2011 NCAA Football Rankings – Week 5 (Sept. 25)

AP & USA Today Coaches Polls

The new polls are out this week and there’s a change at the top in one of them.

After a resounding win over the West Virginia Mountaineers on Saturday night, the LSU Tigers have jumped over the Oklahoma Sooners into the top spot in the AP Poll. Alabama and Boise State remain at No. 3 and No. 4 with Oklahoma State moving up two spots to No. 5.

In the USA Today Coaches Poll, the top five teams are the same. Just a little different order. Oklahoma remains No. 1 while Alabama is No. 2, LSU No. 3, Stanford No. 4 and Boise State is No. 5.

With the Mountaineers losing, the South Florida Bulls are now the highest ranked team from the Big East. They are No. 16 in the AP Poll and No. 14 in the Coaches Poll. West Virginia comes in at No. 22 and No. 23 respectively.

There are no teams from the Big East in the others receiving votes category.

2011 BlogPoll Top 25 Ballot – Week 4

As many of you know, I am one of the voters in the BlogPoll Top 25. Each week, bloggers across the country representing the various FBS schools get together and put together their own top 25’s. Here at SOX & Dawgs, we are representing the UConn Huskies. The votes are then tabulated on Mondays.

Each week we are asked to do an initial ballot. This allows you the reader to let us know in the comments whether you agree with my choices or not. The initial ballots will normally be done on Sunday.

After I check the comments for the initial ballot, I then resubmit my final ballot for the week. If there are comments, I’ll take them into consideration before submitting the final ballot by 8 a.m. on Monday.

You can check out the ballot I submitted earlier today by clicking on the read more button below if you’re on the homepage.

My big mover in the polls this week is Boise State. They probably should have been higher in earlier polls but they weren’t. With Florida State losing though, it was easy then to jump Boise State into the polls.

Judging from earlier polls, I never believed in Michigan State because I had them unranked. Therefore I added five teams to the poll after knocking out five of them.

Like what you see? Disagree, let me know in the comments before I submit my final poll before 8 am tomorrow morning.

2011 NCAA Football Rankings – Week 4 (Sept. 18)

AP & USA Today Polls

The college football polls are out for the week and after a strong performance against Florida State last night, the Oklahoma Sooners remain No. 1 in both polls.

In the AP Poll, the Soonners are followed by LSU, Alabama, Boise State and Stanford. In the Coaches’ Poll, they are followed by Alabama, LSU, Boise State and Stanford. So basically, same top five, different order as LSU jumped over Alabama in the AP Poll.

For the second straight week, there are two Big East teams in the top 25 of both polls.

The West Virginia Mountaineers are ranked No. 16 in both polls. The South Florida Bulls come in at No. 18 in the AP Poll and No. 17 in the coaches poll.

And again for the second straight week, there are no Big East teams in the others receiving votes category.

Bloguin Heisman Trophy Poll – Week 2

Bloguin Heisman TrophyEach week a group of Bloguin college football bloggers get together and put our votes in for the top Heisman Trophy candidates. Then after the votes are tabulated by Kevin over at College Football Zealots, the poll is released on Wednesday.

Here are the results for the first week of the 2011 college football season. Be sure to head over Crystal Ball Run for a full look at the results for the week for more insight on the poll.

  1. Andrew Luck (QB-Stanford) – 19 Points, 18.63%, 5 1st Place Votes
  2. Marcus Lattimore (RB-South Carolina)- 14 Points, 13.73%, 2 1st Place Votes
  3. Robert Griffin III (QB-Baylor) – 11 Points, 10.78%, 2 1st Place Votes
    Kellen Moore (QB-Boise St) – 11 Points, 10.78%, 2 1st Place Votes
  4. Russell Wilson (QB-Wisconsin) – 9 Points, 8.82%, 1 1st Place Vote
    Justin Blackmon (WR-Oklahoma State) – 9 Points, 8.82%, 0 1st Place Votes
  5. Landry Jones (QB-Oklahoma) – 7 Points, 6.86%, 1 1st Place Vote
  • Also Receiving Votes: Brandon Weedon (QB- Oklahoma State) 4 pts, Denard Robinson (QB- Michigan) 4 pts, Case Keenum (QB- Houston) 3 pts, T.Y. Hilton (WR- FIU) 3 pts, Tyler Bray (QB- Tennessee) 3 pts, Bernard Pierce (RB- Temple) 2 pts, Robert Woods (WR- USC) 1 pt, Brandon Herron (LB- Michigan) 1 pt, Geno Smith (QB- West Virginia) 1pt
  • Dropped Out: Dominique Whaley (RB- Oklahoma), Ryan Broyles (WR- Oklahoma), Tyrann Mathieu (CB- LSU), Danny O’Brien (QB- Maryland), Kendall Wright (WR- Baylor)

In case you were wondering, this is how I voted in this week’s poll:

  1. Andrew Luck – Stanford QB – Sure the lowly Duke Blue Devils picked him off but Luck was still quite impressive in throwing for 290 yards and two touchdowns. By the way, the pick came off of a deflection so you can’t put the entire onus on him.
  2. Kellen Moore – Boise State QB – The Broncos were off so he stays right where he was from last week. I do expect him to put up huge numbers this weekend against an inept Toledo team.
  3. Landry Jones – Oklahoma QB – The Sooners were off so no movement here either.

2011 NCAA Football Rankings – Week 3 (Sept. 11)

AP Poll & USA Today Coaches Poll

The new polls are out for the week and even with the week off, the Oklahoma Sooners remain No. 1.

The top five teams in both polls after the Sooners are the Alabama Crimson Tide, LSU Tigers, Boise State Broncos and Florida State Seminoles. The only difference in the top five from last week in the Coaches Poll is the fact the Boise State and Florida State flipped spots.

This week’s polls have the West Virginia Mountaineers and South Florida Bulls representing the Big East. The Mountaineers are No. 18 in the AP Poll and 20 in the Coaches Poll while the Bulls are No. 20 in the AP Poll and they jumped into the Coaches Poll at No. 22.

There are no Big East teams this week in the others receiving votes category in either poll.

If there are comments, I’ll take them into consideration before submitting the final ballot by 8 a.m. on Monday.

As you can see there are no changes to my top 11 teams. Made some slight adjustments in the middle with Oregon losing. Obviously with Mississippi State losing to Auburn and Missouri falling, they took the biggest tumbles in the poll and another loss in their next game would knock them out.

The hardest part for me this week was adding two teams to replace Georgia and Penn State. At 0-2, the Bulldogs are in trouble right now. I also thought Penn State would have put up a bigger fight against Alabama at home.

I went with South Florida, not because they are from the Big East, but rather they have played well in their first two games. They knocked Notre Dame out of my poll last week and looked great last night against Ball State. Baylor got in on the merit of beating TCU the first week.

Let me know if you agree or not, especially with the two teams I’ve added in this week. If not, I’ll be submitting this poll in for good in the morning.

Bloguin Heisman Trophy Poll – Week 1

Bloguin Heisman TrophyEach week a group of Bloguin college football bloggers get together and put our votes in for the top Heisman Trophy candidates. Then after the votes are tabulated by Kevin over at College Football Zealots, the poll is released on Wednesday.

Here are the results for the first week of the 2011 college football season. Be sure to head over College Football Zealots for a full look at the results for the week for more insight on the poll.

  1. Robert Griffin III (QB-Baylor) – 32 Points, 31.07%, 8 1st Place Votes
  2. Kellen Moore (QB-Boise St) – 18 Points, 17.48%, 3 1st Place Votes
  3. Andrew Luck (QB-Stanford) – 14 Points, 13.59%, 3 1st Place Votes
  4. Russell Wilson (QB-Wisconsin) – 9 Points, 8.74%, 1 1st Place Vote
    Landry Jones (QB-Oklahoma) – 9 Points, 8.74%, 1 1st Place Vote
  5. Robert Woods (WR-USC) – 7 Points, 6.80%, 0 1st Place Votes
  • Also Receiving Votes – Dominique Whaley (RB- Oklahoma) 3 pts, Brandon Weedon (QB- Oklahoma State) 3 pts, Ryan Broyles (WR- Oklahoma)- 1.5 pts, Tyrann Mathieu (CB- LSU) 1 pt, Marcus Lattimore (RB- South Carolina) 1 pt, Danny O’Brien (QB- Maryland) 1 pt, Case Keenum (QB- Houston) 1 pt, Brandon Herron (LB- Michigan) 1 pt, Kendall Wright (WR- Baylor) 1 pt, Justin Blackmon (WR- Oklahoma State) 0.5 pt.

In case you were wondering, this is how I voted in this week’s poll:

  1. Andrew Luck – Stanford QB – Luck starts the season on top in my poll. He could be playing every Sunday if he wanted to but he decided to come back. He didn’t disappoint in his first game a blowout win over San Jose. He finished the night with 171 passing yards and two touchdown passes. Even though it’s only week one, the Heisman is probably his to lose.
  2. Kellen Moore – Boise State QB – Back for another year is the slinging lefty from Boise State. He got off to a slow start against the Georgia Bulldogs but it didn’t take him long to turn it on. He helped his squad to the win by passing for 261 yards and three touchdowns. The only bad part of his night was an interception.
  3. Landry Jones – Oklahoma QB – I had Landry Jones on my radar after watching him in the Fiesta Bowl against my UConn Huskies. The junior quarterback had a great game against Tulsa throwing for 375 yards and one touchdown. He could easily be No. 2 here in my rankings but Moore got the edge because of his experience. I’m guessing he makes a race of it with Luck though as the season goes on.
