Morning Red Sox Delight – 9/5

Josh Beckett (L), Henderson Alvarez (R)

After losing 2-of-3 to the Texas Rangers, the Boston Red Sox hope to have better luck north of the border. They’ll try to do that as they kickoff a four-game set this afternoon against the Toronto Blue Jays at Rogers Centre.

Today’s first pitch is scheduled for 1:07 p.m. and will be broadcast on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the Blue Jays television market, you can catch the game on Rogers SportsNet. And if you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to the game on the 2011 Red Sox Radio Network.

Josh Beckett looks to right the ship for the Red Sox in his 27th start of 2011. In his previous 26 starts, Beckett is 12-5 with a 2.54 ERA. He picked up the win in his only start of the season against the Blue Jays. In that start back on April 16th, he picked up the win after allowing one run in seven innings of work. He’s made 15 career starts against the Blue Jays and is 4-6 with a 6.57 ERA. He’s had a tough time at Rogers Centre where he is 1-2 with a 9.28 ERA in six starts.

Henderson Alvarez makes just his sixth MLB start since being called up on August 10th by the Blue Jays. In his first five starts, he is 1-2 with a 3.52 ERA. Today’s outing will mark his first career start against the visiting nine from Boston.

Red Sox News & Notes – 9/5

John Lackey(notes) #41 of the Boston Red Sox sends the ball to first but does not make the out in the fifth inning against the Texas Rangers on September 4, 2011 at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts.

Apparently Boston Red Sox starting pitcher John Lackey is a magician and had us all fooled. He had been 7-2 in his last 10 starts of which only three were quality starts. So after another shellacking of Lackey on Sunday, this time by the Texas Rangers in their 11-4 win, are the curtains slowly but surely closing on his act?

If you had to choose right now between Lackey, Erik Bedard, Tim Wakefield and Andrew Miller for a third starter behind Josh Beckett and Jon Lester, who are you going to choose? With Lackey, Wake and Miller you really don’t know what you’re going to get. While the same goes for Bedard, he’s been pretty consistent on the mound for the Red Sox since coming over in a trade with the Seattle Mariners.

Without a good third starter, the Red Sox will have a tough time getting out of the division series. And you have to hope the can win the division as I’m pretty sure they don’t want to play the Texas Rangers or face any of their lefty pitchers.

Speaking of the playoffs, the Red Sox loss coupled with a win by the New York Yankees increases their lead to 1.5 games in the AL East. The lead in the AL Wild Card is down to eight games over the Tampa Bay Rays.

Yesterday, I talked about Felix Doubront and how he had a chance to be the go-to lefty in the Red Sox pen. Given a high leverage situation when Lackey left the game with the bases loaded, Doubront failed miserably.

He allowed a single, walk, sacrifice fly, walk and a triple and by the end of the 6th inning, the local nine went from being down 2-0 to losing 9-0. Matt Albers came in and bailed out Doubront and actually pitched better in his 1.2 innings of work. Hopefully this outing turns things around for Albers. Lord knows the Red Sox need any help they can in the bullpen from players not named Alfredo Aceves, Daniel Bard and Jonathan Papelbon.

Kevin Youkilis looks to be getting out of the slump since returning from the DL as he had two hits. David Ortiz added two hits and an RBI while Marco Scutaro had a hit and two RBIs. Darnell McDonald knocked in the other Red Sox run.

While the Red Sox got two of those runs off of Rangers starter, lefty Matt Harrison, it was a little too late. They’ve had a really tough time getting anything going against the Rangers lefties lately so something needs to change. Hopefully seeing two lefties in the upcoming four game series with the Toronto Blue Jays can help exercise future demons.

Since the Red Sox are playing an afternoon game (1:07 p.m.) this afternoon in Toronto, we’ll be back in a short while with this afternoon’s lineups, batter/pitcher matchups and links from the day. Patriots Sign Former Packer to Practice Squad

In The Red Zone

The New England Patriots added a fifth player to the practice squad late Sunday evening when they signed OL Nick McDonald.

McDonald, an undrafted free agent in 2010 out of Grand Valley State, was signed by the Green Bay Packers and all though he never played in any games he did earn a Super Bowl XLV Championship ring.

On Saturday, he was waived by Green Bay during the final cut downs for the 53-man roster.  McDonald signed with New England after having several offers with other teams.

Patriots Ink Four To Practice Squad

In The Red Zone

The New England Patriots and the rest of the NFL are scouring the waiver list looking for players who they feel are an upgrade of what they have as well as potential practice squad players.

Remember players practice but can not play in games unless signed and moved to the 53-man roster.  They also can be signed by any of the other 31 teams at any time as they are considered to be free agents.

The Patriots have signed the following players to their practice squad:

  • S Ross Ventrone
  • DE Alex Silvestro
  • LB/DE Markell Carter
  • DL Aaron Lavarias

New England was also prepared to sign TE Lee Smith and TE Will Yeatman but they ended up being claimed by AFC East foes.  Smith, a 5th round draft pick, was claimed by the Buffalo Bills, while Yeatman, an undrafted free agent, was claimed by the Miami Dolphins.  Also claimed today was WR Brandon Tate by the Cincinnati Bengals.

S Brandon Meriweather has already signed with the Chicago Bears today as well.  OL Thomas Austin was claimed off waivers by the Houston Texans, as was DL Landon Cohen by the Seattle Seahawks.

Former Patriots QB Kevin O’Connell, released the other day by Miami, was claimed by the New York Jets where he played the last two seasons.

There’s speculation that the Patriots are looking to add a fullback/tight end type to the practice squad.  I also don’t think Bill Belichick and his staff is done as far as tweaking the roster.  I really think you’ll see a veteran tight end, someone who is knowledgeable of the type of offensive system they run, get signed and don’t rule out Alge Crumpler.

Two Former Huskies Join NFL Practice Squads

Scott Lutrus (L), Greg Lloyd (R)

When NFL squads made their final cutdowns yesterday, seven former members of the UConn Huskies football team found themselves on rosters while eight were looking for jobs. On Sunday, two of them found work on NFL practice squads.

Former Husky linebackers Greg Lloyd and Scott Lutrus will be in the NFL this season just on the practice squad though.

After being cut by the Philadelphia Eagles, the team that drafted him in the 7th round in the 2011 NFL Draft, Lloyd was officially added to the Eagles practice squad roster on Sunday.

Lutrus, who had been signed as an undrafted free agent by the Jacksonville Jaguars and cut by them on Saturday, was signed to the practice squad of the St. Louis Rams.

Finally, according to former Huskies defensive lineman, Rob Lunn aka The Fat White Guy via Twitter, former Husky lineman Zach Hurd is working out for the Cleveland Browns.

Patriots Sign Two; Cut Two

The New England Patriots like every other NFL team is busy this holiday weekend working trying to fine tune it’s roster with slight tweaks here and there.  Bill Belichick who is a master tweaker got started early on Sunday morning when he signed RG Brian Waters.

New England PatriotsWaters, who was released by Kansas City in July, is a five-time Pro Bowl selection including last season when none other than the Patriots staff coached him in the Pro Bowl.  He has also been named twice as a NFL All-Pro.

With injuries to OL Dan Connolly and OL Ryan Wendell he can step immediately.  He is pretty familiar with the New England system as he played under former Patriots coordinator Charlie Weiss last season with the Chiefs.

The 34-year old Waters played 11 seasons in Kansas City after being undrafted in 2000 out of North Texas.  In 2009 he was the recipient of the “Walter Payton Man of the Year Award” for contributions on and off the field.

The Patriots also announced that they claimed LS Danny Aiken off of waivers from the Buffalo Bills.  NFLDraftScout.com rated Aiken, who is a rookie out of Virginia, as the Number 1 long snapper available in this year’s draft.  He was the only long snapper invited to the NFL Combine in Indianapolis in February.

He signed with the Bills after the lockout ended in July.

In order to make room on the 53-man roster the Patriots released OL Steve Maneri and LS James Dearth.  Dearth was just signed as a free agent about a week ago to replace Matt Katula, while Maneri spent the entire camp with the team in Foxboro.
