Afternoon Red Sox Delight – 9/4

Matt Harrison (L), John Lackey (R)

After coming back for a win yesterday, the Boston Red Sox look to win again in the rubber game of a three-game set with the Texas Rangers this afternoon at Historic Fenway Park.

Today’s first pitch is scheduled for 1:35 p.m. and will be broadcast on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the Rangers television market, you can catch the game on Fox Sports Southwest. If you live outside of those markets, you’re in luck as TBS will have coverage of the game as well. And if you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to the game on the 2011 Red Sox Radio Network.

John Lackey makes his 24th start of the season for the Red Sox. In his previous 23 starts, Lackey is 12-10 with a 5.94 ERA. He’s made two starts against the Rangers this season and is 1-1 with a 11.32 ERA (13 ER/10.1 IP). He’s made 35 career starts against them and is 12-13 with a 6.04 ERA. In his only career start against them at the Fens, he received a no decision after allowing two runs in seven innings last year.

Matt Harrison looks to keep the Red Sox off the scoreboard this afternoon for Ron Washington in his 27th appearance (26th start) of 2011. In his previous 26 appearances (25 starts), Harrison is 10-9 with a 3.54 ERA. He’s made two starts against the Red Sox this year and is 1-1 with a 6.00 ERA (8 ER/12 IP). He’s made six career appearances (four starts) against the Red Sox and is 2-1 with a 7.13 ERA (19 ER/24 IP). Two of those appearances (one start) have come at the Fens where he has no record with a 12.60 ERA (7 ER/5 IP).

Red Sox News & Notes – 9/4

Carl Crawford(notes) #13 of the Boston Red Sox (R) is congratulated by teammates Adrian Gonzalez(notes) #28 (L), Mike Aviles(notes) #3, and David Ortiz(notes) #34 after hitting a grand slam in the fourth inning against the Texas Rangers at Fenway Park on September 3, 2011 in Boston, Massachusetts.

After a miserable game on Friday against the Texas Rangers, things didn’t get off to the best start again on Saturday for the Boston Red Sox.

They had Erik Bedard on the mound seeking his first win in a Red Sox uniform in his sixth try. But after giving up three runs early on, it wasn’t looking so hot for the local nine. But they staged a massive comeback in the 4th inning and when all was said and done, Bedard had picked his first Red Sox victory in their 12-7 win over the Rangers.

And despite the win, they remain a ½ game behind the New York Yankees for first place in the AL East since the Yanks beat the Toronto Blue Jays. The Red Sox lead in the AL Wild Card remains at nine games as well.

Rangers starter Colby Lewis got off to a rough start in the 4th inning after Josh Reddick, who had four hits on the day before leaving at the end of the 8th after being hit a by a pitch, led off with a single. Jarrod Saltalamacchia made it a tie game at three with a monstrous blast to right field. Lewis then got Jacoby Ellsbury to fly out before being chased from the game on a Dustin Pedroia single.

The wheels on the Rangers bus fell off with Yoshinori Tateyama as he had to issue intentional walks to two of the first three batters he faced in Adrian Gonzalez and David Ortiz. Those intentional walks were sandwiched by the second out of the inning courtesy of the bat of Kevin Youkilis. Mike Aviles pinch-hit for Jed Lowrie who left with shoulder tightness and delivered a big single that scored one run and put the Red Sox ahead for good.

Carl Crawford then made Tateyama pay as he hit his first grand slam in a Red Sox uniform and the rout was on from there. They get one more that inning and then would add three more in the 6th when Pedroia hit a bases clearing double off of Mark Hamburger (insert your hamburger jokes here).

As good as the offense was in the 4th inning when they scored eight runs, there’s still plenty of questions about the bullpen.

After throwing a 1-2-3 inning in the 7th inning, Dan Wheeler was roughed up for three runs and four hits in the 8th. Franklin Morales was okay but he gave up a mammoth home run to Esteban German.

Right now these guys are auditioning for bullpen spots come playoff time. Wheeler had actually been throwing the ball since returning from the DL so you can only hope this was just a minor bump in the road. While Morales has been here since May, he’s been up and down with his outings. With Felix Doubront in the mix as the go-to lefty in the pen, Morales is going to need to pitch much better.

There’s three spots locked up in the bullpen right now for the postseason in Jonathan Papelbon, Daniel Bard and Alfredo Aceves. After that it’s a crap shoot. Terry Francona is going to need someone to emerge or should I say reemerge over the course of the rest of this month as the season wraps up.

As good as the offense is, without the strong bullpen behind them, it might be for naught. And as you can tell here, I’m not too worried about the starting pitching. Sure there’s some questions there with Bedard and John Lackey but personally I think it’ll be all right.

We’ll be back lin a short while with this afternoon’s lineups, batter/pitcher matchups and links from the day. But for now, enjoy the overnight links below by clicking on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

Seven Huskies Make NFL Rosters; Eight Cut

It’s final cutdown day for teams in the NFL and for some former UConn Huskies, it’s been a good day. But for eight of them, it’s not been the best of the days as they are now out of work.

UConn in the NFL

Starting off with the bad news, veteran QB Dan Orlovsky was cut by the Indianapolis Colts. Former Husky quarterback Tyler Lorenzen, who had been a tight end with the New Orleans Saints practice squad, was cut by the team on Saturday as well. Donald Thomas, who broke into the league with the Miami Dolphins, was cut by the Detroit Lions.

Lawrence Wilson, who was a 6th round draft pick of the Carolina Panthers in the 2011 NFL Draft, was among the final cuts for them. Also cut from the Panthers was Robert McClain. The same goes for Greg Lloyd, who was drafted in the 7th round by the Philadelphia Eagles this year.

Undrafted free agent Zach Hurd was cut by the Seattle Seahawks earlier this week and fellow UDFA Scott Lutrus was cut by the Jacksonville Jaguars on Friday.

To continue reading, click on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

Despite less than stellar numbers in his first two years, running back Donald Brown has made the Indianapolis Colts.

Arguably one of the better UConn players in the NFL right now is defensive back Tyvon Branch. And for the fourth consecutive season, he’ll be doing his thing on Sundays in the NFL. Will Beatty should find himself starting at tackle for the New York Giants this season. And despite losing his starting job last year, Darius Butler has made the New England Patriots.

2010 draftee from UConn, wide receiver Marcus Easley has made the Buffalo Bills after missing the 2010 season with a knee injury.

Two of UConn’s 2011 NFL Draftees have made their teams.

Anthony Sherman and Jordan Todman both survived final cuts with the Arizona Cardinals and San Diego Chargers respectively.

One thing to keep in mind folks is the fact that just because these guys have made the team, they may not be there when the NFL season opens. Teams will be scouring the waiver wire trying to find a fit with someone released from another team. And if any one of these guys were among the final players to stay with their team, it’s quite possible they could be the first to go if someone new is acquired by their team.

If anyone of the cuts makes a practice team for any of the 32 NFL teams, I’ll be sure to let you know as well.

McCombs Runs UConn Past Fordham 35-3

UConn's Lyle McCombs (No. 43) heads toward the end zone to score yet another UConn touchdown during the second half of UConn football opener at Rentschler Field against Fordham on Saturday. UConn won 35-3.

After Hurricane/Tropical Storm Irene ravaged the state of Connecticut last weekend and forced the UConn Huskies football opener from Thursday, redshirt freshman running back Lyle McCombs did some damage of his own to the Fordham Rams on Saturday afternoon.

McCombs ran for 141 yards and four touchdowns to help the Huskies to a 35-3 win over the Rams in front of 34,562 at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, CT to give Paul Pasqualoni his first win in his first game as head coach at UConn. Pasqualoni is also the first UConn coach since 1922 to win in his first game as a UConn head coach.

The big story we were looking for in Saturday’s game was who was going to be the starting quarterback between Scott McCummings, Johnny McEntee and Michael Nebrich. The “winner” was McEntee although McCummings and Nebrich also saw some time behind center. And while most reports had Nebrich as the favorite, after the game it appears that McCummings and McEntee might be the two best right now.

McEntee was 8-of-12 for 113 yards and no touchdowns. Nebrich was 3-of-8 for 60 yards while McCummings only pass of the day was good for 55 yards to Ryan Griffin. McCummings was the second leading rusher of the day behind McCombs with 23 yards while Neibrich ran for 11.

As a team, the Huskies ran for 206 yards behind their offensive line. This should have happened given the big size advantage over Fordham’s defensive line. It was thought that D.J. Shoemate would start but an ankle injury forced him to sit out. And after McCombs big afternoon, Shoemate may be relegated to backing him up when he returns from injury.

Sure it was only Fordham but UConn defense is as advertised.

Kendall Reyes is an absolute beast out there and Sio Moore was all over the place. You could see the difference with defensive coordinator Don Brown’s defense. They were bringing pressure on the offensive line all day long and no one could really stop Reyes at all. The defense held Fordham to just 20 yards rushing and 169 yards of total offense.

Overall though, I wasn’t throughly impressed with the Huskies. There are definitely somethings to work on.

I wasn’t a big fan of the rotating quarterbacks at all. I know Pasqualoni wanted to get them all some time in this game and rightfully so since this was no more than a glorified scrimmage. But it just seemed to me that none of them could get into a rhythm at all. And that can’t make it easy on the offense line either especially when you look at the film and see some of the missed blocks on pass protection.

The one big play that the defense allowed came on miscommunication between Jerome Junior and Harris Agbor. From what we’ve heard, you know Brown will lay into them as well. The little mistakes that the defense made can’t happen going forward as better teams will eat them alive if that continues to happen.

It’s a start though and if one of those three can pull ahead of the other in the quarterback race (personally I think it’ll be McCummings), the offense could turn out to be better than expected.

The Huskies will now use the week to get ready for a matchup with the Vanderbilt Commodores next Saturday night on the road.

UConn's Lyle McCombs (No. 43) celebrates near the end zone after scoring yet another UConn touchdown during the second half of UConn football opener at Rentschler Field against Fordham on Saturday. UConn won 35-3.

Offensive Player of the Game:

This really should come as no surprise at all but I’m going with Lyle McCombs who ran for 141 yards and four touchdowns. He also caught two balls for 17 yards.

Defensive Player of the Game:

While Jory Johnson led the Huskies with 11 tackles, I was more impressed with the play of Sio Moore. He was back in pass coverage a bunch of times and broke up two passes including one that lead to an interception by Byron Jones. Moore also finished with seven tackles (three solo, four assisted) and one of those went for a loss of a yard.

Turning Point(s) of the Game:

There’s no real turning point in this game as we knew Fordham would be outmatched by the Huskies.

Offensive Notes:

UConn's Scott McCummings (No. 11) runs the ball during the first half of UConn football opener at Rentschler Field against Fordham on Saturday. Johnny McEntee got the start and passed for 117 yards. Scott McCummings threw his only pass for 55 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for 23 yards. Michael Nebrich was just 3-of-8 for 60 yards and threw an interception. Lyle McCombs ran for 141 yards and four TD’s while also catching two balls for 17 yards.  Ryan Griffin led all receivers with three catches for 97 yards and a touchdown. Isiah Moore had two catches for 42 yards while Geremy Davis also had two catches for 33 yards. Kashif Moore’s only catch of the day was good for 25 yards.

Defensive Notes:

Jory Johnson led the Huskies with 11 tackles (five solo, six assisted). Yawin Smallwood and Teddy Jennings both had eight tackles (two solo, six assisted) while Sio Moore had seven. Trevardo Williams had the only sack for the Huskies and Byron Jones had the only interception.

Special Teams Notes:

Cole Wagner had five punts for a total of 149 yards (29.8 per punt). The telling stat though was that none of the five punts were down insided of Fordham’s 20. Dave Teggart hit all five PAT’s and is now 101-for-101 in his career. He’s now also tied for the UConn career record of 259 points with former Husky Matt Nuzie. Nick Williams returned four punts for 28 yards and one kickoff 32 yards.

Injuries:

There were no injuries for UConn during the game that I saw.

D.J. Shoemate missed the game due to a sprained ankle suffered in practice on Thursday.

Things to Work On:

  • Obviously Pasqualoni needs to figure out who will be QB1. One of the three really needs to step up in practices this week. While no one really separated themselves today, I think right now it’s McCummings job to lose but that’s just me.
  • The defense needs to fix the little mistakes it made. A good team will eat them up.
  • Stay healthy. Hopefully Shoemate’s injury was just a one week thing. They can’t run McCombs all the time and having Shoemate who is experienced would definitely help them.

Up Next:

Afternoon Red Sox Delight – 9/3

Colby Lewis (L), Erik Bedard (R)

After falling out of first place in the loss last night, the Boston Red Sox look to get back to the business of winning in the second game of a three-game set with the Texas Rangers at Historic Fenway Park.

Today’s first pitch is scheduled for 4:10 p.m. and will be broadcast to 71% of the country on FOX. And if you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to the game on the 2011 Red Sox Radio Network.
