Gonzaga Basketball Players Arrest Update

Here is an update to the situation involving the arrests of Gonzaga basketball players, Josh Heytvelt and Theo Davis.

The players were pulled over by police because the tail lights on the Blazer were not on. Upon approaching the vehicle, the officers smelt marijuana coming from the car and also saw a bag of ‘shrooms hanging out of Heytvelt’s bag. The bag had Heytvelt’s name and number on it. (Note to athlete’s: if you are gonna carry illegal drugs on you, don’t put them in a bag with your name and number it. At least steal one of your teammates so you can blame them and say you grabbed the wrong bag.)

Also in the bag were some brownie muffins which contained mushrooms in them. Ummm, I’ve heard of hash brownies but mushroom brownies. That’s a new one to me.

Davis had been doing bong hits earlier that night at a party and was a joint was found in his possession when he was searched in a pat down by police.

While they haven’t been formally charged with anything, they were arrested for investigation of a controlled substance. What is interesting to me is that Smith is not from the United States. I have to wonder if he is convicted of a crime, would he be deported back to Canada, where he makes his home.

So what is the lesson learned by these two athletes. Don’t do drugs. Even when you think you may not get caught, you will. In this case they did. They are now paying for it. Yes, they are young and almost everyone in college experiments, but there is a time and a place for that. As a college athlete, you are a role model and you have to remember that you are representing the university for which you play. If this was someone who worked for a major company or any company for that matter, odds are, if convicted, they would probably lose their employment.

My opinion is this. If they are convicted, they should lose their scholarships and be expelled from school. How many student-athletes get caught doing something wrong and they only get suspended for a few games. These two need to be made examples of.

Say no to drugs!!!

Are You Anna Nicole’s Baby’s Daddy?

On this crappy afternoon here in Connecticut, I digress away from sports for this post and ponder a serious question that’s happening in the world of celebrity deaths.

Are you Anna Nicole Smith’s baby’s daddy? Chances are if you are a male, you could be the father. So yes there is a small chance that I could be the baby’s daddy. Ok, that is definitely not a true statement.

The reason I bring it up is because when Smith became pregnant, two people were rumored to be the father, Howard K. Stern (no relation to Howard Stern), and Larry Birkhead, a photographer who slept with Smith. After Smith died last week from unknown causes still, Zsa Zsa Gabor’s husband, Prince Frederic von Anhalt said he was having a ten year affair with Smith and that he could be possibly the baby’s daddy. And now just recently, another guy who said he was boinking Smith and might be the baby’s daddy. Alexander Denk, a former bodyguard of Smith’s, claims he could possibly be the daddy as well. It is also rumored that Smith had some sperm from her 90 yr old husband, Howard Marshall, frozen and could have used that.

Which brings me back to original question? Are you Anna Nicole’s baby’s daddy? Chances are if you slept with her around 14-15 months ago, you could be the father.

The big stink about this whole mess is I am sure that none of them are really concerned about the baby but rather the money that Dannielynn Hope Marshall Smith will get from her mother’s estate. See this is important because whoever has the fatherhood rights, will control the sizable amount of money that Dannielynn will inherit. And thus, all these guys are really money hungry. (Ok that is my opinion but honestly if one more person claims to be the father, you will understand my point.)

The biggest concern should be the baby. The baby will now face a life without her mother. Shouldn’t these idiots be concerned with that rather than the money. Even Anna Nicole’s mom is more concerned about the money and she’s been estranged from Smith for the past 15 years.

It will be interesting to see how this all pans out. My prayers go out to Dannielynn.

Boston Red Sox News

Here is some Red Sox news for you on this icy and snowy Valentine’s Day morning here on the shoreline of Connecticut.

The official reporting date for pitchers and catchers is on Friday. So far we have seen Jon Lester, Jonathan Papelbon, Daisuke Matsuzaka and Josh Beckett are among the many players already in camp. Julio Lugo may even be in camp on Thursday.

While the pitchers and catchers are reporting to camp on Friday, Wily Mo Peña has a plane ticket booked to be in Phoenix that day. Why you ask? The Red Sox and Peña still have not reached a settlement on a contract yet and Friday is the day that his case will be heard by the arbitrator. Josh Zeide, Peña’s attorney had this to say:

“The ball’s in their court, if they want to make Wily Mo feel part of the team. The last thing we are looking for is any kind of adversarial relationship.”

The two sides are about $475,000 apart right now.

J.D. Drew is still not officially on the 40 man roster yet. Strangely enough, I had read somewhere that he was. Are the Red Sox thinking about making a trade and just waiting so they can fill the spot with Drew? Expect David Pauley, CT native and Yale alumni, Craig Breslow or Kason Gabbard to be removed from the 40 man roster if no one is traded shortly.

Here is a timeline of Matsuzaka’s moves during his workout yesterday.

  • 12:01 PM: Arrive in Escalade
  • 12:31 PM: Walk out onto the field and tour the grounds
  • 12:35 PM: Stretch
  • 12:40 PM: Jog
  • 12:46 PM: Put on his glove
  • 12:47 PM: Play catch with George Kottaras

Besides Japanese being spoken in camp now, the other new sound you will hear in Red Sox camp is the clicking of cameras chronicling Daisuke’s every move. Really, do we want to see him stretching?

All I have to say right now is that I wish I was in Florida at spring training right now instead of having to deal with this lovely weather. So if you have some extra $$$$ and a press pass laying around, send it my way. I will gladly go down to Ft. Myers and do some blogging from Red Sox camp.

Matsuzaka Arrives in Ft. Myers

I write this post thinking well I am sure most of you have already heard the news. Then I think to myself, well you can turn just about anywhere to get the updates. I swear 60% of the Boston Globe’s Red Sox page is about Dice-K. So the question I have to ask is, Is there anyone else on the Red Sox? Or is it Dice-K versus everyone this year.

All kidding aside, Daisuke arrived at spring training on Monday driving in in a Cadillac Escalade. Yes he was driving. I didn’t know you could get a driver’s license that quick. If the cops from Reno 911 were in Ft. Myers, he surely would have gotten a ticket. Matsuzaka did workout a little bit, playing a little catch with catching prospect, George Kottaras.

After the workout, Matsuzaka held an impromptu press conference much to the surprise of the Boston officials. He let the media know that his spring training locker was in the middle between Jason Varitek, and his fellow countryman, Hideki Okajima. Dice-K had this to say about the Captain:

I will try to communicate with Varitek as much as possible in order to have a good relationship. I want to play catch with him soon, but maybe Mr. Okajima will be my first partner.

Mr.? You can tell we are in a different climate now with him being respectful to Okajima. I’d expect a lot of this from Dice-K throughout the season.

Kottaras had to use a translator while playing catch with Matsuzaka. So I guess you can say they didn’t get to shoot the shit while playing catch.

Also if anyone wants to pony up some $$$$ and a press pass, I will gladly fly down to Ft. Myers and do some blogging from spring training.

UCONN Women Beat Up On the Louisville Cardinals

Renee Montgomery, one of four Huskies in double figures, led UCONN past the Louisville Cardinals 84-56 at Gampel Pavilion. Montgomery had 20 points while Mel Thomas and Charde Houston each had 19 points. Ketia Swainer came off the bench to score 12 points to round out the Huskies in double figures. Angel McCoughtry of Louisville led all scorers with 28 points. She also added 6 steals.

UCONN started the half out on a 19-2 run including 16-0 to start the game. Thomas had 2 three pointers during the run while Montgomery had 6 points. UCONN had 14 assists on 17 first half baskets. The second half was much of the same as UCONN used many small runs to provide the final margin of victory.

Notes and Observations:

  • The starters were Montgomery, Thomas, Greene, Charles and Houston.
  • Tina Charles was named the Big East freshman of the week for the fourth time in five weeks on Monday. She didn’t really have that great of a game tonight but it wasn’t really needed. She finished with 3 points and 9 rebounds. Her 3 points came from the free throw line.
  • Thomas moved into 7th place on the career 3 point list at UCONN. She finished the game with a career high tying 5 three pointers made. It was nice to see Mel a little more involved in the offense during the game. She hadn’t really been playing all that well lately. So this was a good way for her to bounce back.
  • Brittany Hunter was not dressed for the game. She has missed the past 3 games with her troublesome right knee. She is expected back next week.
  • Kaili McLaren only played six minutes. I’d have to think she might be in the doghouse of Geno Auriemma.
  • Houston played brilliantly during the game. Besides her 19 points, she had 8 rebounds and 8 steals.
  • Kalana Greene kept up her good play with 9 points and 9 rebounds.
  • UCONN has now been ranked for 260 consecutive weeks.
  • Where were all the people tonight? The lower bowl area behind the scorers table looked like it had tumbleweed blowing thru it. And the upper seating areas of Gampel looked like there might be cobwebs up there. Makes me wonder, did someone use CGI animation and put a crowd in.

I’ll be honest with you. I expected a lot more from Louisville. They are the 19th ranked team (22-3 record) in the country but they played more like one of the lesser quality teams in the Big East. A good win for the Huskies as they move towards their goal of winning the Big East regular season championship. They had won 11 in a row until two years ago. So needless to say, winning the Big East will give this junior class their first regular season championship.

With the win, UCONN moves to 23-2 (12-0 in the Big East). Next up for the Huskies is the Pittsburgh Panthers on Saturday afternoon at the Hartford Civic Center. Game time is 12 noon. Former Husky and current Panthers assistant, Shea Ralph, will receive her plaque commemorating her induction into the ‘Huskies of Honor’.

San Diego Chargers Fire Schottenheimer

If your team goes 14-2 in the regular season, you would think that your job is secure. Well this is not the case as the San Diego Chargers have fired their head coach, Marty Schottenheimer. Rumors are that Schottenheimer was not happy about losing his top assistants to other teams. The most recent one to leave was Wade Phillips, defensive coordinator, who took the head coaching job with the Dallas Cowboys. Cam Cameron, his offensive coordinator, left to take the head coaching job of the Miami Dolphins. His Tight ends coach Rob Chudzinski became the Cleveland Browns’ offensive coordinator, and linebackers coach Greg Manusky was hired by the San Francisco 49ers as their defensive coordinator. Schottenheimer recently turned down a 1 year extension for 2008, leaving him under contract for only the 2007 season. Thinking of Moving to Mexico (NY)

Are you thinking about moving to Mexico? Mexico, NY that is. If you are, I highly suggest that you think about that. In the past 8 days, they have received upwards of at least 10 feet of snow. Yes, 10 feet. To put that in perspective, most living rooms have 8 foot ceilings while office buildings have 10 foot ceilings. Sports wise, a regulation basketball hoop is 10 feet from the ground. See below. ↓

Hopefully that puts the height of the snow into perspective for you. You ask why I bring this up. Well here in New England, we are supposed be getting our first N’oreaster of the season. Down here on the shoreline of Connecticut, they are projecting 3 to 6 inches while in the middle of the state 5 to 10 inches, and up in the hill, upwards of a foot. Down here in West Haven, we have only had about 1 inch of measurable snow this year, which is a huge change from years past. Thanks to my Uncle Jock for the tip. Here are some pics from upstate NY after the jump.
