UConn Women Lose Out On Gross

UConn women's basketballUConn Huskies women’s basketball recruit Krista Gross had the Huskies in her top four schools after her visit to the UConn campus. But the allure of playing close to home was the ultimate factor for Gross as she announced today that she will be attending the University of North Carolina next season to play for the Tar Heels.

“I’ve known a few of the players for a while now,” Gross said, “and the coaches I’ve known for a long time but ultimately it came down to location.”

“For me when it came down to the players it felt like I was playing with my friends,” Gross said, “rather than just some teammates.”

For Geno Auriemma this leaves him with just one recruit for next season in Kelly Faris. Transfer Jessica McCormack will become eligible next season and it’s quite possible that Kalana Greene could return for a 5th year if she so chooses since she was a medical redshirt last season after tearing her ACL. Auriemma already has received a commitment from Samarie Walker for the 2010-11 season.

The Huskies will lose Renee Montgomery, Tahirah Williams and Cassie Kerns to graduation in the spring.

Mayo, Gostkowski Honored; Wilfork Fined

ITRZ

The NFL has announced that New England Patriots rookie linebacker Jerod Mayo was the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Month for October.  He has started all 7 games this year and led the team in tackles for October with 24 in helping them to a 3-1 record for the month.  He is the first Patriots rookie to win a monthly award since Deion Branch was offensive Rookie of the Month in September 2002.  He is the first New England player to win the defensive award which started in 1996.

The league also announced that Patriots kicker Stephen Gostkowski was the AFC Special Team’s Player of the Month, making 9 of his 10 field goal attempts and all of his extra points.

And finally, as we all suspected the NFL fined nose tackle Vince Wilfork 35,000 for his hit on Jay Cutler in Week 7.

Macha To Manage Brew Crew

MachaNESN Red Sox baseball analyst Ken Macha is set to be named the new manager of the Milwaukee Brewers.  He will replace former Boston third base coach Dale Sveum, who was named interim manager after Ned Yost was let go with about two weeks left in the season.  Sveum was able to right the brewery and get the team into the playoffs for the first time since 1982 but it wasn’t enough for him to keep the job permanently.

Macha is a former minor league manager in the Red Sox system and was manager of the Oakland A’s for 4 seasons, twice winning the AL West and taking the Athletics to the playoffs before losing to Boston in the Division series in 2003 and in 2006 they beat the Minnesota Twins in the Division Series and lost to the Detroit Tigers in the ALCS.   Three times Macha’s teams won at least 91 games, overall he has a 368-280 career managerial record.

Macha was nearly let go by Oakland after the 2005 season when initially he and the team couldn’t come to an agreement on the contract and Macha had sought out other offers.  He eventually signed a one-year deal and came back in 2006.  After 2006 he was let go by Oakland despite nearly leading the team to the World Series.

The last two season’s Macha has worked as a baseball analyst for NESN before and after select Red Sox games boring Sox fans to tears and curing insomnia all over the Northeast.

Philadelphia Phillies Win 2008 World Series

Phillies win!

Congratulations to the Philadelphia Phillies for winning the 2008 World Series over the Tampa Bay Rays. This is just the second time they’ve won the World Series, with the first being in 1980.

It was a magical ride for the Rays but the season is over now. Now it’s time for the craziness that is the offseason.
