NASCAR News For the Fan in You

Toyota Racing Development

Yes this is still primarily a Boston Red Sox and UCONN Huskies blog. As it says at the top, other sports news. Plus I am a fan of NASCAR and watch when I can.

The rumors that were running around NASCAR garages last week that Joe Gibbs Racing would be switching from Chevrolet to Toyota became official on Wednesday morning.

The move by JGR allows them to be the top dog at Toyota.

“If anybody said at the beginning of the season Toyota would be sitting at a press announcement on Sept. 5 announcing Joe Gibbs Racing as a part of the overall team effort we all would have had a hearty laugh,” said Jim Aust, the vice president of Toyota Motor Sales and president and CEO of Toyota Racing Development.

“Joe Gibbs Racing is one of the most respected teams in NASCAR, a championship-caliber race team and a first-class organization,” Aust said. “We are confident that partnering with the Gibbs team will raise the level of our entire Toyota NASCAR program, and will be beneficial to all of the current teams racing the Toyota Camry.

J.J. Yeley, part of the Gibbs stable of racers, was out of a job when they announced Kyle Busch was joining them. Well, Yeley will now be driving for Hall of Fame Racing, which has a working agreement with JGR. Hall of Fame Racing will also make the move over to Toyota with JGR. Recently, Troy Aikman and Roger Staubach, owners of HoF Racing, sold their majority interest to Arizona Diamondbacks executives, Jeff Moorad and Tom Garfinkel. This now makes Tony Raines, the current driver for HoF Racing, a free agent.

If you’re a fan of Dale Earnhardt, Jr. and were worried about him not bringing over his crew chief and cousin, Tony Eury, Jr., don’t worry. Eury, Jr. will be joining Junior over at Hendrick Motorsports as his crew chief.

“Dale Jr. and I are both excited to continue working together,” Eury said. “With the resources we’ll have at Hendrick Motorsports, it’s an opportunity to consistently run up front and be in title contention every year. The goals are winning races and winning championships.”

Rick Hendrick also announced that Casey Mears will drive the #5 car, a number which Hendrick has had since 1984 when he got into the business.

New Homes Being Built For Many New York Area Teams

Metropolitan New York is the home to the most professional teams of any American city. It’s kind of appropriate in the city that never sleeps. Now many of theses teams are in the process of getting new stadiums with better fan amenities and more income for the clubs.

what the hell are they gonna call it?The latest to get in on the new stadium act are the Giants and the Jets. Ground was broken Wednesday on a new football stadium being built at the Meadowlands that will house both teams. It is the first stadium to be owned by two clubs. The yet to be named open air stadium will seat 82,500 in a bowl design. It will also feature a 300,000 square foot plaza set aside for tailgating.

The $1.3 billion stadium is being built next to Giants Stadium in the Meadowlands facility. It is expected to be ready in 2010.

Citi Field - new home of the MetsThis is the latest stadium effort for the New York/New Jersey area.

The New York Mets are in the process of building Citi Field across from their long time home Shea Stadium in Queens. The new home of the Mets is expected to be able to hold 45,000 fans and is scheduled for a 2009 opening. The $610 million facility, like all the new stadiums on this page, was designed by HOK Sport who designed many of the new style ball parks like Camden Yards in Baltimore.

New Yankee StadiumThe New York Yankees are also in the stadium act building the New Yankee Stadium across from the current ballyard in the Bronx. The new Yankee Stadium is slated for an April 2009 opening. The new ballpark, which has a cost of $800 million, will seat 51,000 fans or about 6,500 fewer than the current Yankee Stadium.

Other teams in the area getting new stadiums are the NHL’s New Jersey Devils. They move into a new facility, the 18,000 seat Prudential Center aka “The Rock”, this October in Newark after being in the Meadowlands since their inception. It is the first new arena to open in metropolitan New York since the Continental Airlines Arena opened in 1981.

The RockThe NBA’s New Jersey Nets are also trying to get a new facility. The team is looking to move to Atlantic Yards in Brooklyn for the start of the 2009 season but while the facility has been approved ground breaking is yet to have taken place due to lawsuits over the construction. The Nets have a lease at the Meadowlands until 2013 but can walk away if the new facility is ready. They also have an open invitation to join the Devils at the Prudential Center.

Former New England Patriots punter Danny Baugher was arrested just hours after being released by the team for assaulting his father.  Baugher and his father, Erle, were in a fast food restaurant parking lot at 4 a.m. when police were called for two men fighting.

Baugher in collegePolice say Baugher, 23, was drunk at the time of his arrest for assault.

According to the police report, a spat between father and son inside a vehicle escalated to the point where Danny Baugher punched Erle in the face. Erle Baugher, 54, declined medical treatment.

The police report described Baugher as “very evasive with his answers” and, when ordered out of the car, unable to keep his balance “due to high level of intoxication.”

According to the Boston Herald, Baugher pleaded not guilty on Thursday in Hingham MA District Court.  He was released on his own recognizance.

Red Sox News & Notes – 9/5

The course of last night’s game changed on one call by Kerwin Danley, who called Coco Crisp safe on a bang-bang play. The next pitch Roy Halladay throws was taken out of the park by Jacoby Ellsbury. Ellsbury has been money since he came up and he is going to make things very interesting next year in spring training for the Red Sox. Josh Beckett pitched well to get his MLB leading 17th win (later tied that night by the Yanks Chien-Mien Wang). And after begging and pleading with Terry Francona, Jonathan Papelbon pitched for three days in a row for the first time since he got hurt last year. Considering he had only thrown 23 pitches in the past 2 games, the situation was a little different. Papelbon was perfect again in closing out the game. Curt Schilling takes the hill tonight for the Red Sox but before he does, let’s take a look at the headlines from the Boston area and Toronto media on this gorgeous morning along the shores of Connecticut.

Shaq Dunks Wife

Miami Heat all-star center Shaquille O’Neal has filed for divorce from his wife Shaunie. The couple have been married nearly 5 years and have 6 children. Four of them together and one each with other people.

The O'Neal'sO’Neal who has won 4 NBA Championships, three in Los Angeles and one with Miami, had his attorney Ira Elegant file the petition on his behalf in Miami-Dade Circuit Court on Tuesday.

According to the petition O’Neal is asking his wife to provide a “correct accounting of all money, funds, stocks, bonds, and other securities” that she had access to or obtained during the marriage.

There is no word on whether he thinks she has taken assets from the marriage.

O’Neal makes $20 million annually with the Heat plus several million more in endorsements. Their home on Miami Beach’s posh Star Island is listed with a value of $32 million. They bought it in 2004 after O’Neal was traded from Los Angeles to Miami for $19 million.

Paw Prints – UCONN Football

SOX & Dawgs Paw Prints

Dan Davis and the other five captains at UCONN have decided to institute a new tradition at home UCONN football games called “Husky Walk”. A lot of the big time programs do this as well. Here is the scene at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville for the University of Tennessee home games.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=
http://youtube.com/watch?v=39FUG32AgW4[/youtube]

Here is a copy of the press release.

The University of Connecticut football team will debut a new pregame ritual by participating in a “Husky Walk” prior to its home game on Saturday night, allowing fans to cheer on the Huskies as they first arrive at Rentschler Field.

The walk will be held about two hours prior to kickoff. Thus, the inaugural event on Saturday will occur at about 5:00 p.m. with the team’s game against Maine slated for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff.

UConn’s team buses will unload for the Husky Walk near Gate D. The team will walk along the road on the east side of the stadium (near the FanFest and blue parking lot) from Gate D to Gate C before entering the stadium at Gate C. Fans are encouraged to arrive in advance of the 5:00 p.m. start time to line up along the path and cheer on both the team and a procession that will also include the UConn cheerleaders and marching band. Paw prints are being painted along the walk route which will begin with the team coming through a large “Husky Walk” banner.

To see a map of where this will start click here.

Hopefully this can be as good as the one in Knoxville and other places around the land.

Lawrence Green will miss Saturday’s game with a knee injury he suffered in the Duke game. Mike Hicks will take his place on the offensive line for the Huskies.

I know this isn’t football related but here’s a great editorial in this morning’s Hartford Courant about Elena Delle Donne.
