Giants beat Patriots as Coughlin Goes For Two, 18-17

New England Patriots defensive back Patrick Chung (25) runs back a fumble after New York Giants wide receiver Domenik Hixon was stripped of the ball during the first quarter of an NFL game in Foxborough, Mass., Thursday, Sept. 1, 2011. With Chung are Ras-I Dowling (21) and Jarrard Tarrant (30).

Even though the New England Patriots lost their preseason finale to the New York Giants 18-17 Thursday night at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, overall it wasn’t too bad an effort by a mix of players, some starters and some of the young guys looking to make the team.

There are still things to work on but come this weekend once the roster is paired down to the official 53-man roster and the practice squad players are signed things will finally fall into place to for good.

The Patriots jumped out to an impressive start again the Giants in the final preseason game when LB Rob Ninkovich forced a fumble on the Giants first offensive play and Patrick Chung recovered it.  Shortly there after RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis punched it in from one yard out and it was quickly 7-0 New England.

Newly acquired DT Albert Haynesworth started and played in his first game as a Patriot as did DE Shaun Ellis.  Both made some impact as Haynesworth got involved with a nice tackle in the second series and just before the end of the half Ellis got a 7-yard sack of Giants QB David Carr.

QB Tom Brady showed he is in regular season form and looking to defend his MVP award when he connected with WR Matthew Slater on a 64-yard catch and run.  It set up a field goal by Stephen Gostkowski that gave New England a 10-0.

The Giants responded with a 55-yard field goal from Rhys Lloyd to cut the lead to 10-3 heading into the second quarter.

Brady wasn’t long for the game as back up Brian Hoyer replaced him with 7 minutes to play in the second quarter.  Brady played 18 snaps in his final tune up.

To continue reading, click on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

Hoyer led the team on another scoring drive capped by a second 1-yard TD run by “The Lawfirm” to give the Patriots a 17-3 lead at the half.

Rookie QB Ryan Mallett saw some game time entering for Hoyer with 4:25 left in the third quarter.  Hoyer played 14 snaps after replacing Brady including taking a big hot and fumbling but he did recover the ball and remained in the game.

Da’Rel Scott went on a 65-yard scoring romp for the Giants early in the 4th as New York cut the New England lead to 17-10 with 14:50 left to play in the game.

Giants scored in the fourth quarter on an 11-yard fumble recovery by Derrick Martin to take an 18-17 lead with just over 9 minutes left in the game.  They got that lead when head coach Tom Coughlin decided to go for two after the defensive score.  Ryan Perrilloux threw the conversion pass to Jerrel Jernigan to give New York the lead.

Overall this was a good performance for the Patriots as they looked to build momentum for the regular season.  The top units got some time, stayed healthy and made some plays and all is well in Foxboro.

Game Notes

The spread (Patriots minus 7 ½) was not covered, as was the over/under (40).

WR Wes Welker was on the field in uniform for pregame warm ups r days after hurting his neck making a tackle in Detroit.

CB Antwaun Molden who was claimed on waiver yesterday is wearing #36 previously worn by James Sanders.

The starting front four on the defensive line for the Patriots was DE Shaun Ellis, DT Albert Haynesworth, DT Vince Wilfork and DE Andre Carter.

Rookie Ras-I Dowling started at RCB.

LB Niko Koutouvides was looked at on the sideline and was being given a concussion test after a shot to the head.

P Zoltan Mesko hurt his left hand making a tackle on a punt in the first quarter.  He returned.

LB Brandon Spikes among the players not dressed for the game.

Haynesworth played 16 snaps in the first half.

Rookie RB Shane Vereen saw his first game action as a Patriot.

Rookie OL Nate Solder saw every offensive snap through the first three-quarters.  After starting at right guard he flipped to the left side with the second unit.

S Brandon Meriweather saw his most playing time of the preseason.  All in the second half he saw time in the secondary mostly with the second team and guys who won’t be here come Sunday.

Patriots had three takeaways (1 INT, 2 fumbles) and 1 giveaways (0 INT, 1 fumble).

Next Game

The Patriots visit the Miami Dolphins at Sun Life Stadium on Monday September 12 in the 2011 Season Opener.  Kick off is at 7 p.m. on ESPN

I think we all remember back to 2006 when Boston Red Sox pitcher Jon Lester received his cancer diagnosis. Then we all remember him coming back in 2007 and being a part of the World Series team that year.

Well it’s now been five years that Lester has been cancer free. So to celebrate the occasion, NIKE and Livestrong will be placing this ad in Boston Globe on September 5th.

Afternoon Red Sox Delight – 9/1

A.J. Burnett (L), Jon Lester (R)

After winning last night, the Boston Red Sox look to grow their lead in the AL East in the rubber game of a three-game set with the New York Yankees tonight at Historic Fenway Park.

Today’s first pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. and will be broadcast in the Red Sox television market on NESN. If you live in the Yankees broadcast area, you can catch the game on the YES Network. If you don’t live in either market, you may be in luck as the MLB Network is scheduled to have coverage of the game outside of the Red Sox and Yankees markets. And if you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to the game on the 2011 Red Sox Radio Network.

Jon Lester makes his 26th start of 2011 tonight for the Red Sox. In his previous 25 starts, Lester is 14-6 with a 3.09 ERA. He’s made three starts against the Yankees this season and is 2-1 with a 5.00 ERA (10 ER/18 IP). He’s made 15 career starts against them and is 8-2 with a 3.62 ERA. Six of those starts have come at the Fens where he is 2-1 with a 5.19 ERA.

Since joining the Evil Empire, A.J. Burnett has not beaten the Red Sox. In eight starts as a member of the Yanks, he is 0-4 with a 7.77 ERA, including a loss this year back on June 8th where he allowed eight runs (seven earned). Overall in his career, Burnett has made 16 starts against the Red Sox and is 5-4 with a 5.16 ERA. Nine of those starts have come at the Fens where he is 3-3 with a 6.04 ERA. He’s made 27 starts this season and is 9-11 with a 5.31 ERA.

Red Sox News & Notes – 9/1

NY Post & NY Daily News Sports covers for Thursday, September 1, 2011

When Josh Beckett has faced off against the New York Yankees, he’s pretty much owned them. In his four starts before last night’s game for the Boston Red Sox against them this season, he was 3-0 with a 1.00 ERA.

While the ERA will go up a little after allowing five runs (four earned) last night, Beckett became the first pitcher since Al Nipper in 1987 to beat the Yankees four times in a season in the 9-5 win.

Beckett certainly has his batterymate Jason Varitek to thank as well as Jacoby Ellsbury and David Ortiz on the offensive side of things.

Varitek was clutch last night at the plate especially in the 6th inning. With Josh Reddick on at first and one out, Yankees starter Phil Hughes had two strikes on the captain. And as manager Terry Francona likes to do, he put the hit-and-run on with Tek and it worked out to perfection as he perfectly placed a ball down the left field line that would score Reddick and tie the game up at five.

Two batters later, Hughes was out of the game and Yanks skipper Joe Girardi brought in the only lefty he has in the bullpen, Boom Boom Boone Logan to face Ellsbury. But the move backfired on him and the Yankees as Ellsbury hit the first opposite field home run of his career to put the Red Sox out front 7-5.

In the bottom of the 8th with the Red Sox still clinging to the lead, Reddick led off the inning against Luis Ayala with a ground rule double to left. With the Captain coming up, this prompted discussion in the NESN booth from Jerry Remy about whether Tek would bunt him over. But before Remy could even get all of the words out of his mouth, Tek had taken an Ayala fastball out of the park to put the Red Sox comfortably ahead at 9-5.

Jonathan Papelbon would make sure that’s how the final score stood as he struck out two of the three batters he faced, needing just seven pitches to get the job done.

If it weren’t for a bad 6th inning from Beckett, the Yankees might not have even scored five runs. The offense had staked him to a 4-1 lead before that on Dustin Pedroia groundout and Jed Lowrie single in the 3rd inning after they had intentionally walked Big Papi. It was then Big Papi who burned Hughes with a 2-run johnson in the 5th inning.

Before that fateful 6th, Beckett was dealing. He featured probably the best curveball we’ve seen him from ever and used it effectively. Because of that curveball, he was able to use his pitches to his advantage. While he hit the bump in the road, he was doing what we’re accustomed to him doing.

And that’s dominating out on the mound.

The win last night was huge for the Red Sox in the sense that IF they lose tonight, they’ll still be in first place. The win pushed their lead to 1.5 games so at worse they’ll have a ½ game lead and at most a 2.5 game lead. You definitely want to see them win tonight though as we don’t need to see the Yankees winning a series at our park.

We’ll be back later with tonight’s lineups, batter/pitcher matchups and links from the day. But for now, enjoy the overnight links below by clicking on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.
