Afternoon Red Sox Delight – 5/1

Felix Hernandez (L), Tim Wakefield (R)

After a dismal April and first two games of the homestand, the Boston Red Sox look to once again salvage the finale of a series this time around against the Seattle Mariners this afternoon at Fenway Park.

First pitch for this afternoon is at 1:35 p.m. and the game will be televised by NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the Mariners television market, you can catch the game on Root Sports. And if you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to the game on the 2011 Red Sox Radio Network.

Tim Wakefield fills in today for Clay Buchholz who is battling a small case of the flu. Wake has no record with a 5.56 ERA in seven appearances this season. He made one start against the Mariners in 2010 taking the loss after allowing three runs in 5.2 innings. Overall in his career, he’s made 27 appearances (17 starts) against the Mariners and is 4-10 with a 4.18 ERA. He’s made 16 appearances (113 starts) against the M’s at Fenway Park and is 3-6 with a 3.74 ERA.

The reigning AL Cy Young Award winner Felix Hernandez looks to help his team to a sweep this afternoon. He’s made six starts in 2011 and is 3-2 with a 3.32 ERA. He made one start against the Red Sox in 2010 picking up the win after allowing two runs  (one earned) in 7.1 IP). He’s made eight career starts against the Red Sox and is 4-1 with a 2.91 ERA. He’s enjoyed great success at Fenway Park where he is 3-0 with a 1.23 ERA in four starts.

UConn Has Four Players Taken in 2011 NFL Draft

After waiting two days, Saturday was the first day that any UConn Huskies football players would hear there names called during the 2011 NFL Draft. Everyone expected that we would hear running back Jordan Todman’s named called probably during the third or fourth round but that was simply not the case.

UConn HuskiesIt turns out that fullback Anthony Sherman got to hear his name first as the Arizona Cardinals took him with the fifth pick of the 5th round (136th overall). Sherman should have a chance to make the Cardinals as a special teamer, a position he played so well during his days at UConn.

As the rest of the 5th round went on, Todman’s name wasn’t heard still as other running backs were coming off the board.

In the 6th round with the first pick, the Carolina Panthers got things started by taking linebacker Lawrence Wilson (166th overall). Finally, 17 picks later, Todman came off the board as he was drafted by the San Diego Chargers with the 18th pick of the 6th round (183rd overall).

And the Huskies players weren’t done being drafted after Todman as the Philadelphia Eagles took linebacker/defensive end Greg Lloyd II with the 34th pick of the 7th round  (237th overall).

The four draft picks for the Huskies ties the school record that was set back in 2009. Be sure to check out the 2011 NFL Draft Day quotes from all four Huskies that were selected.

Unfortunately for offensive lineman Zach Hurd and linebacker Scott Lutrus, they were not selected in the draft. And the even worse news for them is that while they both will probably sign contracts as undrafted rookie free agents, they will have to wait to do so until the NFL Lockout is resolved once again.

Our congratulations go out to all four Huskies selected. May your dreams of making an NFL roster come true.

Red Sox News & Notes – 4/30

Boston Red Sox pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka Daisuke Matsuzaka(notes) prepares to leave the mound after an injury against the Seattle Mariners during the fifth inning of an MLB baseball game in Boston, Friday, April 29, 2011.

Honestly, right now I’ve got no words for what’s going on. It’s been a frustrating ride as a fan of the Boston Red Sox so far this season. Just when things start to look up, they turn right back around again. Any chance of a .500 record in the month of April went out the window last night.

Daisuke Matsuzaka had been great in his last two starts, allowing just two hits and no runs. By the end of the first inning in the 5-4 loss to the Seattle Mariners at Fenway Park, Dice-K had already allowed two runs.

He struggled with his command all night long and then in the 5th inning, his fastball velocity dropped from 93-94 mph to 86-87 mph. Catcher Jason Varitek along with skipper Terry Francona noticed this and Francona removed Dice-K from the game with what was termed right elbow stiffness.

After the game, both Matsuzaka and Francona said he should be able to make his next start on Wednesday. But since the Red Sox have no off days during this 11-game homestand, they may have to turn to Tim Wakefield or even the Triple-A PawSox if Dice-K can’t go. I’m sure they’ll know a lot more today when he reports to the ballpark.

You can bet that will be one of the topics Tito will address in his pre-game meeting with reporters, that is if they aren’t sitting in the press box watching the Bruins game.

Is anybody else having flashbacks to the brief Eric Gagne days with Bobby Jenks right now?

Jenks has pretty much stunk up the joint as of late. And remember, he signed a two-year deal worth $12 million as insurance in case Jonathan Papelbon bolts during free agency. If Jenks continues to blow clam chowder chunks, Papelbon is setting himself up for a nice little pay day from the Red Sox if they so choose.

When Jenks came into the game, the Red Sox held a 4-3 lead and it looked like the Jenks, Daniel Bard and Papelbon end of the game plan was set up. But when he left the Red Sox were trailing 5-4 and they would see their last six batters of the night not mount an attack. If you go back to the final outs of the sixth inning, it was actually their last ten batters who couldn’t do anything.

It would be really nice to see the Red Sox put this dismal month of April behind by closing out the month with a win.

We’ll be back later with tonight’s lineups, batter/pitcher matchups and links from the day. But for now enjoy the overnight links by clicking on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

Red Sox News & Notes – 4/29

Closer Jonathan Papelbon(notes) #58 (C) of the Boston Red Sox celebrates their 6-2 win over the Baltimore Orioles at Oriole Park at Camden Yards on April 28, 2011 in Baltimore, Maryland

With Jon Lester on the mound for the Boston Red Sox last night, you had to figure they had a pretty decent chance to escape Baltimore with a win. After all, he had never lost to the Baltimore Orioles as he was 13-0 in 16 career starts against them.

And that’s exactly what happened last night in a 6-2 win which moved the Red Sox out of last place, a ½ game ahead of the Orioles. If the Red Sox can take the first two games of their three-game weekend set, they could escape April with a .500 record as they now sit at 11-13.

The Red Sox got Lester a 1-0 lead before even he threw his first pitch. But after the first inning, the score was tied at 1-1. After that though, Lester dominated the Orioles like he’s done in the past. He didn’t allow another hit until Vladimir Guerrero tied it up at 2-2 with a solo home run in the 6th.

Lester’s cutter and changeup were nasty last night. When he throws those two pitches for strikes, he can be as dominant as anybody out there and that showed. But even Lester can’t explain why he’s owned the Orioles in his career.

“If I knew the answer to that, I’d do well against everybody,” Lester said, shaking his head. “I just pitch well against this team. … I just really don’t know. I’m aware of the track record I have against them, but I don’t know how to explain it. I feel comfortable against them. I really like pitching here at this park, I’ve always felt good here.”

With the way the Red Sox offense has been going, it didn’t look like Lester would have a chance for his third win of the season.

The Red Sox had runners on second and third with no outs in the 6th inning of off Orioles starter Brad Bergesen. But he recovered and struck out Kevin Youkilis and David Ortiz. The Orioles then decided to intentionally walk J.D. Drew to get to a struggling Jarrod Saltalamacchia. It worked out to perfection for the Oreos as Salty flew out to the warning track.

Salty came up with the same situation in the 8th inning and the Red Sox holding a 3-2 lead. Youk reached on a leadoff walk from Orioles reliever Jim Johnson. Mike Gonzalez came in and gave up a single to Big Papi. Mike Cameron pinch-hit for Drew and walked setting the stage for Salty.

This time though, Salty came through as he hit a single bringing in two runs. Gonzalez then struck out Carl Crawford and gave way to Jason Berken who got Marco Scutaro, making a rare start, to pop out. But Jacoby Ellsbury came through with his third hit of the night to provide the final margin of 6-2.

With Ellsbury starting heat up at the top of the lineup, things should start to look up for the Red Sox. Skipper Terry Francona has always said as Ellsbury goes, the Red Sox can win. That basically means, if Ellsbury can get on base, good things will happen for the Red Sox. Now if they could only get Crawford on base since he’s a game changer as well.

Everyone’s been worried about the slow start of Adrian Gonzalez. And when I say slow start, I mean the home runs. He was hitting .290 before last night’s game but he came through with three hits and two RBIs. His two doubles both went to left field and with the homestand starting tonight, the Green Monster might get a few dents from Gonzo.

Hopefully the warmer weather means the Red Sox will begin to heat up. This team is just too good to be 11-13 right now.

Red Sox News & Notes – 4/28

The game of baseball can be a funny game at times yet it can be a cruel one as well. What amazes me the most is how one miscue can change the course of the game for better or for worse depending on who you’re rooting for.

Well that’s what happened to the Boston Red Sox in their 5-4 loss to the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday night at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

Baltimore Orioles' Luke Scott(notes) follows through on a two-run home run against the Boston Red Sox in the fourth inning of a baseball game, Wednesday, April 27, 2011, in Baltimore.Josh Beckett was well on his way to another great outing when a popup fell between center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury and second baseman Dustin Pedroia in the 4th inning with one out due to a little miscommunication. Beckett temporarily recovered as he got Vladimir Guerrero to pop out. But he fell behind Luke Scott 1-0 and on the next pitch Scott knocked the ball out of the park admiring it along the way to put the O’s up 2-0.

Beckett gave Scott a nice little stare down and it left us to wonder if Scott would see the light tower buzzed in his next AB. Nothing came of it but Beckett did say after the game, it was filed away in the ol’ noggin. He also had words with the home plate umpire at the end of the inning.

“Those things have a way of working themselves out,” he said.

“Is this TMZ? I thought we were talking about a baseball game. You want to know about bat-flips and talking to umpires,” said Beckett. “I think we should probably just stick to the game. I thought we did a good job battling back, and we came up one run short.”

Looking a little rattled, Beckett got behind Jones 2-0 and gave up another home run that put the O’s up 3-0.  The Oreos added another run in the 6th to go up 4-0 and it looked the Red Sox were going to lose their second straight game.

But a big rally in the 8th inning, led by a three-run homer by Kevin Youkilis tied it up at 4-all only to see Daniel Bard end up taking his third loss of the season after allowing a run in the bottom half of the inning.

Any momentum the Red Sox had built up on the California swing of this road trip looks to be lost right now. The starting pitching hasn’t been as good as it was then and up until the 8th inning last night, the offense appears to be stuck in neutral again. At some point, it has to start ticking on all cylinders. We’ve seen flashes of it but still haven’t seen the whole enchilada.

The Red Sox do have the right man on the mound tonight though as Jon Lester has owned the Orioles throughout his career. A win to end the road trip would be a good way to get things back on track as the local nine returns back home to Boston tomorrow night.

We’ll be back later with tonight’s lineups, batter/pitcher matchups and links from the day. But for now enjoy the overnight links by clicking on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.
