Red Sox Get Conor Jackson From A’s

Conor Jackson #28 of the Oakland Athletics looks on after David DeJesus grounded into a double play with the bases loaded in the sixth inning against the Minnesota Twins at O.co Coliseum on July 29, 2011 in Oakland, California.

With the waiver trade deadline looming at midnight on Wednesday, it was thought the Boston Red Sox would stand pat with their roster besides the additions of Trevor Miller and Joey Gathright, who were both assigned to Triple-A Pawtucket.

But it appears that is not the case as the various Boston media entities are reporting that the Red Sox beat the deadline and acquired Conor Jackson from the Oakland Athletics. If the name sounds familiar, it’s because he was in town with the A’s over the Hurricane Irene weekend.

The Red Sox sent minor league pitcher Jason Rice to complete the deal. To make room on the 40-man roster for Jackson, the Red Sox have placed Bobby Jenks on the 60-day disabled list.

In 102 games with the A’s, Jackson was hitting just .249 with 4 home runs and 39 RBIs. He’ll give the Red Sox some added versatility at the corner spots in the outfield. While he’s made 50 appearances at first base, he has played 46 games in the outfield, 28 in right, 20 in left. He’s also played three games at third base.

Given that J.D. Drew sprained a finger during his rehab outing with the Pawtucket Red Sox, the addition of Jackson gives the Red Sox some insurance in case Drew isn’t back right away.

In six career games at the Fens, the righty has hit .167 with no home runs, two RBIs and two stolen bases.

With rosters expanding today, it’s expected he’ll be with the club tonight when they wrap up the three-game set with the New York Yankees.

Jim Calhoun WILL Coach UConn in 2011-12

UConn coach Jim Calhoun looks out at the fans at the rally for the returning basketball team at Gampel Pavilion .

As if there was any doubt that this would happen, especially with the additions of DeAndre Daniels and Andre Drummond, UConn Huskies men’s basketball coach Jim Calhoun will be back on the bench for the upcoming season.

Here’s what UConn president Susan Herbst told the Hartford Courant’s Jeff Jacobs:

“He told today he is staying,” UConn President Susan Herbst said. “Obviously, we’re thrilled about it.”

Honestly, can you blame him at all. You’ve got those two guys coming plus Ryan Boathright and most of the cast of characters coming back. One thing Calhoun will have to work on right away though is the fact the Drummond needs a scholarship.

Since he was recruited, he needs to be on scholarship to play this season. The rumors are that Michael Bradley will give up his scholarship and apply for financial aid for the school year but nothing has been confirmed as of yet.

Also, as part of the NCAA sanctions last year, Calhoun will have to sit out the first three Big East games. And with the release of the 2011-12 UConn men’s basketball schedule today, we know now that those games will be against South Florida (road), St. John’s (home) and Rutgers (road).

Red Sox Announce 2012 Spring Training Ticket Prices

Here’s the release from the Boston Red Sox announcing ticket prices Spring Training 2012 at their new home, JetBlue Park, Ft. Myers, FL:

BOSTON – The Boston Red Sox today announced the 2012 Spring Training ticket price schedule for seats available to the general public. 2012 marks the opening of JetBlue Park, the ballpark that sits within Fenway South, the team’s new 106-acre Spring Training and Player Development Complex in Lee County, Florida. JetBlue Park will have a capacity of approximately 11,000 (including Standing Room and Reserved Lawn), a more than 20 percent increase in capacity from City of Palms Park.

Boston Red SoxTicket prices at JetBlue Park will range from $5 to $46 for the 2012 season. The Homeplate Dugout Box, at $46, remains the same as the 2011 price in the similar seating category behind home plate at City of Palms Park. The Reserved Lawn Area, at $5, is located above the bullpens in right-center field and occupies a larger area than the smaller sloped grass berm area at City of Palms. While most Major League clubs have yet to announce their 2012 Spring Training ticket prices, when compared with 2011 pricing, the $5 Reserved Lawn tickets are currently the lowest priced Spring Training ticket in Major League Baseball.

More than 75 percent of tickets available at JetBlue Park are $27 or less, and, like City of Palms Park, the majority of seats in the park will be in the shade.

To continue reading, click on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

The seating bowl at JetBlue Park features identical geometry and playing field dimensions as Fenway Park, providing fans with a similar sense of intimacy as “America’s Most Beloved Ballpark.” Some seats down the left and right field foul lines are positioned immediately adjacent to the playing field and new specialty seating, such as the Right Field Picnic area ($10), give fans the opportunity to experience the game at ground level near the right field foul pole located 302 feet from home plate like the “Pesky Pole” at Fenway Park. In addition to Box and Grandstand seats in the main seating bowl, another new seating area is the Left Field Deck Seats which will feature barstool seating with drink rails ($15) and standing room positions ($10) located above the Left Field Grandstand.

A signature element of the new ballpark is a replica of the Fenway Park Green Monster, which includes three new seating categories on two different levels – Green Monster Standing Room, Green Monster Deck Seats and Green Monster Seats, located behind the 37 foot tall wall. Tickets for these categories are $15, $25 and $35, respectively. Additionally, the Green Monster Wall at JetBlue Park will feature a restored version of the actual manual scoreboard that served Red Sox fans for almost three decades at Fenway Park in Boston starting in the 1970s.

“We are proud and excited to open JetBlue Park at Fenway South for the 2012 spring training season, and once again we thank the citizens of Lee County and their elected officials for their vision and support in making this exceptional new facility a reality,” said Red Sox Executive Vice President/Business Affairs Jonathan Gilula. “JetBlue Park gives us the opportunity to make our Spring Training facility feel a little more like home, all while paying homage to the original Fenway Park, which has special significance as we celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2012. We look forward to celebrating both the old and the new with our fans next year.”

JetBlue Park sits within Fenway South, the Red Sox new Spring Training and Player Development Complex, which will provide a single, state-of-the-art, year-round site where both Major and Minor League teams can train together. The new ballpark includes improved features and amenities such as new food options, an HD video board as well as interactive family areas. The Yawkey Way experience at Fenway Park will be recreated on the road positioned immediately south of JetBlue Park during Spring Training and will add to the ballpark’s concourse with a street festival feel including entertainment, concessions and other activities.

Those interested in seeing the new Spring Training home of the Boston Red Sox take shape can visit redsox.com/jetbluepark periodically to see the latest time lapse video of the construction as well as still photos including aerial views of the ballpark. Also included on the site is video from the ground breaking ceremony featuring speeches from Lee County officials as well as members of the Red Sox front office.

UConn will once again have a persistent presence on national television as nine contests will be nationally televised. Seven games will be carried on the ESPN family of networks, one game will be on CBS and one will be televised by CBS Sports Network.

Connecticut’s first exhibition showdown will be against Assumption on Thursday, November 3. The Greyhounds finished the 2010-11 season with a 22-8 overall record and advanced to the Regional Semifinal of the NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Championship.

The Huskies will round out the exhibition portion of the schedule with a game against Pace on Wednesday, November 9. Pace rounded out 2010-11 with a 24-9 record and advanced to the Regional Semifinal of the NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Championship.

UConn will open the 2011-12 season on Sunday, November 13 against Holy Cross. The Crusaders were 10-20 last season and dropped a 117-37 decision to the Huskies in the 2010-11 season opener. Connecticut is 19-2 all-time against Holy Cross, including 13-0 at home. UConn has not lost to HC since the 1986-87 season.

To continue reading, click on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

Connecticut will then welcome Pacific to the Nutmeg State on Tuesday, November 15. The Tigers finished 9-22 last season and were the final victory of Connecticut’s record-breaking 90-game winning streak as the Huskies downed Pacific by an 85-42 margin on December 28, 2010. That game marked the only other contest between the two squads.

The team that snapped the streak, Stanford, is next on the docket for UConn as the Huskies will take on the Cardinal on Monday, November 21 on ESPNU. Connecticut dropped a 71-57 decision to Stanford on December 30, 2010 in Palo Alto. Prior to that loss, UConn had defeated Stanford three-straight times.

The Huskies will remain at home to play host to the 2011 World Vision Classic from Friday, November 25 – Sunday, November 27 at Gampel Pavilion. Connecticut will welcome Buffalo, Dayton and Fairleigh Dickinson to Storrs for the event and will play the second of the two games each day. UConn will play FDU on Friday at 7:30, Buffalo on Saturday at 7:30 and Dayton on Sunday at 4:30. FDU was 14-16 overall and 7-11 in the Northeast Conference last season while Buffalo was 16-15, 8-8 in the MAC. Dayton had a solid season in 2010-11, posting a 21-11 overall record, including a 9-5 mark in the Atlantic 10 and advanced to the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Next up for the Huskies is a home game against Towson on Wednesday, November 30. Towson sported a 9-21 record last year and posted a 3-15 mark in the CAA. The Huskies eighth-straight home game will come on Tuesday, December 6 against defending national champion Texas A&M in the Jimmy V Classic, which will be hosted by UConn and televised by ESPN2. The game will mark the first matchup between the Huskies and Aggies. A&M finished the season with a 33-5 overall record, tied for second in the BIG 12 with a 13-3 mark and finished No. 6 in the RPI.

Connecticut will then hit the road for the first time to face a tough test at Baylor on Sunday, December 18 in Waco, Texas. The Baylor game will be televised on ESPN. Baylor won the Big 12 with a 15-1 record and advanced to the regional final of the NCAA Tournament on the strength of a 35-3 overall record. The Lady Bears lost to the Huskies by a 65-64 margin at the XL Center on November 16 of last season in a game that pitted the nation’s two top-ranked teams and saw the Huskies improve to 2-0 all-time against Baylor.

From Waco, UConn will travel to Charleston, S.C. to take on the College of Charleston on Wednesday, December 21. C of C was 9-19 overall last season and registered a 7-13 mark in the Southern Conference.

Following the Christmas break, the Huskies will return home to take on Fairfield. That contest is scheduled for Thursday, December 29 but may be moved to Wednesday, December 28 as that is the first week of the BIG EAST men’s basketball schedule and the league reserves the right to schedule the UConn men to play on December 29. Fairfield put together a 17-13 record last season and went 10-8 in the MAAC.

Connecticut will play its final non-conference home game on Monday, January 16 when the team squares-off against North Carolina on ESPN2. The Tar Heels finished 26-8 in 2010-11 and were 8-6 in the ACC. The Heels are one of six non-conference opponents that advanced to the 2011 NCAA Regional semifinal. UConn is 6-5 all-time against UNC and has won four-straight meetings.

The Huskies will take on another ACC opponent when the team travels to Durham, N.C. for a showdown with Duke on Monday, January 30 on ESPN2. The Blue Devils were the RPI’s second-ranked team last year following a 29-3 overall record. Duke posted a 12-2 ACC record, tied Miami for the regular-season championship and won the conference tournament. Duke’s season ended with a 75-40 defeat to UConn in the Philadelphia Regional Final on March 29, 2011. The Huskies are 7-3 all-time against Duke and have won four-straight vs. the Blue Devils by an average of 32.5 points per game.

UConn’s final non-conference game will be a February 13 tilt at Oklahoma. The Sooners were 21-11 last season and finished in a tie for third with a 10-6 record in Big 12 action. A Sweet 16 team last season, OU is 0-9 all-time against the Huskies. The OU game will be televised on ESPN2.

The Huskies will play their first road game of the 2011-12 season on Friday, December 9 at Seton Hall. The contest will also be UConn’s BIG EAST Conference opener. In addition to the Pirates, Connecticut is scheduled to play Notre Dame, Villanova, DePaul, Syracuse, Louisville, Pittsburgh and Marquette on the road. The Huskies will square-off against West Virginia, Providence, Cincinnati, South Florida, Rutgers, Georgetown, St. John’s and Notre Dame at home.

Red Sox News & Notes – 8/31

New York Post and NY Daily News sports covers for August 31,2011

Before we get going here, this is something I should have done in yesterday’s post.

The WEEI/NESN Jimmy Fund Radio-Telethon kicked off yesterday and they are accepting donations now. If you have a few dollars laying around, please be sure to donate. They do great things and every dollar counts in the fight to K cancer. You can donate by calling 877-738-1234 or donating through the WEEI/NESN Jimmy Fund Radio-Telethon.

Now on to the game.

When you leave a small village on the basepaths like the Boston Red Sox did on Tuesday night against the New York Yankees, you can’t expect to win the game. They would end up leaving 16 runners on base in the 5-2 loss.

With the win, the Yankees move to within a ½ game of the Red Sox in the AL East standings. The Yankees lead in the wild card over the Tampa Bay Rays stands at 8.5 games.

CC Sabathia had sucked against the Red Sox this season. In his previous four starts against them, he was 0-4 with a 7.20 ERA. And despite throwing a season-high 128 pitches and second highest of his career, he was still good enough to pick up his 18th win of the season.

He owned Adrian Gonzalez all night. Gonzo went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts against CC and finished the night 0-for-5. CC scattered 10 hits over his six innings of work and came up big when needed.

The Red Sox loaded up the bases in the 2nd inning trailing 1-0 only to see Jacoby Ellsbury ground out. In the 4th inning after the Red Sox had cut the lead to 3-2, he finished off that inning by getting a strikeout of Gonzo to leave runners on second and third.

With second and third base occupied in the 5th and just one out for the Red Sox, Robinson Cano made a great catch of a Carl Crawford liner and the tub of lard struck out Jarrod Saltalamacchia.

Even the Yankees bullpen added to the Red Sox LOB total.

In the 7th,  the sacks were full of Red Sox with one out. But Boom Boom Boone Logan struck out Salty and Darnell McDonald to end the inning. In the bottom of the 9th, Mariano Rivera put two runners on but got pinch-hitter Josh Reddick to fly out to end the ballgame.

John Lackey started this one for the Red Sox and didn’t pitch all that badly. He made one mistake to Francisco Cervelli that he hit for a home run. Of course, Cervelli’s celebration at the plate would end up helping the Yankees get a run in the top half of the 7th.

Cervelli led off that inning and Lackey decided to send a message by hitting him square in the back. Tempers flared, benches emptied but there were no punches thrown and order was restored quickly. Lackey said after the game that he wasn’t trying to hit him. He was just trying to knock him down. It would cost Lackey and the Red Sox though when Cervelli scored on a Derek Jeter double play.

But now we move on from last night and look forward to tonight. A win for the Red Sox would be nice as it would keep them in first place. A loss and it’s back to second.

We’ll be back later with tonight’s lineups, batter/pitcher matchups and links from the day. But for now, enjoy the overnight links below.
