Video: Irish Women Knock UConn Off Their Perch 73-72

UConn's Kelly Faris, right, returns to the bench as Notre Dame players celebrate their victory at Gampel Pavilion Saturday afternoon.

Maybe Geno Auriemma and the No. 1 UConn Huskies women's basketball team should be glad the No. 5 Notre Dame Fighting Irish are leaving for the ACC. Because man oh man have the Irish owned the Huskies as of late.

Behind two late free throws by All-American Skylar Diggins, the Irish were able to hold off the Huskies late to pickup a 73-72 upset win in front of a sold-out crowd and nationally-televised audience at Gampel Pavilion on Saturday afternoon.

The Huskies suffer their first loss of the season as they fall to 12-1 (0-1 Big East). Notre Dame improves to 12-1 (1-0).

Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis and Stefanie Dolson led UConn with 17 points each and they also had eight rebounds a piece. Kelly Faris had her usual nice all-around game with 13 points, 11 rebounds, seven assists and five steals.

Breanna Stewart added 10 points, nine rebounds and six blocked shots while Bria Hartley had nine points.

Kayla McBride paced the Irish with 21 points while Diggins added six rebounds, five assists and four steals to her afternoon. Michaela Mabrey added 11 points while Jewell Loyd had 10 points.

Natalie Achonwa finished with a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds.

This game was a far cry from where the Huskies dominated the Stanford Cardinal. I think we all expected UConn to do the same thing to Irish.

Instead, Notre Dame looked like the No. 1 team not the Huskies as they were more physical and tougher than the Huskies. Whenever UConn threw a punch at Notre Dame, the Irish responded with a combination punch of their own.

In the grand scheme of things, this loss doesn't hurt the Huskies. In fact, I think it helps them. It shows they are not invincible and what they need to work on.

They'll get at least once more chance against the Irish this season in the Big East regular season finale. And it wouldn't surprise me if they met up in the Big East Tournament.

But for now, it's time to look at the game tape, find the flaws and fix them before their next game.

That game will come on Wednesday night when they travel to Washington, D.C. for a matchup with the Georgetown Hoyas.

Video: Marquette Holds Off UConn Men 82-76 in OT

Welcome to Big East play where the play is physical and anything can happen.

Marquette's Junior Cadougan (5) reacts to his 3-pointer that tied the score at the end of regulation against Connecticut in their NCAA college basketball game, Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2013, in Milwaukee. Just when it looked like the UConn Huskies were going to win the game after a Ryan Boatright field goal to go up three with seconds to play, Junior Cadougan hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to tie it up for the Marquette Golden Eagles.

Marquette made a big three in overtime and held off the Huskies for an 82-76 win in front of 14,159 at the BMO Harris Bradley Center in Milwaukee, WI on New Year's Day.

The Huskies fall to 10-3 (0-1 Big East) while Marquette improves to 10-3 (1-0).

Overtime got off to a strange start as UConn won the tip and went down the court with Shabazz Napier putting up a layup that was called for goaltending on Marquette. But after the referees got together and talked, the goaltending call was wiped away as Napier had been going down the court the wrong way.

The referees admitted after the game that UConn should have been awarded the two points. But oh well, you live with what happened.

Omar Calhoun gave UConn the lead 71-69 with a three pointer but Vander Blue followed with a three and after a Huskies miss, Jamil Wilson made a layup. From there, it was a matter of making free throws for the Golden Eagles.

Napier led the way for the Huskies with game-high 29 points and eight rebounds while adding four assists. Boatright added 16 points and a game-high six assists. DeAndre Daniels chipped in with 11 points.

Davante Gardner and Cadpugan both led the way for the Golden Eagles with 18 points with Gardner adding six rebounds. Blue added 13 points while Wilson led them with seven rebounds to go along with his seven points.

Really tough loss for the Huskies who battled throughout this game. They were down 10 points twice in the second half and rallied. Then when it looked they had a win in their grasp, their hearts were broken by Cadougan.

While the loss is disheartening, you have to be proud of the way they played. They never gave up, a trait instilled by their head coach Kevin Ollie, who by the way was coaching in his first Big East game.

The Huskies will now get a week off to prepare for their next game. That will come on January 8th when they host the DePaul Blue Demons at Gampel Pavilion. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Video: UConn Women Shoot Down the Ducks, 95-51

UConn's Caroline Doty in action against Oregon at Matthew Knight Arena Monday afternoon.

After knocking off the No. 1 team in the Stanford Cardinal on Saturday, we had to hope there would be no let down on Monday afternoon by the UConn Huskies women's basketball team.

It's pretty safe to say there was no let down.

Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis led six Huskies in double figures with 19 points as they went on to an easy 95-51 win over the Oregon Ducks at Matthew Knight Arena in Eugene, OR.

The new No. 1 in the AP Poll (Coaches Poll comes out on Tuesday) Huskies improve to 12-0. The Ducks fall to 2-10.

KML also added five rebounds and four assists. Stefanie Dolson added 16 points, six rebounds and five assists. Caroline Doty had perhaps her best game in a UConn uniform with 14 points, 12 rebounds, seven assists, two blocks and four steals.

Kelly Faris chipped in with 13 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals while freshman Morgan Tuck and Moriah Jefferson both had 10 points.

The Ducks were led by Jillian Alleyne's 18 points and six rebounds. Devyn Galland added 13 points. Ariel Thomas matched Alleyne's team-high rebounds with six points to go along with just three points.

Early on it looked the blowout would happen as it did as the Huskies raced out to a 12-0 lead. But over time, the Ducks responded back later on with 13 straight points that cut UConn's lead to 19-13.

But then the Huskies turned things on and started to play better as they closed out the first half on a 35-11 run. It more of the same in the second half.

It was nice to see UConn keep up the momentum from Saturday's big win. They'll need that to carry over going forward. Especially with a big game coming up on Saturday.

That big game will be against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish as both teams will open up Big East play at Gampel Pavilion. Tip is scheduled for 4 p.m. and the game will be nationally televised on CBS.
