Van Every Activated By Red Sox

(Photo by Elsa/Getty Images)With Chris Carter getting sent down to Pawtucket yesterday, the Boston Red Sox announced today that they have activated Jonathan Van Every from the 15-day disabled list.

Carter was sent down because Jeff Bailey was called up for Rocco Baldelli and they both can play first base and the outfield. With the Red Sox not needing two backup first baseman, they’d rather let Carter get some development time.

Van Every started the season on the disabled list after badly spraining his ankle. He will provide outfield depth and a lefty bat off the bench until Mark Kotsay returns from the disabled list.

UConn Women Heading To Washington

President Barack ObamaTina Charles said after the UConn Huskies women’s basketball team won the 2009 NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship that she wanted to meet President Barack Obama.

Well now she’ll get that opportunity as she and her teammates have been invited to the White House on Monday afternoon at 2 PM to meet with President Obama.

“The President congratulated Coach Auriemma on his team’s undefeated year and was impressed to learn that UConn had only one senior who started in the title game. Coach Auriemma put center Tina Charles on the phone, and the President congratulated her on a great game and for going 11 for 13 from the floor, but jokingly asked what happened with the other two shots. The President told Coach Auriemma that he’s looking forward to seeing him and the rest of the Huskies at the White House.”

UConn LB Scott Lutrus Arrested

Scott Lutrus - CLOE POISSON/HARTFORD COURANT

Let’s just hope that this was one big misunderstanding:

According to the police arrest log, officers were dispatched to a report of a fight near the entrance to Celeron Square Apartments. Upon arrival, officers attempted to detain Lutrus. Boston Red Sox News & Notes – 4/24

The Boston Red Sox had the day off yesterday as they prepare to face their friends hated rivals to the south, the New York Yankees. Both teams enter the series with the same record (9-6).

The rivalry hasn’t been the same over the years but there has been one thing that’s been pretty heated. That is the “feud” between Kevin Youkilis and Joba Chamberlain. No one seems to know why Joba dislikes Youk (how could you hate Youk, his beard has it’s own website) but one thing’s for certain, Joba’s been warned their will be consequences if he does.

“None of that, man,” David Ortiz told reporters. “Just play the game the way it’s supposed to be, and that’s about it. This is a guy, as good as he is, the next step for him will be to earn respect from everybody in the league. He’s not a bad guy, but when things like that happen, people get the wrong idea.”

Definitely going to be something to watch for in the 1st or 2nd inning tonight plus for the rest of the time that Joba is in there (hopefully an inning or two).

After playing two close games with the Chicago Bulls, the Boston Celtics finally brought their “A” game.

Paul Pierce scored 24 points in 27 minutes to help the Celtics to a big first half that helped them to an easy 107-86 win over the Bulls at the United Center in Chicago. The win for Celtics gives them a 2-1 advantage in their best-of-7 series.

Rajon Rondo showed no ill effects from the ankle injury as he had 20 points, 11 rebounds, 6 assists and 5 steals. Game 2 hero Ray Allen had 18 points while Glen “Big Baby” Davis had a monster game as well with 14 points, 9 rebounds, 6 assists, 6 steals and 3 blocks. Stephon Marbury came off the bench to add 13 points and 5 assists.

The Bulls were led by Ben Gordon who had 15 points and John Salmons and Kirk Hinrich who had 14 points each. NBA Rookie of the Year Derrick Rose was held to 9 points.

Rondo was carried off the court at the end of the game by Bill Walker but is fine. Rondo said after the game that his feet were hurting so he got a lift off the court.

The two teams are back in action on Sunday in Game 4 at the United Center at 1 PM.

Red Sox Re-Acquire Gabbard, Option Carter to Pawtucket

Texas Rangers pitcher Kason Gabbard walks away after he was tackled by Seattle Mariners' Richie Sexson in the fourth inning of an MLB baseball game in Seattle on Thursday, May 8, 2008. (AP Photo/Kevin P. Casey)One day after the Texas Rangers gave his away his jersey, Kason Gabbard was traded back to the Boston Red Sox today for cash considerations.

Gabbard was pitching in Triple-A for Oklahoma and will provide pitching depth for the Pawtucket Red Sox. He missed most of the 2008 season with an elbow injury and has been converted to a reliever.

You may remember that Gabbard was once a member of the Red Sox back in 2006 and 2007. He was traded to the Rangers along with David Murphy and Engel Beltre for Eric Gagne. And we all know how that trade worked out for the Red Sox.

And in the news we learned late last night, the Red Sox have officially optioned Chris Carter to Pawtucket today. They haven’t made a corresponding roster move yet and will make that tomorrow.

UConn’s Ater Majok To Enter NBA Draft

Ater MajokEven though he hasn’t played a game at UConn, freshman Ater Majok has decided to put his name in for the upcoming 2009 NBA Draft.

He does not plan to hire an agent and will most likely pull his name out by the June 15th deadline.

“After meeting with my family, I have decided that it is in my best interest,” Majok said in a statement. “I feel it will help me to test the process and get feedback on my strengths and weaknesses. It will allow me to get a better idea of what areas in my game need improvement and make me a better player in the future. I will not be hiring an agent and I enter this process with the full intention of assessing my abilities and returning to Connecticut in 2009-10.”

It will be interesting to see what happens with this. As he said, he expects to be back in an UConn uniform. He’s doing this because of some upcoming rule changes regarding underclassman next season.

I would think right now he may be a late second round pick because no one in the NBA has really had a chance to see what he can do.

On a side note, I really need to start bringing my computer with me when I head down to the shoreline of CT. I missed a lot of news today.
