In The Red Zone – Super Bowl XLII Edition Vol. 3

ITRZ logo

A former co-worker of mine is a New York Jets fan. He grew up and still resides in New York about a half-hour north of the city. He attends at least one game a year in person and bleeds Jets green.

I was listening to WFAN on Wednesday and got to thinking about him and it made me realize this must be one hell of a tough time for Jets fans. I mean the team you battle for sports page space in your own city and your prime division rival are playing each other in Super Bowl XLII. It must make Jets fans at the very least wanna heave their lunch.

Jets fans that called the radio station were pretty much beside themselves. They have no idea who to root for, or against, or if they should root for anyone at all. One caller said he was not going to even watch the game. He obviously does not care about civic pride or the pursuit of perfection.

If you sit down and think about this from a Jets fan perspective what could be worse that this?

Then add to the fact that:

The team blew a chance in the 2004 playoffs to advance to the AFC title game when place kicker Doug Brien missed a pair of field goals against Pittsburgh and former coach Herm Edwards went into “clock management mode” and basically frittered away the game.

Their hated division rival’s head coach spurned them and resigned after one day as the Jets head coach. Then three weeks later shows up in Foxboro smiling announcing his hiring to lead the Patriots and then goes on to turn them into perennial champions.

The current Jets head coach and even some of his staff comes from the New England Patriots. And after a successful first season that saw them go 9-7 and earn a wild card playoff birth, they got eliminated by the Patriots in the first round. Then this year they finish 4-12 and the “Mangenius” isn’t looking so smart and may very well be on the hot seat in 2008.

It’s been 39 years, THIRTY NINE YEARS, since Joe Namath led the Jets to their lone Super Bowl Championship with a stunning 16-7 upset win over the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III.

And now compound that with the fact that the team they share a city and the back pages with has now gone to four Super Bowls in the last 21 seasons and has won two of three that have been played, it has to hurt.

Then for good measure throw in that their hated division rival will not only be playing in their sixth Super Bowl but has a chance to win their fourth in the last seven years, is considered a dynasty and the team of the decade before this game is even played.

Thinking about it all, I wouldn’t blame Jets fans at all if on Sunday February 3rd they didn’t even turn on the game and instead just sat in the dark getting drunk while watching “Roseanne” reruns.

Red Sox News & Notes – 1/24

Red Sox News & Notes @ SOX & Dawgs

The Red Sox are going NASCAR for their trip to Japan. For the first time in their history, the Red Sox will have advertisements on their uniforms.

EMC patch the Sox will wear in JapanEMC Corp, a Boston area data storage provider, reportedly paid six figures to place their logo on the uniform. It will only be for the games in Japan as MLB does not allow it in the United States. Since the deal was brokered by MLB Japan, the Sox can wear the patch.

“It’s a groundbreaking deal. No corporations are allowed to have their logos on uniforms in the United States,” Red Sox marketing executive Sam Kennedy said. “It is very, very valuable from a corporate perspective to be branded on the players, on the content.”

I am glad it’s only for the Japan games because for some reason I could see Larry Lucchino and crew selling every part of the uniform for ad space to bring in additional revenue.

Besides the minor league deals with Dan Miceli and Dan Kolb, the Red Sox announced yesterday they had reached five more minor league deals. Those players are RHP Miguel Asencio, RHP Ben Howard, RHP David Thorne, C Steve Torrelaba and OF Rich Thompson.

Alvino Sentenced In Hit-and-Run Death Of Wines

Anthony Alvino and his scheming mother Donna - Courant PhotoAfter accepting a plea deal months back, Anthony Alvino received his sentence for his role in the hit-and-run death of UConn student Carlee Wines. Alvino will be spending the next 37 months in prison.

Alvino hit Wines with his SUV and then fled the scene back on January 20th, 2007. Wines died two days later from the injuries she suffered. Wines was only 19 years old and a freshman at UConn in Storrs, CT.

After Alvino hit Wines, he panicked and fled the scene on the advice of his girlfriend Michelle Hall. The next morning Hall asked the group to stay quiet as they made their way from the campus. Alvino eventually went home and his parents helped come up with a scheme to protect Alvino. They had been drinking at the time of the accident.

His parents were eventually charged with trying to cover up the investigation and will face charges in a New York court this year. Hall still awaits trial for her role in the hit-and-run.

Got Welker?

Wes Welker Milk Ad

New England Patriots wide receiver Wes Welker gets some touch up done on his makeup for a “Got Milk?” ad Tuesday in Mansfield MA during the Super Bowl bye week. In case you didn’t know they generally use yogurt to create the “milk” moustache.

It’s probably a good thing Wes shaved off that porn ‘stache he was growing a few weeks back, might have sent a mixed message to the kids.

Huskies Steal One From Bearcats

Trailing by one point with 9.8 seconds left, A.J Price was fouled before the ball was inbounded and subsequently made the two free throws as UConn would hold off a last second effort from the Bearcats to win 84-83 in front of a packed house at Fifth Third Arena on the campus of the University of Cincinnati.

Cincinnati (9-10, 4-3 Big East) had just gone back ahead 83-82 on layup by Rashad Bishop before the foul by Bishop on Price. After a timeout, Price calmly knocked down the free throws. The Bearcats had one last chance but a Marcus Sikes missed a jumper giving the Huskies a hard-fought road victory. The win was third for the Huskies (13-5, 4-3) on the road in the Big East. They won only two on the road in the Big East last season.

The big difference in the game was the Huskies free throw shooting. Yes, I said it again. Free throw shooting was one of the keys for the Huskies in the game. They were 32-of-37 (86.5%). The Bearcats on the other hand were 13-of-20 (65%). The great free throw shooting by the Huskies allowed them to overcome 36 points (12-27) from behind the 3-point line for the Bearcats. The Huskies were only 4-of-10 from 3-point land.

Hasheem Thabeet dunks in 2 of his 22 points - AP PhotoHasheem Thabeet paced the Huskies with 22 points and 7 rebounds. Jerome Dyson had 20 points, including big back-to-back three pointers when the Huskies were down 12 in the second half. Price had 13 points and Jeff Adrien has 12 points and 7 rebounds. Craig Austrie came off the bench to score 8 points, all from the charity stripe.

Deonta Vaughn led Cincinnati with 34 points, including an 8-of-11 from three point land. Alvin Mitchell, Bishop and Kenny Bolton all added 7 points while Jamual Warren, Adam Hrycaniuk and John Williamson chipped in with 6 points.

It was a see-saw game for the first 12 minutes of the game then Price picked up his second foul and went to the bench. Cincinnati then finished off a 12-0 run to go ahead 31-21. UConn battled back though as Austrie made 6 of his 8 free throws that cut the lead to 1. The Bearcats would go into the locker room up 3 points at 41-38.

UConn pulled ahead by four points early in the second half before Cincinnati came roaring back. With UConn down four points, UConn head coach Jim Calhoun picked up a technical foul and Vaughn made both free throws to go up 6. The Huskies fell behind by 12 points before they decided to turn up their defensive pressure. UConn went on an 11-2 run to get back in the game. UConn would finally get the lead back with 34 seconds left as Adrien hit two big free throws.

An absolutely huge win for the Huskies on the road. Cincinnati had beaten the likes of nationally ranked Pittsburgh and Villanova at home this season. It was great to see Thabeet assert himself on the offensive end. Hopefully, he can continue this as the season wears on.

This game should be a great confidence booster for the Huskies as they will head to Bloomington, IN on Saturday to take on the #7/8 Indiana Hoosiers in a nationally televised contest. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 PM and CBS has the game.

Toronto Treys Drop Celtics

Eddie House and Ray Allen eached missed shots on the Boston Celtics final possession as the Celtics dropped a 114-112 decision to the Toronto Raptors at the sold out TD BankNorth Garden on Wednesday night.

KG dunks - Getty PhotoJose Calderon hit an old fashioned three point play with 13 seconds left to give the Raptors a late 114-112 lead and they made it stand up with a little help as House missed a three and Allen couldn’t put back the rebound at the horn as the Celtics dropped to 33-7 on the season and it was the Green’s first loss in the division all year.

The Celtics were led by Kevin Garnett who had 26 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists. Boston had four other players in double figures as Ray Allen had 19 points 6 boards and 4 assists, Paul Pierce had 19 points, 5 rebounds and 9 assists, Tony Allen had 15 points and Rajon Rondo chipped in with 14 points.

The Raptors tore it up from beyond the arc hitting on 71% of their 3’s and they were perfect at the line going 19 of 19. Toronto was led by Calderon who had 24 points and 13 assists, Chris Bosh had 23 points and 7 rebounds, Anthony Parker had 23 points, the magician Andre Bargnani had 20 points, 7 boards and 7 assists and Carlos Delfino had 15 points, all on 3’s for the visitors.

As The Santana Turns – SSDD

As The Santana Turns @ SOX & Dawgs

If you’re wondering what SSDD means click here. And know that you know what it means, there really isn’t much going on in As The Santana Turns. The only news that is out there right now is that the Twins are again talking to the three teams (Mets, Red Sox and Yankees) who seem to be in contention for Johan Santana.

From the Star-Tribune:

First of all, the Twins continue to talk to the Mets, Red Sox AND YANKEES about deals for Johan Santana. Despite the Yankees claiming that they are out of the running, I’ve been told the Twins have spoken with all three teams in recent days.

I kept being told that the Twins are willing to go to spring training with Santana, although that would be the worst-case scenario. For now, the Twins have stepped up their efforts to make a deal with one of these teams before camp opens.

All I can say is that Minnesota needs to decide one way or the other. It’s time for this soap opera to end.

New England Patriots defensive lineman Richard Seymour denies claims by San Diego Chargers center Nick Hardwick that he is a dirty player. Hardwick made an off the cuff statement to the media around his locker after the Chargers lost the AFC Championship game on Sunday to the Patriots 21-12.

“There are 10 [expletive] good players on that team, but Richard Seymour is a dirty, cheap, little pompous [expletive],” Hardwick told reporters after the game. “They’ve got 10 great players on that team and when Jarvis Green comes on the field, they’ve got 11 great players who compete how you’re supposed to play.”

“But Richard Seymour is the biggest [expletive] I’ve ever played.”

Seymour responded to Hardwick’s charges in a Boston Globe article:

“Whatever I did, it was between the whistles,’ he said, according to the Globe. “Of course there is some pushing and shoving; it’s a physical game. That’s the way I play the game. There was nothing after the whistle, but it’s a violent game and I play the game violently.”

“My thing is that if you’re going to speak, please speak the truth,” he added, according to the Globe. “The film, if you look at the copy of the game that teams get, you can see what they were doing to me — pushing me over the pile, and all that stuff in the trenches. You can see it yourself. So for me, the proof is in the pudding. You judge a tree by its fruit.”

Red Sox News & Notes – 1/23

Red Sox News & Notes @ SOX & Dawgs

Looking to score tickets to a Red Sox home game this season? Do you have plans on Saturday? Well if you’ve answered yes to both questions, then this post is for you.

Red Sox tickets babyThe Boston Red Sox announced yesterday that single game tickets will go on sale to the general public at 10 AM on Saturday.

Starting this Saturday, January 26, at 10:00 a.m., fans can purchase tickets to most 2008 single games by touchtone phone at (617) 482-4SOX or online at redsox.com. Fans with disabilities may call (877) REDSOX-9 to purchase accessible seating (while supplies last). The Red Sox’ TTY number for hearing-impaired fans is (617) 226-6644.

You will be allowed to purchase a maximum of 8 tickets. So you can buy 8 for 1 game or break it down however you like, just remember you only get 8 tickets. Plus if you’re trying to get tickets for opening day, any games the New York Yankees are in town and the Green Monster or right field roof deck seats, you will have to wait.

The Red Sox will be holding ticket lotteries for those games and more information will become available next week from the Red Sox.

“We want to thank our fans for their overwhelming support, and it is very much appreciated,” said Larry Lucchino, the Red Sox’ President/CEO. “We ask that everyone be patient through the initial sale and please understand that sometimes the ticket limits and methods we employ to make the ticket purchasing process fair may generate some delays. Our goal is to provide as many different fans as possible the opportunity to experience Red Sox Baseball at Fenway Park.”

Good luck Red Sox fans on getting tickets. Plan on spending your day on hold or in the virtual waiting room.

Nick Cafardo writes that the Red Sox could add a left-handed hitter by the end of the week.

The Sox would love to sign Brad Wilkerson, the former Expo and Ranger, but he might have options for more money and security elsewhere. The Sox prefer someone who can play a corner infield spot and protect either Kevin Youkilis and/or Mike Lowell. In the past the Sox have rested Lowell by moving Youkilis to third. That could still happen if the Sox obtain a backup first baseman.

There are still interesting ones out there such as Sean Casey, Tony Clark, Doug Mientkiewicz, Mark Sweeney, and Eric Hinske.

Casey, 33, is an intriguing possibility. He’s lost his first base job to Carlos Guillen in Detroit. He’s limited defensively, but he hit .296 last season with four homers and 54 RBIs. He also hit .455 as a pinch hitter (5 for 11) with three RBIs. He had a .353 on-base percentage and has a .366 OBP over his 11-year career. Casey loves Boston and at this stage of his career has indicated his main objective is to play for a team that can win the World Series. He would accept a limited role.

I know the Red Sox want someone who can play a corner infield spot to give Youk and Lowell a break but I’d rather see a guy like Bobby Kielty come back. Unfortunately, I don’t think that is going to happen. I guess that’s why I am a blogger and not a baseball general manager.

The Red Sox also signed Dan Kolb and Dan Miceli to minor league deals yesterday.
