It Sure Isn’t Pretty

Manager Terry Francona #47 of the Boston Red Sox watches the field be prepared prior to the game against the Cleveland Indians on April 6, 2011 at Progressive Field in Cleveland, Ohio.

Heading into Wednesday night’s game in Cleveland against the Indians, the Boston Red Sox are in a 0-4 hole to start the season.  Is it time to panic? No.  I’m not, Theo Epstein isn’t, neither is Terry Francona.  I’m a little concerned, as I am sure they are to some extent but I am far from seeking out the nearest bridge or high rise.

But with the exception of Adrian Gonzalez, Dustin Pedroia, David Ortiz, Matt Albers, Bobby Jenks, Dennys Reyes and Tim Wakefield the rest of the team hasn’t done a thing.  Granted teams go through slumps and as I’ve seen from some Boston media if this was say, June or July and they lost 4 straight it would be less noticeable.  But when you start the season that way you are looking at the potential for wide spread panic in the streets of Boston not seen since well Game 3 of the 2004 ALCS.

Looking at the hitting stats of the team two thirds of the starting lineup has failed to hit.  Jacoby Ellsbury is hitting .188; Carl Crawford .133; Kevin Youkilis .182; J.D. Drew .167, Jarrod Saltalamacchia .091 and Marco Scutaro is hitless.

Then thrown in the four bench guys and there is one hit between Darnell McDonald, Mike Cameron, Jed Lowrie and Jason Varitek and that belongs to Lowrie.  It also needs to be said that Tek has yet to get an AB this year but still.

To continue reading, click on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

You want to know what’s even uglier?  How about hitting with runners in scoring position (RISP) and runners left on base (LOB).  In the opening day loss to Texas they were 4 for 12 with RISP and had 5 LOB.  The next night in the massacre they were 0 for 11 with RISP and had 8 LOB. In the Sunday finale they were 1 for 5 with RISP and had 6 LOB and then Tuesday night in Cleveland they were 1 for 2 with RISP and had 5 LOB.  In four games that is 6 for 30 (.200) and 24 runners stranded.  Folks, that’s the population of a small hamlet in Vermont.

Then there’s the pitching.  Reyes (1.2 IP), Jenks and Albers (2 IP each) have been good all with ERA’s of 0.00.  Wakefield has been admirable and has done with what he’s been given and has an ERA of 4.50 in 2 IP.  After that, holy Hannah let’s look at the ERA’s.  The starters Josh Beckett 5.40; Jon Lester 8.44; Clay Buchholz 5.68 and John Lackey a whopping 22.09.  Who would have thought Daisuke Matsuzaka would be the teams stopper?

The bullpen has been just as bad.  Dan Wheeler 13.50 in 1.1 IP; Jonathan Papelbon 9.00 in 1 IP and Daniel Bard actually lowered his ERA last night to 21.60.

This team is better than this, we all know that.  Epstein and Francona and the staff know it too and no one is panicking yet.  But it would be nice to see the bats come alive the last two games in Cleveland so they don’t limp into the home opener Friday afternoon against New York still winless.  Then that has the potential to be ugly.

Afternoon Red Sox Delight – 4/6

Daisuke Matsuzaka (L), Mitch Talbot (R)

The Boston Red Sox look to end their four-game losing skid to start the 2011 in game two of a three-game set with the Cleveland Indians at Progressive Field in Cleveland, OH.

Tonight’s first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on NESN Plus in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the Indians television market, you can catch the game on STO. If you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to the game on the 2011 Red Sox Radio Network.

Daisuke Matsuzaka looks to cut the line down at the Tobin Bridge as the Red Sox search for their first win in 2011. He made 25 starts in 2010 and was 9-6 with a 4.69 ERA. He made two starts against the Indians in 2010 and was 2-0 with a 0.56 ERA (1 ER/16 IP). Overall in his career, he’s made five starts against the Indians and is 4-1 with a 2.34 ERA. He’s made two career starts at Progressive Field and is 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA (0 ER/16 IP).

Mitch Talbot will try to add more Red Sox fans to the line at the Tobin Bridge in his first start of 2011. In his rookie campaign during 2010, he made 28 starts and was 10-13 with a 4.41 ERA. He’s made two career appearances (one start) against the Red Sox in his career and is 0-0 with a 7.71 ERA (6 ER/7 IP).

Red Sox News & Notes – 4/6

Josh Beckett(notes) #19 of the Boston Red Sox pitches during the fourth inning during the second inning of the game against the Cleveland Indians at Progressive Field on April 5, 2011 in Cleveland, Ohio.

0-4? Seriously 0-4!!! This is definitely not the way any of us, including the Boston Red Sox themselves, figured they would start the season.

If history dictates anything, the Red Sox will be watching the postseason from their offseason homes, the golf course or even their vacations. But as we know with the Red Sox, the previous history means absolutely nothing to them.

Remember back to 2004 when you thought you’ll probably never see the Red Sox win a World Series in your lifetime., They went out broke an 86-year old “curse” that year. And just maybe when you thought you might never see it happen again, three years later the Red Sox were on top of the world with their second World Series title of the decade.

And doesn’t 04+07=11?

Terry Francona needs to something to light a collective fire under all of their asses. They faced Cleveland’s fourth starter in Josh Tomlin last night and managed just four hits against the Indians pitching staff. Four hits!!!! With this lineup, four hits should come in an inning not over an entire game.

I honestly didn’t think Josh Beckett pitched all that badly. He wasn’t great but he certainly didn’t suck it up. At least he didn’t join his other fellow starters in giving up a chicks dig the long ball. Beckett’s changeup was butt nasty last night but his fastball velocity wasn’t what we’re used to. But still there was enough difference in MPH in his changeup to make it almost impossible to get some wood on.

Beckett’s problem last night was his pitch count. He threw 106 pitches in only five innings of work. That’s definitely not efficiency at its finest. He allowed all three runs on five hits and four walks but did record four strikeouts, mostly on his changeup.

If you want a positive from the game, it was the bullpen.

Matt Albers, Bobby Jenks and Daniel Bard combined to pitch three hitless and scoreless innings. Albers and Jenks each walked one batter and struck out three. Bard didn’t walk anyone and had four strikeouts.

Afternoon Red Sox Delight – 4/5

Josh Beckett (L), Josh Tomlin (R)

After being swept out of Texas over the weekend, the Boston Red Sox head to Cleveland, Ohio where they’ll look to take out their frustrations against the Cleveland Indians in a three-game set beginning tonight at Progressive Field.

Tonight’s first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the Indians television market, you can catch the game on STO. If you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to the game on the 2011 Red Sox Radio Network.

Josh Beckett will try to right the ship for Terry Francona in his first start of the season. In 21 starts in 2010, Beckett was 6-6 with a 5.78 ERA. He made one start against the Indians last year and picked up the win after allowing one run in eight innings back on August 3rd. Overall in his career, he is 3-4 with a 5.56 ERA in seven starts against the Indians. He’s made two career starts at Progressive Field where he is 0-2 with a 6.94 ERA.

Josh Tomlin will make his start of the season for Indians skipper Manny Acta. In 12 starts during his rookie campaign in 2010, Tomlin was 6-4 with a 4.56 ERA. He faced the Red Sox once last year on August 5th and took the loss after allowing four runs in seven innings.

Red Sox News & Notes – 4/5

You’ll have to excuse us here at SOX & Dawgs today. It’s been mighty crazy around these parts with our UConn Huskies men’s basketball team winning the 2011 NCAA Championship last night. We weren’t around yesterday do to something that came up last minute but that doesn’t mean we’ve forgotten about the Boston Red Sox.

A fan waves a broom as others stand in the closing minutes of an MLB baseball game between the Boston Red Sox and the Texas Rangers on Sunday, April 3, 2011, in Arlington, Texas. The Rangers won 5-1, sweeping the Red Sox in the Rangers' weekend season opener. As you already know, the Boston Red Sox were swept out of Texas on Sunday afternoon. The pitchers seem to be homer happy in the fact that the Rangers bashed the ball like the Cerrano of old. But if you had the pleasure of listening to Boston sports fans yesterday, you would have thought it was the end of the world (maybe in 2012).

I heard many different things, the main one that new pitching coach Curt Young should be fired. So I ask you this. How is it his fault that pitchers left the pitches out over the plate? It’s not. To steal a word from tonight’s starter Josh Beckett, they simply didn’t “execute” their pitches.

Secondly, do you realize this is a 162-game marathon and not a three-game sprint?

Three games does not make a season and will probably have little impact on the final results other than three losses. How many times have we seen teams get out of the starting gate hot but only to fade as the season goes along? Right now the Baltimore Orioles are 4-0 and lead the AL East. Do you honestly believe they will finish the season in first place?

Yeah I didn’t think so either. Unless you’re an Orioles fan and I’m sure not all think that.

If the Red Sox had won the last game in Texas on Sunday, my best guess is that people would have still had something to complain about. It’s just the nature of being a Red Sox fan here in New England. But seriously though, it’s THREE GAMES!!!! RELAX will ya!!

Now tonight, we’ll hope that Beckett can find his form and right the ship for the Red Sox. Let’s just hope he doesn’t morph into 2006 Beckett and add to the total of home runs already given up by the Red Sox pitching staff this season.

We’ll be back later with the tonight’s lineups, batter/pitcher matchups and links from the day but for now, enjoy the overnight links by clicking on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.
