Patriots Trade Vrabel To Chiefs

(Photo by Jim Rogash/Getty Images)Well it didn’t take too long for new Kansas City Chiefs GM Scott Pioli to dig into the New England Patriots well.

The Chiefs acquired linebacker Mike Vrabel from the Patriots for an undisclosed draft choice. Vrabel, who began his career in Pittsburgh, has been a member of the Patriots since the 2001 season.

It will be hard for the Patriots to replace the leadership that Vrabel brought to the table but he will bring a good work ethic to Chiefs.

In 8 years with the Patriots, Vrabel played 125 games with 638 tackles and 11 interceptions. He had one interception return for a touchdown and also had 8 touchdowns for the Patriots on offense.

Celtics Sign Starbury; Pruitt Suspended 2 Games

Stephon Marbury & Gabe Pruitt: The Boston Celtics have signed Stephon Marbury to a 1-year contract that is a pro-rated share of the veteran’s minimum of $1.3 million. “We are very excited to have a player of Stephon’s caliber joining our team,” Celtics general manager Danny Ainge said in a statment. “Our entire organization is confident in the belief that Stephon can play an important role in helping us to win another championship.” [ESPN.com] Jessica Camerato of WEEI.com is reporting that the Celtics have suspended Gabe Pruitt for 2 games for conduct detrimental to the team. Pruitt was arrested on suspicion of DUI in Los Angeles after the Celtics loss to the Clippers. [WEEI.com]

When Will This Calhoun Nonsense End?

Jeff Hathaway and Jim Calhoun - AP PhotoSince last Saturday’s incident with a “local reporter”, we’ve seen UConn Huskies head coach Jim Calhoun be chastised about his actions and words.

We’ve had the governor of Connecticut say it was an “embarrassing display” and just yesterday we had two legislators here in this great state (sarcasm) want Calhoun to be reprimanded. With the economic climate the state faces, I can understand their disdain for the situation.

But they need to be realistic. Calhoun was ambushed by this “local reporter”. The question about the salary while it was a fair enough question to be asked, asking the question in a postgame press conference after a game where his team didn’t play it’s best is not the best place to do it.

What the “local reporter” could have done was just get Calhoun in a little more intimate environment to ask the question. The “local reporter” has even admitted to ambushing Calhoun during the press conference (I refuse to mention his name or link to where I saw that). So what does that tell you. This crackpot just wanted the attention and now he’s gotten it.

Hopefully this is end of it all. The poor guy gets the 800th win of his career on Wednesday night and here we are talking about some stupid incident rather than what a great coach he is and what 800 wins means.

But  since it hasn’t died down, we now have some statements from the UConn president Michael Hogan, UConn AD Jeff Hathaway and Calhoun that can be found after the jump.

Thabeet A Finalist For Oscar Robertson Trophy

Oscar Robertson Trophy LogoThe United States Basketball Writers Association of America (USBWA) has announced the 15 finalists for the Oscar Robertson Trophy and UConn Huskies junior center Hasheem Thabeet is among the finalists.

The Oscar Robertson Trophy is awarded to the USBWA’s Player of the Year. It is the nation’s oldest award and the only one named after a former player. The legendary Oscar Robertson was the USBWA’s first player of the year in 1959. The USBWA renamed its player of the year award the Oscar Robertson Trophy in 1998.

North Carolina senior Tyler Hansbrough won the award last year and is looking to repeat, something that hasn’t been since 1981-1983 when Ralph Sampson won it 3 straight times.

The award will be handed out on April 3rd at the USBWA’s annual awards breakfast at the downtown Detroit Athletic Club in conjunction with the Men’s Final Four.

Two CT State Reps Want Calhoun Reprimanded

Jim CalhounWe are facing a $944 million deficit here in the state of Connecticut so shouldn’t the lawmakers have better things to do than worry about what happened with UConn Huskies men’s basketball coach Jim Calhoun last Saturday.

Sen. Mary Ann Handley, D-Manchester, and Rep. Roberta Willis, D-Lakeville, say Calhoun’s outburst Saturday does not reflect well on him or the state’s flagship university.

In a letter sent Thursday to UConn President Michael J. Hogan, the lawmakers say the Hall of Fame coach should be reminded that he is a role model for many athletes and students.

Seriously, these lawmakers need to worry about how to make things better for the residents of Connecticut rather than have Calhoun reprimanded.
