UConn Football Names Don Brown Defensive Coordinator

New UConn Huskies football coach Paul Pasqualoni continues to fill out his staff as he named former Maryland Terrapins defensive coordinator Don Brown to the same position at UConn.

Here’s the release from UConn:

STORRS, Conn. – Don Brown, who has served as the head coach at three different schools in New England and has been the defensive coordinator at Maryland for the past two seasons, has been named the defensive coordinator at the University of Connecticut.

Don Brown is the new defensive coordinator at UConn.Brown, a Spencer, Mass. native, was the head coach at Massachusetts (2004-08), Northeastern (2000-03) and Plymouth State (1993-95). He led UMass to the 2006 NCAA Football Championship Subdivision finals and has a career record of 95-45 as a collegiate head coach.

“I am happy to have the opportunity to be coaching back in New England at the highest level at the University of Connecticut,” says Brown. “My family is in New England and I am looking forward to being there. I am excited in working with Coach Pasqualoni and his tremendous defensive experience will only help me learn and grow as a coach.

“We will have a defensive that is aggressive, fast and physical. I believe in big pressure and penetration and that is what I am going to give the UConn defense. I am excited to get to the campus and work hard to get better every day.”

In his two seasons at Maryland, the defense improved significantly in nearly every statistical category. The Terps ended 2010 ranked No. 38 nationally in scoring defense (22.2 points per game), No. 39 in total defense (352.3 yards per game), No. 21 in rushing defense (124.5 yards per game), ninth in pass efficiency defense (107.6 rating) and tied for 18th in turnovers gained (29). The Terps also broke up 58 passes which doubled their total from 2009.

The 2009 squad posted the Terps highest sack total in five years (2.25 per game) and picked off six passes over the final four games.

“I am tremendously excited for the University of Connecticut and our football program to bring Don Brown to the UConn family,” says head coach Paul Pasqualoni. “Don is a man of great character and has an exceptional football background, including 12 years as a head coach.

“He is a teacher, a coach and has been involved in the highest levels and academics and athletics. Don is a great addition to our staff in terms of the approach we will take with our student-athletes in the University of Connecticut football program.”

During his tenure at UMass, the Minutemen maintained one of the top defensive units in the nation. They finished among the top 20 in total defense in three of his five seasons and UMass was also first nationally in scoring defense in 2005.

Brown led UMass to its best five-year span in program history as the Minutemen finished with 43 wins in his tenure, the third-highest total in school history. His winning percentage (.694/43-19) is tops in UMass history.

In 2006 and 2007, he led UMass to a 23-5 overall record as the Minutemen earned NCAA FCS postseason berths both years, while winning consecutive conference titles. Brown led UMass to the 2006 national championship game after capturing the Atlantic 10 title with a perfect 8-0 record. UMass tied the school record for wins in a season with a 13-2 record and set a school-mark for wins in a row with 12.

Brown was recognized nationally and regionally for the team’s accomplishments. He was named the 2006 AFCA Region I Coach of the Year, 2006 Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year and 2006 New England Football Coach of the Year.

Prior to his head-coaching stint at UMass, Brown led the Northeastern Huskies for four seasons (2000-03). After taking over a team coming off a 2-9 record, with just two winning seasons in the previous 12 before his arrival, Brown led Northeastern to a 27-20 mark. The Huskies posted winning records each of his last two seasons, going a combined 18-7 during that span.

In 2002, Brown led Northeastern to its best season in school history, as the Huskies went 10-3 and made the school’s only appearance in the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs.

Brown was one of the top defensive coaches in the Northeast before his most recent two stints as head coach. He served as UMass’ defensive coordinator during the 1998 and 1999 seasons and helped UMass to two of the best seasons in school history, as the 1998 team posted an overall record of 12-3 and won the Division I-AA national championship,

During the 1996 and 1997 seasons, Brown served the defensive coordinator at Brown University.

Brown also served as a head coach at Plymouth State (1993-95) where he posted a 25-6 mark (.806), leading the Panthers to a pair of Division III playoff appearances.

Prior to his time at Plymouth State he was the defensive coordinator at Dartmouth (1984-86) and Yale (1987-92). Brown began his collegiate coaching career as an assistant at Dartmouth in 1982 after five seasons (1977-1982) at Hartford High School in White River Junction, Vt., He moved on to Mansfield (Pa.) University as an assistant coach in 1983.

He is a 1977 graduate of Norwich University where he starred at running back and is now a member of the NU Hall of Fame. He earned his master’s degree from Plymouth State in 1996.

Born, July 31, 1955, Brown and his wife, Deborah have four children (Echo, Zachariah, Rana and Chelsea) and three grandchildren (Lola, Piper and William).

Carl Everett’s Crazy Hall of Fame Nominees

Since we’ve opened up a new calendar, hopefully you got yours for $4 or less, it’s time to open up the doors to the hallowed hall of Carl Everett’s Crazy Hall of Fame.  We’re going to list some nominee’s of our own but we want to hear from you as well.  Put them in comments, email them to me, send smoke signals or tweet Ian or Steve and let us know your nominee(s).

The rules are simple: To get in Carl Everett”s Crazy Hall of Fame the nominee has “to be absolutely bat shit crazy to get inducted. The offenses must have occurred on the field of play so arrests for DUI, dog fighting and other things aren’t eligible”.

To see the full list of 2010 nominees, click on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

So here’s our suggestions so far:

Tonya Harding – She hired her ex-husband and a thug to whack fellow skater and Olympic hopeful Nancy Kerrigan’s knee.  Kerrigan was hurt, but did get compete in the Olympics as did Harding.  Once it was found out she was a part of it the, Ice Skating Federalise banned her from life so now she boxes and appears on Tru TV.

Woody Hayes – The former Ohio State football coach actually ended up losing his job as the Top Buckeye in 1978 after he punched Clemson’s Charlie Bauman on the OSU sideline after an interception in the Gator Bowl.

This wasn’t the first time Hayes had a run in, he went crazy on referee Jerry Markbreit in 1971 in the Michigan game at Ann Arbor when a pass interference call was missed.  Hayes stormed onto the field, launched a profanity-laced tirade at the referee and tore up the sideline markers, receiving a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. A further enraged Hayes then proceeded to throw the penalty flag into the crowd, began destroying the yard markers and threw the first-down marker into the ground like a javelin before being restrained by Buckeyes team officials; Hayes was then assessed an additional 15-yard penalty and ejected. Hayes was suspended for one game and fined $1000.

Hayes also had confrontations with the media including punching a reporter in the face, assaulting a tv cameraman and charging at another.

Tom Cable – the former Oakland Raiders head coach punched out an assistant coach during a meeting in 2009 then denied ever hitting Randy Hansen saying he fell and that’s what caused his fractured jaw.

Ronald Syna – a Maitland, FL hockey dad was upset that his son got roughed up in a hockey game amongst a bunch of 15 year olds in 2010.  After the game the elder Syna sought out the offender, Calvin Dickinson who had been penalized for the rough play, and according to witnesses he pushed, threatened, cussed and repeatedly punched the yute.  Good thing the guy wasn’t John Gotti the poor kid would be in the river.

Ray Boudreau – A Harrisburg, PA youth baseball coach is facing a simple assault charge for allegedly punching his 9-year-old son in the face after the boy was ejected from a game. Police charged Ray Boudreau after he allegedly struck his son twice with a closed fist at Monday’s game. Boudreau claimed to have hit his son in the back but still.

Umit Ozat – A Turkish Club soccer coach decked a fan when an towards the Manisaspor coach during his side’s game in January 2011.  The rogue fan sprinted onto the field after Ankaragucu equalised shortly before time. Ozat clearly wasn’t up for any of the supporters joining him in celebrating and when one young fan tried to rush onto the pitch, Ozat dropped him. A powerful right hook floored the young man as chaos erupted with a brawl kicking off on the side of the pitch.

Herb Pope – The Seton Hall basketball player was ejected from his team’s NIT game against Texas Tech in March 2010 when he punched Red Raider player Darko Cohadarevic not once, but twice in the family jewels.  I thought you were supposed to dribble balls in basketball? Pope surely has had a unique NCAA career having transferred to the Hall from New Mexico, maybe that soccer chick taught him his moves? Then the ball punching incident and shortly there after in spring practice he collapsed and nearly died only to return to the court for 2010-11 season. He had also been shot five times at a party in 2007.

Cortland Finnegan and Andre Johnson – the NFL duo are linked together much like Billy and Reggie and a few others in the Hall because of an on field incident in 2010 season.  Finnegan who is known as a pest really got into Johnson good during a November game in Houston and the mild mannered Johnson became so enraged that he ripped the helmet from Finnegan’s head and started to brutally pound him while Finnegan took it all the while looking for a yellow flag.  Both players were flagged, ejected and fined by the league but not suspended for the act.

Rick DiPietro and Brent Johnson – It isn’t often when two NHL goalies go at it but when it happens it’s pure gold and that was the case on February 2, 2011 when New York Islanders netminder DiPietro and Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Johnson went toe-to-toe; blocker pad-to-blocker pad during a game in Pittsburgh.  DiPietro really took a beating as Johnson left him with a broken face and an injured knee that caused him to miss 4-6 weeks of the season.  All that damage was done with just one punch.  Who says goalies aren’t bad asses?

Rick Rypien – On October 19, 2010 Rypien while playing for the Vancouver Canucks left the ice in Minnesota to attack a young 15 year old fan he thought was taunting him for his 10 minute misconduct penalty in the 2nd period of the game against the Minnesota Wild.  When Rypien was walking down the runway to the locker room he saw the young fan applauding his fate and reached up and grabbed him by the jersey.  Only when an older male fan, presumably the boys father, intervened did Rypien let go of the teen. Rypien was suspended for 6 games for the incident.

Mason Holland – A Desoto, FL high school basketball player, Holland, attacked a game referee and threw him to the court after being assessed a technical foul during a game in December 2010.  His team, Arcadia Desoto, was forced to forfeit the game and Holland was removed from the team and was facing expulsion from the school.

“Events like Futures at Fenway reflect the team’s commitment to creating opportunities for more fans to experience America’s Most Beloved Ballpark,” said Red Sox President/CEO Larry Lucchino. “Thanks to the suggestion of Mayor Menino, the generous support of presenting sponsor Xfinity, and the family-friendly ticket prices, this summer many of our fans will enjoy a relaxing day of minor league fun at Fenway watching the franchise’s future stars in action.”

Although records are incomplete, the games in 2006 are believed to be the first minor league games played at Fenway Park since the 1977 Eastern League All-Star Game. The last known regular season minor league game played at Fenway had been a 1966 Eastern League contest between Pittsfield (Red Sox) and Pawtucket (Indians).
