Bay’s Big Bomb Helps Red Sox To 7-3 Win Over Yanks

A big 1st inning for the Boston Red Sox, culminated by Jason Bay’s three-run home run helped them to a 7-3 win over the New York Yankees in front of 46,810 rain-soaked fans, most of whom had left by the 6th inning, at the new Yankee Stadium.

The win for the Red Sox makes them 5-o on the season against the Yankees and improves their record to 17-10. The Yanks fall back to .500 on the season at 13-13.

The Red Sox won 7-3. (AP Photo/Julie Jacobson)Josh Beckett (3-2, 6.75) got the ball for the Red Sox tonight and looked good for the most part. He made one mistake pitch to Johnny Damon and the other time he got in trouble he worked around it. He went 6 innings and gave up 3 runs on 10 hits and a walk while striking out 5.

I sound like a broken record saying this but the Red Sox bullpen was outstanding tonight. Hideki Okajima worked two perfect innings striking out 2 and Takashi Saito finished it off with a perfect 9th inning, including a strikeout of his own.

After the 1st inning tonight, Joba Chamberlain (1-1, 3.75) had a great outing for the Yankees and showed pinpoint control at that point except when he hit Bay in the back in the 5th inning. Chamberlain went 5 2/3 innings, allowing 4 runs on 6 hits and 2 walks while striking out 12. Six Yankees relievers finished it off by allowing 3 runs (1 earned) on 3 hits and 4 walks while recording two strikeouts.

Bay continues to kill the Yankees as his one hit tonight was the 3-run homer in the 1st and also added a stolen base. Dustin Pedroia led the way with 3 hits and David Ortiz had another hit and an RBI. Mike Lowell, Nick Green and Jacoby Ellsbury had the other hits for the Sox with Jeff Bailey (bases loaded walk), Varitek and Green adding the other RBIs.

Ellsbury did leave the game with tightness in his hamstring in the 4th inning after stealing second and then an almost diving catch in center. He was replaced by Jonathan Van Every.

The Red Sox wasted no time getting on the new scoreboard at the new Yankee Stadium in the 1st inning. Ellsbury led off with a single and stole second with Pedroia at the plate. Pedroia ended up with a single as Ellsbury had to stop at third. Ortiz brought him home with a single.

Chamberlain then left a fastball out over the plate that Bay put into the left field seats to put the Red Sox up 4-0 without making an out. Lowell made it 5 straight hits for the Red Sox before Chamberlain got J.D. Drew to fly out to right. Chamberlain escaped the inning when Bailey grounded into an inning-ending 1-4-3 double play.

Beckett’s bad inning tonight came in the 3rd inning.

Afternoon Red Sox Delight – 5/5

BOSTON - APRIL 25: Josh Beckett #19 of the Boston Red Sox throws against the New York Yankees at Fenway Park, April 25, 2009, in Boston, Massachusetts. (Photo by Jim Rogash/Getty Images)

Last night at the new Yankee Stadium, the Boston Red Sox beat the New York Yankees for the 4th straight time. Tonight, the visiting nine from Boston looks to make it five straight.

Tonight’s game is scheduled to start at 7:05 PM and you can catch the game on NESN in the Red Sox television market or on YES in the Yankees television market. And if the television isn’t your cup of tea, you can catch the game on one of the many affiliates of the Red Sox Radio Network.

Josh Beckett gets the ball for Terry Francona tonight and had a rough outing against the Yanks his last time out. He gave up 8 runs on 10 hits and 4 walks over 5.0 innings but did not earn a decision in Boston’s 16-11 win over New York at Fenway Park. He is 2-2 with a 7.22 ERA in 5 starts this season and is 7-4 with a 5.90 in 13 lifetime starts against the Yanks. At the old Yankee Stadium, Beckett was 4-2 with a 5.66 ERA in 6 starts.

Joba Chamberlain will look to get Joe Girardi and the Yankees a win tonight. Last time out, Chamberlain limited Boston to 1 earned run in 5 1/3 innings despite allowing a career-high 9 hits and didn’t factor in decision as the Red Sox won 5-4 on a Kevin Youkilis walk-off homer in the 11th. In 3 career starts against the Red Sox, Chamberlain is 1-0 with a 1.96 ERA.

Boston Red Sox News & Notes – Cinco de Mayo Edition

New York media covers for 5/5/09

After waiting out a lengthy rain delay last night at the new Yankee Stadium, the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees proceeded to take part in a typical Sox/Yanks 3 hour and 48 minutes affair that saw the Red Sox come away 6-4 winners.

Jon Lester started for the visiting nine last night and showed the form from last season that got him a new contract. His stuff was overpowering last night and he was keeping the Yanks hitters on the their toes and even had them guessing at pitches.

Things took a change for Lester though when he threw a potential double play ball low to Nick Green at second. Dennis Eckersley said in NESN booth that pay attention to that because it could cost him later on.

Well it did because after a strikeout of Derek Jeter and ejection of Joe Girardi, he left a pitch out over the plate that Johnny Damon smacked out of the park for a 2-run homer. Mark Teixeira followed with a solo shot on the next pitch to get the Yankees even closer at 4-3.

Not to worry though as new Yankee killer Jason Bay struck with a 2-run homer to put the Sox in front for good. Despite a few bumps, Ramon Ramirez and Jonathan Papelbon finished it off to make the Red Sox 4-0 against the Yankees this season.
