Brady, Gronk and Ridley Lead Patriots to Jolly Good Time

New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski, goes to score during the first half of a NFL football game at Wembley Stadium, London, Sunday, Oct. 28, 2012.

The New England Patriots and St Louis Rams went overseas for the 2012 NFL International Series Game at Wembley Stadium in London.  The English hadn’t seen such a forceful offensive onslaught since the Patriots whipped the Tampa Buccaneers in their last London appearance, 35-7 in 2009.

When Tom Brady and company were done with the Rams there was no doubt in anyone’s mind who claimed supremacy on the field on this day.

Brady, a 2 time NFL MVP, along with third year TE Rob Gronkowski and 2nd year RB Stevan Ridley led the potent New England attack.

Brady went 23 of 35 for 304 yards with 4 TDs and 0 INTs and no sacks and finished with a passer rating of 131.  Brady threw TD passes to WR Brandon Lloyd of 19 yards and 9 yards and to Gronkowski for 7 yards and 14 yards.

In addition to the 2 TD catches Gronkowski grabbed a total of 8 passes for 146 yards with a long on the day of 32 yards.  Then of course it was the post TD celebrations.  The first was the “Changing of the Guard” or as Gronk put it was “that little nutcracker dude that’s guarding the house.”

The second could only be describe as a tribute to “Magic Mike”.

Ridley had his 4th 100-yard rushing game of the season and scored his 5th rushing TD on the year.  He had 127 yards on just 15 carries and all of his carries were either on 1st or 2nd down.  He is truly becoming a force to be reckoned with and it was nice to see him get back on track after a pair of tough games against Seattle and New York.

The defense did a nice job today for the most part.  Look no defense is going to be perfect and cut out all the big plays but they made some adjustments and after the 50-yard TD pass by Sam Bradford to WR Chris Givens on the Rams first drive the big plays were minimized.

New England held St Louis to 17 first downs (7 rushing, 9 passing, and 1 by penalty) a total of 326 yards (107 rushing, 219 passing) and were very stingy in third and fourth down.  The Rams only had 4 plays the entire game of 20 yards or more which is marked improvement over the past 5 weeks.

The team should be feeling good about itself right now.  They sit at 5-3 and in first place in the AFC East as they head into their bye week.  Their November games are home games against Buffalo, Indianapolis and a Thanksgiving road trip to face the Jets.  All three are winnable games and with wins will put the division out of reach yet again.

Only one Big East team remains in both polls and that is the Louisville Cardinals (12/10). The Rutgers Scarlet Knights fell out of the top 25 in the AP Poll and are among the others receiving votes but are ranked No. 25 in the Coaches' Poll.

Jeremy Lamb Traded To Oklahoma City Thunder

UConn's Jeremy Lamb hits a breakaway dunk with AIC's D.J. Gutridge (15) and Spencer Braithwaite trailing during the first half of an exhibition game at Gampel Pavilion in Storrs.

The only time that former UConn Huskies guard Jeremy Lamb ever plays a regular season game in Houston will now come when his new team, the Oklahoma City Thunder, visits the Toyota Center.

Lamb, the 12th overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft by the Houston Rockets, was just one part of a huge trade that the Rockets and Thunder pulled off late Saturday night.

The Thunder are sending James Harden, the 2012 winner of the NBA's Sixth Man Award, as well as Cole Aldrich, Daequan Cook and Lazar Hayward to the Rockets for Lamb, Kevin Martin, two future first round draft picks and a future second round pick.

Lamb appeared in six preseason games for the Rockets, making one start. In those six games, he averaged 6.2 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.3 assists.

Connecticut Whale 6, Providence Bruins 3

By Wil Goldsholl

Hartford, CT, October 27, 2012 – Despite being outshot 40-23, the Connecticut Whale defeated the Providence Bruins 6-3 Saturday night at the XL Center.

CT WhaleThe style of play reflected the geographical rivalry; the teams were grinding on the boards, finishing checks and peppering the goaltenders from the drop of the puck.

Kris Newbury led the way with a goal and two assists for the Whale, and Chris Kreider and Logan Pyett had a goal and an assist each.  Cam Talbot made 37 saves.

Two minutes and six seconds in, Providence’s Kyle MacKinnon fired a blind pass from the corner and Jamie Tardif was at the crease at the right time. The pass deflected off his skate and past Talbot, who earned his second start of the year in net after Friday night’s win over the Hershey Bears.

The teams continued to throw bodies through the first twenty minutes. Micheal Haley and Bobby Robins served major penalties for fighting six minutes in.

The Whale got on the board 7:52 in to the game when Chris Kreider slid a pass from the bottom of the circle to a breaking Ryan Bourque in the slot. At the 15-minute mark, another low-to-high feed landed on Bourque’s stick. Bruins goaltender Michael Hutchinson got a piece of the snapshot and it trickled behind him towards the goal line but did not cross. Forty-five seconds later, an almost identical near-miss happened in Talbot’s crease. Connecticut killed a power play when Andrew Yogan was sent off for roughing with 3:42 left, and the first stanza ended in a 1-1 draw.

The Whale came out swinging in the second period. Newbury fed the puck from the end boards to Blake Parlett at the point. Parlett’s slapper sailed wide of the net but banked around back to Chad Kolarik, who was in fortunate position. The goal came 94 seconds in to the period and was Kolarik’s second of the year.

The low-to-high pass worked for Connecticut again on the power play, when Kreider was grinding in the corner and got the puck to Newbury. Newbury found Mike Vernace at the point and it was Kreider who finished with 11:06 to play in the period. Coach Ken Gernander said of the goal, “If you look at a lot of our plays, there are opportunities we created and generally the hard way is the best way.”

Logan Pyett netted his first of 2011-12, when Kyle Jean delivered a pass while falling down. Pyett’s wrister from the right circle went bar down and with the score at 4-1, Michael Hutchinson was yanked from the game in favor of Niklas Svedberg.

Tommy Grant would also add a goal in the second before Jordan Caron tacked one on from Chris Bourque and Torey Krug with time winding in the period. Into the second intermission Connecticut led 5-2.

The Whale attack slowed in the third period and Talbot had to make a number of quality saves. Maxime Sauve cranked a slapshot passed Talbot with 17 minutes left to make things interesting, but Kris Newbury picked up an unassisted goal on a puck-handling flub by Svedberg, and that iced the game.

Connecticut Whale 3, Hershey Bears 1

By Wil Goldsholl

Hartford, CT, October 26, 2012 – The Connecticut Whale improved to 2-3-1-0 Friday with a win over the Hershey Bears at the XL Center. Leaning on their strong first-period play, Connecticut posted a 3-1 victory over the visiting Bears. Whale netminder Cam Talbot picked up his first win of the season in his first appearance of 2012.

CT WhaleThe Whale opened scoring against the Bears when Marek Hrivik snapped the puck out of the corner and found an unmarked Brandon Segal backdoor. The opening tally 4:25 into the first was Segal’s fourth goal in the last four games.

Exactly two minutes later, Hershey’s starting goaltender Dany Sabourin was left alone again. As the Whale cleared the defensive zone, Julien Brouillette could not corral a tricky bouncing puck.  Christian Thomas had momentum on his side and slid around Brouillette before swinging the puck across to Tommy Grant on the backdoor again. The goal was Grant’s second of the season.

Things looked grim for the Bears near the midway point of the first following Ryan Stoa’s tripping minor, but they survived the penalty kill without allowing any shots on goal.

With under five minutes to play in the first, Hershey generated a number of chances on broken plays but the Whale answered with a flurry of close range shots in the last two minutes. Sabourin stood strong and Connecticut took the 2-0 lead in to the break.

Hershey’s broken chances continued into the second period for several minutes before their attack stabilized.  Talbot maintained control of his crease though, saying he had no trouble with the long-range shots. “The first few [shots] were from the outside; that helped me get in the game and settle down. I just tried to not let up too many rebounds and help [the defense] as well,” Talbot said after the game.

With 4:15 to play in the second period, Blake Parlett was called for tripping, and the man advantage allowed the Bears several scoring opportunities. Thirty-seven seconds after Parlett’s minor expired, Mike Vernace was sent off for slashing. At the end of the second period, the Whale still held a 2-0 edge and they killed the remaining seconds on Vernace’s penalty at the start of the third.

Sixty seconds in to the third, Connecticut had one more power play chance on Zach Hamill’s slashing minor, but could not convert. With 8:18 to play, Parlett delivered a check on the nameplate that earned him a boarding minor; his second minor penalty of the night. Towards the end of Hershey’s five-on-four, Dmitry Orlov rifled one from the point around teammate Boyd Kane’s screen and over Talbot’s stick side shoulder. That goal cut the deficit in half, but Connecticut’s Ryan Bourque would seal the game with an empty-netter with 75 seconds left to play.

The offenses were well matched, with Connecticut outshooting Hershey 29-27. The extra shot made the difference as Sabourin stopped 26 of 28 and Talbot earned the first-star turning away 26 of the 27 he faced. On Thursday, I posted the first men's college basketball preseason poll from the USA Today Coaches Poll. Well on Friday, the preseason AP Poll came out.

AP Poll And like the Coaches Poll, the Indiana Hoosiers are the No. 1 team. In fact the top five in the AP Poll is the same as the Coaches Poll.

The Hoosiers are followed by the Louisville Cardinals, Kentucky Wildcats, The Ohio State Buckeyes and the Michigan Wolverines in the top 25.

Joining Louisville in the top 25 from the Big East are the Syracuse Orange (9), Notre Dame Fighting Irish (22) and Cincinnati Bearcats (24).

The Pittsburgh Panthers, Marquette Golden Eagles and Georgetown Hoyas are the only teams from the Big East among the others receiving votes.

Red Sox Name Torey Lovullo Bench Coach

Torey Lovullo as PawSox manager in 2010

Boston Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington and new skipper John Farrell have completed their first act together in compiling a field staff for Farrell.

Today, they named Toronto Blue Jays first base coach Torey Lovullo as Farrell's bench coach. Luvullo was the manager for the Pawtucket Red Sox in 2010.

I had told Steve when Farrell was hired that I thought Lovullo would end up on Farrell's staff. The question remains as to how much of Farrell's staff from Toronto comes as the Jays have given permission to Farrell's old staff to talk with other teams.

Here's the release from the Red Sox:

The Boston Red Sox today named Torey Lovullo as the bench coach on the club’s Major League coaching staff.

Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington and Manager John Farrell made the announcement.

Lovullo served as first base coach on Farrell’s staff in Toronto for the 2011-12 seasons.  He returns for his second stint in the Red Sox organization after managing Boston’s Triple-A Pawtucket affiliate in 2010.  While at the helm of the PawSox, he saw 21 of his players contribute to the big league club.

Lovullo, 47, managed for nine minor league seasons overall, compiling a 661-609 (.520) record.  He guided his clubs to four postseason appearances and two league championships.  Prior to joining the Red Sox organization in 2010, he managed from 2002-2009 in the Indians system, where Farrell was Director of Player Development from 2002-2006.  Lovullo led Single-A Columbus (2002), High-A Kinston (2003-04), Double-A Akron (2005), Triple-A Buffalo (2006-08), and Triple-A Columbus (2009).  Lovullo was named Baseball America Double-A Manager of the Year and Eastern League Manager of the Year in 2005 and also earned Carolina League Manager of the Year honors in 2004.  He joined the Cleveland organization in 2001 as a roving coordinator.

A fifth-round pick by the Detroit Tigers in the 1987 draft out of UCLA, Lovullo played parts of eight Major League seasons with the Tigers (1988-89), New York Yankees (1991), California Angels (1993), Seattle Mariners (1994), Oakland Athletics (1996), Indians (1998) and Philadelphia Phillies (1999).  Primarily a second baseman, he hit .224 (165-for-737) with 15 home runs and 60 RBI in 303 career Major League games.  Lovullo played a career-high 116 games with the Angels in 1993 when he was a teammate of Farrell.
