Bad Editing on UCONNHuskies.com

Well what a strange night this has been. I swear I am not looking for imperfections on websites. Because I am sure someone could find something wrong on mine. Like when I wrote a synapse of the Knicks-Nuggets fight and called Nate Robinson, Nate Richardson. Or when I wrote the Huskies will honor the former players before the game when it was really after the game. I have no excuse for that.

Anyways read this and then tell me what’s wrong with the picture below it. I was sure to make sure both items had the correct date.

STORRS, Conn. (December 21, 2006) – All five starters scored in double figures as the No. 6/6 University of Connecticut women’s basketball team powered past Colorado State 93-58 on Thursday night at Harry A. Gampel Pavilion in Storrs, Conn.

UPDATE: They have now corrected the problem.

UCONN Women Batter the Rams

On Thursday night, the UCONN Lady Huskies beat the Colorado State Rams by the final score of 93-58. There was five Lady Huskies in double figures during the game. Renee Montgomery and Mel Thomas led the way with 19 pts each, Kalana Greene had 17 pts, Tina Charles with 17 pts and Charde Houston added 10 pts.

Colorado State had a fun time getting to Storrs for the game. They were the last flight out of Denver before the blizzard struck there. Of course their flight was delayed causing them to miss their connection at Dulles in Washington, DC. The team then split into two groups with half of them flying into Hartford and the other half into Providence, RI. Those who went to Providence then had to rent cars to get to their final destination. Their day started off at 3:30 am and ended on Wednesday night at 11:30 PM.

Notes and Observations:

  • The starters were Montgomery, Thomas, Greene, Charles and Houston.
  • Four of the five in double figures did it in the first half. Charde Houston got into double figures early in the second half.
  • I didn’t see Kristin Phillips at all. It makes you wonder what is going on with her since she didn’t make the two road trips before final exams.
  • Kalana Greene and Tina Charles led the team in rebounds with 8. Mel Thomas added a season high 7 rebounds.
  • Mel Thomas shot just under 50% from 3 pt land. She was 5 for 11.
  • Free throw shooting for the Huskies was ok tonight. They shot 21 of 32 (66%) from the line. I still think this needs to improve before the Big East schedule starts back up again.
  • Geno Auriemma now needs 3 wins to reach 600 in his Hall of Fame career. If the Huskies win their next two games, they should get Coach Geno his 600th win against Sacred Heart on December 31st at the Hartford Civic Center.
  • After the game, 10 former UCONN Lady Huskies were honored along with Coach Geno Auriemma into the ‘Huskies of Honor’. They are Kerry Bascom, Rebecca Lobo, Jennifer Rizzotti, Kara Wolters, Nykesha Sales, Sue Bird, Svetlana Abrosimova, Diana Taurasi, Swin Cash and Shea Ralph. Ralph and Abrosimova were not present for the ceremony due to previous commitments. They will be honored at a later time.
  • Speaking of crazy trips, Diana Taurasi and Sue Bird had a long trip. Eighteen Ten hours in all. They played a game in Moscow last night where they are playing for Spartak Moscow. They then boarded a flight to Storrs where they arrived just after the second half started.
  • The best line heard during the ceremony. When Diana Taurasi was speaking to the crowd she had mentioned that Coach Auriemma had lost some weight. So when Geno was speaking he made mention that yes he had lost some weight and then told Diana to look behind her because thats where it went. Just Geno being Geno with Diana and always having that last word.

With the win, the Lady Huskies move to 8-0 on the season. The next victim for the Huskies is Oakland (MI) University at 12:00 noon at the Hartford Civic Center on Saturday.

J.D. Drew Update from Scott Boras

According to Scott Boras, there is nothing physically wrong with J.D. Drew’s surgically repaired right shoulder.

“J.D. is healthy. We’ve had noted experts that have demonstrated that he’s without any condition that would effect him over the five years of the contract.”

I doubt the Red Sox will take Boras’ word for it given the fact he is a SPORTS AGENT (who aren’t exactly the most honest people you’ll meet). Hopefully, the second opinion the Red Sox had Drew go for confirms what Boras says and him and the Red Sox will get this deal done in time for Christmas.

UCONN Surfs Over The Waves

In a game that was closer then the final score indicates, the UCONN men defeated the Waves of Pepperdine by the final score of 88-66. Leading the way for the Huskies was AJ Price with 17 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals. Price did have trouble taking care of the ball during the game committing 7 turnovers. Doug Wiggins added 16 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists and just 1 turnover.

Two Huskies were perfect from the floor during the game. Hasheem Thabeet finished with 15 pts on 7 for 7 shooting. He made 1 of 2 from the foul line. Thabeet had 7 rebounds and amazingly didn’t block a shot during the game. Jeff Adrien was 6 for 6 from the field adding 14 pts. He was 2 of 3 from the foul line. Adrien had 7 rebounds and 2 blocks.

Stanley Robinson led the team in rebounds with 9 playing one of his better games of the season. He scored 8 pts. UCONN’s leading scorer, Jerome Dyson, was held to 9 points.

UCONN shot 51% from the floor in the game. They shot 68% (19 of 28) from the free throw line. Next up for the Huskies is Coppin State on Dec 27th at 7:00 PM at the Hartford Civic Center. That game will not be televised.

Notes: Earlier this week, Jerome Dyson was named the Big East Rookie of the Week for games played Dec 10th to Dec 16th.

Boston Red Sox News

I thought I’d pass on an update to the J.D. Drew situation, talk about Dice-K’s adjustments to the big leagues, and let you all know that the Red Sox bank account is officially less $51.1 million dollars.

First off, the Red Sox hopes are still up that they can finish the deal with J.D. Drew despite concerns with his surgically repaired right shoulder. Drew did go for his second opinion on his shoulder and word is the Red Sox are not as concerned as they once were. However, they would like to renegotiate the contract possibly adding into it something that will protect their investment should his shoulder cause him to miss significant time. They do hope that the deal can be worked out by the end of the week although with Scott Boras busy with Barry Zito right now, who knows. If he can stay healthy, Drew is a big part of the Red Sox for 2007. He will provide extra insurance batting behind Big Papi and Manny.

Here is something I didn’t know. Matsuzaka had been pitching in a six-man rotation over in Japan. Also their schedule is only 136 games compared to 162 in MLB. So instead of pitching on 5 days rest in Japan, he will be pitching on 4 days most of the time over in the States. This probably won’t end up being a big deal as he will have spring training to adjust to the pitching rotation.

And finally, the Seibu Lions announced that they have received the $51.1 million dollars posting fee from the Boston Red Sox.

Iverson Traded to the Nuggets

So how do you make up for the loss of Carmelo Anthony for the next 15 games? You go out and trade for Allen Iverson. As we all know Iverson has wanted out of Philadelphia for the past few weeks.

The deal is Allen Iverson and Ivan McFarlin going from the Philadelphia 76ers to the Denver Nuggets in exchange for Andre Miller, Joe Smith (he’s still around I guess), and two 2007 1st round NBA Draft picks.

We all know I am not the biggest NBA fan but to me that is an awful lot to give up. The first round picks are probably going to be in the low 20’s unless something drastic happens to Denver this season. Philadelphia could end up having the most balls in the lottery system as is.

It remains to be seen how Carmelo and AI interact on the court, as they are 1-2 in the league in scoring right now. They have been teams on the USA Basketball team but the NBA is a totally different animal. Time will tell as they won’t take the court together in Nuggets’ uniforms until Jan 20th when Melo is eligible to return from his 15 game suspension for his role in the fight on Saturday night.

I leave you with this question. Is former UCONN player Kevin Ollie now the star of the 76ers?
