Byron Jones Sees UConn Career End Early

#16 Byron Jones looks over to the UConn Huskies sideline for a play call against the Stony Brook Seawolves at Rentschler Field on September 6, 2013.

New Britain, CT’s Byron Jones‘ UConn career wasn’t supposed to end like this. It was to finish up with him and his UConn Huskies football teammates walking off the field with a win in a bowl game.

While the latter won’t most likely happen anyways, Thursday night in Greenville, NC will be the last time Jones will have played in a college football game.

Jones, one of four UConn captains, got some bad news on Friday as the shoulder injury he was nursing and reaggravated during the loss to East Carolina Thursday night, will require season ending surgery as announced by UConn head coach Bob Diaco during his postgame teleconference on Friday.

“Byron was playing through a small issue there,” Diaco said. “That, then exacerbated himself last night (Thursday) to the point that it needs to be addressed. If it doesn’t get addressed it will be something else. Right now, an isolated thing that needs to be fixed.”

The good news part is that this in no way will affect him as he goes forward with his NFL dream once the shoulder heals.

“He’s very highly thought of,” Diaco said. “Executives that are in the building think highly of him. This will help him from a time frame standpoint.”

“He will be full speed, not good as new, better than new when he has a time to show his wears.”

Jones is projected to be drafted around the third or fourth round in the 2015 NFL Draft. He has UConn’s only two interceptions of the season, one of which came during Thursday night’s game. The other was a 70 yard interception returned for a touchdown against South Florida in September.

NOTES: UConn did get some good news on the injury front as WR Geremy Davis, who missed the second half, is day-to-day with an ankle sprain. RB Arkeel Newsome was cleared to play in Thursday night’s game after suffering a non-football related lower leg injury. He had not practiced all week which is why he saw only one series in the game. LB Junior Joseph didn’t make the trip to Greenville, NC so that he could tend to some academic stuff back in Storrs.

Devils Dominate Wolf Pack In 7-3 Win

By Zachary Grenier

Hartford, CT, October 24, 2014 – Ben Thomson and Mike Sislo scored two goals apiece, and Joe Whitney and Scott Timmins both had a goal and an assist, to lead the Albany Devils to a 7-3 win over the Hartford Wolf Pack Friday night at the XL Center.

Hartford Wolf PackThe loss was the first regulation defeat in five games on the season for the Wolf Pack (3-1-1-0, 7 pts.), who got goals from Marek Hrivik, Chris Bourque and J.T. Miller, and two assists from Jesper Fast.

The Wolf Pack were in an early deficit after Albany’s Thomson deflected a Dan Kelly slap shot from the left point, to put the Pack down 1-0 just 4:14 into the game.

“We’ve definitely talked about having better starts and having better first periods and I think we play better as the game goes on,” said Hartford assistant captain Ryan Bourque.

Hartford’s Hrivik tied the game up less than two minutes later, at 5:53, with a shorthanded goal, a slap shot from the right faceoff circle after Hrivik received a pass from Joey Crabb on a two on one.

With 8:43 left in the first Albany’s Paul Thompson, the AHL’s leading goal-scorer put the Pack down 2-1 when he put up his seventh of the season by beating Jason Missiaen, with another deflection of a left-point shot by Kelly.

Yet again, the Wolf Pack quickly tied the game up; this time it was Chris Bourque just 58 seconds after Thompson’s goal.  Bourque worked a give-and-go with Fast that led to Bourque’s sliding back-hander that beat Devils’ goaltender Keith Kinkaid (27 saves).

“We came back more than once, but you can only do that so many times,” said Hartford coach Ken Gernander.

It was not until the 11:01 mark of the second period that either team scored again.  Whitney got the puck at the side of the net after a blocked shot in front and put it home to put the Devils up 3-2.

Thomson dug a bigger hole for the Wolf Pack 2:50 into the third, when he capitalized on a Pack turnover in the defensive end, beating Missiaen with a wrist shot from the top of the left faceoff circle to make it 4-2.

“You’ve got to manage your puck,” said Gernander.  “You might not always be able to make a tape to tape pass or have an available outlet, but it’s got to be put in to an area that allows us to recover.”

Timmins added to the Albany lead with 12:55 left in the third, when he got his second goal of the year to make it 5-2.

J.T. Miller cut the Devils’ lead to two, when he capitalized on a Wolf Pack power play at 8:39 with a wrist shot from the faceoff dot that rang off of the iron and in.

After Miller’s goal, however, the Devils would tack on two more, both by Sislo.  He scored his fourth of the year at 10:10 to make it a three-goal Albany lead, and then added an empty-netter for the final margin at 19:28.

“It’s almost a benefit to have three games in a weekend,” Bourque said, “because you definitely have two games Saturday and Sunday to make up for tonight.”

The Wolf Pack and Devils complete a home-and-home Saturday night at the Times-Union Center in Albany, with faceoff at 5:00 PM.  All of the action of that game can be heard live on Fox Sports Radio 1410, and on-line at www.foxsportsradio1410.com and iHeartRadio.  Video streaming is available at www.ahllive.com.

The Wolf Pack’s next home outing is this Sunday, October 26 at the XL Center, as the Norfolk Admirals visit for a 3:00 game.  The Wolf Pack’s “Click It or Ticket Family Value Pack” is again featured on Sundays this year, and has been expanded to Wednesday and Thursday home games as well.  The Family Value Pack features two tickets, two sodas and two hot dogs, all for only $35.

Tickets for all 2014-15 Wolf Pack home games are now on sale at the XL Center ticket office, on-line at www.hartfordwolfpack.com and by phone at (877) 522-8499.  Wolf Pack tickets start as low as $12 for youth 12 years old or younger.

UConn, Georgetown Announce Two-Year Series

From UConn:

STORRS, Conn. (Oct. 24, 2014) — The UConn men’s basketball program announced today that the Huskies will renew their on-court rivalry with former Big East Conference colleague Georgetown in a home-and-home series over the next two seasons.

UConn Huskies vs Georgetown HoyasGeorgetown is scheduled to come to Connecticut on Jan. 23, 2016, with the Huskies visiting the Verizon Center to play the Hoyas on Jan. 21, 2017.

UConn and Georgetown have a long history, dating back to 1958 and including 64 games, with Georgetown holding a 35-29 advantage. As Big East Conference opponents, Georgetown had a 32-26 edge. The two programs share the record for most Big East Conference Tournament championships with seven apiece.

Georgetown won the last game played between the two teams, a 79-78 double overtime thriller at Gampel Pavilion on Feb. 27, 2013. UConn lost its last two games against the Hoyas, but the teams split their last four contests. UConn’s last win against Georgetown was a 79-62 decision on March 9, 2011, during the Big East Tournament at Madison Square Garden, on the Huskies’ way to the Big East Tournament title and their third NCAA National Championship.

Chili Davis Named Hitting Coach By the Red Sox

From the Red Sox:

BOSTON, MA- The Boston Red Sox today named Chili Davis as the club’s major league hitting coach. Additionally, Victor Rodriguez will return for his third season as the team’s assistant hitting coach. Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington and Manager John Farrell made the announcements.

Boston Red SoxA three-time All-Star and three-time World Series Champion during his 19-year playing career, Davis spent the last three seasons as hitting coach for the Oakland Athletics. Over that time, the A’s led all big league teams in walks (1,709), while ranking fourth in home runs (527) and fifth in runs scored (2,209).

Under Davis, the Athletics finished third among American League teams in runs in both 2014 (729) and 2013 (767). In 2012, his first year guiding the offense, Oakland scored 68 more runs and hit 81 more home runs than it had in 2011. Last year, the A’s led the AL in walks (586) and triples (33) and finished fourth in times on base (1,989).

The 54-year-old returns to the Red Sox organization, where he served as hitting coach for the Triple-A Pawtucket Red Sox in 2011, helping that team to the International League playoffs. Before that, he was a part-time instructor for the Dodgers in the 2010 Fall Instructional League, and coached in the Australian Summer League from 2003-04.

An outfielder and designated hitter, Davis ranks among the top switch hitters all-time in home runs (7th, 350), RBI (7th, 1,372), walks (9th, 1,194), and games played (9th, 2,436) between the San Francisco Giants (1981-87), California Angels (1988-90, 1993-96), Minnesota Twins (1991-96), Kansas City Royals (1997), and New York Yankees (1998-99). He is one of seven switch hitters with at least 10 seasons of 20 or more home runs.

A native of Kingston, Jamaica, Davis became the first player from that island to reach the major leagues in 1981. As a player he was part of three World Series championship clubs, with the Twins in 1991 and in back-to-back seasons with the Yankees in 1998 and 1999. With the Angels during parts of 1993 and 1994, he was Farrell’s teammate.

“Chili’s experience and success as both a player and a coach make him a valuable addition to our staff, and we are excited to have him working with our hitters,” said Farrell. “In addition, we look forward to having Victor return to the staff. In his time here, he has built strong relationships with our younger players, some of which date back to his days working in our minor league system.”

The 2015 season will mark Rodriguez’s 21st in the Red Sox organization. Last month he was named Man of the Year by the BoSox Club for his efforts on the field and in the community during the 2014 season. In 2013, his first year on the major league staff, Boston led all major league teams in runs scored (853) and won the World Series.

He began his coaching career in the Boston organization in 1995 after playing in 31 games with Triple-A Pawtucket.

Born in New York City, Rodriguez was signed by Baltimore in 1977 at the age of 15 out of Naguabo High School in Puerto Rico.
