So You Want To Do Play-By-Play

I’ve been diligently looking for work lately and in searching some non-traditional places for job postings along with the usual sites I came across an ad on Craig’s List for a part-time hockey play-by-play announcer.

There was only one catch though. You need to be able to call the game in Chinese.

Hi

I am looking for a native Chinese to go hockey game and report the game in Chinese.

Please email me if you are interested.

Thanks

Sounds like a great gig for Chip Caray.

Breaking News: Wilfork Will Not Be Suspended

ITRZ breaking news

According to Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk, New England Patriots defensive tackle Vince Wilfork will not be suspended by the NFL for his actions in the game against the Denver Broncos two weeks ago.

A league source tells PFT that Patriots defensive tackle Vince Wilfork will be fined but will not be suspended after meeting Tuesday with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

Per the source, Goodell had suspension on his mind heading into the meeting but came out of it convinced that Wilfork understands the league’s focus on player safety.

This is good news for the Patriots as they head into their matchup against the Indianapolis Colts this weekend. I fully expected Wilfork to get at least a 1 game suspension.

Update 10/30 at 10:30 AM – Wilfork has been fined $35,000 by the NFL for what is being called a pattern of aggression and not from any specific hit on Broncos QB Jay Cutler.

Boston Red Sox News & Notes – 10/29

The Boston Red Sox filled out their 40-man roster yesterday when they claimed Virgil Vasquez off of waivers from the Detroit Tigers.

Vasquez spent the 2008 season in Triple-A with the Toledo Mud Hens where he was 12-12 with a 4.81 ERA in 27 starts. He has a little big league time as he was called up by the Tigers in 2007 when he went 0-1 with a 8.64 ERA in 5 games (3 starts).

Earlier this week, the Red Sox removed Gil Velazquez and Chris Smith from the 40-man roster and both of them have elected to become free agents.

If you missed the news yesterday, Lee County voted 3-1 to keep the Red Sox there for the next 30 years. It’s now up to the Red Sox to sign the agreement as well.

Boston Celtics Receive Their Rings & Raise Banner 17

Boston Celtics Championship Ring and Banner

Before last night’s game with the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Boston Celtics received their 2008 NBA Championship rings. After receiving their rings, they raised Banner 17 into the rafters at the TD Banknorth Garden.

Here is the Boston Celtics ring ceremony again for you to enjoy.

Unfortunately TNT did not show the video montage of the Celtics playoff run as well as Paul Pierce addressing the crowd before the game. Still a great moment nonetheless.

After trailing the entire first half, the Boston Celtics defense stepped up it’s game in similar fashion to last season as they outscored the Cleveland Cavaliers 24-13 in the 3rd quarter on their way to a 90-85 win in front of a sold out crowd at the TD BankNorth Garden.

Paul Pierce, who was very emotional during the ceremonies, led all scorers in the game with 27 points and added 3 rebounds, 4 assists and 1 steal. Rajon Rondo added 14 points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 steals while Kevin Garnett had 11 points and 6 rebounds.  Leon Powe and Tony Allen added 13 points and 11 points respectively for the Celtics off of the bench.

LeBron James paced the Cavs with 22 points on 9-of-21 shooting. Zydruna Illgauskas had 15 points and 12 rebounds while the newest Cavalier Mo Williams added 12 points.

Cleveland definitely came into the TD BankNorth Garden with a chip on their shoulder since the Celtics eliminated them from the playoffs last season in the Eastern Conference Semifinals. It was a physical game as well as the two teams were whistled for a combined 54 fouls (28 Bos, 26 Cle) plus two sets of double technical fouls.

Next up for the Celtics is Halloween night matchup with the Chicago Bulls at 8 PM at the TD BankNorth Garden.

Lee County Approves Agreement With Boston Red Sox For New Spring Training Complex

City of Palms Park, Ft. Myers, FL

As we know, the Boston Red Sox have been busy negotiating with Lee County on a proposal to keep the Red Sox spring training home there. The Red Sox currently hold their spring training at City of Palms Park in Ft. Myers, FL.

As the years have gone by, the Red Sox have outgrown City of Palms and had decided to potentially move. After talks with Sarasota County broke down, the Red Sox spent the last month talking to Lee County and last night came up with a 50 page agreement to keep the Red Sox in Lee County and to build a new spring training complex.

I will preface this by saying, the way I originally saw this was that the Red Sox had already agreed to this. But after watching Mike Dee from the Red Sox talk today at the hearing, the Red Sox have NOT signed off on this as of yet.

The first hurdle has been cleared though as the Lee County commissioners voted today 3-1 to pass the agreement and put the ball into the Red Sox court. Dee did say that due to the time constraints, the Red Sox would most likely have a decision in the next two weeks.

From what I can understand, the only money the Red Sox would be putting into this is towards paying the lease agreement. The new lease would run for 30 years and initially start out at $500,000 per year with an increase of 3% every 5 years. There would also be two 10-year options that could keep the Red Sox there for the next 50 years.

To me this is a win-win for the Red Sox and Lee County. For the Red Sox, it’s simple. A new spring training complex along with minimal investment. For Lee County, while the initial costs may be high, the revenue that will come in with a bigger stadium and the fact the Red Sox would use the facility more than they use City of Palms now will also bring in more revenue for the area.

And if Lee County can bring in another team to make use of City of Palms Park, the potential for even more revenue is there.

Here’s a look at some of the details:

Where: Will be located somewhere south of Daniels Parkway, north of Bonita Beach Road, east of U.S. 41 and west of the proposed County Road 951.

Capacity: 9,999 fixed seats with capacity of 12,000 when berm and standing room only are included.

Design: Similar to Fenway Park and with a hand-operated scoreboard in left field.

Practice fields: Six practice fields

Timeline: By Dec. 31, preliminary cost budget; by Jan. 15, 2009 preliminary financing plan; by Feb. 1, 2009 select architects and construction firm; by June 1, 2009 select a site; stadium ready no later than Dec. 1, 2012.
