Afternoon Red Sox Delight – 7/29

Tim Wakefield (L), Gavin Floyd (R)

After splitting a four-game set with the Kansas City Royals, the Boston Red Sox continue their 11-game swing against AL Central teams. Tonight the Red Sox are in the Windy City to begin a three-game set with the Chicago White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field.

Tonight’s first pitch is scheduled for 8:10 p.m. and the game will be broadcast in the Red Sox television market on NESN. If you live in the White Sox television market, you can watch the game on Comcast SportsNet Chicago. If you don’t live in either market, you may be in luck as the game is also scheduled to be on the MLB Network. And if you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to the game on the 2011 Red Sox Radio Network.

Tim Wakefield goes in search of career win No. 200 tonight in his 14th start (23 appearances) of 2011. In his previous 22 appearances (13 starts), Wake is 6-3 with a 5.15 ERA. He’s faced the Chisox once this season, picking up a no decision after allowing four runs in six innings back on June 1st. He’s made 33 career appearances (22 starts) against the White Sox and is 7-12 with a 4.97 ERA. 18 of those games (11 starts) have come on the South Side where he is 4-7 with a 4.83 ERA.

Gavin Floyd makes his 21st appearance (20th start) of 2011 for the always outspoken Ozzie Guillen. In his previous 20 appearances (19 starts), Floyd is 8-9 with a 4.11 ERA. He was matched up with Wakefield back on June 1st and picked up the win after allowing four runs in 6.2 innings of work. He’s made seven appearances (six starts) against the Red Sox in his career and is 5-0 with a 3.83 ERA. Three of those starts have come at U.S. Cellular Field where he is 2-0 with a 5.29 ERA. The Red Sox are the only American League team he hasn’t lost to over his career.

Red Sox News & Notes – 7/29

Billy Butler(notes) #16 of the Kansas City Royals celebrates after hitting a home run against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park on July 28, 2011 in Boston, Massachusetts.

If it weren’t for a rare one bad inning from Josh Beckett on Thursday afternoon, the Boston Red Sox might have beaten the Kansas City Royals. And if it weren’t the wind knocking down a Carl Crawford fly ball, the Red Sox would have walked with a 5-4 win instead of falling 4-3.

Crawford came into the game as a pinch-hitter for Jason Varitek in the bottom of the 9th with Drew Sutton on first base and one out in the inning. Royals closer had Crawford at 1-2 and threw a slider down and in that Crawford absolutely crushed to right field. Unfortunately for him, the wind knocked it down and Jeff Francoeur was able to make a basket catch for the second out of the inning. Yamaico Navarro would strike out to end the game.

According to ESPN Stats, Crawford’s fly ball out would have been a home run in all 29 other big league parks. Of course if he hit it about 10-15 feet right of where the ball was caught, it would have wrapped itself around the corner at Pesky’s Pole.

Beckett was seemingly cruising right along through the first three innings. He allowed just one hit while striking out four. Thanks to a double play ball off the bat of Francoeur, he had faced the minimum nine batters.

He entered the fateful 4th inning with a 2-0 lead after three straight hits to start the 3rd off Luke Hochevar. Varitek had gotten it started with a single followed by a Navarro double. Jacoby Ellsbury brought them both in with a single for that 2-0 lead.

Josh Beckett(notes) #19 of the Boston Red Sox reacts against the Kansas City Royals at Fenway Park on July 28, 2011 in Boston, Massachusetts. In that 4th though, Beckett lost command of all of his pitches. He was basically all over the place. The pitches that got hit weren’t right at anyone. In other words, they were solid base hits.

Beckett walked Mitch Maier and Alex Gordon only to leave a fastball over the plate for Billy Butler to hit into the Green Monster. After the game, Beckett said that was the only ball hit to someone and it was to fan in the Monster seats. After an out from Eric Hosmer, Francouer reached on a Sutton error and came around on a Mike Moustakas double to make it 4-2.

After that Beckett essentially settled back down while Hochevar kept the Red Sox offense at bay.

The Red Sox would get their final run in the 8th when Dustin Pedroia led off the inning with a home run into the Monster seats. It turned out to be the hit that extended Pedroia’s hitting streak to 25 games. Of course only Pedey would have a flair for the dramatic like that. If you had seen the look on Terry Francona’s face after the home run, you knew the guys weren’t going to hear the end of it for a while.

Of course with the way Pedroia talks, you weren’t going to anyways.

It’s disappointing whenever the Red Sox lose. But when you go 2-2 against the last place team in the AL Central, it’s even more so. Nothing against the Royals at all, they have a good young hitting team. But it just seems like whenever Beckett is pitching, the Red Sox bats go to sleep.

Despite his one bad inning, he deserves better. With all the injuries in the rotation this year, he’s been the main cog out there. And while we expect him to win every time out, it would be nice to see the offense break out for him just once like they seemingly do with the other starters in the Red Sox rotation.

The Red Sox are now off to Chicago for a quick three-game road trip in the Windy City against the White Sox.

We’ll be back later today with this evening’s lineups, batter/pitcher matchups and links from the day. But for now, enjoy the overnight links from the media by clicking on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

Morning Red Sox Delight – 7/28

Luke Hochevar (L), Josh Beckett (R)

After two straight nights of offensive explosions, the Boston Red Sox look to wrap up the four-game set with the Kansas City Royals with their third straight win this afternoon at Historic Fenway Park.

Today’s first pitch is scheduled for 1:35 p.m. and the game will be broadcast in the Red Sox television market on NESN. If you live in the Royals  television market, you can watch the game on FOX Sports Kansas City. And if you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to the game on the 2011 Red Sox Radio Network.

Josh Beckett hopes to get some of that run support his fellow starters have gotten lately in his 20th start of 2011. In his previous 19 starts, Beckett is 9-3 with a 2.07 ERA. He picked up the win in his only start against the Royals in 2010 after allowing three runs in seven innings. Beckett’s had great success against the Royals in his career as he is 6-0 with a 2.26 ERA in eight starts. Three of those starts have come at the Fens where he is 2-0 with a 1.44 ERA.

Luke Hochevar makes a team-leading 22nd start for the Royals this afternoon. In his previous 21 starts, Hochevar is 6-8 with a 5.29 ERA. He last faced the Red Sox in 2009 when he went 1-1 with a 9.00 ERA (11 ER/11 IP) in two starts. Overall in his career, he’s made four career starts against the Red Sox and is 1-3 with a 7.94 ERA. Two of those starts have come at the Fens where he is 1-1 with a 6.75 ERA (9 ER/12 IP).

Red Sox News & Notes – 7/28

David Ortiz(notes) #34 of the Boston Red Sox hits a grand slam in the fourth inning as Brayan Pena(notes) #27 of the Kansas City Royals catches on July 27, 2011 at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts.

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before. John Lackey gives up early runs but somehow manages to pick up the win for the Boston Red Sox.

Well that’s exactly what happened on Wednesday night at the Fens against the Kansas City Royals as Lackey would give up three early runs only to see the offense explode again. They would get him a total of 10 runs in the 1st, 2nd and 4th innings.

Now you have to wonder if today’s starter Josh Beckett was thinking that he’ll get some of this support in his start. He’s received 3.71 runs a game while Lackey had gotten 6.41 runs in his previous 16 starts before Wednesday. That figure will again climb.

As it’s been in the past, Lackey struggled with the execution of pitches. He left pitches out over the plate and the Royals took advantage. I guess the entire blame can’t fall on Lackey though as Yamaico Navarro misjudged a fly ball in left that went off the bottom of the Green Monster and that was followed by a Kevin Youkilis error at third.

John Lackey(notes) #41 of the Boston Red Sox reacts after giving up a three run homer in the first inning against the Kansas City Royals on July 27, 2011 at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts. That tough first inning put the Red Sox in a 3-0 hole. But Jacoby Ellsbury and Dustin Pedroia made sure that gap would be narrowed with back-to-back solo home runs to start the bottom half. And like they’ve done for the better part of the season now, they didn’t stop there.

They would add three more runs in the second and five more in the fourth, four of them coming off the bat of David Ortiz who cleared the bases with a grand slam.

Ellsbury and Pedroia continue their hotness at the plate as they both went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a home run. Ellsbury also added a stolen base. And even Adrian Gonzalez continues to do the job at the plate as he had a three hit night with three RBIs. Darnell McDonald and Navarro also had two hits.

Right now the main concern for the Red Sox is their starting pitching. Right now, Beckett is the most consistent pitcher the Red Sox have. Jon Lester will probably be back there sooner rather than later. The problems lies that Lackey, Andrew Miller and Tim Wakefield are having trouble. And the news of Clay Buchholz going to see another specialist doesn’t sound good.

The obvious ETA for Buchholz to return is probably late August to early September which is great and all because he’d be fresh for a possible playoff run. But what are the Red Sox to do in the meantime.

I mean the offense is good but how many times are they going to be needed to carry the pitching staff. At some point, the bad starting pitching will come back to bite them in the buttocks. So it will be interesting to see what Theo Epstein and the rest of his brain trust have up their sleeves before Sunday’s 4 p.m. trade deadline.

The Red Sox also get the game back they lost to the New York Yankees on Monday. The Seattle Mariners finally ended their 17-game losing streak with a win over the Yanks on Wednesday afternoon.

We’ll be back in a short while with this afternoon’s lineups, batter/pitcher matchups and links from the morning. But for now, enjoy the overnight links from the media by clicking on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

Afternoon Red Sox Delight – 7/27

Bruce Chen (L), John Lackey (R)

After yet another offensive explosion last night at Historic Fenway Park, the Boston Red Sox look to make it two wins in a row against the Kansas City Royals in game three of a four-game set.

Tonight’s first pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. and the game will be broadcast in the Red Sox television market on NESN. If you live in the Royals  television market, you can watch the game on FOX Sports Kansas City. And if you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to the game on the 2011 Red Sox Radio Network.

John Lackey goes for his fourth straight win in as many starts in his 17th start of 2011. In his previous 16 outings, Lackey is 8-8 with a 6.28 ERA. While he’s never faced the Royals as a member of the Red Sox, he has made eight career starts against them. In those eight starts, Lackey is 2-3 with a 3.21 ERA.

Red Sox News & Notes – 7/27

Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz(notes) follows through on a double scoring two runs as Kansas City Royals catcher Matt Treanor(notes), left, watches during the third inning of a baseball game, Tuesday, July 26, 2011, at Fenway Park in Boston.

We didn’t get a chance to recap the debacle on Monday night at the Fens after server issues at headquarters yesterday but we’re back today.

After Monday night’s low scoring affair between the Kansas City Royals and Boston Red Sox, the two teams broke into a slugfest thanks to some not so stellar starting pitching last night. When all was said and done, the Red Sox walked off the field with a 13-9 win.

While the loss on Monday allowed the New York Yankees to move to within two games of the Red Sox in the AL East, the win on Tuesday allowed them to maintain that lead. The Rays continue to fall out of contention as they are now 10.5 games back.

Andrew Miller had some serious control issues in his last start and even then he was able to pick up the win. He wouldn’t be so lucky last night.

Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Andrew Miller(notes), right, reacts after giving up a solo home run to Kansas City Royals designated hitter Billy Butler(notes) (16) who rounds third base, left rear, during the fourth inning of a baseball game, Tuesday, July 26, 2011, at Fenway Park in Boston. While his fastball had good velocity on it topping out at 95 MPH, he had trouble finding Jason Varitek‘s glove with it. When you get behind to most of the hitters you are facing like Miller did last night, there’s going to be trouble. And when you throw only nine of 22 first pitch strikes, it could turn out to be a long night.

And even with the offense helping Miller out last night, he still didn’t get out of the 4th inning. He ended up going 3.2 innings, allowing seven runs (five earned) on nine hits and two walks. Thankfully for Miller, Alfredo Aceves and the offense saved his butt.

Like he’s been all season long, Aceves just continues to get the job done. Just two days after throwing 46 pitches, he was back out there doing his thing. He gave the Red Sox 3.1 innings of scoreless baseball allowing just three hits while striking out three.

You know that Aceves pitching well just has to irk the Yankees right now. After all they gave up on him because they thought he wouldn’t be healthy or stay healthy this year.

Besides Aceves, when you take a look at what the Red Sox 3-4-5 hitters did last night, you’ll understand why they battled back and won.

The combination of Adrian Gonzalez, Dustin Pedroia and David Ortiz went 10-for-13 with 8 RBIs. .

Gonzo was 2-for-3 with two RBIs while Pedroia was a home run short of the cycle with four hits and a RBI. Papi had a career-high three doubles as part of his four hit effort while knocking in five runs.

When you’re getting production like that from the middle of your lineup, you’re definitely not going to lose too many ball games.

I’m not sure how many more chances Miller is going to have to get his act together. And with Clay Buchholz seemingly on his way back soon, it might not be too long. With the way he’s pitching right now, his stuff is better suited for the bullpen. While the offense really is that good, it may not be able to bail him out every time.
