Brady Restructures Contract; Signs 3 year Extension

Tom Brady #12 of the New England Patriots celebrates a touchdown in the second quarter against the Miami Dolphins during the game at Gillette Stadium on December 30, 2012 in Foxboro, Massachusetts.

As first reported by Sports Illustrated football writer Peter King, New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and the team have restructured his existing contract and got a year extension in the deal.

The three year extension is said to worth $27 million but it gives the team an additional $15 million against the flat cap over the 2013 and 2014 seasons.  The new deal will keep Brady in Foxboro through the 2017 season when he turns 40.

The new pact calls for salaries of $7 million in 2015, $8 million in 2016 and $9 million in 2017 and a $3 million signing bonus.

While other quarterbacks have signed larger deal that end up hampering their teams at times against the cap Brady has always been willing to restructure so the team will remain competitive in his time there.

Among the teams free agents that may benefit include WR Wes Welker, CB Aqib Talib, WR Julian Edelman, RB Danny Woodhead and T Sebastian Vollmer.

Brady who is a three time Super Bowl Champion, two time Super Bowl MVP and two time league MVP now will have a cap number of $13.8 million in 2013; $14.8 million in 2014; $13 million in 2015; $14 million in 2016 and $15 million in 2017.

In the long run it’s a great deal for both Brady and the Patriots and the future.

Gigantic Sox and Dawgs 2013 MLB Preview – Day 2 – AL West

Welcome to the Gigantic Sox and Dawgs 2013 MLB preview.  Over the next few days you will get a team by team look at its key players, new faces, their potential MVP, Cy Young and Rookie of the Year candidates, their possible starting lineup and rotation as well as a quick summary.

2013 SOX & Dawgs AL West PreviewWe will also select a MVP candidate and Cy Young candidate for each team no matter what their predicted team outcome is.

This preview was sculpted over the off season with some mild tweaking as we went along prior to publication.  It comes from a culmination of reading many hours of baseball research.

I hope you enjoy this look at the upcoming season.  I know everyone will not agree with me and that’s fine put it in the comments or hit me up on Twitter or via email.  I can assure you I'll most likely have an argument for each and every objection that you could possibly raise.

Yesterday we looked at the NL West, today it’s the AL West.

American League West

The West division in the American League hasn’t seen the Angels contend in the last few seasons but 2013 seems to be a year where they can win the division and get deep into the post season.  Oakland should be able to build on a wonderful 2012, while this year is the year the Rangers continue to slide and do not make the playoffs.  Good news for Seattle is they won’t finish last this year that’s because Houston switches leagues and comes to AL West.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim1. Los Angeles – Manager Mike Scioscia (14th year)

The Angels once again jumped into the free agent market when owner Artie Moreno got itchy and decided he wanted to be involved.  Last year it was for 1B Albert Pujols, this time around Moreno went above his baseball executives and came back with OF Josh Hamilton. Los Angeles was looking for someone to compliment the middle of the order and now they have Hamilton who will certainly replace Torii Hunter, who signed with Detroit, in the field and at the plate.  The starting pitching is a bit iffy after Jared Weaver especially with C.J. Wilson coming off surgery on his elbow. The back of the rotation needs to be good Joe Blanton and Jason Vargas are only stop gap measures and Tommy Hanson is in his first AL season. Bullpen is a bit of concern with Ryan Madson returning post TJS but a solid 2-3-4-5 in the lineup, good defense and smart baseball will carry them.

Jered Weaver #36 of the Los Angeles Angels reacts after giving up a run in the fourth inning against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park on August 22, 2012 in Boston, Massachusetts. Home Field: Angel Stadium

Key Players: 1B Albert Pujols; OF Mike Trout, OF Josh Hamilton; P Jered Weaver; RP Ryan Madson

MVP Candidate: 1B Albert Pujols; RF Josh Hamilton; LF Mike Trout

Cy Young Candidate: P Jered Weaver

ROY Candidate: 2B/SS Andrew Romine

Key Additions: OF Josh Hamilton; P Tommy Hanson; RP Ryan Madson*; RP Jason Vargas; P Joe Blanton; INF Bill Hall

Possible lineup: Trout LF; Aybar SS; Pujols 1B; Hamilton RF; Trumbo DH; Kendrick 2B; Callaspo 3B; Ianetta C; Bourjos CF

Possible rotation: Weaver; Wilson; Hanson, Blanton, Vargas

*Closer Ryan Madson status is uncertain for the start of season and may start on DL.  In this case Ernesto Frieri would close games until his return.

Oakland Athletics2. Oakland – Manager Bob Melvin (3rd year/10th overall)

Last year it looked like Billy Beane was trading away the entire team and all he did was rebuild them into the AL West Champions for 2012.  The starting pitching is young and solid as is the bullpen of no-names.  The questions are can Yoenis Cespedes continue to improve in 2013 and can he get the protection he needs in the lineup from Josh Reddick and Brandon Moss who need to duplicate 2012 for this team to get back to the playoffs.

Yoenis Cespedes #52 of the Oakland Athletics hits a ground ball with the bases loaded scoring Cliff Pennington #2 of the Oakland Athletics (not pictured) in the bottom of the fourth inning giving the Oakland Athletics a 6-0 lead over the Boston Red Sox at O.co Coliseum on September 2, 2012 in Oakland, California. Home Field: O.com Coliseum

Key Players: RF Josh Reddick; LF Yoenis Cespedes; SS Hiroyuki Nakajima; P Jarrod Parker; P Brett Anderson

MVP Candidate: LF Yoenis Cespedes

Cy Young Candidate: P Brett Anderson

ROY Candidate: SS Hiroyuki Nakajima, P Dan Straily

Key Additions: SS Hiroyuki Nakajima; OF Chris Young; IF Andy Parrino; 3B Jefry Marte; C John Jaso; SS Jed Lowrie; RP Fernando Rodriguez; RP Hideki Okajima

Possible lineup: Crisp CF; Sizemore 2B; Cespedes LF; Moss 1B; Reddick RF; Donaldson 3B; Smith DH; Jaso C; Nakajima SS

Possible rotation*: Anderson; Parker; Milone; Griffin; Straily

* Expect one of the back end starters to lose his spot once Bartolo Colon returns from his 50-game PED suspension.

Texas Rangers3. Texas – Manager Ron Washington (7th year)

The Rangers made the playoffs for the third year in a row but barely and that streak should end this season.  After going to the World Series in 2010 and 2011 as AL West Champs they got into the tournament in 2012 as one of the two AL Wild Card teams and were promptly eliminated at home by Baltimore.  They have a good top third of a lineup but were weakened in the middle when Josh Hamilton left for Los Angeles. Yu Darvish needs to build on 2102 as the starting pitching is only average and the bullpen should be a raging concern other than closer Joe Nathan who is always solid.

Adrian Beltre #29 of the Texas Rangers field a ground ball and throws to first base for the out against the Oakland Athletics at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington on September 24, 2012 in Arlington, Texas. Home Field: Rangers Ballpark at Arlington

Possible lineup: Kinsler 2B; Andrus SS; Berkman DH; Beltre 3B; Cruz RF; Murphy LF; Pierszynski C; Moreland 1B; Martin CF

Possible rotation: Darvish; Holland; Harrison; Ogando; Perez

Seattle Mariners4. Seattle – Manager Eric Wedge (3rd year/10th overall)

The Mariners have to be grateful that the Houston Astros have moved from the NL Central to the AL West because it should give them another 10-12 wins and keep them out of the basement.  Mariners’ fans badly want some new ownership to give the franchise a boost much like Paul Allen did for the Seahawks. In order to generate more offense the team has also moved the fences in at Safeco Field. Until they show some of the big name free agents they are serious and want contend on a regular basis they will continue to languish at or near the bottom of the AL West.  Even with an elite starter in Felix Hernandez and closer Tom Wilhelmsen aren’t enough to save them right now. They are solid defensively but the worry is that they won’t score runs.  Don’t worry M’s fans help is on the way through your farm system you may have the best Top 5 prospects in the game.

Felix Hernandez #34 of the Seattle Mariners celebrates a win against the Minnesota Twins on August 27, 2012 at Target Field in Minneapolis, Minnesota.Home Field: Safeco Field

Key Players: CF Franklin Gutierrez; 1B Kendrys Morales; DH Jesus Montero; P Felix Hernandez; RP Tom Wilhelmsen

MVP Candidate: P Felix Hernandez

Cy Young Candidate: P Felix Hernandez

ROY Candidate: SP Erasmo Ramirez; C Mike Zunino; P Danny Hultzen

Key Additions: 1B Kendrys Morales; IN Robert Andino; OF/DH Jason Bay; LF Raul Ibanez; OF/1B Michael Morse; C Kelly Shoppach

Possible lineup: Ackley 2B;Gutierrez CF; Seager 3B; Morse LF; J. Montero DH; Morales 1B; C; Saunders RF; Shoppach C; Ryan SS

Possible rotation: Hernandez; Iwakuma; Beavan; Noesi; Ramirez

Houston Astros5. Houston – Manager Bo Porter (1st year)

The Astros changed uniforms and moved to AL West for 2013, there’s also a new manager and new league to lose a ton of games in this year as the ‘Stros will now be the whipping boys for the American League.  It’s not going to be pretty but then again it hasn’t been for the last 10 years in Houston.  The team has lost 213 games the last two seasons and you can look for another 100 losses this year.  The starting pitching has little MLB experience and they are very weak across the board in all phases, offense, defense, pitching and on the bench.

Jose Altuve #27 of the Houston Astros motions as he crosses home plate after hitting a home run in the fourth inning against the St. Louis Cardinals at Minute Maid Park on September 26, 2012 in Houston, Texas. Home Field: Minute Maid Park

Key Players: 2B Jose Altuve; LF J.D. Martinez; DH Carlos Pena; P Bud Norris; P Phil Humber

MVP Candidate: 2B Jose Altuve

Cy Young Candidate: P Bud Norris

ROY Candidate: 3B Matt Dominguez; 1B/OF Jonathan Singleton

Key Additions: Mgr Bo Porter; DH Carlos Pena; OF Che-Hsuan Lin; RP Josh Fields; P Phil Humber; P Erik Bedard; OF Rick Ankiel; 1B Chris Carter; P Brad Peacock

Possible lineup: Altuve 2B; Greene SS; Carter 1B; Pena DH; Maxwell CF; J.D. Martinez LF; Castro C; F. Martinez RF; Domiguez 3B

Gigantic Sox and Dawgs 2013 MLB Preview – Day 1 – NL West

Welcome to the Gigantic Sox and Dawgs 2013 MLB preview.  Over the next week you will get a team by team look at its key players, new faces, their potential MVP, Cy Young and Rookie of the Year candidates, their possible starting lineup and rotation as well as a quick summary.

It was a lot of work but a lot of fun compiling this preview and starting today we will take a look at the National League West.  The rest of the schedule follows with a different division being profiled each day and the final day will bring you the winners, award selections and a list of managers who have a lot to prove in 2013 if they want to be on the bench in 2014.

Tomorrow you will get the American League West preview followed by the NL Central, AL Central, NL East and AL East.

National League West

The National League West will once again see the Giants take the division flag come years end but will also see the Dodgers contend for the division title.  It will be the Giants pitching that will overcome the Dodgers hitting.  The Diamondbacks should also be in the picture at least until August while the Padres and Rockies expect to be on the outside looking in.

San Francisco Giants1. San Francisco – Manager Bruce Bochy (7th year/19th overall)

When you win two World Series titles in a three year span you should be the favorite for your division and that’s where I have the Giants.  Buster Posey may be the game’s best player but once again after him there is not a lot of pop in the line up although it’s possibly better than last year.  It will be the defense and the outstanding pitching, both the starters and bullpen, that propels them.  What has set them aside the last few years is the late season moves always seem to work out for the best even though they may have overpaid to retain two of those late season acquisitions in CF Angel Pagan and 2B Marco Scutaro.

Buster Posey #28 of the San Francisco Giants looks on against the Detroit Tigers during Game Four of the Major League Baseball World Series at Comerica Park on October 28, 2012 in Detroit, Michigan. Home Field: AT&T Park

Key Players: C Buster Posey; RF Hunter Pence; SS Brandon Crawford; SP Matt Cain; RP Sergio Romo

MVP Candidate: C Buster Posey

Cy Young Candidate: P Matt Cain

ROY Candidate: 1B/3B Conor Gillaspie

Key Additions: OF Andres Torres; RP Sandy Rosario; RP Chad Gaudin

Possible lineup: Pagan CF; Scutaro 2B; Sandoval 3B; Posey C; Pence RF; Belt 1B; Crawford SS; Blanco LF

Possible rotation: Cain; Bumgarner; Lincecum; Volgelsong; Zito

Los Angeles Dodgers2. Los Angeles – Manager Don Mattingly (3rd year)

New owners, the Guggenheim Group, came in with deep pockets and showed they weren’t afraid to spend money and now they have baseball’s largest payroll at this time.  They have a good lineup but could use a better option at third other than Luis Cruz or Juan Uribe.  Even though they lack a true closer and could possibly use an additional situational lefty in the pen it is expected that they will seriously challenge the Giants for the division.

Matt Kemp #27 of the Los Angeles Dodgers cewlebrates as he crosses home after hitting a solo home run in the second inning against the Arizona Diamondbacks on September 2, 2012 at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, CaliforniaHome Field: Dodger Stadium

Key Players: 1B Adrian Gonzalez; SS Hanley Ramirez; CF Matt Kemp; P Clayton Kershaw; P Chad Billingsley

MVP Candidate: 1B Adrian Gonzalez; CF Matt Kemp

Cy Young Candidate: P Clayton Kershaw

ROY Candidate: P Hyun-Jin Ryu

Key Additions: 2B/OF Skip Schumaker; P Zack Greinke; P Hyun-Jin Ryu; RP J.P. Howell; RP Rob Rasmussen; C Tim Federowicz

Possible lineup: Crawford* LF; M. Ellis 2B; Gonzalez 1B; Ramirez SS; Kemp CF; Ethier RF; Cruz 3B; A.J. Ellis C;

*Crawford may not be ready to play until early May after Tommy John surgery.  If that’s the case flip his spot with Either and Hairston will LF.

Possible rotation: Kershaw; Greinke; Beckett; Ryu; Harang**

**Billingsley is up in the air for 2013 after an elbow injury and Harang would be a candidate for his spot.

Arizona Diamondbacks3. Arizona – Manager Kirk Gibson (4th year)

The Arizona Diamondbacks are looking for some consistency they had too many mental lapses in 2012 and it cost them.  After making the playoffs in 2011 they failed to get back to the post season even with the additional wild card team in each league.  They have a young talented starting rotation and they did some overhauling of the roster again which included dealing Justin Upton to Atlanta but I don’t see them beating out the Giants or Dodgers for the division but they could hang in there for a wild card berth.  Look for rookie Adam Eaton to be an impact player on offense and defense.

Ian Kennedy #31 of the Arizona Diamondbacks pitches against the San Francisco Giants at AT&T Park on May 30, 2012 in San Francisco, California. Home Field: Chase Field

Key Players: 3B Martin Prado; 1B Paul Goldschmidt; CF Adam Eaton; P Ian Kennedy; P J.J. Putz

MVP Candidate: 3B Martin Prado

Cy Young Candidate: P Ian Kennedy

ROY Candidate: CF Adam Eaton and P Tyler Skaggs

Key Additions: OF Cody Ross; 3B Eric Chavez; P Brandon McCarthy; SS Cliff Pennington; RP Heath Bell; 1B/OF Eric Hinske; 3B Martin Prado; P Randall Delgado; RP Matt Reynolds

Possible lineup: Eaton CF; Hill 2B; M. Montero C; Kubel LF; Goldschmidt 1B; Prado 3B; Ross RF; Pennington SS

Possible rotation: Kennedy; McCarthy; Cahill; Miley; Delgado

Colorado Rockies4. Colorado – Manager Walt Weiss (1st year)

The Rockies floundered in 2012 after a major overhaul of the major league roster and that cost some people their jobs including manager Jim Tracy who has been replaced by Walt Weiss who was coaching high school baseball and Colorado only gave him only a one-year contract.  They’re going to have to fight to stay out of the cellar in 2013, they should score some runs especially at Coors Field but it is the pitching that will doom them.  The starters have a history of injuries and giving up tons of runs, the bullpen was overworked in 2012 and that needs to change.

Carlos Gonzalez #5 of the Colorado Rockies hits a homerun against the San Diego Padres during an MLB game on July 20, 2012 in San Diego, California. Players of the Colorodo Rockies are wearing 7-20 eye black stickers in mourning over the Aurora, Colorado shootings. Home Field: Coors Field

Key Players: LF Carlos Gonzalez; SS Troy Tulowitzki; RF Michael Cuddyer; P Jorge De La Rosa; P Rafael Betancourt

MVP Candidate: LF Carlos Gonzalez

Cy Young Candidate: P Jorge De La Rosa

ROY Candidate: RP Daniel Rosenbaum

Key Additions: Mgr Walt Weiss; RP Daniel Rosenbaum; 3B Ryan Wheeler; OF Ken Williams; RP Wilton Lopez

Possible lineup: Fowler CF; Rutledge 2B; Gonzalez LF; Tulowitzki SS; Cuddyer RF; Helton 1B; Rosario C; Nelson 3B

Possible rotation: De La Rosa; Chacin; Pomerantz; Nicasio; Francis

San Diego Padres5. San Diego – Manager Bud Black (7th year)

The Padres should once again struggle to get to .500 this season and they’ll have trouble scoring runs even with the fences at Petco moved in.  Any success that San Diego has will most likely come if the pitching holds up but the staff as a whole lack depth due to injuries and resources.  They’re defense is poor except on the infield corners where they are anchored by Chase Headley and Yonder Alonso. They will miss C Yasmani Grandal who is suspended 50 games for PEDs and was expected to play a part this season.

Chase Headley #7 of the San Diego Padres watches the flight of his grand slam hit during the seventh inning of a baseball game against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Petco Park on September 9, 2012 in San Diego, California. Home Field: Petco Park

Key Players: 3B Chase Headley; 1B Yonder Alonso; LF Carlos Quentin; P Edinson Volquez; RP Huston Street

MVP Candidate: RF Carlos Quentin

Cy Young Candidate: P Edinson Volquez

ROY Candidate: P Casey Kelly

Key Additions: P Jason Marquis; P Tyson Ross; RP Wilfredo Boscan; IF Cody Ransom; P Freddy Garcia

Possible lineup: Cabrera SS; Forsythe 2B; Headley 3B; Quentin LF; Alonso 1B; Denorfia RF; Maybin CF; Hudley C

Possible rotation: Volquez; Richard; Marquis; Stults; T. Ross

Parcells among Pro Football Hall of Fame Inductees

Bill Parcells as head coach of the New England Patriots

The man they call “The Big Tuna” is finally getting what he deserves, a seat at the table of the Pro Football Hall of Fame in after a life of coaching the sport he loves.

Parcells who played football at Wichita State was picked in the 7th round of the 1964 NFL Draft but never played a game as a professional.  That football season he started his coaching career at Hastings as the linebackers’ coach.  The following season he would go back to his alma mater, Wichita State, and coach linebackers there too.

From 1966-69 he spent time coaching linebackers and being the defensive coordinator at Army in West Point NY where he came in contact with an influential basketball coach and a basketball player who one day would become one of the greatest coaches in the game himself.  Friends for life Parcells now shares his achievement with those men, both Basketball Hall of Fame members, Bobby Knight and Mike Krzyzewski.

The 1970’s saw Parcells stay in the college game as linebackers’ coach at Florida State (1970-72), Vanderbilt (1973-74) and Texas Tech (1975-77 before being named the head coach at the Air Force Academy in 1978.

His stay in Colorado would only last one season as the NFL and the New York Giants came calling and he took over as linebacker coach in 1979 but he would resign before the season started an take a job with a land ddevelopment company in Colorado.  But he was unhappy with his new profession and in 1980 went to New England as linebackers’ coach.  After one year, he would return to the Giants as the defensive coordinator.  In 1983 he would be named the head coach when Ray Perkins left to become the head coach at the University of Alabama.

It wasn’t always sunshine and roses for Parcells as those early years in the Meadowlands were about building a team which he did as the New York Giants won two Super Bowls under his watch.  They defeated the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXI and the Buffalo Bills in Super Bowl XXV.

It would be after that second Super Bowl victory that Parcells would step away from coaching the game and enter his first of several forays into the World of Television when he became a NFL analyst for NBC.

To continue reading, please click on the continue reading button below if you're on the home page.

Three years later Parcells would get the itch to coach again and this time he would go back to Foxboro and take over a poor Patriots team with questionable ownership.  In four seasons and with a new owner he would turn the team around by drafting QB Drew Bledsoe and lead them to Super Bowl XXXI where they would lose to the Green Bay Packers.  The next day he was gone, off to the New York Jets because he wasn’t allowed to buy the groceries.   Parcells and his ego wanted total football autonomy and Robert Kraft wouldn’t give it to him, so he left for some one who would.

After leaving the Patriots, his Jets teams would contend and get to an AFC Championship game but Parcells would never again get to another Super Bowl.  After stepping down from his post with the Jets as General Manager in 2000 he would once again turn to television taking a studio job with Bristol CT based ESPN.

In 2003 he would once again get an urge to coach and he ever took over the Dallas Cowboys for four seasons under his longtime friend Jerry Jones.  It was there in the Big D that Parcells would reunite with Bledsoe in an effort to get back to another title game but father time was running out on Drew.  He wasn’t the same guy he was in Foxboro or even early in Buffalo and he was replaced by a young Tony Romo.

The last game Parcells would coach the Cowboys had a chance to win.  It was a playoff game in Seattle, Romo was holding for a field goal and botched the snap and run for the goal line only to get crushed and get stopped short.

That was the end of the line for “The Big Tuna” as far as coaching but it was an incredible ride.  In 27 years as a NFL coach he would win two Super Bowls with an iconic NFL franchise, take a different team to a third Super Bowl and go to a 4th conference championship game with a third team.

In late 2007 he would take over the Miami Dolphins as Executive Vice President of Football Operations until he resigned in 2010.  He currently works for ESPN.

Parcells coached some great players, Lawrence Taylor, Phil Simms, Drew Bledsoe, Andre Tippet, Keyshawn Johnson, Vinnie Testaverde and many others.  He would have a regular season record of 172-130-1 and go 11-8 in the post season for a overall record of 183-138-1 (.570) only ten men in the game have won more games the Parcells, ever.

He was a two-time AP NFL Coach of the Year (1986,1994), The Sporting News NFL Coach of the Year (1986), Pro Football Weekly NFL Coach of the Year (1994,1996) and named to the NFL’s 1990’s All-Decade Team.

Parcells is also known for spawning his coaching tree as many significant coaches in the game have worked under Parcells.  Among them Bill Belichick, Charlie Weis, Romeo Crennel, Tom McLoughlin, Sean Payton, Tony Sparano, Ray Handley, Chris Palmer, Al Groh and Eric Mangini.

The man has left a wonderful football legacy and I am sure the Kraft family will celebrate it, as he was extremely significant to the development of the New England Patriots as we know them today.

If it weren’t for Parcells, Bledsoe and Kraft there would be no New England Patriots they were candidates for relocation to St. Louis.  He and his team saved football in New England there’s no other way to put it.  For that alone he deserves a special place in football history but it’s great to see the entire body of work will be represented forever in Canton.

Putting a Wrap on the 2012 NFL Season

Quarterback Colin Kaepernick #7 of the San Francisco 49ers during the NFL game against the Arizona Cardinals at the University of Phoenix Stadium on December 11, 2011 in Glendale, Arizona

I thought it might be interesting as we put a wrap on the NFL for another year that we play a little game of “Did you know…”.

This was the 40th anniversary year of the 1972 Miami Dolphins undefeated season in which they finished 17-0 and won Super Bowl VII beating the Washington Redskins 14-7.

Tennessee Titans QB Jake Locker was drafted to play baseball by the Los Angeles Dodgers, not once (2006 Round 40) but twice (2009 Round 5).

The Arizona Cardinals have won their last three season openers (2010-12).

Baltimore Ravens LB Ray Lewis is the only player in NFL history to have a 40 sack and 30 interception career and that the only other player in the NFL history to have a 30/30 career is former New England Patriots S Rodney Harrison.

The last time the Buffalo Bills were in the playoffs the lost in the “Music City Miracle” to the Tennessee Titans.

The Jacksonville Jaguars, Cleveland Browns, Houston Texans and Detroit Lions are the only four current NFL teams to have never played in a Super Bowl.

The Seattle Seahawks are the only NFL team to have never worn their white jersey at home.

Denver Broncos QB Peyton Manning is the only 4-time winner of the NFL MVP Award.

That Philadelphia Eagles announcer Merril Reese is the most tenured announcer with one team as he enters his 37th season in 2013.

That the Thanksgiving night butt fumble by New York Jets Mark Sanchez may just be the funniest thing I have ever seen happen on the field of play.

The Rams franchise has won three championships and each occurred when the team called a different city home.  They won the Super Bowl as the St. Louis Rams (1999), and NFL titles as the Los Angeles Rams (1951) and Cleveland Rams (1945).

Buffalo DT Alex Carrington had two blocked field goals in 2012 and that the team record is 3 in one season by DE Bruce Smith in 1996.

San Francisco QB Colin Kaepernick has the two longest runs by a QB in Niners history both were for 50 yards breaking Steve Yong’s record 49-yard run.

Bill Belichick is one of five head coaches in NFL history whose father (Steve Belichick) played in the league.  The others are former Kansas City head coach Todd Haley (Dick Haley), former San Francisco head coach Mike Nolan (Dick Nolan), former Cincinnati head coach David Shula (Don Shula) and former NY Jets head coach Joe Walton (Frank Walton).

QB Ryan Tannehill set the Miami rookie record for passing yards (3,294) when he passed Dan Marino (2,210).  He was the first rookie QB to start a season opener and all 16 regular season games in Dolphins history.

In response to the horrific shooting that took place at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT. on Dec. 14, the Houston Texans pledged to donate the proceeds from the team’s gameday silent auction. Texans owner Bob McNair pledged to match every dollar raised at the auction, while Texans players and coaches also contributed to the fund and the team was able to donate more than $70,000.

In The Red Zone – January 22

In The Red Zone

How My Predictions Worked Out

Before the season started I predicted that the Patriots would finish 12-4, with identical 6-2 records and home and on the road.  They would go 5-1 in the division, 9-3 in the conference and 3-1 against the NFC West.  I had road home losses to Buffalo and Houston and road losses to Baltimore and Seattle.

Officially the New England Patriots did indeed finish 12-4 in 2012.  They even had identical 6-2 records at Gillette and on the road.  They would go 6-0 in their division, 11-1 in the conference and 1-3 against the NFC West.  Their home losses were to Arizona and San Francisco and the road losses were to Baltimore and Seattle.

Too bad I wasn’t as accurate in picking games against the spread.  This season including the playoffs I was absolutely brutal picking correctly only 5 times while I would have lost money 13 times.  Jimmy the Greek was better when he was drunk, I wish I was drunk but alas I was stone cold sober.  Luckily if you’re a guy who loves to bet the total or over/under I got that correct 12 times out of 18 and much better percentage.

As for the playoffs the Patriots finished as the #2 seed, I predicted them as the #5 coming in second in the division to Buffalo.  I think I may actually have been drunk when I did that or at least I hope I was.

I had them going 1-1 in the post season winning Wild Card week and losing in the divisional round.  As we know they earned a bye this season and won in the Divisional round and lost in the AFC Championship Game.

All in all they finished 13-5 just as I said they would.

Looking At 2013

With 2012 officially in the books we have to look ahead to the 2013 NFL season and see what changes the Patriots will make in the roster.

Where do I see changes?  On offense most likely in the wide receiver’s corps, Brandon Lloyd stays but Deion Branch probably will not be back and Kamar Aiken and Matthew Slater are not the teams 4th and 5th wideouts.  Slater will stay because he means too much to them on special teams.

The biggest monkey in the room is Wes Welker’s contract.  He is currently on the franchise tag and if they tag him again he gets an additional 20% which puts him over $11 million for one season.  Bill Belichick is highly unlikely to pay him that, it goes back to value for the position.  Welker wants a long-term deal likely in the 3-year range and he wants to get paid.  My gut feeling is New England will let him test the market to see what offers he can get.  If that happens he is as good as gone.  I hope I am wrong.

In the tight end grouping Obviously Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez return the question is whether or not Daniel Fells and Mike Hoomanawanui will too.

On the offensive line the starters are solid, the team was very smart with making Ryan Wendell the starting center.  They need to see some more development out of Marcus Cannon and Markus Zusevics.  Other than that I expect to see some turnover among Nick McDonald and Donald Thomas.

The quarterbacks and the running backs should remain untouched, as should the special teamers LS Danny Aiken, K Stephen Gostkowski and P Zoltan Mesko.

Defensively they continue to need some pash rush help, Chandler Jones had a good first year but he lost time and effectiveness due to ankle injuries.  With a full, healthy season I expect more out of him in the sack department.  I’d like to see more out of Justin Francis and Jake Bequette moving forward.  I’m not sure if Trevor Scott returns in 2013, when he played he was fairly productive.  Also Jermaine Cunningham needs to continue to mature and play up to his potential.  He is entering his fourth season and time is running out on him.  The middle of the line remains stout and should be untouched with Vince Wilfork, Brandon Deaderick and Kyle Love forming a nice run stopping trio.

The three starting linebackers are solid and all have Pro Bowl potential.  It’s the bottom three in depth chart where we will see change.  Niko Koutouvides, Tracy White and Mike Rivera all made solid special teams contributions but saw very little time on defense.  Between the three they made 13 tackles on defense in limited action with White having 10 of them.  Expect some change their in at least two of the positions.  If you get a push rushing end you have the option of moving Rob Ninkovich back to linebacker.

Now we get to the secondary.  Since they acquired Aqib Talib the defensive backfield started to gel.  They need to sign Talib who will be a free agent.  Alfonzo Dennard got better as the season went on, Devin McCourty excelled after moving to safety and Steve Gregory was a nice pick up.  My feeling is that Kyle Arrington, Patrick Chung and Derrick Martin won’t be in Foxboro to start the season and that guys like Nate Ebner, Tavon Wilson, Marquise Cole, Malcolm Williams continue to grow and play a part in 2013.

By my projections that will leave the potential for 12-14 roster changes next season.  Now is the time for the staff to excel and make out their free agent and draft boards and try to return to the Super Bowl for the 8th time next season.

News and Notes

According to the team QB Tom Brady, G Logan Mankins, WR Wes Welker and DT Vince Wilfork have decided against playing in the Pro Bowl this weekend.

The Patriots also announced that they have signed some players to future contracts.  Future contracts are used on players who have expiring contracts and are on your practice squad at the end of the season or players who are not on the active roster of any team.  It allows these players to be able to take part in OTA’s with the team.  Signing deals were DL Tracy Robinson, WR Jeremy Ebert, RB James Develin, LB Jeff Tarpinian and WR Andre Holmes.  They also have QB Mike Kafka and DE Marcus Benard under future contracts for next season.

Ravens beat Patriots, Harbaugh Brothers Face Off in Super Bowl XLVII

Head coach John Harbaugh of the Baltimore Ravens hugs head coach Bill Belichick of the New England Patriots after winning the 2013 AFC Championship game at Gillette Stadium on January 20, 2013 in Foxboro, Massachusetts.

The AFC Championship Game between the New England Patriots and the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, MA was a series of peaks and valleys.  In the end, there were more valleys and a disappointing 28-13 loss to end the season.

At times it would seem the Patriots offense would be peaking and they’d start moving the ball only to bottom out and have a drive stalled with incomplete passes or failed red zone opportunities.

Then it would seem as it the Patriots defense would peak and be playing aggressive only to turn around and start to get picked apart by Baltimore QB Joe Flacco.

For most of the afternoon the game could have gone either way but there was a huge momentum shift late in the third quarter and early in the 4th quarter that gave the Ravens a 21-13 lead after trailing 13-7 at the half.

In a period of 10:01 on the game clock the Ravens scored 21 unanswered points and pulled away from the Patriots while building a 28-13 lead on three Flacco TD passes.  Two went to All-World WR Anquan Bolden, who size and strength just proved too much for the overmatched New England secondary.  And the third went to TE Dennis Pitta who killed New England most of the afternoon with little shake routes over the middle.  Flacco kept finding him and the Ravens kept chipping away at the Patriots defense.

The defense was severely hampered when CB Aqib Talib came up lame with a pulled hamstring about midway through the first quarter.  It severely changed the way defense was able to cover the Baltimore receivers, especially Bolden.  With Talib on the field he matches up very well with guys like Bolden but it doesn’t help when he can’t get on the field.

As for the offense they struggled mightily, especially in the red zone coming away with two field goals and a touchdown in three first half tries.  There was also some sketchy clock management in the closing seconds of the half.  If Tom Brady had called time out after he slide he had 17 seconds and at least two shots at points, maybe three.  But he decided he wanted to try to save the time out and spike the ball and ended up running the clock to :04 seconds and forcing the field goal opportunity as a last ditch chance for points.

The end of the football season always leaves me a bit melancholy compared to other sports, it just seems to short.  One day a week for four maybe five months if you’re lucky and then it’s gone, especially in a one and done playoff situation.

The team was good this year, not great.  At times they played both above and below the expectations of the fans and themselves. While 2013 looks promising we also have to realize that next preseason Brady turns 36 and the window closes a little more not only on his career but possibly championship opportunities in Foxboro.

As they said in “Goodfellas” when they tell Jimmy they had to whack Tommy, “well that’s that, and there wasn’t anything we could do about it.”

New England has the 4th highest winning percentage (.600) in the post season of teams having played a minimum of 15 games.  Only Pittsburgh (.611), Green Bay (.625) and Baltimore (.632) have higher winning percentages.

Since 2001 the Patriots have secured a bye week 7 times.  It is the highest total in the NFL in that time span.  Chicago and Pittsburgh have done it 4 times each since 2001.

This is the third time in team history that the Patriots have played in back-to-back Conference Championship Games (2003-04, 2006-07 and 2011-12).

New England is 4-0 in Conference Championship Games played in Foxboro (3-0 in Gillette Stadium).

The Patriots 9 Conference Championship appearances are 5th most in the Super Bowl era.  They trail only Oakland (11), San Francisco (14), Dallas (14) and Pittsburgh (15).

In addition to Baltimore/New England (2011-12) and Cleveland/Denver (1986-87) the other back-to-back AFC Conference Championship Games are Pittsburgh/Houston (1978-79) and Oakland/Pittsburgh (1974-76).

With a win on Sunday the Patriots will advance to their 8th Super Bowl it would tie them for the most all-time with Dallas (5-3) and Pittsburgh (6-2).

With a win on Sunday New England would return to the Super Bowl for the 2nd consecutive season.  They’d be the 8th team to return after losing the previous season.  The previous 7 returning teams are 2-5.

NHL Needs to Realign

Evander Kane

When the Atlanta Thrashers were sold and relocated to Winnipeg and became the second version of the Jets the NHL left them in the Southeast Division for the 2011-12 season because the schedule was already done and it was too late to re-do.

They were supposed to move for this season and a realignment plan was drawn up and it was rejected.  Then along came the lockout and all the CBA stuff and low and behold the Winnipeg Jets are still in the Southeast Division playing the Washington Capitals, Tampa Bay Lightning, Carolina Hurricanes and Florida Panthers on a regular basis.  There’s no excuse or reason for this.

If you break out your map of North America there is no way Winnipeg is close to any of those cities.  So I looked at two ways of realignment.  One that is very close to the divisions we have now and one that is much more radical.  Both are based on geography.

Currently the NHL looks like this:

Eastern Conference Western Conference
Northeast Division Central Division
Boston Chicago
Montreal Detroit
Ottawa Nashville
Buffalo St. Louis
Toronto Columbus
Atlantic Division Northwest Division
New York Rangers Calgary
New York Islanders Colorado
New Jersey Edmonton
Philadelphia Vancouver
Pittsburgh Minnesota
Southeast Division Pacific Division
Washington San Jose
Carolina Los Angeles
Tampa Bay Anaheim
Florida Phoenix
Winnipeg Dallas

To see the realignment proposals, please click on the continue reading button below if you're on the home page.

Realignment Proposal A:

Eastern Conference Western Conference
Northeast Division Central Division
Boston Chicago
Montreal Detroit
Ottawa Minnesota
Buffalo St. Louis
Toronto Columbus
Atlantic Division Northwest Division
New York Rangers Calgary
New York Islanders Colorado
New Jersey Edmonton
Philadelphia Vancouver
Pittsburgh Winnipeg
Southeast Division Pacific Division
Washington San Jose
Carolina Los Angeles
Tampa Bay Anaheim
Florida Phoenix
Nashville Dallas

  • Nashville moves from the Central Division in the Western Conference to the Southeast Division in the Eastern Conference.
  • Winnipeg moves from the Southeast Division in the Eastern Conference to the Northwest Division in the Western Conference.
  • Minnesota stays in the Western Conference but changes from the Northwest Division to the Central Division.

Proposal A doesn’t take much effort and there’s very little involvement from other teams.  It keeps the four western Canadian teams together, moves Nashville into their true geographic alignment as it does for Minnesota.

Realignment Proposal B:

Eastern Conference Western Conference
Northeast Division Central Division
Boston Chicago
Montreal Detroit
Ottawa Columbus
Buffalo Toronto
Pittsburgh St. Louis
Atlantic Division Northwest Division
New York Rangers Calgary
New York Islanders Colorado
New Jersey Edmonton
Philadelphia Winnipeg
Washington Minnesota
Southeast Division Pacific Division
Florida San Jose
Carolina Los Angeles
Tampa Bay Anaheim
Dallas Phoenix
Nashville Vancouver

  • Pittsburgh stays in the Eastern Conference and moves from the Atlantic Division to the Northeast Division.
  • Washington stays in the Eastern Conference and moves from the Southeast Division to Atlantic Division.
  • Nashville moves from the Central Division in the Western Conference to the Southeast Division in the Eastern Conference.
  • Dallas moves from the Pacific Division in the Western Conference to the Southeast Division in the Eastern Conference.
  • Toronto moves from the Northeast Division in the Eastern Conference to the Central Division in the Western Conference.
  • Winnipeg moves from the Southeast Division in the Eastern Conference to the Northwest Division in the Western Conference.
  • Vancouver stays in the Western Conference but would change divisions from the Northwest to the Pacific.

Realignment Proposal B is a bit more radical with more teams moving.  It would make Dallas, Nashville, Toronto and Winnipeg flip conferences in order to align the teams up geographically.  Washington would play with the more territorial rivalries of Philadelphia, New Jersey and the New York’s.  While Vancouver would play less Canadian road games for more in the Western United States.

So if you had to pick which realignment plan do you like best?  Leave your thoughts in the comments or tweet me.

In The Red Zone – January 15

In the Red Zone

Effort Gets Your Everywhere

Do you remember your parents telling you I wish would you tried harder?  I do.  There were things I excelled at like sports and remembering my favorite player’s statistics.  While other things like my chores needed more effort.

Well it may be safe to say that Devin McCourty’s and Kyle Arrington’s parents and coaches have never had to ask for extra effort after watching the way they ran down the Houston Texans Danieal Manning on Sunday.

If you didn’t pay attention to the replay or get to see an overhead coach’s view what McCourty and Arrington did was pretty special and it doesn’t happen every day.

Manning, who is no slouch in the speed department, took the kickoff 6 yards deep in the end zone and ran it out.  He was almost immediately over run my McCourty, Arrington and Jackie Slater and Manning was in all purposes ticketed for the end zone.

But what happened was Arrington took one angle coming across the field, while McCourty ran straight down field.  Arrington who had taken the angle most likely would have gotten to Manning as well but when he saw McCourty he pulled up so he wouldn’t cut him off and next thing you know McCourty has him from behind and he is down at the 12 yard line.

Granted the Patriots gave up a 94 yard kick off return but there was no touchdown scored as a result of the kickoff.

Now it was up to the defense.

Arian Foster ran the ball to the 9-yard line on first down.  Then on 2nd down Matt Schaub went to J Casey at the goal line but the pass was dropped.  On 3rd and 7 Schaub over threw All-World WR Andre Johnson in the back of the endzone and the Patriots defense escaped by only allowing a field goal.

That few minutes of effort by the defense and McCourty and Arrington set the tone for the game.  You could see from the outset that with that effort the Patriots wanted it more than the Texans.  From that point on I had no doubt that New England would win.

It’s like your parents told you it’s all in the effort.

News and Notes

According to sources, TE Rob Gronkowski re-fractured his arm and will need more surgery he is out for the remainder of the playoffs.

RB Danny Woodhead hurt his thumb early in the first quarter he never returned but could have according to Bill Belichick.  He will get looked at again during the week but at this time he is expected to be able to play on Sunday against Baltimore.

The Patriots have re-hired former WR’s coach Brian Daboll.  He had left to go to the jets with Eric Mangini in 2006 to be the QB’s coach.  He also has been with the Dolphins, Browns and Chiefs as an offensive coordinator.  He will join the staff in a capacity similar to Josh McDaniels last year.
