Hey Kool Aid! Maroney Runs Patriots To AFC Title Game

The Result

The Jacksonville Jaguars came to play and they played for most of the game. But when it came to crunch time the little things hurt them. Bad penalties, bad decisions by their coach and in the end the pressure on a fairly inexperienced quarterback added up to yet another win for New England Patriots as they beat the Jaguars 31-20 at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro MA on Saturday night in the AFC Divisional round.

Ben Watson catches one of his two TD passes in the 31-20 win over Jacksonville - Getty PhotoLed by the all round play of running back Laurence Maroney who ran for 122 yards and had another 40 yards receiving and Tom Brady who was damn near perfect as he went 26 of 28 and threw for 3 TD’s. His two incomplete passes were actually a pair of drops.

The offense tonight was more of the precision spread it around offense we’ve seen in the past from this team instead of the high powered offense they had this year. Four different players had rushes and 8 different players had receptions as Jacksonville concentrated on Randy Moss who had just 1 catch for 14 yards but had more receiving yards than Ben Watson who caught two TD passes.

The Jaguars hung tough as Garrard was pretty good himself and he had to be as the Jaguars decided they were going to rely on the pass as he went 22 of 33 for 278 yards 2 TD’s and 1 INT. He had several passes that went for 10 or more yards including big gainers of 34, 29, 25, 19, 18 and 15 yards. That’s too many single plays that become first downs and give up too much field position.

The Patriots did what they had to do to win and they did that for the 17th time this season.

C’s Take The Loss In Washington

Two of UConn's finest Ray Allen and Caron Butler - AP PhotoExcuse me while I interrupt the Patriots game to tell you that another Boston team, the Celtics played tonight.

Just a few short hours after Roy Hibbert gave the Georgetown Hoyas a 72-69 win over the UConn Huskies, the Boston Celtics took the Verizon Center court to take on the Washington Wizards. The end result was the same as their New England brethren as the Wizards got past the Celtics 85-78. The Celtics now have lost 2 of their last 3 games.

The Wizards were led in scoring by DeShawn Stevenson who had 19 points. Former UConn Husky Caron Butler had a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Antawn Jamison also had a double-double for the home team with 10 points and 16 rebounds.

Kevin Garnett going for a slam dunk - NBAE/Getty ImagesThe C’s were led by Kevin Garnett who had 19 points. Paul Pierce chipped in with 15 points and 6 assists. Eddie House came off the bench to score 10 points while another former Husky product, Ray Allen, had a poor night from the field (3-13) and finished with just 8 points.

Playing on back-to-back nights seemed to slow the C’s down as they had their worst offensive output of the season and committed 21 turnovers. Washington didn’t do much better taking care of the ball as they turned it over 20 times.

Antonio Daniels gave the Wizards the lead with a 3-pointer down the stretch and then the Celtics fouled Stevenson as he was shooting a 3-pointer. He made all three free throws to seal the deal.

Now when I always say free throws win games, I really do mean it. Look at the Wizards free throw numbers, 27-of-30. That’s how you win games folks, make your free throws.

The Celtics were without the services of point guard Rajon Rando, who hurt his back in last night’s win over New Jersey.

The Green will get a chance to avenge the loss to the Wizards as they will host them on Monday night at 7:30 PM at the TD BankNorth Garden.

UConn Women Shoot Down the Cardinals

Maya Moore going in for a layup - AP PhotoThe Louisville Cardinals tested the UConn women tonight but each time the Cardinals got close, the Huskies had an answer in their 92-71 win in front of a sold-out Freedom Hall in Louisville.

Louisville (11-5, 0-3 Big East) had gotten the lead down to 10 points with about 6 minutes remaining in the game before Ketia Swanier and Renee Montgomery connected on back-to-back-to-back 3-pointers to put the Huskies back up by 19 points.

Maya Moore led the Huskies (15-0, 3-0) in scoring with 23 points. She also had 7 rebounds and 6 assists. Tina Charles had her 4th consecutive double-double with 19 points and 14 rebounds. Swanier and Montgomery both added 12 points while Brittany Hunter nearly missed a double-double with 10 points and 9 rebounds.

Louisville’s Angel McCoughtry led all scorers with 30 points and added 11 rebounds. Keisha Hines added 13 points while Chauntise Wright chipped in with 12 points and 8 boards.

Montgomery and Moore got into some early foul trouble in the first half and a great half by McCoughtry, who had 18 of her 30 points in the first half, kept the Cardinals close at halftime as they only trailed 41-30 despite shooting 13-of-42 in the first half. Eight of those baskets were by McCoughtry. This was the second-closest halftime score for the Huskies all year.

The Huskies return to action on Tuesday night in Syracuse when the take on the Orange at the Carrier Dome. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 PM and the game will be televised locally on CPTV.

Georgetown Squeaks By UConn Men 72-69

Roy Hibbert draws a crowd of Huskies - AP Photo

A Roy Hibbert 3-pointer, just the 2nd of his career, with 4.2 seconds left in the game gave the #8 Georgetown Hoyas the 72-69 victory over the UConn Huskies in front of a packed house at the Verizon Center in Washington, DC. UConn had a chance to tie the game but Jerome Dyson lost the handle on the inbounds pass from Jeff Adrien to end the game.

Hasheem Thabeet defends Roy Hibbert - AP PhotoUConn had been up 67-61 before two Georgetown 3-pointers tied the game up. The Huskies went back up by 2 points before the Hoyas tied it up again, setting the stage for Hibbert’s 3-pointer.

UConn (11-4, 2-2 Big East) was coached today by associate head coach George Blaney as head coach Jim Calhoun was too ill to join the team on the bench. It was the first time since 2003, he had missed a game.

Georgetown (13-1, 3-0) was led by Hibbert with 20 points and 8 rebounds. DaJuan Summers added 14 points, Austin Freeman had 13 points and Patrick Ewing, Jr. chipped in 12 points for the victorious Hoyas.

Adrien led the way for the Huskies with 18 points. A.J. Price added 16 points despite being 3-of-11 from the floor. Doug Wiggins came of the bench to score 15 points and pull down 7 rebounds.

UConn had fallen behind by as many as 9 points in the first half before closing out the half on an 7-2 run to go in the locker room trailing 42-38.

The Huskies are off until Thursday night when the Providence Friars come to the XL Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 PM and the game will be televised locally on MyTV9.

Celt’s Notch 30th Win

Garnett grabs one of his 11 boards against the Nets - Getty Photo

The Boston Celtics got back to their winning ways on the road tonight with a 86-77 win over the poor-shooting New Jersey Nets in front of 19,990 at the Izod Center in East Rutherford, NJ Friday night.

Ray Allen goes for two against the Nets - Getty PhotoThe Green were led by the “Three Amigo’s” as Kevin Garnett had a double double with 20 points and 11 rebounds, Paul Pierce had 18 points and Ray Allen had 16 in the teams 30th win against 4 losses. The 30-4 record matches the 1959-60 Boston Celtics championship team for the best start in franchise history.

It wasn’t all good news for the Celtics as point guard Rajon Rondo left the game in the 3rd quarter with a back injury after being run out of bounds under the basket. His status is unknown for Boston’s game tomorrow night in Washington against the Wizards.

The Nets (18-18) got 17 points from Richard Jefferson, 16 from Vince Carter, 14 points and 16 rebounds from UConn product Josh Boone and Jason Kidd just missed a triple double with 11 points, 13 boards and 9 assists.

The free throws really killed New Jersey tonight they were pitiful as they were 9 of 24 from the line. They also struggled from the field in the fourth quarter as they made only 3 of 19 shots as they only managed 9 points in the final stanza.

The Celtics have not lost a division game this season.

UConn’s White Wins MAC Hermann Trophy

Yes I know I don’t write too much about the UConn men’s soccer team but when there’s some big news I feel an obligation to write about it. For those who don’t know me, I grew up playing soccer and played the game until around 1999 or so. As a small lad, my parents took me to UConn to watch the soccer games and as scary as it sounds, I still can remember some of the games (ask me what I had for dinner last night though and I won’t be able to tell you). My parents still attend games although I am sure it’s not as frequent as it was when my brother and I were growing up.

O'Brian White - MAC PhotoA little while back, I wrote a post about how UConn soccer stud O’Brian White was a finalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy as the top collegiate soccer player in the land. For those who don’t know, the Hermann Trophy is the equivalent of the Heisman Trophy in soccer.

On Friday, the Missouri Athletic Club announced that White was chosen as the recipient of the 2007 MAC Hermann Trophy winner as the top men’s collegiate soccer player. The top runner-up was Patrick Nyarko from Virginia Tech and last year’s winner, Joseph Lapira from Notre Dame, was third.

White is the third winner in the history of UConn men’s soccer. Joe Morrone, Jr. won the award in 1980 and Chris Gbandi won it in 2000. White was also the Soccer America Player of the Year, a first-team NSCAA/Adidas All-American and the 2007 Big East Offensive Player of the Year.
