Pavano Shuts Down The Red Sox In 9-2 Indians Win

Carl Pavano probably never wanted to pitch at Fenway Park ever again because of his career numbers there.

But tonight he looked pretty good as he went 6 strong innings, allowing just 2 runs and he got 4 RBIs from Victor Martinez as the Cleveland Indians went on to beat the Boston Red Sox 9-2 in front of 37,888 at the Fens.

The loss for the Red Sox ended a 9-game home winning streak as they fall to 17-11. The Indians improve to 11-17 on the season.

(AP Photo/Michael Dwyer)Justin Masterson had been perfect at Fenway Park (7-0) in his career but tonight just wasn’t his night. Once he got through the Indians order a few times, they started to figure him out and that was the difference. He went 6 1/3 innings, allowing 6 runs on 8 hits and 3 walks while striking out 6.

Hunter Jones worked 1 2/3 innings allowing a run on a hit and 2 walks with a strikeout. The deadweight in the Red Sox bullpen, Javier Lopez, went the final inning, allowing 2 runs on 4 hits and should be seeing the door from the Red Sox real soon.

In the 6 innings Pavano pitched, he allowed just the 2 runs on 6 hits and 3 walks while striking out 4. Aaron Laffey went the final three innings, giving up 2 hits and added a strikeout to pick up his first career save.

Jonathan Van Every, filling in for the hobbled Jacoby Ellsbury, led the Red Sox with 2 hits and the only RBI while Jason Varitek had two hits as well.  J.D. Drew, David Ortiz, Mike Lowell and Julio Lugo had the other hits.

Pavano walked Jason Bay to start the 2nd inning  and he went to third on a Mike Lowell double. A walk to Varitek loaded up the bases for Jeff Bailey. He ended up grounding into a double play that scored Bay to put the Red Sox up 1-0. Van Every followed with a single to score Lowell and make it 2-0 Red Sox.

The Indians got a run back in the 3rd.

RemDawg Out Indefinitely As He Recovers From Cancer Surgery

Jerry Remy - NESN.com imageWe’ve all been wondering and speculating as to what’s been wrong with NESN announcer Jerry Remy and now we know. He had cancer surgery during the offseason.

“I want to focus on completing my recovery so that I can return to work without distractions or interruptions.”

“I hope that disclosing my bout with cancer will reinforce the dangers of smoking to every member of Red Sox Nation, especially children.”

Dennis Eckersley will finish out the homestand in the booth for RemDawg and then Dave Roberts will join Don Orsillo in the NESN booth during the upcoming west coast road trip. It’s not known who’ll take over when they return from the trip.

We’ll miss you RemDawg but we understand. Best wishes for a speedy and healthy recovery.

Here is a full statement from Jerry Remy on his battle with cancer and recovery.

After starting a 9-game road trip in Cleveland that ended with a 2-game sweep of the New York Yankees, the Boston Red Sox return home to take on the Cleveland Indians in a brief 2-game set during a 5-game homestand.

Tonight’s game will start at 7:10 and will be broadcast on NESN Plus in Red Sox television market due to the Boston Bruins playing tonight in the NHL Playoffs. In the Cleveland area, you can catch the game on STO. And if the television isn’t your cup of tea, you can catch the game on one of the many affiliates of the Red Sox Radio Network.

In what could be his final start before Daisuke Matsuzaka returns, Justin Masterson looks to bounce back from a rough outing against the Tampa Bay Rays that saw him give up 6 runs in 6 innings of work. On the season, Masterson is 2-1 with a 4.37 ERA in 7 games (3 starts). Masterson has faced the Indians three times in his career, all out of the bullpen, and has no record with a 0.00 ERA. By the way, Masterson is perfect at Fenway Park with a 7-0 record.

Eric Wedge calls upon oft-injured pitcher Carl Pavano to start tonight. In 5 starts for the Tribe this season, Pavano is 1-3 with a 7.46 ERA. His last start against the Red Sox came as a member of the Yankees in 2005, a start that saw him give up 5 runs in 3 2/3 innings. In 5 career starts against Boston, he is 1-3 with an 8.18 ERA. And in two starts at Fenway Park, he is 0-2 with a 24.75 ERA.

Tyrone McKenzie - AP photo

During a drill during the New England Patriots rookie mini-camp last weekend, third-round draft pick linebacker Tyrone McKenzie suffered a knee injury in a one-on-one coverage drill.

Now according to Christopher Gasper of the Boston Globe, McKenzie will be out for the season after suffering a torn ACL.

Patriots rookie linebacker Tyrone McKenzie, who was injured during the team’s rookie mini-camp last weekend, is out for the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, according to a source close to the rookie.

And in some other Patriots news I missed, they announced they had signed 8 free agents earlier in the week and yesterday announced they had signed free agent safety Brandon McGowan and waived punter Tom Malone.

And in the day late, dollar short news, here’s a link to the what games the Patriots will wear their throwback jerseys this season.

University of Connecticut Huskies head coach Geno Auriemma celebrates with the net after his team defeated the University of Louisville Cardinals during their NCAA women's Final Four championship basketball game in St. Louis, Missouri, April 7, 2009. REUTSTORRS, Conn. – University of Connecticut head coach Geno Auriemma will receive the Winged Foot Award for the fifth time in his career on Thursday, May 7 at the New York Athletic Club.

For his career, Auriemma has coached three undefeated teams (1995, 2002, 2009), won six national championships, garnered a total of 24 National Coach of the Year honors and was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the Women’s College Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006. Boston Red Sox News & Notes – 5/6

NY & Boston Media sports page covers for 5/6/09

Last night at the new Yankee Stadium, the Boston Red Sox continued their 2009 dominance of the New York Yankees with a 7-3 win to run their record to 5-0 against them this season.

Jason Bay once again proved to be a Yankee killer as his 3-run blast in the 1st inning off of Joba Chamberlain was huge. Especially given the fact that Chamberlain settled down after that inning and was pretty much untouchable.

Bay has given Red Sox Nation every chance to fall in love with him and as he continues to put numbers, not just against the Yanks, that love grows stronger. With Bay in a contract year and the Red Sox and Bay halting contract negotiations due to the poor economy, his price keeps going up and you have to wonder if the Red Sox will be able to sign him.

As reader fc put it, she’s not worried and neither am I. If he really wants to be here for the future, Theo Epstein and Bay will find a way to make it work. Many were worried that because he played with the Pittsburgh Pirates, he might not be able to handle the pressures of playing in Boston unlike some other people.

Well he’s done that and more and now it’s time for Theo and the Red Sox to show that love back to him with a contract to keep in a Red Sox uniform for years to come.

There’s a reason why the Red Sox are 5-0 against the Yankees and 2-5 against the Tampa Bay Rays. The Rays pitching is much better than the Yankees. The Yanks spent a ton of money on their starting pitching and yet haven’t seen the results of that yet.

The one thing the Yankees didn’t do was address their bullpen and that’s the difference right now between the three teams.
