The NFL has announced that New England Patriots rookie linebacker Jerod Mayo was the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Month for October.  He has started all 7 games this year and led the team in tackles for October with 24 in helping them to a 3-1 record for the month.  He is the first Patriots rookie to win a monthly award since Deion Branch was offensive Rookie of the Month in September 2002.  He is the first New England player to win the defensive award which started in 1996.

The league also announced that Patriots kicker Stephen Gostkowski was the AFC Special Team’s Player of the Month, making 9 of his 10 field goal attempts and all of his extra points.

And finally, as we all suspected the NFL fined nose tackle Vince Wilfork 35,000 for his hit on Jay Cutler in Week 7.
