Red Sox Acquire Erik Bedard from Mariners

Seattle Mariners starting pitcher Erik Bedard waits for a new batter after giving up a 2-run home run to Atlanta Braves' Freddie Freeman in the seventh inning of a baseball game Monday, June 27, 2011, in Seattle.

In what’s turned out to be an interesting three-team trade between the Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers and Seattle Mariners, the one thing that’s consistently being reported is that the Red Sox are getting Erik Bedard from Seattle.

The trade breaks down like this:

As SoxProspects.com points out on Twitter, Chiang, Fife and Federowicz are all Rule 5 eligible after the season. That means the Red Sox would have had to place them on the 40-man roster or risk losing them in the Rule 5 draft. Brian MacPherson of the Providence Journal also said on Twitter that the Red Sox must be happy with the defensive progress of catcher Ryan Lavarnway to trade Federowicz.

Obviously there’s the same injury concerns out there that the Red Sox had with Rich Harden with Bedard coming over. I’d have to say the Red Sox must not be too worried about it to make this deal.

Bedard just returned from the disabled list on Friday night and was shelled by the Tampa Bay Rays. In 1.1 innings, he allowed five runs on three hits with four walks. He made 16 starts for the Mariners this year and is 4-7 with a 3.45 ERA.

It’s going to be interesting to see what the Red Sox have in store with Andrew Miller know that Bedard is around. Miller received a no decision in his start today after allowing three runs on 10 hits and one walk with eight strikeouts in 5.1 innings. The walk numbers are encouraging considering what’s happened in the past this season but is it enough.

I’m sure we’ll learn more after the Red Sox complete their game on Sunday afternoon against the Chicago White Sox.

Morning Red Sox Delight – 7/31

Andrew Miller (L), Mark Buehrle (R)

After winning last night, the Boston Red Sox look to take the rubber game of a three-game set with the Chicago White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field this afternoon.

Today’s first pitch is scheduled for 2:10 p.m. and the game will be broadcast in the Red Sox television market on NESN. If you live in the White Sox television market, you can watch the game on Comcast SportsNet Chicago. If you don’t live in either market you’re in luck as well as TBS will have national coverage of the game outside of the Red Sox and White Sox television markets. And if you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to the game on the 2011 Red Sox Radio Network.

Andrew Miller looks to solidify his spot in the rotation while putting his control issues behind him in his eight start of the season. In his previous seven starts, Miller is 4-1 with a 5.45 ERA. He has not faced the White Sox since 2007 when he was a member of the Detroit Tigers. He’s made three career appearances (two starts) against the White Sox and is 0-1 with a 9.58 ERA (11 ER/10.1 IP). He’s made two appearances (one start) on the South Side where he has no record with a 7.11 ERA (5 ER/5.1 IP).

Mark Buehrle makes his 21st start and 11th at home for the ChiSox this afternoon. In his previous 20 starts, Buehrle is 8-5 with a 3.22 ERA. He has not faced the Red Sox in 2011 but was 0-1 with a 5.54 ERA (8 ER/13 IP) in 2010. He’s made 16 appearances (15 starts) against the Red Sox in his career and he is 6-6 with a 4.57 ERA. He’s made ten appearances (nine starts) against the Red Sox at U.S. Cellular Field where he is 3-4 with a 4.33 ERA.

Red Sox News & Notes – 7/31

Adrian Gonzalez(notes) #28 of the Boston Red Sox is greeted by teammate David Ortiz(notes) #34 after hitting a two-run home run in the ninth inning against the Chicago White Sox on July 30, 2011 at U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago, Illinois.

As the MLB Trade Deadline approaches, the Boston Red Sox do have one less thing to worry about it when it comes to their starting rotation. And no, I’m not talking about the health of Clay Buchholz but rather Jon Lester.

Lester made his return from the DL last week and went just 5.1 innings. Last night was a totally different story though.

With the help of his catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia, the pair did a good job of keeping the Chicago White Sox batters at bay for the game. Lester used all of his arsenal last night and commanded and located all of them well. He pounded the zone and threw strikes. More importantly, he did it very efficiently.

Jon Lester(notes) #31 of the Boston Red Sox pitches agianst the Chicago White Sox on July 30, 2011 at U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago, Illinois. He entered the 7th inning at just 62 pitches, a little over 10 an inning up to that point. He would end up throwing 36 pitches over the final two innings with the only damage being a home run by Gordan Beckham in the 8th that cut the Red Sox lead to 5-2 and saw Jonathan Papelbon warming up for the 9th.

The offense made sure that Paps wasn’t needed though as they exploded for five more runs in the top half of the 9th.

After a Dustin Pedroia single, Adrian Gonzalez hit a no doubt home run to push the lead to 7-2 and immediately made Paps sit back down. They weren’t done yet though as Kevin Youkilis followed the Gonzo shot with a solo one of his own. Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Marco Scutaro would add RBIs in the inning as well to push it to the final margin of 10-2.

For the first four innings last night, it looked as though the Red Sox would suffer yet another defeat to the hands of Ozzie Guillen‘s White Sox. They were only able to manage two hits up until the 5th inning when things changed for the better for the visiting nine.

Carl Crawford led off the inning, stole second and reached third on a throwing error by A.J. Pierzynski. Salty doubled to bring him in and he then came into score on a Scutaro sac fly after a Josh Reddick bunt single moved him over. Two batters later another sacrifice fly, this one from Pedroia pushed it to 3-0. After an intentional walk to Gonzo, Youk’s infield single scored Jacoby Ellsbury and chased Humber from the game.

Knowing Lester is back and being his old dominant self is great news for the team. With Josh Beckett being the most reliable pitcher lately, Lester’s outing shows the top two guys are solid. John Lackey right now is hit or miss when he steps to the mound and for the most part Tim Wakefield has been decent. It’s today’s starter Andrew Miller where things are a little sketchy.

With the uncertainty of the health of Buchholz, the Red Sox did make a move during the game to acquire Rich Harden from the Oakland A’s for Triple-A first baseman Lars Anderson. But as I was going to bed earlier this morning, the trade broke down, apparently over the medicals of Harden.

So now we’ll sit back and watch the rumors fly today until 4 p.m. when the trade deadline comes up to see whether or not Theo Epstein makes another move to bring another starter to the Red Sox.

We’ll be back in a short while with this afternoon’s lineups, batter/pitcher matchups and links from the morning/early afternoon. But for now, enjoy the overnight links from the media by clicking on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

Red Sox Acquire Rich Harden From A’s Or Not?

Rich Harden #18 of the Oakland Athletics delivers a pitch against the New York Yankees on July 23, 2011 at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx borough of New York City.

UPDATE 1:05 AM 7/31: It appears that Harden isn’t coming to the Red Sox after all.

RT @abc7newsBayArea: AP: Trade deal that would send Oakland A’s right-hander Rich Harden to Boston Red Sox has fallen through.

RT @susanslusser: Harden says he’s staying. “I’m happy to be part of this organization. I’m looking forward to starting Tuesday.” #Athletics

While the whole Ubaldo Jimenez saga was going on Saturday night, Tim Britton of the Providence Journal tweeted that the Pawtucket Red Sox had removed first baseman Lars Anderson from the game. With that saga still ongoing, Twitter became a buzz with multiple rumors of where Anderson could be heading.

I did joke that if I thought he would be going anywhere, it would be to Oakland. I just didn’t see the Red Sox meeting the high demands of the Colorado Rockies for Jimenez. Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle sent out a tweet that the Red Sox were working to acquire Rich Harden from the Oakland Athletics.

Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe put the Anderson rumors to rest by basically confirming that Anderson would be returning to the area where he grew up. Anderson went to high school in Sacramento.

So it turns out that pending a physical the Red Sox will receive Rich Harden from the A’s in exchange for Anderson and a player to be named later.

To continue reading, click on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

Anderson would have had to move positions to stay with the Red Sox since he wasn’t going to be the first baseman any time soon with some dude named Adrian Gonzalez there. So in the end this could end up being a good move for him.

In 132 games for the PawSox, Anderson was hitting .261 with 10 home runs and 57 RBIs. He made 18 appearances for the Red Sox in 2010 where he hit .200 with four RBIs.

Harden has been injury prone in his career and missed some time this season with the A’s. In five starts this season, he was 2-1 with a 4.30 ERA.

The acquisition of Harden will give the Red Sox some pitching depth if Clay Buchholz can’t return to the rotation any time soon. Plus he’ll provide insurance if Andrew Miller can’t work out his control issues quickly. And with a start on Sunday, Miller could end up being the odd man out.

But until Harden passes his physical and officially becomes a member of the Red Sox, we won’t know what Terry Francona and Theo Epstein will have in mind for him. One thing we do know is that Harden is familiar with Curt Young, the Red Sox pitching coach who was in Oakland last year.

I’m sure Theo isn’t done and we’ll know by 4 p.m. tomorrow if the Red Sox add any other players.

Afternoon Red Sox Delight – 7/30

Jon Lester (L), Philip Humber (L)

After falling last night, the Boston Red Sox look to pick up what seems to be a rare win against the Chicago White Sox tonight at U.S. Cellular Field in game two of a three-game set.

Tonight’s first pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. and the game will be broadcast in the Red Sox television market on NESN. If you live in the White Sox television market, you can watch the game on WGN. And if you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to the game on the 2011 Red Sox Radio Network.

Jon Lester makes just his second start since returning from the disabled list before his last start. In 19 starts this season, Lester is 10-4 with a 3.23. He was roughed in his only appearance against the White Sox this season when he allowed seven runs in 5.2 innings to take the loss back on May 30th. He’s made six career starts against the South Siders and is 2-3 with a 5.94 ERA. For of those starts have come on the South Side where he is 2-2 with a 5.25 ERA.

Philip Humber looks to keep the White Sox’s success against the Red Sox in his 18th start of 2011 for Ozzie Guillen. In his previous 17 starts, he is 8-6 with a 3.27 ERA. He picked up the win against the Red Sox on May 31st when he allowed four runs in 7.2 innings. That start on May 31st marks his only career appearance against the Red Sox and that came at Historic Fenway Park.

Red Sox Acquire Mike Aviles From Royals

Just two days ago, we saw Mike Aviles playing for the Kansas City Royals when they were at Historic Fenway Park taking on the Boston Red Sox. Now he is a member of the Red Sox.

Mike Aviles #13 of the Kansas City Royals hits an RBI bunt in the 14th inning against the Boston Red Sox on July 26, 2011 at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts.Earlier this afternoon, the Red Sox traded utility infielder/outfielder Yamaico Navarro and minor league pitcher Kendal Volz to the Royals for Aviles. He is expected to be in uniform tonight for the Red Sox in Chicago.

In 53 games for the Royals this season, Aviles was hitting .222 with five home runs, 31 RBIs and 10 stolen bases. Navarro has split time with Triple-A Pawtucket and the big club this season.

In 16 games for the Red Sox, he was hitting .216 with one home run and three RBIs. With the PawSox he was hitting .258 with five home runs and 13 RBIs in 34 games.

Volz was a 9th round pick of the Red Sox in 2009 and has spent the 2011 season with the Salem Red Sox. In 31 games out of the bullpen, he was 2-3 with a 3.33 ERA and two saves.

Red Sox News & Notes – 7/30

Sometimes in baseball, one key moment can change the momentum during a game. Well that’s exactly what happened to the Boston Red Sox at U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago last night.

Kevin Youkilis(notes) #20 of the Boston Red Sox reacts after striking out against Gavin Floyd(notes) of the Chicago White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field on July 29, 2011 in Chicago, Illinois.Already holding a 1-0 lead on the strength of a third inning home run from Jarrod Saltalamacchia, the Red Sox found themselves with a bases loaded situation in the top of the 6th. They even had the right man at the plate in Kevin Youkilis against Chicago White Sox starter Gavin Floyd.

Youk had worked the count to 2-2 before taking a called strike three to end the bases loaded threat. And from there, things changed for the Red Sox.

Juan Pierre, who had already struck out twice against Tim Wakefield, led off the bottom of the inning with a bunt single. Omar Vizquel sacrificed him over to third. With Paul Konerko at the plate, Salty couldn’t get himself in front of a knuckleball that allowed Pierre to third. Konerko ended up bring him in with a sac fly to tie the game up.

They always say leadoff walks can come back to haunt you. Wake ended up walking Carlos Quentin to start the 7th. The one mistake pitch he made all night came to A.J. Pierzynski who took it out of the ballpark to put the White Sox up 3-1.

Matt Thornton and Sergio Santos shut down the Red Sox the rest of the way to send them to their second straight loss. Fortunately for the Red Sox, their lead remains at 2.5 games as the New York Yankees fell to the Baltimore Orioles.

Honestly, other than that one pitch to Pierzynski, Wake was outstanding last night. His knuckleball had an excellent movement all night but unfortunately he’ll have to wait until his next start to try and pick up career win No. 200.

Floyd came the Red Sox hitters at bay for most of the night. He used all of his pitches effectively locating them with relative ease. While the Red Sox have struggled against the White Sox in recents years, they still haven’t been able to figure out Floyd. Last night’s win for him was his sixth career win against the Red Sox.

The Red Sox also remain the only American League team he hasn’t lost to in his career.

The night also saw the Red Sox without Adrian Gonzalez, who missed the game with a stiff neck. It obviously had felt better as he was in the on deck circle before the last out was recorded by Santos. It also saw the 25-game hit streak of Dustin Pedroia can end. As I said last night on Twitter, I’m guessing that Pedroia goes out and gets three hits tonight.

A win would be much nicer I’m sure. Figuring out the White Sox would be even better than that.

We’ll be back later today with this evening’s lineups, batter/pitcher matchups and links from the day. But for now, enjoy the overnight links from the media by clicking on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.
