Dixon Heading To Steel City; Vaughn Heading To Frozen Tundra

UPDATE 4/25: Desmond Conner of the Hartford Courant has spoken with Andre Dixon and says that Dixon has not signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Andre Dixon (L), Robert Vaughn (R) - Hartford Courant photos

Two more members of the UConn Huskies football team have found homes in the NFL signing as undrafted rookie free agents.

While I’m sure he’s disappointed that he didn’t get drafted, UConn running back Andre Dixon will be heading to the Steel City as he has signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers. His teammate, safety Robert Vaughn, will be heading to frozen tundra of Lambeau Field as he has signed with the Green Bay Packers.

We’re still waiting to hear where defensive end Lindsey Witten and offensive tackle Mike Hicks will end up.

As a sophomore with the Huskies, Dixon teamed up with former Husky and current Colts running back Donald Brown in the backfield. Dixon finished the 2007 season with 167 carries for 828 yards and  three touchdowns. He also caught 24 passes for 280 yards and a touchdown.

The 2008 season was a lost cause for Dixon as he sprained his ankle during the preseason and that paved the way for Brown to be the starter in the backfield. And we all know how that turned out. Dixon was also suspended after being arrested for DUI but was reinstated in time for UConn’s bowl game against Buffalo.

Splitting time with Jordan Todman during the 2009 season, Dixon had 239 carries for 1,093 yards and 14 touchdowns. He also had 11 catches for 112 yards and a touchdown.

Vaughn played in 46 games with 40 starts during his four year career at UConn. He finished with 203 tackles, 14 interceptions, including a team-leading five in 2009 had one interception return for a touchdown.

Video: Roller Submits Njokuani at WEC 48

In the second event on the main card at WEC 48 at Arco Arena in Sacramento, CA, Shane Roller beat Anthony Njokuani by submission (rear naked choke) at 3:21 of the first round.

Desi Cullen Heading To Windy City

Huskies punter Desi Cullen gets a kiss from his father during Senior Night festivities at Rentschler Field on Saturday before UConn's game against South Florida (Stephen Dunn/Hartford Courant)

UConn Huskies punter Desi Cullen knew that he wasn’t going to get drafted during the 2010 NFL Draft. But what he did know is that he’d probably get a chance at some team’s rookie mini-camp.

And that time has come for Cullen as Desmond Conner of the Hartford Courant reports that Cullen is heading to the Chicago Bears, signing as a undrafted rookie free agent.

Cullen, one of four captains for the Huskies in 2009, will get a chance to compete for the jump during the rookie mini-camp later in the week. He’ll hope for a good enough showing that will allow him to compete with Bears punter Brad Maynard.

In three years as the Huskies punter, Cullen had 196 punts for 8,059 yards (40.7 avg per punt). He handled the kickoff duties for five games as a freshman and for his final three years at UConn.

In 2007, he punted 75 times for 3,055 yards with seven touchbacks and 21 punts downed inside the 20. In 2008, he had 59 punts for 2,351 yards (39.8 avg per punt) with five touchbacks and 24 punts downed inside the 20. In his senior season during 2009, Cullen had 62 punts for 2,653 yards (42.8 avg per punt) with nine touchbacks and 26 punts downed inside the 20.

Easley, McClain Only Huskies To Hear Named Called

A year after four UConn Huskies were drafted in the 2009 NFL Draft, just two went in the 2010 NFL Draft.

UConn in the NFL DraftIt didn’t take long for wide receiver Marcus Easley to come off the board as the Buffalo Bills took him with the 9th pick in the 4th round (107th overall). 142 picks later, cornerback Robert McClain heard his named called by the Carolina Panthers with the 42nd pick in the 7th round (249th overall).

It was thought that running back Andre Dixon and defensive end/linebacker Lindsey Witten would be drafted. Unfortunately for them, they weren’t but I’d expect them to sign contracts as undrafted rookie free agents.

According to Witten’s Twitter page, he does have some offers from teams.

Didn’t get drafted! But I’m on to the next! Gotta some offers now I moving forward! Congrats to my boys who did! #StillBlessed

Witten was projected to go in the 4th or 5th round while Dixon was projected as a 7th round pick or to sign as undrafted free agent.

As everyone knows by now, Texy over at Center Field is no longer doing gameday threads. Since I was a frequent visitor to there and know how much everyone enjoyed them, I decided to host them this year.

So for those who haven’t been here before, welcome. For those, who have, welcome back!! I hope you enjoy my new home here at Bloguin.

Quick Update For 4/24

Just to let ya’ll know, there won’t be a Boston Red Sox roundup this morning. I’m also not sure of when I’ll get back today but I’ll do my best to update things once I return home.

My apologies.
