Afternoon Red Sox Delight – 4/27

Josh Beckett (L), Jeremy Guthrie (R)

After losing last night, the Boston Red Sox look to get back to their recent winning ways in the middle game of a three-game set with the Baltimore Orioles at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on NESN Plus in the Red Sox television market.  If you live in the Orioles television market, the game will be broadcast on MASN. And if you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to the game on the 2011 Red Sox Radio Network.

Josh Beckett has looked like his old self as of late as he looks to continue his recent run of success tonight. He’s made four starts so far this season and is 2-1 with a 1.93 ERA. He made two starts against the O’s in 2010 and was 0-1 with a 2.57 ERA (4 ER/14 IP). He’s made 14 career starts against the Orioles in his career and is 6-3 with a 3.53 ERA. 10 of those starts have come at Oriole Park at Camden Yards where he is 5-2 with a 2.94 ERA.

Jeremy Guthrie looks to help the Orioles to their second straight win over the Red Sox.  He’s made four starts this season and is 1-3 with a 3.12 ERA. Guthrie faced the Red Sox three times in 2010 and was 0-2 with a 5.71 ERA. He’s made 15 career appearances (14 starts) against the Red Sox and is 1-7 with a 4.94 ERA.

Red Sox News & Notes – 4/27

Can you name the only Boston Red Sox starter without a quality start this season?

Give up? Well, it was last night’s starter Clay Buchholz.

Catcher Jason Varitek(notes) #33 talks with starting pitcher Clay Buchholz(notes) #11 of the Boston Red Sox on the mound during the seventh inning of their game against the Baltimore Orioles at Oriole Park at Camden Yards on April 26, 2011 in Baltimore, Maryland.Despite the fact that he won in his last outing, Buchholz has yet to fire off a quality start (6 IP, three earned runs or less) this season. Despite the fact the Red Sox were losing last night 3-1 in the 7th, he was in line for his first quality start until the Baltimore Orioles scored their fourth and final run of the night in the 4-1 win.

Buchholz surrendered a career-high 12 hits last night but ironically enough three of the Baltimore runs came on sacrifice fly. The first one came on Matt Wieters infield single that went off of the first base bag.

Buchholz definitely doesn’t look like the pitcher he was in 2010. He’s looking more like the pitcher that was lost in 2008. There was a reason the Red Sox kept in the minors during 2009 for the better part of the season. He wasn’t mature enough. I’m not saying that he isn’t mature enough, he is. He earned his contract extension because he had matured and pitched well.

But right now, he’s simply not executing as well as did in 2010. Maybe he misses John Farrell? But right now, for the Red Sox to continue their climb out of the deep hole they dug, they’ll need Buchholz to show his 2010 form every fifth day.

Over the past few seasons, the Red Sox have had a hard time when facing pitchers they’ve never seen before. Enter Orioles starter Zach Britton, who was making just his fifth career start. Even though Britton is a lefty, he’s had better success against right handed hitters this season.

Dustin Pedroia and Jason Varitek were the only righties to get a hit off of him. Jacoby Ellsbury, J.D. Drew and David Ortiz had the other hits. Kevin Youkilis brought in the only run of the night on a sacrifice fly.

These two teams were heading in opposite directions before the start of the game.

The Red Sox had battled their way out of the 2-10 hole by winning eight of their last nine games, including five straight. Meanwhile the Orioles had won just two of their last 12 games after starting the season 6-1. But last night, the Orioles were the better team because they got better starting pitching; something that had carried the Red Sox over the nine game stretch.

Another strong start by Josh Beckett tonight could go a long way here. Now we just need Buchholz to get his confidence back.

We’ll be back later with tonight’s lineups, batter/pitcher matchups and links from the day. But for now enjoy the overnight links by clicking on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

Afternoon Red Sox Delight – 4/26

Clay Buchholz (L), Zach Britton (R)

After a day off on Monday, the Boston Red Sox look to continue their winning ways against the Baltimore Orioles in the first of a three-game set at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

Clay Buchholz looks to keep the string of quality starts by Red Sox starting pitchers going in his fifth start of 2011. In his previous four starts, he is 1-2 with a 5.31 ERA.  He made two starts against the Orioles in 2010 and didn’t allow a run in 15 innings of work while going 1-0. He’s enjoyed good success against the Orioles in nine games (eight starts) as he is 5-2 with a 2.98 ERA. In five games (four starts) at Oriole Park at Camden Yards, he is 3-1 with a 4.81 ERA including his no-hitter back in 2007.

Rookie Zach Britton makes his fifth career start for manager Buck Showalter. In his four starts so far in 2011, he is 3-1 with a 4.16 ERA. Two of those starts have come at Oriole Park at Camden Yards where he is 2-0 with a 1.98 ERA (3 ER/13.2 IP). Obviously, he’s never faced the Red Sox in his career.

Red Sox News & Notes – 4/26

The Boston Red Sox had the day off on Monday after flying across country to Baltimore as they get ready for a three-game set with the Orioles. With the way the Red Sox have been playing as of late, you really have to wonder if the day off was a good thing.

Boston Red Sox closing pitcher Jonathan Papelbon(notes) celebrates striking out Los Angeles Angels' Howie Kendrick(notes) for the final out of a baseball game to give the Red Sox a 4-3 victory, Friday, April 22, 2011, in Anaheim, Calif. You don’t want to see them lose any momentum they built up in Anaheim but you know they cherish their days off. The bullpen is definitely well rested now since the starters have been great as of late. Sure Bobby Jenks and Jonathan Papelbon pitched three days in a row but now they’ll have had two full days off and will be ready to go tonight.

We all expected this from the Red Sox we just didn’t expect the 2-10 start. But as I said yesterday, things are looking up. Now, let’s hope that they can continue this in Baltimore before returning home to Beantown.

I do wonder if the Boston media will drudge up the past with Buck Showalter’s comments about Theo Epstein during spring training. My best guess is that someone will ask and Showalter will say it’s a thing of the past.

We’ll be back later with tonight’s lineups, batter/pitcher matchups and links from the day. But for now enjoy the overnight links by clicking on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

New Turf For Rentschler Field

EAST HARTFORD, Conn. – Beginning the week of April 25, 2011, the turf at Rentschler Field, the 40,000-seat stadium that serves as the home of the University of Connecticut Huskies football team, will be replaced. After eight seasons of athletic use, including football, soccer, rugby and ice hockey games, coupled with normal wear and tear, the field is ready for a replacement.

The turf surface at Rentschler Field is being replaced. After annual testing of the rootzone layer (the sub-base organic layer between the grass and the base layer of sand), it was determined for proper grass strength and growth, as well as drainage and health of grass surface, Rentschler Field should reduce this layer and restore the field to its original levels.

“The State has invested over $92 million in the Stadium and it is critical that we continue to maintain the facility in first-class condition and to attract the very best in sports and entertainment events,” said James Abromaitis of the Office of Policy and Management / Capital City Economic Development Authority. “In these tough economic times, we are fortunate to have a modest capital reserve account in place to cover the cost of this work.”

To continue reading, click on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

“We appreciate the continuing commitment shown by OPM and Bushnell Management Services to provide our football team with an outstanding playing surface and one that is safe for all who utilize Rentschler Field,” said UConn Director of Athletics Jeffrey Hathaway. “With seven home games in the upcoming 2011 season, we are looking forward to an exciting year of UConn Football under the leadership of head coach Paul Pasqualoni.”

Michael Fresher, Chief Operations Officer and Chief Financial Officer, Bushnell Management Services said, “Rentschler Field has developed a reputation as one of the finest playing surfaces in the country. Now is the perfect time to make sure the field continues to be one of the best.”

Rentschler Field, through its consultant Millennium Turf, has secured sod from Tuckahoe Farms in Hammonton, New Jersey. The contractor is Carolina Green Corp. of Indian Trail, North Carolina.

The project is scheduled to take approximately two weeks and will need an additional six-to-eight weeks of growing time to be ready for play. Bushnell Management Services is a venue management arm of The Bushnell, and is contracted by The State of Connecticut to serve as building manager for the 40,000-seat Rentschler Field stadium.

Red Sox News & Notes – 4/25

Carl Crawford(notes) #13 of the Boston Red Sox celebrates with teammates after the game with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on April 24, 2011 at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California.

Nine games ago, the Boston Red Sox found themselves with a 2-10 record. Nothing was clicking. The starting pitching and the hitting weren’t there yet. But over the last nine games, the starting pitching for the Red Sox has been great and the hitting while suspect at times, has been coming through when needed.

That story remained the same on Sunday afternoon at Angel Stadium of Anaheim as John Lackey fired off eight scoreless innings against his former club, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, in a 7-0 win. Lackey has now faced his former team four times and has come away a winner all four times. He’s allowed just eight runs against them in 29.1 innings (2.45 ERA).

As Steve pointed out last night, it’s been the starting pitching carrying this team. And right now, no one in the starting rotation wants to mess this streak up.

“Sure, there’s definitely a sense of not wanting to be the guy to stop the streak,” Lackey said. “It’s a pretty good run, but it’s not unexpected. We’ve got some guys here with some pretty good track records.”

“I think it obviously helps to see somebody do it. You just try to follow it and not screw it up,” Jon Lester said after Sunday’s game. “We’re just executing pitches right now. That’s the main thing. We’re very confident. We just have to stay healthy. We’ve been in this position before with a good rotation and weren’t able to stay healthy, which didn’t get us anywhere. So if everyone keeps taking their turn everything should take care of itself.”

During the four-game sweep of the Angels, the only starting pitcher to give up any runs was Josh Beckett, who allowed a two-run homer to Torii Hunter

The Red Sox hitters made things a little easier for Lackey on Sunday as well. It didn’t hurt that they gave him a 3-0 lead to work with before he even came to the mound.

Adrian Gonzalez brought in Jacoby Ellsbury on a double after Ellsbury had led off the inning with a double. David Ortiz brought in Gonzalez with a single and Mike Cameron brought in Kevin Youkilis on a fielder’s choice.

Carl Crawford was all smiles in the 6th inning when he hit his first home run in a Red Sox uniform. He’s really been swinging the bat well as of late and added another two hits on Sunday after having two on Saturday night. As he continues to get more comfortable at the plate, you can see why the Red Sox gave him the big contract. Yes I know we’ve seen him wreak havoc against us for the past year.

This great run by the Red Sox has moved them up in the standings to third place, just a 1/2 game behind the Tampa Bay Rays for second place and 3.5 games behind the Yankees for first. With just a week left in the month of April, it’s quite possible the Red Sox could get out of the month with at least a .500 record or maybe even better.

Now after that 2-10 start, I’m pretty sure nobody envisioned that.

The Red Sox are off today so look for the pitching matchups with the Baltimore Orioles in a while. But for now, enjoy the overnight links from the media by clicking on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.
