UConn coach Jim Calhoun looks out at the fans at the rally for the returning basketball team at Gampel Pavilion .

As if there was any doubt that this would happen, especially with the additions of DeAndre Daniels and Andre Drummond, UConn Huskies men’s basketball coach Jim Calhoun will be back on the bench for the upcoming season.

Here’s what UConn president Susan Herbst told the Hartford Courant’s Jeff Jacobs:

“He told today he is staying,” UConn President Susan Herbst said. “Obviously, we’re thrilled about it.”

Honestly, can you blame him at all. You’ve got those two guys coming plus Ryan Boathright and most of the cast of characters coming back. One thing Calhoun will have to work on right away though is the fact the Drummond needs a scholarship.

Since he was recruited, he needs to be on scholarship to play this season. The rumors are that Michael Bradley will give up his scholarship and apply for financial aid for the school year but nothing has been confirmed as of yet.

Also, as part of the NCAA sanctions last year, Calhoun will have to sit out the first three Big East games. And with the release of the 2011-12 UConn men’s basketball schedule today, we know now that those games will be against South Florida (road), St. John’s (home) and Rutgers (road).
