Afternoon Red Sox Delight – 8/5

Bartolo Colon (L), Jon Lester (R)

After 11 straight games against the AL Central, the Boston Red Sox return to their roots in the AL East with first place line. They’ll host the New York Yankees in the first game of a three-game set tonight at Historic Fenway Park.

Today’s first pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. and the game will be broadcast in the Red Sox television market on NESN. If you live in the Yankees television market, you can watch the game on YES. If you don’t live in either market, you may be in luck as the MLB Network is scheduled to have coverage of the game tonight. And if you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to the game on the 2011 Red Sox Radio Network.

Jon Lester looks to help the Red Sox back into sole possession of first place in the AL East in his 21st start of 2011. In his previous 20 starts, Lester is 11-4 with a 3.17 ERA. He has made two starts against the Yankees this season and is 2-0 with a 5.25 ERA (7 ER/12 IP). He’s made 14 career starts against the Evil Empire and is 8-1 with a 3.56 ERA. He is undefeated (2-0, 5.34 ERA) against the Yankees in five starts at the Fens.

One time member of the Red Sox, Bartolo Colon, makes his 17th start (20th appearance) of 2011. In his previous 19 appearances (16 starts), Colon is 8-6 with a 3.30 ERA. He’s made two appearances (one start) against the Red Sox in 2011 and is 0-2 with a 2.61 ERA. He’s made 24 career appearances (23 starts) against the Red Sox and is 8-11 with a 4.03 ERA. 15 of those appearances (14 starts) have come at the Fens where he is 6-6 with 4.03 ERA.

Red Sox News & Notes – 8/5

Cleveland Indians starting pitcher Justin Masterson(notes) delivers to the Boston Red Sox during the first inning of a baseball game at Fenway Park in Boston on Thursday, Aug. 4, 2011.

If you go to Fenway Park and see a “Wanted” poster with my face on it, it definitely wouldn’t surprise me in the least. I’ve now been to Fenway Park three times this season and have now seen three losses by the Boston Red Sox.

Last night, it was Justin Masterson‘s turn to add to my misery at the Fens as he struck out nine batters on his way to helping the Cleveland Indians to a 7-3 win over the Red Sox. It turned out to be a costly loss for the Red Sox as they fell into a tie for first place in the AL East with the New York Yankees after the beat the Chicago White Sox last night.

So when the Yankees and Red Sox do battle tonight in the first game of a three-game set tonight in Beantown, one of the two teams will be in second place. Let’s hope it’s the team from the Bronx.

When you make a trade, you usually have to give up something good to get something good in return. The Red Sox knew what they had in Masterson but also knew that Victor Martinez would help them out. And know Masterson is quickly becoming a thorn in the Red Sox’s side.

Entering last night’s game, he was 2-0 against them with a 1.25 ERA (3 ER/21.2 IP) in three starts. While the Red Sox were able to get to him for three runs (the same total he had given up in his three previous starts), he exacted his revenge with nine strikeouts. Three of those strikeouts were of Jason Varitek. The only Red Sox hitters he didn’t strikeout were Carl Crawford and Dustin Pedroia (who did get struck out by Vinne Pestano in the 7th).

It did look the Red Sox would possibly make Masterson’s night a quick one getting two runs in the 1st on an Adrian Gonzalez RBI double and a David Ortiz RBI single. But he settled down after that striking out four in the 2nd inning. Yes you read that correctly. He struck out four in the 2nd inning because Josh Reddick reached on a wild pitch from Masty.

Reddick would end up providing the tying run at the time and eventual last run for the Red Sox when he hit a solo blast in the 5th into the Indians bullpen.

Erik Bedard made his Red Sox debut last night and honestly he wasn’t bad.

He had a rough patch in the 2nd when he gave up two runs that tied the game up at 2. Another rough spot in the 3rd when the Indians got another run. But before that and after that he did pretty well.

If you didn’t have tempered expectations for Bedard’s debut, you really don’t know what’s going. You couldn’t expect him to go out there and throw a complete game or anything like that. After all, it was just his second start since return from the DL.

All you needed him to do was go out there and keep the Red Sox in the game. And that’s exactly what he did.

Baseball is a funny game in quickly how things can turn around for one player.

Franklin Morales went from the hero of Tuesday night’s game out of the bullpen to the goat of Thursday’s game after allowing two runs. And Andrew Miller wasn’t much better as he also allowed two runs in 2.2 innings. The amazing number from Miller’s line though is that he needed 74 pitches to get through those 2.2 innings.

And in case you’re wondering, that’s a lot of pitches.

Big weekend series coming up with the Yanks and as you might expect, there’ll be a lot of national media attention. Along with their respective local networks, the MLB Network will have the game tonight. FOX and ESPN will have Saturday and Sunday’s games.

The Red Sox have taken 8-of-9 so far this year from the Red Sox. Now it’s time to see what they can do in the stretch run with nine more against them.

We’ll be back later with tonight’s lineups, batter/pitcher matchups and links from the day. But for now, enjoy the overnight links from the media by clicking on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

Red Sox News & Notes – 8/4

Jacoby Ellsbury(notes) #2 of the Boston Red Sox watches the flight of a game-winning home run in the ninth inning against the Cleveland Indians at Fenway Park on August 3, 2011 in Boston, Massachusetts.

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before. Jacoby Ellsbury had a walkoff hit for the Boston Red Sox. Oh wait, that’s right. Because of my idiocy and x’ing out yesterday’s morning post after completely doing it and not saving it, I wasn’t able to post it.

Well if you missed his walkoff single on Tuesday night, he one upped himself by hitting a walkoff home run to give the Red Sox a 4-3 win over the Cleveland Indians. It’s just too bad that Tim Wakefield didn’t pitch the top of the 9th because that would have given him his 200th career win.

Wakefield didn’t get the opportunity because he left the game after 6 2/3 innings after giving up the tying run. And that came on one bad pitch to Ezequiel Carerra that he laced for a ground-rule double. That withstanding, he definitely pitched well enough to earn that win.

It was a strange sight to hear booing at Fenway Park for Terry Francona but that’s what he got when he pulled Wake from the game. But as Tito said in his post-game press conference, you have to worry about getting the team win.

“He hadn’t given up a lot of hits and he was getting outs,” he said of Wakefield, who finished his outing having thrown 99 pitches. “If we go to Carrera, then they probably pinch hit [Matt] LaPorta, so I thought Wake deserved the chance to pitch. Once they tied it, they had a lefty that they weren’t going to hit for so we went to the bullpen.”

They were able to get nine hits off of Indians starter Carlos Carrasco and did get to him for three runs. But other than on a David Ortiz single in the 1st that scored two runs, they were never really able to take advantage. They ended up leaving seven men on base and were just 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position.

The only run they mustered in 4th with the bases loaded was when Marco Scutaro beat out a double play with Big Papi scoring.

Like Tuesday night when Franklin Morales was the hero out of the Red Sox bullpen, this time around it was Randy Williams. He came and got out of Wake’s jam in the 7th and then took care of business in the 8th despite a walk. He gave way to Jonathan Papelbon who was outstanding for the second night in a row and picked up his fourth win of the season and second in as many nights after Ellsbury’s heroics.

Don’t get me wrong, the Indians are a pretty good team. They aren’t the same exact team that beat up on the Red Sox earlier in the season. Nonetheless, they’ve been giving the Red Sox fits during this four-game set. But a win tonight will even up the season series at five games and would also make sure the Red Sox are in first place when the second place New York Yankees come to town on Friday.

I am heading off to Fenway for tonight’s game but I’ll have an abbreviated lineup post put up around 4 p.m.  But for now, enjoy the overnight links from the media by clicking on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

Dustin Pedroia Named AL Player of the Month For July

Here’s the release from the Boston Red Sox about Dustin Pedroia being named the AL Player of the Month for July:

Second baseman Dustin Pedroia of the Boston Red Sox has been voted the Budweiser Presents American League Player of the Month for July. Budweiser, the official beer sponsor of Major League Baseball and sponsor of 24 of 30 clubs, is also the presenting sponsor of the National League and American League Player of the Month Awards. The announcement was made earlier today on MLB Network.

Boston Red SoxPedroia batted .411 (46-for-112) with nine doubles, one triple, eight home runs, 22 RBI and 27 runs scored in 26 games during July to win his first career monthly award and the second straight for the Red Sox after Adrian Gonzalez took home honors in June. Among Major League leaders (minimum 84 plate appearances), the three-time All-Star finished first in batting average, hits, slugging percentage (.723) and total bases (81), was tied for first in runs scored and extra base hits (18), was second in on-base percentage (.465), was tied for second in home runs and was tied for sixth in RBI.

To continue reading, click on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

Pedroia’s 46 hits were the most for a Red Sox player in the month of July since 1939 when Hall of Famers Bobby Doerr (52), Ted Williams (48) and Jimmy Foxx (47) each collected more (Elias Sports Bureau). In addition, his eight homers last month were the most by a Red Sox second baseman in July since Felix Mantilla had 10 round trippers in 1964. Overall, the Arizona State University product has 15 home runs on the season, just two shy of his career-best mark of 17 set in 2008 when he was the A.L. Most Valuable Player, an All-Star and a Louisville Slugger Silver Slugger Award winner. In a July 8th matchup against Baltimore, the 27-year-old launched a solo home run and scored three runs as the Red Sox topped the O’s, 10-3. It was the first of four straight multirun games for Dustin, tying a career-best mark previously set during his Rookie of the Year campaign in 2007. Two days later, the California native helped the Sox complete a four-game sweep of the Orioles with a double, a homer and three runs scored as Boston edged Baltimore, 8-6. The triumph secured the Red Sox first place in the A.L. East heading into the All-Star break for the sixth time in seven seasons.

On July 26th, Pedroia collected a season-high four hits, including a double, a triple, one RBI and three runs scored as Boston outlasted the Kansas City Royals, 13-9, at Fenway Park. Pedroia, a second round pick in the 2004 First-Year Player Draft, enjoyed an A.L.-best and career-long 25- game hitting streak from June 29th-July 28th, batting .404 (44-for-109) with nine doubles, a triple, nine homers and 20 RBI over the stretch. It was the longest run by a second baseman in franchise history, surpassing Del Pratt’s 23-gamer in 1922.

Among others receiving votes was Pedroia’s teammate Jacoby Ellsbury (.382, 8 HR, 22 RBI); Texas Rangers infielder Michael Young (.390, 11 2B, 20 R, 20 RBI); Minnesota’s Michael Cuddyer (.336, 6 HR, 25 RBI, .545 SLG); and Oakland Athletics designated hitter Hideki Matsui (.369, 3 HR, 22 RBI, .449 SLG).

The Budweiser Presents American League Player of the Month, Dustin Pedroia, will receive a specially designed trophy, suitably engraved, for his accomplishment.

Afternoon Red Sox Delight – 8/3

Carlos Carrasco (L), Tim Wakefield (R)

After a walkoff win last night, the Boston Red Sox try to do it again the more conventional way in game three of a four-game set with the Cleveland Indians tonight at Historic Fenway Park.

Today’s first pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. and the game will be broadcast in the Red Sox television market on NESN. If you live in the Indians television market, you can watch the game on SportsTime Ohio (STO). And if you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to the game on the 2011 Red Sox Radio Network.

Tim Wakefield looks to give himself a nice day late 45th birthday present as he goes for his 200th career win in his 15th start (24th appearance) in 2011. In his previous 23 appearances (14 starts), Wake is 6-4 with a 5.06 ERA. He’s made one appearance this year against the Tribe and that came out of the bullpen back on April 6th. In that relief effort, he allowed one run in two innings of work. He’s made 30 career appearances (23 starts) against the Indians and is 12-8 with a 4.05 ERA. 15 of those appearances (10 starts) have come at the Fens where he is 6-4 with a 4.26 ERA.

Carlos Carrasco will make his final start before dropping an appeal of a six-game suspension he received from his last outing. He’s made 21 starts in 2011 and is 8-9 with a 4.67 ERA. He has not faced the Red Sox this season. As a matter of fact, he’s only made one career start against the Red Sox back on October 1, 2009 at Fenway Park. In that start, he took the loss after allowing three runs on nine hits in 3.1 innings. He left that start after being hit in the forearm by a Jacoby Ellsbury line drive.
