UCONN Women White Out The Orange

On Saturday afternoon at Gampel Pavilion, Kalana Greene and Tina Charles led the Huskies past the Syracuse Orange by the final score of 76-45. Greene had 23 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 steals. Tina Charles had another double-double, 14 points and 19 rebounds. She also added 5 blocks to the cause. The 19 rebounds were a career high for Tina Charles. Charde Houston added 11 pts and Renee Montgomery rounded out the Huskies in double figures with 10 points and 9 assists.

Notes and Observations:

  • The starters were Montgomery, Thomas, Greene, Charles and Houston.
  • Kaili McLaren and Brittany Hunter did not play in the game. McLaren has been bothered by a foot injury and Hunter is still having issues with her right knee.
  • Tina Charles 19 rebounds were the most ever by a freshman in UCONN women’s basketball history.
  • After scoring 23 points the other night, Mel Thomas only scored 6 points. The Orange played a box-and-1 defense on her most of the game.
  • Renee Montgomery and Charde Houston had a rough night shooting the ball. They were a combined 9 of 26 from the floor.
  • Montgomery tied her career high with 9 assists.
  • Kalana Greene was everywhere on the floor during the game. She created a lot of shots for herself as she took 22 shots making half of them. She did attempt four 3 point shots but didn’t make them. If she starts to put them down, it will make other teams defenses think about guarding her differently.
  • Freshman Meghan Gardler continues to impress with her play. She seems to be working herself into the guard rotation a little more.

It was kind of a strange game for the Huskies. Early on they had trouble finding ways to score until they went on one of their patented runs to basically take control of the game midway thru the first half. The UCONN Huskies now improve to 13-1 (3-0 in the Big East). The Huskies now head to Chapel Hill, NC to take on the #2 UNC Lady Tarheels on Monday night. The game will be broadcast on ESPN2 at 7 PM.

NFL Playoff Predictions and More

Well last week I went 2 for 4 in my playoff predictions which for me is par for the course. The two teams I picked to win lost at the end of their respective games. The Giants lost on a last second field goal by David Akers and well we all know how Dallas lost at the end of their game.

So onward we go with the predictions for this week. Saturday’s games:

Indianapolis Colts vs Baltimore Ravens: Ravens D vs Colts O. If Baltimore finds a way to stop Peyton, it could be a long day for the Colts. Especially if they turn the ball over. With McNair at QB this season, the Ravens haven’t relied on their defense to win games. I’ll take the Ravens in the this one.

Philadelphia Eagles vs New Orleans Saints: The Iggles come into this game still being one of the hottest teams in the NFL. The Saints are led by their All-Pro QB Drew Brees and double threat Reggie Bush. The Eagles are missing Lito Sheppard in the secondary and I think that Brees will be pass happy. Saints win this one.

Sunday’s games:

Seattle Seahawks vs Chicago Bears: Will Sexy Rexy Grossman be ready to play in this one? He has been inconsistent at best this season. Seattle probably won’t have their top receiver, Darrell Jackson, and to me Sean Alexander hasn’t returned to last season’s form after his injury. Brian Urlacher leads the Chicago D and Devon Hester will probably return one punt or kickoff for a TD in this one.

New England Patriots vs San Diego Chargers: The Chargers have the NFL MVP, LaDainian Tomlinson. The Patriots have Tom Brady. The Chargers will have to find a way to stop Brady, who has only lost one time in his career in the playoffs. Shutting down LT will be huge for the Patriots and if they can do this, Shawne Merriman and the San Diego D will have to find a way to shut Brady down. I am going with the Patriots in this one. Just really hard to pick against Brady and Belichick in the playoffs.

If your heading to Gampel Pavilion to watch the Lady Huskies take on the Orangewomen of Syracuse on Saturday, make sure you wear white on the outside. UCONN has designated the game a “White-out”. I’d expect the Lady Huskies to top the 100 point mark again in this one. Mel Thomas will probably have another 20 point game and Tina Charles will have another double-double. The UCONN men will be at Madison Square Garden on Saturday night. The Huskies always seem to play well in the City and I expect this trend to continue. My problem though is if it is not a national game, why is the game being played at 9:30 at night. I am sure Coach Calhoun is not happy about this one at all. Good thing, the boys are on break right now.

Barry Bonds Update

Well here’s the latest scoop on the Barry Bonds saga. On Thursday, Barry decided to make a public apology to Mark Sweeney. Within that, he also made an apology to his teammates, the Giants organization and his family. This is what Mr Amphetamines had to say:

“He is both my teammate and my friend. He did not give me anything whatsoever and has nothing to do with this matter, contrary to recent reports. I want to express my deepest apologies especially to Mark and his family as well as my other teammates, the San Francisco Giants organization and the fans.”

Bonds did not publicly deny the fact that he failed the drug test nor did he confirm it. By the rules of the labor agreement between MLBPA and MLB, his test results do not have to be made public.

Barry is currently only 22 home runs away from breaking the all-time record of 755 home runs by Hank Aaron. Of course what we don’t know is, how many of his home runs were when he was “taking steroids”. I know that there is no public knowledge of him ever taking them, but if you look at his size when he was with the Pittsburgh Pirates to now with the San Francisco Giants, are you going to tell me that it was all from lifting weights and exercising? Even the guy’s head got bigger.

If this positive test result is true, this will put a big knot in his contract negotiations with the Giants, who are still working on the contract language of Barry’s 1 year $16 million dollar contract. They are trying to put in a provision that basically covers their asses if Bonds is indicted on perjury charges, has other legal issues, or just doesn’t follow team rules.

Barry, the time is now for you to come clean about everything. You are also a father. Do you want your kids to grow up with a father who is a liar, a cheat (not proven in a court of law)? This decision rests in that big head of yours.

Dunkin Donuts Ad

Sue, who also happens to be mother, came up with an interesting idea for a Dunkin Donuts ad in her comment on the Matsuzaka Endorsement Deals post. This is what she had to say:

Curt will find DiceK in the locker room trying to say Pahk the Cah, and Curt will try to teach him. Dice’s comments will have English subtitles, and Curt’s will be Japanese.

I very much like Sue’s idea. I liked it so much I actually forwarded it on to the marketing group who handles Dunkin Donuts advertising. Also, I have expanded her thoughts as well. My thinking would be basically what she has said but also have an ad where Daisuke is teaching Curt Schilling some Japanese. Some words that Dice-K could teach Curt:

  • yakyuu: which means baseball
  • konichiwa: which means hello, good morning, good afternoon, good evening
  • tensui: which means pitcher
  • kyaccha: which means catcher
  • tantoukachou: which means manager
  • ooinaru otokooya: loosely translated means Big Papi

It will be very interesting to see what the braintrust at Hill Holiday Marketing Group comes up with. After all, they are the ones that came up with “America Runs on Dunkin”. And for those of you who haven’t seen the Curt Schilling Dunkin Donuts ad or haven’t seen it in a long time, well, take a look below. Enjoy or shall I say enjoi.

LA Dodgers To Open “Takeru Kobayashi” Section

The Los Angeles Dodgers announced that they will be taking their right field pavilion and making it an all-you-can-eat section. For just the low price of $35 dollars in advance and $40 dollars on game day, you can try to see if you can eat as many hot dogs, peanuts, popcorn and nachos as you want. You can even wash them down with a soft drink. Beer, ice cream, and candy are not part of this package.

So if you want, maybe you can go down to Dodger stadium next season and try to do your best Kobayashi impression and eat as many hot dogs as you can. After all, it will only cost you $35 dollars.

Beckham Reportedly Coming To MLS

It is being reported that David Beckham will be taking his playing talents to Los Angeles to play for the Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League Soccer. Beckham, the former captain of the English National Team, had been playing in Spain for Real Madrid and was able to negotiate with any club. He had been trying to work on a contract extension with Real Madrid but he was unhappy that there wasn’t a starting position there for him.

Beckham’s wife Victoria, who was a former Spice Girl, has been spotted recently in Los Angeles looking for places to live. It is stated that she really wanted to be in Los Angeles to help further career and be closer to her celeb gal pals.

So how is the Los Angeles Galaxy able to circumvent the salary cap that MLS has? Well recently, MLS adopted the “Beckham Exemption” which allows teams to have a player whose salary is not governed by the cap rules. It was basically enacted for teams to pursue foreign stars such as Beckham.

For those of you who remember the late 70’s, Beckham could have the same drawing power as Pelé did when he came to the United States to play for the New York Cosmos of the NASL (North American Soccer League). With attendance lagging the past few years in MLS, Beckham’s presence on the Galaxy should help them and other teams boost attendance.

I think that this is great for the MLS and American soccer (futbol). With our recent struggles in World Cup play and soccer not being the number 1 sport here in America, this signing will definitely put a little more spotlight on soccer here. Will other players follow him over here. Well, us as fans can only hope that more stars follow the lead of the former English captain and come to the United States to play. Heck, we are in the middle of global warming right now, so we have some decent weather to offer.

1:00 PM UPDATE: Beckham’s deal is worth $250 million dollars over an undisclosed amount of time. The contract is for five years with the Los Angeles Galaxy. He will join the Galaxy after June 30th when his contract runs out with Real Madrid

Barry Bonds Flunked Drug Test

According to the New York Daily News, Barry Bonds tested positive for amphetamines during a drug test in the 2006 season and then had the balls to say he got it from a teammate. Barry had stated that he received the substance in question from Mark Sweeney, one of his teammates with the San Francisco Giants last season.

Mark Sweeney’s agent, Barry Axelrod, had this to say about his client’s involvement:

“Mark was made aware of the fact that his name had been brought up. But he did not give Barry Bonds anything, and there was nothing he could have given Barry Bonds.”

Gene Orza, COO of the Major League Baseball Players Association made Sweeney aware that Bonds had failed the drug test and then told Sweeney, he need to remove any illegal substances from his locker and not to give them to any of his teammates. Sweeney told Orza he had nothing illegal in his locker.

Major League Baseball instituted a new drug policy in the wake of the Congressional Hearings on steroid use in baseball last season. The first failed test for amphetamines meant the player would have to be tested six times during the season. Also, there names wouldn’t be made public unlike when a player failed a steroid test. If a player tests positive for amphetamines a second time, they would be subject to a 25 game suspension.

Well well Mr Bonds. The truth comes out. Here you are in the past saying that you had never tested positive for any illegal drug use and now this. It takes balls to blame your problems on a teammate. I am pretty sure that won’t alienate you from your teammates next season. NOT! I think this might be very bad for you as well. Seeing how the language in your new $16 million dollar contract for next season isn’t finished. Why the hangup? Oh, that’s right, people think you have lied in the past so the Giants are just trying to cover their asses in case you get indicted for lying to the Grand Jury or have any other legal issues.

It’s bad enough that all the Mark McGwire talk took away from Cal Ripken and Tony Gwynn being elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. And just two days after this, Barry Bonds and his amphetamine usage and subsequent failing of a drug test has to take from it too. The only obvious thing that comes from this is that he didn’t test positive for a second time. Or did he? Did the Major League Baseball gestapo cover it up? Obviously they might have since we are just know finding out about him failing a drug test. Yes, by the rules of the new labor agreement, his name didn’t have to be published. But yet somehow the story was made public.

Here’s to you Barry Bonds, I hope you enjoy prison
