Former Husky Darius Butler Named AFC Defensive Player of the Week

Cecil Shorts #84 of the Jacksonville Jaguars misses a pass defended by Darius Butler #20 and Antoine Bethea #41 of the Indianapolis Colts during a game at EverBank Field on November 8, 2012 in Jacksonville, Florida.

A very nice honor for former UConn Huskies defensive back Darius Butler who now plays for the Indianapolis Colts.

Here's the release from the Colts:

INDIANAPOLIS —The NFL today announced that Indianapolis Colts cornerback Darius Butler has been named the AFC Defensive Player of the Week for Week 10. This marks the first time Butler has earned the award in his career.

In Butler’s first start of the season, he contributed with two interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown, and one fumble recovery in a 27-10 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars. Butler became the first Colt to record three-or-more takeaways in a game since Mike Prior in 1992. Since moving to Indianapolis in 1984, the Colts have had only two other players record three-or-more takeaways in a single game.

The interceptions for Butler were the fourth and fifth of his career and first since 2009. He now holds career totals of 98 tackles (87 solo), 26 passes defensed and five interceptions in 46 games played (15 starts).

Video: Darius Butler Pick Six Off Blaine Gabbert

Former UConn Huskies cornerback Darius Butler, who now plays for the Indianapolis Colts, picked off Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blaine Gabbert and returned it for a touchdown on Thursday night.

It's his fourth career interception and second interception he's returned for a touchdown. The first came with the New England Patriots during the 2009 season.

Easley Promoted To Bills 53-Man Roster

Marcus Easley #81 of the Buffalo Bills carries the ball during the game against the Minnesota Vikings on August 17, 2012 at Mall of America Field at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

After spending the 2010 and 2011 seasons on the Buffalo Bills injured reserve, Stratford, CT native and former UConn Huskies wide receiver Marcus Easley will finally get his chance to play in the NFL.

Easley, who was cut before the season and then signed to the Bills practice squad, was promoted from the practice squad on Tuesday to the Bills 53-man roster.

He was a fourth-round pick of the Bills in 2010 but missed the 2010 season with a knee injury suffered in the preseason.  He was inactive for the first game of the 2011 season and was then placed on the injured reserve list with a heart ailment.

Easley made three catches for 35 yards during the 2012 preseason before being cut.

Whether he's active or not for Sunday's game against the New England Patriots remains to be seen but it is nice to see Easley finally get his chance.

Lutrus, Lloyd Promoted To 53-Man Roster With Colts, Eagles

Scott Lutrus (L), Greg Lloyd (R)

After spending the first 12 weeks of the season on the practice rosters of the St. Louis Rams and Philadelphia Eagles, former UConn Huskies linebackers Scott Lutrus and Greg Lloyd find themselves on 53-man rosters in the NFL.

Lutrus, who was undrafted, had been on the Rams practice squad all season before was signed away on Tuesday by the Indianapolis Colts. He has been among the final cuts by the Jacksonville Jaguars before the season started and joined the Rams practice squad on September 5th.

He had battled injuries through his time at UConn but it appears now he’s healthy enough to play in the NFL. He’ll actually get a mini-homecoming on Sunday as the Colts are in Foxboro to take on the New England Patriots.

With Moise Fokou being placed on the season-ending injured reserve, Lloyd has been signed from Eagles practice squad to their 53-man roster.

Lloyd was a seventh round pick of the Eagles in the 2011 NFL Draft and also was among the final cuts. Obviously the Eagles saw something in him as he was signed to their practice squad and now he’ll get to show them why.

Patriots Sign Former UConn Huskies OL Donald Thomas Again

Just a few days after being released by the New England Patriots, former UConn Huskies offensive lineman Donald Thomas finds himself back in the NFL again.

University of Connecticut's Donald Brown (34) looks to a referee to see if he scored at the end of the second half at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh on Saturday, Sept. 22, 2007. He was ruled just short of a touchdown, but UConn scored on the next play. At left is Pittsburgh's Mike Phillips and at right is UConn's Donald Thomas. With Matt Light suffering an injury in Monday night’s win over the Kansas City Chiefs, the Patriots have re-signed Thomas to the 53-man roster. Stop me if you’ve heard this one about a 1,000 times this season (actually 17th roster move with him) but Ross Ventrone has been released to make room on the roster for Thomas.

Thomas was signed by the Patriots on September 14th and has seen action in four games this season with them.

The former Husky was a sixth round pick of the Miami Dolphins in 2008. He started one game for the Dolphins in 2008 before being placed on injured reserve list. He played in all 16 games, starting 12 of them, for the Dolphins in 2009.
