Maple Street Press Red Sox Annual 2007

Maple Street Press Red Sox Annual 2007 goes far beyond the basics and gives diehard Sox fans the detailed coverage of the team they crave. In collaboration with renowned Red Sox website Sons of Sam Horn, it provides over 100 pages of the most complete and in-depth coverage of the Red Sox available.

After another offseason of upheaval there are many questions facing the Red Sox as they enter the new season. Why did the Red Sox sign JD Drew? Is he worth the money? Is Julio Lugo going to be at shortstop for more than one year? Will Coco Crisp bounce back? Chad Finn gives a position-by-position break down of the new-look roster and what to watch for in the coming season. With the expanded room, the Annual is also able to go beyond the standard topics and examine things such as:

  • The story behind Dirty Water and how the now beloved song came to be the Red Sox victory anthem;
  • How winning impacts the Red Sox’s financial returns and off-season investments;
  • A thorough look at the courtship of Daisuke Matsuzaka from Rob Bradford;
  • How the offense cost the team a postseason appearance last season and what Theo Epstein has done to make sure that doesn’t happen again;
  • A detailed deconstruction of Theo Epstein’s bullpens over his tenure, and what to look for from his latest group of relievers;
  • Where Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz rank amongst the greatest 1-2 punches in baseball history; and
  • How the Red Sox’s new approach to the amateur draft might allow them to have an influx of premium talent

This and more is all packed into over 100 full-color pages of Red Sox coverage (not ads) unlike anything else available in print. This is a publication by Red Sox fans for Red Sox fans, and provides a level of coverage national publications cannot match.

JD over at SporTech Matter tells us that the Marlins have acquired Jorge Julio to fill their closer needs.

Astros skipper Phil Garner is thinking about making changes to his batting order.

Why did Braves pitcher Mike Hampton leave the mound with a smile on Tuesday?

Lou Pinella has to choose between two “Angels” to make his final roster.

The Diamondbacks fifth spot in the rotation is still not decided yet.

Juan Pierre will leadoff for the Dodgers if Rafael Furcal isn’t ready to play on opening day.

The Mets spring training camp and site have a new nickname: “Port St. Latterly

The Nationals starting pitching rotation is very inexperienced.

The MLBPA is looking into Todd Walker’s release from the Padres.

Freddy Garcia is hoping to pitch for the Phillies on April 7th.

Pirates infielder Freddy Sanchez went for a second opinion on his injured knee and is ready to test it on Wednesday.

Aaron Harang will be the Reds opening day starter for the second consecutive season.

Rockies pitcher Josh Fogg wasn’t happy after giving up 10 runs in 3 2/3 innings on Tuesday.

Red Sox News From The Fort

Jon Lester, who was placed on the 15 day disabled list, will start out the season in Class-A Greenville. His manager there will be none other than Gabe Kapler. With Lester returning from lymphoma, the Red Sox would like Lester to start out down there to build back up his strength for four starts.

“He’s going to start the season in Greenville for four starts and progressively ramp up his pitch count [and] endurance, and then we will make the next step from there,” said Red Sox manager Terry Francona. “That takes him through roughly 3 1/2, four weeks of April. It’s another start down here, and then four in Greenville.

“We want to get him out of Florida, get him to a situation where it’s a game type of situation with lights, but also at the same time in a situation where we can still monitor and before we completely take off the [reins] and let him go, turn him loose. I think he understands.”

Mike Timlin was back on the mound again on Tuesday and reported no problems with his strained oblique muscle. Hopefully he is not just telling them that he feels fine and is being honest. We don’t want to see Timlin come back on April 10th (his expected date of return), and get hurt the first time out. Yes, I know he will make some appearances back at the Fort before then, but most pitchers usually keep quiet when they have minor aches and pains.

“Timlin did great, had a very good day,” said Francona. “[The] ball came out of his hand very well, no problems with his side. He’ll have a down day tomorrow, and hopefully duplicate [the side sesson] on Thursday. He had a real good day, very encouraging. It was about 35, 40 pitches.”

Is Daisuke Matsuzaka having trouble adjusting to life in the big leagues? He claims to be ‘struggling‘ in his past two efforts on the hill. Well let’s see his numbers combined from his last two starts. 10 2/3 innings pitched, 1 hit, 6 walks, 13 strikeouts. 1 run allowed. I can see where he says he is struggling because the high walk total shows that he is struggling with his command. Could that be his adjustment to the big leagues?

“You’re going to have to get used to his being unhappy, with probably a really low ERA,” Francona quipped.

He is used to throwing in a 6 man rotation and having higher pitch counts. He is also used to throwing in front of the dugout between innings. This practice isn’t allowed in MLB.

“I think (Monday) was more of a spring training situation where pitchers are typically going to go through a short spell where they’re going to have a dip in arm strength,” Farrell said. “Whether you call it the ‘dead arm’ stage or what, he did have an abbreviated stint against the Dodgers (March 16) where he had to go through two innings (before the game was rained out) and then throw in the bullpen after that. It’s not the same intensity. But I think starters generally – when they go through their third or fourth start in spring training – there’s a little bit of a lull, so to speak, where command and arm strength, which go hand-in-hand, go through a little bit of a downtime but shortly come right out of it.”

I still have trouble understanding why he thinks he is ‘struggling’. It’s only spring training but I guess his work ethic and what he expects of himself is greater then what we expect of him right now. Of course when the season starts, all of Red Sox Nation will be hoping for 20 wins, sub 3.00 ERA and the Cy Young Award.

Gyroball: Fact or Fiction

So does Daisuke Matsuzaka throw a gyroball? New evidence brought out by Tom Verducci over at Sports Illustrated says that no, the gyroball doesn’t exist.

Here’s the truth: Matsuzaka’s changeup is so wicked, so unlike most every changeup anyone has seen, that people don’t know what to make of it. Matsuzaka has told me he does not throw the gyroball. Every Red Sox staff member and official I’ve talked with said he does not throw it.

“What the Marlins thought was the gyro was the changeup,” one of the Boston sources said. “That’s what people think is the gyro. It’s his best pitch.”

Said another Red Sox insider, “Japan is famous for copious scouting reports. If you throw a pitch once in your life the scout will include it in the report. Dice-K enjoys letting people think he throws it. There’s no harm in it. Why not just give them one more thing to think about?”

Dice-K

So was Dice-K pulling everyone’s chain when he said this back on February 15th.

(We’ve heard so much about the gyroball. Do you throw it and will we see it this season.)

[Matsuzaka pauses and grins] Hmm… how to answer this? I knew this was coming. I prepared some optional answers. Do I say I can, that I have it? Or do I ask what pitch you are referring to? Overall, if I have the chance, I will pitch that ball.

And here is what I had said just last week after watching the game and hearing the analysis on ESPN.

He even threw the mythical “gyroball.” Folks, this pitch simply doesn’t exist. When he throws this pitch, it is a change up with screwball action. All I know is he threw that ball and it looked like it was going to go over the middle of the plate and as soon as it got near the plate, the bottom fell out. Of course, it was called strike 3.

The big question here is who are we supposed to believe? Are we supposed to believe the guy, Verducci, who said baseball was clean after the “Game of Shadows” came out or Dice-K or ESPN? Well, two of the three aren’t credible. So I will go with Dice-K and say, No, the pitch doesn’t exist.

A Castle For The King…

King LeBron that is. LeBron James is in the middle of building a 35,440 square foot house. By comparison, a local Best Buy in the area is 45,000 square feet. The house will include a few of the normal amenities, a recording studio, a movie theater, a casino, a bowling alley and even a barber shop. So now when your over hanging out with the LeBron’s, you can cut a demo, watch White Chicks on dvd, play some craps, try to bowl a 300 game and even have some more Soul-Glo put in your curls.

Shockingly enough, there isn’t a swimming pool or even a basketball court. A king without his court just doesn’t sound right at all. Although there is room for a swimming pool that can be done later on if he so chooses.

The above picture is what you will see when you walk in. A limestone sculpture of LeBron wearing his trademark headband. If he ever sells the house, what will the new owners think of having LeBron’s mug on the front of their house.

LeBron’s neighbors are having a tough time with all the sightseers. People are parking in the street just to get a glimpse of the house and are even parking in neighbor’s driveways with no regard for his neighbors. Tom Bader, who lives next door had this to say:

“People who come to photograph it are disrespectful. They park their car in the middle of the street — with their doors open! And you’re sitting behind them! All I wanna do is go home after a hard day’s work.”

“As far as LeBron the man goes, I think he’s an outstanding individual. He’s great for Cleveland. I’m proud to have him. I have no issues with LeBron James at all. The problem is the baggage that he unintentionally carries with him.”

“My children obviously think it’s cool,. They can hardly wait to go over and play basketball with him. I said, `Honey, I don’t think that’s going to happen. Besides that, don’t ever, ever invite LeBron over to our house to play ball because he’s going to twist his ankle and I will have my house eternally egged.’ ‘

I’d have to say if that happened, his house would probably be burned down to the ground.

Boston Red Sox Finalize Roster

The Boston Red Sox have finalized their roster and if your name is Manny Delcarmen or Craig Hansen, you won’t be pitching in Boston or any MLB city to start the season. They were both sent down to Triple-A Pawtucket. Alex Ochoa, who was given the choice of being a free agent or accepting a job in Triple-A as well, has decided to accept the assignment and will report to Pawtucket. He will however be on the roster this weekend for the exhibition games against the Phillies. Here is a look at the 25 man roster broken down by position.

Pitchers:

  • Curt Schilling
  • Josh Beckett
  • Daisuke Matsuzaka
  • Tim Wakefield
  • Julian Tavarez
  • Jonathan Papelbon
  • Brendan Donnelly
  • Joel Piñero
  • Kyle Snyder
  • Hideki “Darkman” Okajima
  • J.C. Romero
  • Javier Lopez

Catchers:

  • Jason Varitek
  • Doug Mirabelli

Infielders:

  • Kevin Youkilis
  • Dustin Pedroia
  • Julio Lugo
  • Mike Lowell
  • Alex Cora
  • David Ortiz

Outfielders:

  • Manny Ramirez
  • Coco Crisp
  • J.D. Drew
  • Wily Mo Peña
  • Eric Hinske

Lopez could be the first one sent down when Mike Timlin returns from the disabled list on April 10th. He joins Matt Clement and Jon Lester on the DL.

Ria Cortesio Has A Dream

Is she hot?Ria Cortesio has a dream, and that dream is to be a professional umpire in MLB. She will get the chance on Thursday to call a big league exhibition game between the Diamondbacks and the Cubbies. She will be the first woman since Pam Postema to call a big league exhibition game. No woman has ever called a game or been an umpire in MLB ever. She hopes to change that.

”I’m looking forward to it. There will be a lot more people in the stands than I’m used to. I was kind of expecting it. Umpires with my seniority usually get picked. I don’t do this job to get on TV. But I hope it will raise the awareness a little.”

Cortesio started out in the Pioneer League back in 1999. For those of you who don’t know, minor league umpires don’t make shit for money. She started out making $1800 a month plus $34 a day meal money and 33 cents a mile. That’s right they don’t fly. If I remember correctly, the only leagues that minor league umpires fly in are the International League (AAA), Pacific Coast League (AAA) and Texas League (AA).

She is now going into her 5th season in Double-A ball. She will be back in the Southern League again and is the first person up for promotion to Triple-A. Let’s hope Lou Pinella is on his best behavior on Thursday.

Tuesday’s Half Marathon Around AL Camps

Here is your look at the news from American League camps in Arizona and Florida.

Jason Varitek needs more fingers when Daisuke Matsuzaka pitches.

Angels pitcher Joe Saunders gave up seven runs on Monday, but says he is healthy and ready to start the season.

Jason Windsor was demoted on Monday leaving just two pitchers competing for the 5th spot in the A’s rotation.

John Thomson will probably never wear a Blue Jays uniform after spring training.

J.P Howell and Edwin Jackson will battle to the death for the Devil Rays’ 5th spot in the rotation.

Buck Showalter has no idea what his job with the Indians entails.

Brandon Morrow didn’t hurt his chances of making the Mariners when he gave up his first run of spring training on Monday.

Orioles outfielder Jay Payton’s hamstring injury is not believed to be serious.

Jamey Wright is doing everything he can to make the Rangers as their fifth starter.

Tony Pena Jr. had a nice debut for the Royals this weekend. He hopes to be their starting shortstop after coming over from the Braves.

Jim Leyland made his final cuts and announced the Tigers 25 man roster. Chris Shelton wasn’t happy about his demotion.

Joe Nathan is hoping that the Twins will give him a contract extension. Where have we heard this before with the Twins.

Toby Hall is going to miss the entire season for the White Sox after tearing his labrum.

Yankees closer Mariano Rivera is adding a changeup to his arsenal.
