Moore Wins Naismith Player of the Year Award for Second Time

Naismith Award

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Becoming the first ever two-time College and two-time Naismith High School Player of the Year, University of Connecticut Senior forward Maya Moore was named the 2011 Naismith College Women’s Player of the Year, the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced today. Moore edged Nneka Ogwumike (Stanford), Danielle Adams (Texas A&M) and Brittney Griner (Baylor) on the final ballot. She was recognized by Kathy Betty and Mary Brock of the Atlanta Tipoff Club and Kris Rinne of AT&T at the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Awards Banquet at the 2011 Women’s Final Four in Indianapolis.

In addition to the Naismith Trophy, Moore has also won national player of the year honors from the WBCA (Wade Trophy), the Associated Press, and the United States Basketball Writers Association. She was also honored as the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award for women’s basketball.

Moore was selected by the Atlanta Tipoff Club’s National Voting Academy, comprised of leading basketball journalists, coaches and administrators from around the country, in addition to fan voting via text message, which accounted for 25 percent of the final results – more than any other national college basketball award. The voting academy based its criteria on player performances throughout the season. The vote was tabulated and certified by the accounting firm of Habif, Arogeti & Wynne, LLP. HA&W is the largest independent accounting firm in Georgia and one of the top 50 firms in the United States.

“With this award, Maya’s basketball legacy becomes cemented alongside some of the best who have ever played the game,” said Eric Oberman, Executive Director of the Atlanta Tipoff Club. “She has accomplished something that no one else has done in the history of the Naismith awards, and the fact she’s an Atlantan means even more to our organization and our local community. We expect her to continue achieving great success as she furthers her playing career.”

Moore, the 2009 Naismith Trophy winner who also won consecutive national Naismith High School Girl’s Player of the Year awards in 2006 and 2007 at Collins Hill High School in Suwanee, Ga., has led the University of Connecticut Huskies to a 115-2 record over the past three seasons and led her team to the 2011 NCAA Div. I Women’s Basketball Final Four before falling to Notre Dame 63-72. The 2011 BIG EAST Player of the Year’s 3,036 career points are the most in UConn women’s history, and she also ranks second in made three-pointers (311) and rebounds (1,276).

“Maya Moore is a remarkable student-athlete and we’re honored to present her with the Naismith Trophy,” said David Christopher, chief marketing officer, AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets. “Fans demonstrated their support for Maya by texting in their votes and we’re pleased that we could provide the network to help make it happen. These votes accounted for 25 percent of the final Naismith Trophy tally.”

Other notable Naismith Trophy past winners include Cheryl Miller (USC), Candace Parker (Tennessee), Dawn Staley (Virginia) and last year’s winner, Tina Charles from UConn.

Afternoon Red Sox Delight – 4/3

Clay Buchholz (L), Matt Harrison (R)

After falling in the first two games of the 2011 season, the Boston Red Sox look to escape Texas with a win against the Texas Rangers at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington on Sunday afternoon.

First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 p.m. and the game will be carried on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the Rangers television market, you can watch the game on FOXSports Southwest. And if you don’t live in either market, you’re in luck as TBS will also be carrying the game. If you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to the game on the 2011 Red Sox Radio Network.

For the second straight day, a native Texan will take the mound for the Red Sox. This time, Terrry Francona will look to Clay Buchholz to salvage the series finale. Buchholz was 17-7 with a 2.33 ERA in 28 starts in 2010 for the Red Sox. He’s faced the Rangers three times in his career and is 1-2 with a 3.24 ERA. He’s made one start at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington where he allowed three runs in four innings. He faced the Rangers once in 2010 taking the loss despite striking out ten batters after allowing three runs in 6 2/3 innings.

Matt Harrison makes the start today for Ron Washington and is the only pitcher to be in the Rangers Opening Day rotation the last three years. He made 37 appearances (six starts) in 2010 and was 3-2 with a 4.71 ERA. He’s made four career appearances (two starts) against the Red Sox and is 1-0 with a 8.25 ERA (11 ER/12 IP).

Red Sox News & Notes – 4/3

Boston Red Sox starting pitcher John Lackey(notes) sits in the dugout after he was pulled from the game in the fourth inning of the baseball game against the Texas Rangers in Arlington, Texas, Saturday, April 2, 2011.

Do me a favor, step back from that ledge my friend. There’s really no need to be lining up at the Tobin Bridge just yet. It’s only two freaking games.

Sure they haven’t exactly been pretty and yes another starting pitcher got lit up but hitting the panic button at the two game mark is utterly redonkiculous.

Some questioned Boston Red Sox skipper Terry Francona when he announced that John Lackey would be his No. 2 starter to start the 2011 season. After all, you still have Josh Beckett and Clay Buchholz. But Francona felt that Lackey would be a better matchup against the Rangers with Beckett getting a start against the lowly Cleveland Indians.

Francona must not have looked at Lackey’s career stats at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.  In 16 starts there, Lackey was 6-5 with a 6.11 ERA. And now after last night’s 12-5 shellacking, Lackey is 6-6 with a 6.78 ERA.

It wasn’t pretty at all. Just like on Opening Day when Ian Kinsler connected for a leadoff homerun in the 1st inning against Jon Lester, he did the same against Lackey. And after David Ortiz gave the Red Sox the lead, Lackey gave it right back. And when Ortiz tied it up in the top half of the 4th, Lackey imploded in the 5th.

He did retire the first two batters he faced the inning and would have gotten out of it had Jacoby Ellsbury been able to make a spectacular diving catch on a ball of the bat of Yorvit Torrealba. Julio Borbon followed that with a triple to bring in Torrealba and then he issued a walk to Kinsler. Elvis Andrus hit an RBI double. The Red Sox decided to intentionally walk Josh Hamilton to load the bases up and that turned out to be a huge mistake.

Lackey left a pitch out over the plate to old friend Adrian Beltre and he sent it high into the Texas sky for a grand salami and the rout was on.

Dan Wheeler had a tough outing as he was roughed for two runs on four hits in 2/3 of an inning. Tim Wakefield should never be allowed to face Nelson Cruz as Cruz hit a solo home run off of him and is now 6-for-6 against Wake in his career. Dennys Reyes bounced back from his four pitch walk effort on opening day to retire the side in the 7th and Bobby Jenks was perfect in his Red Sox debut.

With his three RBIs, Ortiz now has 1,004 as a DH in his career and that tops the great Edgar Martinez for the most as a DH. Adrian Gonzalez continued to rake as he had another three hits and is now 5-for-9 in his first two games in a Red Sox uniform. Ellsbury also showed some power as he blasted a two-run homer.

Carl Crawford‘s rough start continued as he was 0-for-3 with a strikeout but he did finally get on base with a walk. Dustin Pedroia, Jed Lowrie and Kevin Youkilis had the other hits for the Red Sox.

The Red Sox will look to leave Texas with a win this afternoon. The game is scheduled to begin at 2:05 p.m.

Native Texan John Lackey will make his first start of the season for Terry Francona. Last year in 33 starts for the Red Sox, Lackey was 14-11 with a 4.40 ERA.  He has made 33 career starts against the Rangers, 32 as a member of the Los Angeles Angels, and is 11-12 with a 5.74 ERA. This will also be his seventh start where he opens his season against the Rangers and he is 1-3 with a 7.11 ERA.

Colby Lewis will be making his first start of the 2011 season for Ron Washington. In 32 starts last season, his first year in the big leagues since 2007, he was 12-13 with a 3.72 ERA.  He’s made eight career appearances (four starts) against the Red Sox and is 1-1 with a 3.12 ERA.
