Afternoon Red Sox Delight – 4/8

Phil Hughes (L), John Lackey (R)

After losing their first six games on the road, the Boston Red Sox return home to the friendly confines of Fenway Park for a three-game set with the New York Yankees. And if you’re looking for a positive about the home opener, the Red Sox have won their last five straight home openers.

First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 p.m. and the game will be televised on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the Yankees television market, you can catch the game on YES. And if you don’t live in either market, you’re in luck as the MLB Network will also be televising the game. If you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to the game on the 2011 Red Sox Radio Network.

John Lackey looks to get the Red Sox their first win in his second start of the season. He took the loss against the Rangers after allowing nine runs in 3.2 innings of work. Lackey was 1-1 with a 3.20 ERA against the Yankees in three starts during the 2010 season. In his career, he has made 19 starts against the Yankees and is 4-6 with a 4.43 ERA.

Phil Hughes will look to keep the Red Sox 0-for-2011 in his second start of the season. Hughes took the loss against the Tigers on 4/3 when he allowed five runs in four innings. He made five appearances (four starts) against the Red Sox in 2010 and was 2-1 with a 3.60 ERA. In his career against the Red Sox, Hughes is 2-3 with a 4.97 ERA in 13 appearances (six starts). In five career appearances (two starts) at Fenway Park, Hughes is 2-1 with a 6.00 ERA.

Reyes DFA’d; Doubront to Boston

Well it turns out my speculation from last night was correct. Unfortunately, it wasn’t one of the two players I thought it was. But then again both Rich Hill and Hideki Okajima pitched in Pawtucket’s game last night.

Boston Red Sox's Dennys Reyes delivers to Tampa Bay Rays' Matt Joyce during the seventh inning of a spring training baseball game in Fort Myers, Fla. , Tuesday, March 22, 2011.According to Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe, the Boston Red Sox have designated Dennys Reyes for assignment. To take his place on the 25-man roster, they have recalled Felix Doubront from Triple-A Pawutcket.

Reyes appeared in four games, going 1.2 innings with a 16.20 ERA (1.2 IP/3 ER) allowing two hits, two walks with one strikeout.

Doubront missed part of spring training with some elbow issues. But after some rest and rehab, he got back on track and was scheduled to start the season as a starter in Pawtucket. Now he’ll be the only lefty in the Red Sox bullpen.

Aceves Heading To Boston; Albers to DL

Pitcher Alfredo Aceves #91 of the Boston Red Sox pitches against the New York Yankees during a Grapefruit League Spring Training Game at City of Palms Park on March 14, 2011 in Fort Myers, Florida.

It took only six games for someone from the Boston Red Sox to head to the disabled list. And for Alfredo Aceves, it means he may get a chance to pitch against his old team, the New York Yankees this weekend.

Earlier on Thursday night, Aceves was scratched from his start with the Pawtucket Red Sox prompting speculation that there would be a roster move with the big club. And now we know what that move will be.

According to Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe, the Red Sox will place Matt Albers on the disabled list and Aceves will take his place in the bullpen.

Ironically enough, Alber has been one of the better relievers during the opening six-game losing streak. In two innings of work, he hasn’t allowed a run and has walked two to go along with three strikeouts.

Now this is complete speculation on my part but it wouldn’t surprise me if we see Dennys Reyes getting designated for assignment or put on the disabled list with an “injury”. Reyes has pretty much stunk up the joint in his three outings so far this season. Rich Hill or Hideki Okajima would be candidates to replace him should something happen with Reyes.

UConn Men’s Victory Parade Set For April 17

STORRS, Conn. – Governor Dannel P. Malloy announced on Wednesday that the Hartford Business Improvement District will host a victory parade and rally on Sunday, April 17, to congratulate and honor the University of Connecticut Men’s Basketball Team for winning the National Championship Game of the 2011 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament.

The victory parade, which will begin and end at the State Capitol, will start at 3:00 p.m. on April 17 and wind around Bushnell Park, Main Street and Capitol Avenue. A victory rally with the coaches and players will take place on the north steps of the Capitol building immediately following the parade. Parade and rally organizers are relying on private funds to support both events.

“We’ve known for quite some time, but now the country knows, too – this is UConn Country. Fans of all ages from across Connecticut will come together and show the players the pride that we have in our championship-winning UConn men’s basketball team,” Governor Malloy said. “On April 17, we will show our support by cheering on the team from the parade route, wearing our blue and white Huskies gear, and celebrating the 2011 men’s championship team with a victory celebration in Hartford.”

The Governor added, “I want to thank the Hartford Business Improvement District for again hosting this event, organizing its sponsors, and allowing Connecticut residents to once again celebrate another national championship team from our state.”

The parade will begin at the State Capitol, travel north on Trinity Street, take a right on Jewell Street, turn left on Gold Street, take a right on Main Street, and finally turn right onto Capitol Avenue before returning to the State Capitol where the rally will be held.

Late Morning Red Sox Delight – 4/7

Jon Lester (L), Fausto Carmona (R)

The Boston Red Sox will try to salvage the finale of a three-game set  and a six-game road trip this afternoon with the Cleveland Indians at Progressive Field in Cleveland, OH.

Today’s first pitch is scheduled for 12:05 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the Indians television market, you can catch the game on STO. And if you don’t live in either market, you are in luck as the game will also be broadcast on the MLB Network. If you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to the game on the 2011 Red Sox Radio Network.

Jon Lester looks to put his April woes behind him and get the Red Sox their first victory of the season before heading home to face the New York Yankees. In his first start of 2011, Lester took a no decision after allowing five runs in 5.1 innings. He made two starts against the Indians in 2010 and was 0-1 with a 6.55 ERA (8 ER/11IP). Overall in his career, Lester has made eight starts against the Indians and is 3-1 with a 4.53 ERA. In four career starts at Progressive Field, Lester is 1-0 with a 6.85 ERA.

Fausto Carmona looks to rebound from a disastrous first start and will try to send the Red Sox home at 0-6. In that first start, he allowed 10 runs in just three innings of work. He made two starts against the Red Sox in 2010 and was 1-1 with a 2.08 ERA. In seven career appearances (five starts) against the Red Sox, he is 2-3 with a 4.25 ERA.
