Carter was sent down because Jeff Bailey was called up for Rocco Baldelli and they both can play first base and the outfield. With the Red Sox not needing two backup first baseman, they’d rather let Carter get some development time.

Van Every started the season on the disabled list after badly spraining his ankle. He will provide outfield depth and a lefty bat off the bench until Mark Kotsay returns from the disabled list.
