5 of the Colorado Rockies hits a homerun against the San Diego Padres during an MLB game on July 20, 2012 in San Diego, California. Players of the Colorodo Rockies are wearing 7-20 eye black stickers in mourning over the Aurora, Colorado shootings. Home Field: Coors Field

Key Players: LF Carlos Gonzalez; SS Troy Tulowitzki; RF Michael Cuddyer; P Jorge De La Rosa; P Rafael Betancourt

MVP Candidate: LF Carlos Gonzalez

Cy Young Candidate: P Jorge De La Rosa

ROY Candidate: RP Daniel Rosenbaum

Key Additions: Mgr Walt Weiss; RP Daniel Rosenbaum; 3B Ryan Wheeler; OF Ken Williams; RP Wilton Lopez

Possible lineup: Fowler CF; Rutledge 2B; Gonzalez LF; Tulowitzki SS; Cuddyer RF; Helton 1B; Rosario C; Nelson 3B

Possible rotation: De La Rosa; Chacin; Pomerantz; Nicasio; Francis

San Diego Padres5. San Diego – Manager Bud Black (7th year)

The Padres should once again struggle to get to .500 this season and they’ll have trouble scoring runs even with the fences at Petco moved in.  Any success that San Diego has will most likely come if the pitching holds up but the staff as a whole lack depth due to injuries and resources.  They’re defense is poor except on the infield corners where they are anchored by Chase Headley and Yonder Alonso. They will miss C Yasmani Grandal who is suspended 50 games for PEDs and was expected to play a part this season.

Chase Headley #7 of the San Diego Padres watches the flight of his grand slam hit during the seventh inning of a baseball game against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Petco Park on September 9, 2012 in San Diego, California. Home Field: Petco Park

Key Players: 3B Chase Headley; 1B Yonder Alonso; LF Carlos Quentin; P Edinson Volquez; RP Huston Street

MVP Candidate: RF Carlos Quentin

Cy Young Candidate: P Edinson Volquez

ROY Candidate: P Casey Kelly

Key Additions: P Jason Marquis; P Tyson Ross; RP Wilfredo Boscan; IF Cody Ransom; P Freddy Garcia

Possible lineup: Cabrera SS; Forsythe 2B; Headley 3B; Quentin LF; Alonso 1B; Denorfia RF; Maybin CF; Hudley C

Possible rotation: Volquez; Richard; Marquis; Stults; T. Ross

SOX & Dawgs 2011 MLB Preview – Day 7 – 2011 Postseason Picks

I hope you enjoyed the Gigantic SOX & Dawgs 2011 MLB preview.  Over the last week we gave you a team by team look at the key players, new faces, potential MVP, Cy Young and Rookie of the Year candidates, possible starting lineups and rotations as well as a quick summary.

This preview was sculpted over a nearly seven week period in the off season with some mild tweaking as we went along prior to publication.  It comes from a culmination of reading so many baseball magazines, periodicals, articles and websites that in some cases I may know a team better that its own management.

After previewing all six divisions, today is the day we look at the big winners and managers who could be in trouble in 2011.  You can check out all the division previews by following the links.

2011 Post Season picks, Award winners and Managers on the Hot Seat

In the final day of the Gigantic Sox and Dawgs 2011 MLB Preview I, with a little help from Ian, will reveal all my playoff picks, the World Series winner and the major Award winners for 2011 but first let’s take a quick look at what managers are in dire straits as we begin the new season.

In the National League, former Red Sox bench coach Brad Mills is entering the second year of his contract with Houston.  Lately Drayton McClain has been going through a manager every two seasons or so. Cecil Cooper got just under 2 seasons; Phil Garner a little over two and he took them to their first World Series and before him Jimy Williams lasted just over two seasons.  Hopefully McClain realizes a revolving door isn’t a good thing and Millsy gets to hang on for a while.  In Washington, Jim Riggleman is starting his 3rd season (2nd full) there and another 30 games below .500 finish or potential finish will mean the end of his job.  And in St.Louis look for the possibility that long time Cardinals manager Tony LaRussa pulls the plug after the season.  LaRussa is on yet another one year contract and he may feel that 16 years in one spot is enough.

In the American League I always feel as if Ozzie Guillen is on the hot seat.  Generally not for the way his teams play, he’s only had 2 sub .500 seasons and won a World Series in 2005, but because of his mouth and his antics.  At some point GM Ken Williams is going to feel enough is enough and Guillen will get the gate.  The question is will 2011 be the year? In Detroit Jim Leyland is in his 6th year leading the Tigers and you have to wonder if he may start feeling the fatigue he had felt in the late 90’s and he himself steps away at years end.  The only other manager I wonder about as the season starts is Oakland’s Bob Geren.  The A’s had a .500 season last year after 3 sub .500 years and they look to be much improved in ’11.  If the team doesn’t get off to a good start and is seemingly falling short of expectations he could get the gate.

Now here are the Sox & Dawgs picks for the 2011 playoffs and the major award winners:
