Led By Matsuzaka Starters Have Been Spectacular

Pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka #28 of the Boston Red Sox watches the game with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on April 24, 2011 at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California. The Red Sox won 7-0.

As we all have seen the Boston Red Sox starting pitching has had an amazing turn around over the last week and a half.  On April 14th with the team reeling they got a rain out against Tampa Bay and then had the following day as a scheduled day off.  With the unscheduled two-day break manager Terry Francona and pitching coach Curt Young worked to re-arrange the starting staff.  In doing so, they skipped a John Lackey start and pushed back Daisuke Matsuzaka who had been rocked by the Rays only a few days earlier.

Little did Francona and Young know that after a Friday night loss to Toronto, who is now managed by the Red Sox former pitching coach John Farrell, that the their little plan would have such an effect on a team and possibly a season. Clay Buchholz started that Friday night game and struggled saying he couldn’t get comfortable on the mound all night.  He only turned in five innings and allowed three earned runs on three hits with three strikeouts and five walks in what was only a so-so performance.

But the next day when Josh Beckett took the mound something happened.  It was the start of an entire staff turn around and it would set the tone that lead to the current stretch of nine games in which the starters have turned in eight quality starts (when a pitcher pitches at least six innings and allows three earned runs or less).

To continue reading, click on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

In the next nine days the Red Sox as a team would go 8-1 only losing a 5-0 decision to Oakland in which Lackey was really good going six innings and allowing only one earned run on four hits while striking out  three and walking one.

In the eight wins by the club, the starting staff has earned seven of those wins. The only non-decision coming on Thursday night in Anaheim when the team won 4-2 in 11 innings but Beckett didn’t figure in the decision.

The only start of the nine that wasn’t a quality start belongs to Buchholz who went 5.1 innings against Oakland while earning a win as the club won 5-3.  Buchholz gave up six hits and four walks but allowed only one earned run while striking out two.

Since Beckett’s no decision on Thursday the starters Jon Lester, Matsuzaka and Lackey have not allowed an earned run over 20 innings in three games.  Over that span the starters have only allowed 11 hits and six walks while striking out 23 hitters.

In this streak the staff break down is as follows:

  • Buchholz 1-0 5.1 IP 6 H 1 R 1 ER 4 BB 2 K 1 HR 1.68 ERA
  • Beckett  1-0 15 IP 6 H 3 R 3 ER 4 BB 14 K 1 HR 1.80 ERA
  • Lackey  1-1 14 IP 10 H 1 R 1 ER 3 BB 9 K 0 HR 0.64 ERA
  • Lester 2-0 12 IP 10 H 1 R 1 ER 5 BB 14 K 0 HR 0.75 ERA
  • Matsuzaka 2-0 15 IP 2 H 0 R 0 ER 4 BB 12 K 0 HR 0.00 ERA
  • Staff Totals 7-1 61.1 IP 34H 6 R 6 ER 21 BB 50K 2 HR 0.88 ERA

I don’t know how much longer the starters can keep doing this but there comes a few times over the course of a long season when one aspect of the team seems to carry it.  Sometimes the hitters are hot and they carry the weight and other times it’s the pitchers turn.  Right now the pitchers, especially the starters, have been wonderful now if they can only get some of the bats going a little we will all see what everyone has felt that this team is capable of.

Red Sox News & Notes – 4/24

Daisuke Matsuzaka(notes) #18 of the Boston Red Sox is greeted by teammates in the dugout after he finished pitching the eighth inning against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on April 23, 2011 at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California.

Another great start from Daisuke Matsuzaka, two hits by Carl Crawford and two stolen bases by Jacoby Ellsbury last night. Oh my!!! Now what are we going to complain about here in Red Sox Nation.

We could bitch about the fact that Dustin Pedroia had no hits last night but he made a great play on the final out of the game to secure a 5-0 win over the Los Angeles Angels so that eliminates that thought. I’m sure we can find something to complain about but right now this team is playing like they should have out of the gates this season.

Whatever it might have been, the media and fans calling for his exile, the boo birds at Fenway Park, it appears Dice-K has really turned things around for himself. Every time he takes the mound for the Boston Red Sox, we really don’t know what we’re going to get. You can trace that back to his complete body of work since coming over from Japan.

Right now though, he looks the Dice-K who has led Japan to the last two WBC titles while being named the WBC MVP. This is the Dice-K, the Red Sox spent $103.1 million on.

The only hit he allowed almost killed him, literally. If he hadn’t gotten his glove up in time, he probably would have taken it off the head. But what got the job done for him was his fastball along with a his cutter, a nasty slider and his changeup which was effective due to the velocity of his fastball. And a long outing from him was needed since Jonathan Papelbon and Bobby Jenks had pitched in the last three games.

Good pitching is contagious right now for the Red Sox. Over the last eight starts (7-1), the Red Sox starters have gone 53.1 innings, with 44 strikeouts, 18 walks, two home runs allowed, 1.01 ERA and a 0.86 WHIP. Not too shabby.

Red Sox News & Notes – 4/23

Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Jon Lester(notes), left, shakes hands with outfielder Mike Cameron(notes), right, after the sixth inning of a baseball game against the Los Angeles Angels, Friday, April 22, 2011, in Anaheim, Calif.

The Boston Red Sox are beginning to play like they were expected to at the beginning of the season. Although the hitting has been suspect at times, the starting pitching over the last seven games has been outstanding.

Red Sox starters are 6-1 with a 1.17 ERA over those last seven games with the only loss coming to Oakland on Tuesday night. Riding the strength of the excellent starting pitching, they won their last three games, including last night’s 4-3 win over the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

Last night was no different as Jon Lester started the game by striking out the first four batters he faced. He did have some difficulties though when he allowed his first hit as he had a little trouble pitching out of the stretch. He was trying to paint the corners and wasn’t getting the calls from the home plate ump which ran his pitch count up.

The way he started though with the four strikeouts, one would have thought he’d go the full nine innings. But he was only able to throw six scoreless innings, allowing four hits and two walks while finishing the game with eight strikeouts to run his record to 2-1 with a 2.59 ERA.

It’s been nice to see Lester be able to put his early year struggles from the past behind him and pitch like the ace he has been after May during previous seasons.

Although he didn’t really throw the ball all that badly, Matt Albers made his first appearance after returning from the DL and allowed one run on two hits. Bobby Jenks, pitching in his third straight game, had a rough outing as he gave up two runs (one earned) on two hits and a walk. Jonathan Papelbon, also pitching in his third straight game, picked up his third straight save, giving him five so far in 2011.

While Carl Crawford continues to struggle at the dish (0-for-4), the Red Sox did get some timely hitting last night. Jacoby Ellsbury came through with a rare hit with a runner in scoring position (2-for-13 last night), knocking in Jarrod Saltalamacchia after he had doubled earlier in the third inning off of Angels starter Dan Haren. A Peter Bourjos error in the fourth off the bat of Crawford allowed The Legend of Jed Lowrie and J.D. Drew to score.

Drew would bring in the eventual winning run in the 6th after Lowrie doubled and went to third on a Vernon Wells error.

The Red Sox are definitely playing much better baseball than earlier in the season. Sure the hits aren’t coming with RISP, but the pitching has been great. And the bullpen has been much better as well. If the Red Sox can continue to play like this, the 2-10 start to the season will be a distant memory.

And in case you’re wondering, the Red Sox are only a 1/2 game out of third place in the AL East and just 3.5 games behind the Yankees for first.

From a Championship High To Getting High: Coombs-McDaniel Busted For Weed Possession

Jamal Coombs-McDaniel

Every year during UConn’s Spring Weekend, there is usually a plethora of people who get arrested for various offenses. On the first night of UConn’s 2011 Spring Weekend, there were 11 arrests. And included among them was UConn Huskies men’s basketball sophomore guard Jamal Coombs-McDaniel.

Coombs-McDaniel was busted along with Shakwaan Ishmale Simpkins and Stanley Darnel Winn by UConn Police Thursday night. The trio was found to be in possession of 5.6 grams of marijuana, a marijuana grinder and cigars used to smoke marijuana. They were charged with possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia.

There was no comment from the UConn men’s basketball program other than to say they are aware of the arrest.

Coombs-McDaniel was part of the UConn Men’s 2011 NCAA Championship run although he didn’t play as much over the final four games due to a knee injury that resulted in surgery two weeks ago. He did play in all 41 games this season, averaging 5.6 points, 2.6 rebounds in 16.6 minutes per game.

He has also spent a good portion of his two years at UConn in the doghouse of Jim Calhoun.  Given his tumultuous relationship with Calhoun, you have to wonder if this is the last straw for Coombs-McDaniel.

Red Sox News & Notes – 4/22

Dustin Pedroia(notes) #15 of the Boston Red Sox celebrates with Carl Crawford(notes) #13 after scoring a run on a sacrifice fly ball by Jed Lowrie(notes) in the 11th inning of the baseball game against Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim at Angel Stadium of Anaheim on April 21, 2011 in Anaheim, California. Red Sox defeated the Angels, 4-2.

While I was away for a few days, the Boston Red Sox finally picked up a road win when they split the series with the Oakland A’s. On Thursday night in Anaheim, CA, they made it two road wins in a row with a 4-2 win over the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in 11 innings.

The season story for the Red Sox has been the alarming amount of base runners they’ve left stranded. It was no different on Thursday night as they left 15 men on base. At one point, they had been walked 11 times and yet had only two runs to show for it.

Jacoby Ellsbury put an end to the LOB story in the 6th inning when he knocked in two with a single to right. And Adrian Gonzalez did the same thing when he plated J.D. Drew with a double in the 11th. Jed Lowrie also added to the cause when his sacrifice fly brought in Dustin Pedroia with the final run of the evening.

While Lowrie has been stealing headlines lately with his plate prowess, the MVP of the 2011 season so far has been Pedroia.

He was heavily involved in the Red Sox offense on Thursday night as he was on base five times on three hits and two walks. He also prevented a double play in the 11th when he got caught in a rundown between third and home and ended up getting back to the bad after avoiding the tag of Macier Izturis. This proved key as it gave Lowrie hit the sac fly to provide an insurance run.

But Pedroia’s big play of the night came in the eighth inning when Erick Aybar led off with an extra base hit off of Daniel Bard. Pedey took Drew’s relay throw and nailed Aybar at third. There’s a saying in baseball. Never make the first or last out at third base and that’s what Aybar did. Pedey’s throw and Aybar’s boneheaded baserunning gaffe saved the night for the Red Sox.

All this talk about the offense and we haven’t even broached the night of Josh Beckett, who started the season as the fourth starter but has clearly been the best pitcher this season for the local nine. He took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and was pretty dominant throughout the night. Of course that was until Torii Hunter planted a ball amongst the trees in center field in the seventh.

Other than that though, Beckett was outstanding. While he had trouble throwing his curveball for strikes at times (latter innings), his cutter was downright nasty and was definitely his most effective pitch of the night. He commanded it well and it had a little more velocity then we’ve seen from Beckett in the past.

The LOBsters are definitely worrisome right now especially when you have performance on the mound like Beckett’s. He definitely deserved the win last night but in the grand scheme of things, it not about individual stats, it’s about the team W.

And the Red Sox will definitely take that as they look to climb out of the 2-10 hole they started the season with.

We’ll be back later today with the tonight’s starting lineups, batter/pitcher matchups and links from the day. But for now enjoy the overnight links from the media by clicking on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.
