Patriots Busy on Second Night of NFL Draft

It was another busy night for the New England Patriots on the second night of the draft. We saw them make a few trades again and oh yeah, they even made a few draft picks.

New England PatriotsThe Patriots first draft pick was supposed to be 12th pick in the 3rd round (44th overall) but a trade with the Oakland Raiders moved them up two spots to No. 42. With that picks, the Patriots selected tight end Rob Gronkowski out of Arizona.

In order to get Gronkowski, the Patriots gave up their 2nd round pick at No. 44 along with a 6th round pick (190th overall).

They were scheduled to make the 47th overall pick but once again they made another trade, sending the pick to the Arizona Cardinals. They got two picks back, a 2nd rounder (58th overall) and a 3rd rounder (89th overall).

When the Patriots went on the clock with the No. 53 pick, they didn’t make a trade. Instead they chose defensive end Jermaine Cunningham out of the University of Florida.

With the trade from the Cardinals giving them the No. 58 pick, when it came time to pick someone, they made yet another trade. This time they moved the No. 58 pick to the Houston Texans for the No. 62 pick (2nd round) and a 5th rounder (150th overall).

The Patriots used that No. 62 pick from the Texans to take linebacker Brandon Spikes from Florida.

When it came time for the Patriots to make their first selection in the third round, pick No. 89, they once again made a trade. This trade was with the Carolina Panthers. In return, the Pats got a second round pick in 2011.

They finally made a pick in the third round at No. 90, a pick acquired last night from the Dallas Cowboys, to take wide receiver Taylor Price out of Ohio University.

The Patriots will have eight picks on the final day of the draft (Rds 4-7).

Barring any trades, they’ll have one in the 4th round (No. 113), one in the 5th round (No. 150), one in the 6th round (No. 205) and five picks in the 7th round (Nos. 229, 231, 247, 248, 250).

After taking 2-of-3 from the Texas Rangers, the Boston Red Sox will host the Baltimore Orioles, a team they went 16-2 against in 2009, for a three-game set this weekend at Fenway Park.

First pitch for tonight’s game will be at 7:10 p.m. and will be shown on NESN Plus in the Red Sox television market. To find your NESN Plus channel, click here. The game will be broadcast on MASN in the Orioles television market. If you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to the game on the 2010 Red Sox radio network.

Jon Lester looks to bounce back from his rough start against a team he’s owned in the Orioles. In his three previous starts this season, Lester is 0-2 with a 8.44 ERA. He was 4-0 with a 1.65 in four starts against the Orioles in 2009. In his career against the O’s, Lester is 10-0 with a 2.39 ERA in 12 starts.

Jeremy Guthrie will try and get the Orioles into the win column for just the third time this season. He’s made three starts this season and is 0-2 with a 3.15 ERA. He’s made 11 career starts against the Red Sox and is 1-5 with a 4.75 ERA. In five career starts at the Fens, Guthrie is 0-2 with a 5.46 ERA. The Red Sox have beaten him the last five times they’ve faced him.

Patriots Take McCourty; Have 4 Picks Tonight

Devin McCourty - AP PhotoAfter making two trades in the first round of the 2010 NFL Draft on Thursday night, the New England Patriots finally made a choice and took cornerback Devin McCourty out of Rutgers.

The Patriots orginally had the 22nd pick but traded it to Denver for the 24th pick in the first round and a 4th round pick (113th overall). When it came time to pick at No. 24, the Patriots traded that pick and a 4th round pick (119th overall) to the Dallas Cowboys for the 27th pick in the first round and a 3rd round pick (90th overall).

The Broncos used the original Patriots pick to draft wide receiver Demaryius Thomas out of Georgia Tech while the Cowboys used the 24th pick to take wide receiver Dez Bryant out of Oklahoma State.

The Patriots will have four picks on the second night of the draft that begins at 6:00 p.m.

They’ll have the 11th pick in the 2nd round (44th overall), the 14th pick (47th overall) and the 21st pick (53rd overall). They’ll also have the 26th pick in the 3rd round (90th overall).

Boston Red Sox News & Notes – 4/23

Boston Red Sox starter Clay Buchholz catches the ball from an infield after Texas Rangers' David Murphy drove in the second run of the seventh inning of a baseball game at Fenway Park in Boston, Thursday, April 22, 2010. Buchholz allowed three earned runs and committed a throwing error during the inning. (AP Photo/Charles Krupa)

My sincere apologies for being late with this today but it’s been a crazy morning and sometimes real life gets in the way.

Clay Buchholz pitched a gem for the Boston Red Sox last night but it wasn’t enough as Texas Rangers starter C.J. Wilson was equal to the task in the Rangers 3-0 win. Despite the loss last night, the Red Sox took the series 2-1 and have the lowly Baltimore Orioles coming into town for a 3-game set this weekend.

Buchholz was probably pitching for his spot in the rotation last night and it showed. He was sharp throughout the first six innings but as he got into the 7th inning, he began to tire and that’s when the problems began for the Red Sox. The Rangers were able to take advantage of that and with a couple of errors by the Red Sox, including one by Buchholz himself, the Rangers plated three runs in the 7th.

It was learned by Sean McAdam of CSN New England that Buchholz won’t lose his rotation spot and Tim Wakefield will be heading to the bullpen after his start on Sunday to make room for Daisuke Matsuzaka in the rotation. What’s not known yet is when Dice-K will make his first start and who he’ll replace on the roster. If I were a betting man, I’d put my money on the two Scott’s, Atchison and Schoeneweis.

I’m sort of surprised by this given the fact Clay still has one more minor league option left. The Red Sox braintrust must have felt that Clay going back to Triple-A probably wouldn’t help his development. I do wonder though if the move has anything to do with the nine stolen base attempts off of the combination of Wake and Victor Martinez the other night.

Wilson did a great job of keeping the Red Sox hitters at bay last night mixing his pitches nicely. The Red Sox could never really get anything going against him.

It was nice though to see the Red Sox wake up against the Rangers at least even though they sit at 6-10. With the Orioles in town and them not playing good ball right now, let’s hope the Red Sox can get a sweep of them and move closer to .500.

Q & A With Baltimore Sports Report

Boston Red SoxBaltimore OriolesWith the Baltimore Orioles coming into Fenway Park for a 3-game weekend set with the Boston Red Sox, I was asked by the folks over at the Baltimore Sports Report to answer some questions about the Red Sox. You can see my answers here.

They were kind enough to answer some questions as well and you can see those answers below.

1. What’s the feeling around Baltimore with the Orioles off to a bad start? Or is it something that you just expect out of them since they’ve struggled the past few years?

I think we knew this kind of start was possible, but we chose not to believe it. This was the year where the O’s started to turn the corner. This was the year that they were supposed to be a .500 team. And then Spring Training happened and Brian Roberts didn’t feel well. And Chris Tillman wasn’t performing. And the numbers weren’t good for many of the players. But it was spring training, and we ignored it. Then Opening Day happened and the closer blew it and then it just gradually collapsed. Roberts went on the DL. Pie went down. Gonzalez went down. Bergesen couldn’t pitch strikes. Tejada hurt himself. And so on and so on.

So, the feeling around Baltimore is frustration. Of course there are a few people that are saying “I told you so.” I think they are few and far between.

2. What are your feelings on Peter Angelos as the owner of the Orioles? Has he done anything right lately?

I think Mr. Angelos has made his mistakes. There was a point in time where he meddled too much. He has made his mistakes and has learned from them. And he has done something right, he hired Andy McPhail to run this team and he has let go. Now it remains to see if it will be a success, but at least there seems to be a tangible plan in place.

3. What are your feelings on when Red Sox Nation takes over Camden Yards when the Red Sox come to visit? It at least has to be good for the local economy?

Oh we hate it. Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure Mr. Angelos doesn’t mind it. But as a fan, I refuse to spend my money and feel unwelcome in my own house. As for the local economy, I doubt it makes that much difference. The Red Sox Nation has seen an increase its members over the past 8 years due to the success of the team. We have found that a good bit of the population donning the Red Sox gear are just band wagon fans who reside in Washington, Dc, Northern VA, and all around the surrounding area.

I may sound bitter, but I only have the O’s to blame for letting this happen. They have sucked for so long, that their fans don’t want to spend their money anymore. If the O’s were winning, then season tickets would be up and O’s fans would be buying up the rest of the seats.

4. Any bright spots for the Orioles this year? And who do the O’s have in the minor leagues who could help the team out in the near future?

Everybody has been impressed with the poise of Brian Matusz. This kid is good and we can hope that he can only improve for years to come. I have also been happy with Matt Wieters. His decent numbers shine amongst the abysmal stats for the rest of the offense.

The O’s do have some strong pitching in minors. Hopefully, Chris Tillman can regain his form and come back to be a force. The O’s also have a hard throwing starter in Jake Arietta who may be the next minor leaguer to make the big league club. Jake has had a strong start in AAA season, and I would be shocked if he didn’t make the team by the mid-May.

The 2 position players that everyone is watching include Josh Bell and Brandon Snyder. Both have had slow sarts this season, so it seems unlikely that they can provide any help this season.

5. Obviously we know that Mike Gonzalez is on the DL but how has Kevin Millwood helped the ball club?

Millwood has been solid. Yesterday (Wednesday) he pitched a complete game. He lost after giving up 4 runs, but he has had very little run support. Between Matusz and Millwood, the relievers are getting 2 days of breaks each time through the rotation.
