Afternoon Red Sox Delight – 9/27

Weather permitting, Dice-K goes in search of his 8th consecutive win.

With the Boston Red Sox losing last night to the New York Yankees, their hopes of a second straight AL East title went up in the rain clouds that covered Fenway Park. Unfortunately those same rain clouds have made their way back into the Boston area and today’s game is in limbo.

Daisuke Matsuzaka was scheduled to start for the Red Sox last night and had his start pushed back until this afternoon due to the inclement weather. He goes in search of his 8th consecutive win this afternoon and quite possibly his 19th of the season. He has faced the Yankees once this season and is 1-0 with a 7.20 ERA. He has faced the Yankees 5 times in his career and is 3-1 with a 6.30 ERA. In 3 starts at Fenway Park against the Yankees, he is 2-0 with a 6.11 ERA.

Joe Girardi trots out the Pillsbury Dough Boy, Sidney Ponson, who will try to end his season on a  positive note since the Yankees are not playoff bound. He’s 0-2 with an 11.42 ERA in two starts against the Red Sox this season. He is just 3-13 in his career with a 6.95 ERA in 22 starts.

Good news on Mike Lowell. He was feeling much better this morning when he woke up.

You won’t see Derek Jeter on the field today or tomorrow. He’s out with a sore hand.

Terry Francona didn’t care when the Red Sox started their hopeful run to the World Series.

Curt Schilling checked in over at 38 Pitches.

Be sure to vote for your 2008 Red Sox MVP in the left sidebar.

Paw Prints – The Daily Roundup – 9/27

Paw Prints Daily Roundup

It was a great win for the UConn Huskies football team last night as they rallied from an 11 point deficit to beat the Louisville Cardinals 26-21. The win was costly though for the Huskies as they lost starting quarterback Tyler Lorenzen to a broken foot and starting tight end Steve Brouse to a broken right fibula. Both will undergo surgery on Sunday and will be out at least 6 weeks, quite possibly the season.

After a rough couple of series for Zach Frazer, he settled in and helped led the Huskies to 10 points to get them back in the game. Lawrence Wilson’s 45-yard interception return for a touchdown gave the Huskies the lead as the defense made it hold up the rest of the way to give the Huskies their first Big East win of the season and just their 3rd ever Big East road win.

Chip Malafronte of the New Haven Register, Neill Ostrout of the Connecticut Post, Joe Perez of the Norwich Bulletin and John Silver of the Journal Inquirer all have their postgame notebooks. Desmond Conner of the Hartford Courant has some postgame thoughts and morning after thoughts as well.

The Huskies suffered a plethora of injuries last night.

Zach Frazer did a great job of picking up the Huskies when Tyler Lorenzen went down.

Tyler Lorenzen’s injury now puts the focus on Zach Frazer for the foreseeable future.

Alex Polito didn’t make the trip to Louisville.

It was road win for the books for the UConn football team last night.

Brian Bennett of ESPN.com says the Huskies keep chugging along. He also talks about the night Zach Frazer had.

Desmond Conner has a look at what went right and went wrong for the Huskies.

UConn men’s basketball freshman Nate Miles isn’t allowed on campus until at least Thursday when he goes in front of the UConn review board.

UConn men’s basketball recruit Durand Scott is on an official visit this weekend.

CPTV is once again offering the games they cover online.

Kaili McLaren is trying to reassure Geno Auriemma she can play in the post.

The UConn Huskies men’s soccer team fell 3-1 to the St. Johns Red Storm.

Boston Red Sox News & Notes – 9/27

Jed Lowrie ponders why the Red Sox are playing in a pooring rain.

There’s only way to describe last night’s game and it has 4 letters. U G L Y.  It was ugly in the weather and it was ugly in the play of the Red Sox.

Things started out good for the Red Sox as they took an early 3-1 lead but that lead evaporated quickly and became too much for them to overcome. As a result of the loss, the Red Sox are now officially the American League Wild Card winner and the Tampa Bay Rays are the AL East winner.

It was announced early this morning that the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim had chosen the 8-day ALDS meaning the Red Sox will start in Anaheim on Wednesday. It also gives both squads the opportunity to throw their top two pitchers twice in the series if need be.

Mike Lowell returned to the Red Sox lineup last night and quickly exited it after reaggrevating his hip injury in his only at-bat of the night. With Lowell hurt again, there’s a distinct possibility that he won’t be available to the Red Sox in the playoffs.

“I would defer to we’ll see what time says,” Lowell said. “By no means do I think I’m owed a roster spot just because I’ve played here. If I’m not going to do anything that can help the team win . . . but in the short series it’s a little different. You don’t have to carry as many pitchers. Maybe pinch hitting is an op tion. We’ll see. I’m not ruling out anything yet, but obviously I was disappointed today.”

After being scratched from his start last night, Daisuke Matsuzaka will start for the Red Sox tonight.

Yankees GM Brian Cashman will make a decision on his future sooner rather than later.

After waking stiff and sore on Friday, J.D. Drew underwent a battery of tests on his injured back.

Yankees closer Mariano Rivera will most likely undergo surgery on his shoulder during the offseason.

PawSox manager Ron Johnson is helping out the Red Sox for the time being.

Jason Giambi has no regrets about his time with the Yankees.

Jason Bay’s former Pirates teammates sent him many well wishes when they found out he’ll be heading to the postseason.

Here’s a pretty good reason why the Red Sox scratched Daisuke Matsuzaka last night.

Here’s a look at the numbers of Jonathan Papelbon and Francisco Rodriguez.

Another Sign Of The Apocalypse

There are a lot of examples of opposites attracting in couples over time.  Ted Danson and Whoopi Goldberg, Julia Roberts and Lyle Lovett, Woody Allen and Soon-Yi Previn, Anna Elway and GreenNicole Smith and J. Howard Marshall, Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley. But did you ever think you’d see Denver Bronco great John Elway marry a former Raiderette?

Yep that’s right Elway popped the question to his girlfriend, Paige Green, who happens to be a former Los Angeles Raiders cheerleader. This has to be stunning news in the Rocky Mountains. A Colorado legend marrying someone from the dark side this has to be a sign of the impending apocalypse.

With it there are questions. Will Raider owner Al Davis give away the bride? Will she wear silver and black? Will her bridal party be made up of those nut jobs who attend Raider games? Is she doing this to steal and then fence Elway’s two Super Bowl rings? Will the wedding have a pirate theme? Will Broncos OnesieRaiders OnesieElway renounce the Broncos and pledge his allegiance to Davis and then get named Raiders head coach after Lane Kiffen is fired? If they have children which teams onsie’s will the babies wear? Will half the church and the hall be orange and blue and the other half silver and black? Will Elway start wearing an eye patch, carry a sword and call everyone “matey”? Will he have to sleep on the couch every time the Broncos beat the Raiders?

Arrrrr matey’s my head is spinning just thinking about it.
