Hershey Bears 4, Connecticut Whale 3 (SO)

Hershey, PA, January 12, 2013 – The Connecticut Whale gained a standings point for the fourth straight game (2-0-1-1) Saturday night at Giant Center, but lost 4-3 in a shootout to the Hershey Bears.

CT WhaleThe Whale outshot Hershey 36-23 in the game, including 26-11 in the first two periods, but trailed 2-1 heading into the third before coming back to get the point.

Kelsey Tessier scored in the third period for the Whale, and Chad Kolarik had a shorthanded goal, but a Zach Hamill power-play tally wiped out a short-lived 3-2 Connecticut lead.

“In large part, I thought we outchanced them, but I don’t know that we brought our best team game for the entirety of the game,” Whale head coach Ken Gernander said.  It’s good that we came back, but ideally I’d like to have seen us press the issue a little bit harder in the first two periods.”

The Whale outshot the Bears 13-6 in a first period that was scoreless except for a 28-second span in which the team traded goals.

Kyle Jean gave the Whale a brief lead at 17:07 with his eighth goal of the year and third in the last two games.  Jean, who scored both Whale goals in a 2-0 home win over Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Sunday, took a feed from Andrew Yogan, just back up to the Whale from Greenville of the ECHL, got around Hershey defenseman Steve Oleksy on left wing and then put a backhander past Bear goaltender Philipp Grubauer.

Garrett Mitchell got that goal right back for Hershey at 17:35, forcing a shot from the bottom of the right circle through Whale netminder Jason Missiaen, who got his first AHL shutout with 35 saves in Sunday’s win.

The Bears then struck again on the first shift of the second period, and this time it was Mitchell finding Jonathan Kalinski for Kalinski’s first goal of the season.  That was on a shot from just below the left-wing faceoff dot past Missiaen’s catching glove, and that goal would be the only scoring of the second, despite the Whale having a 13-5 shots edge.

Tessier tied the game at 11:56 of the third with his fourth goal of the year, a tip-in of a Logan Pyett shot from near the blue line.  Then, after Kris Newbury was penalized for cross-checking at 13:18, Kolarik increased his team-leading goal total to 15 with his second shorthander of the season at 13:50.  Grubauer, making only his second AHL appearance of the year, stopped Kolarik’s first attempt with his pads, but Kolarik fought off Stafford to get to the rebound and snapped it in.

Just 54 seconds later, though, at 14:44, with Newbury still in the box, Hamill gunned a shot from the left faceoff dot past Missiaen to create a 3-3 tie that carried through to overtime.

After a scoreless OT, Stafford and Stan Galiev scored shootout goals for the Bears, and Kolarik was the only one of five Whale shooters to score on Grubauer, giving Hershey the two points.

The Whale and Bears battle again Sunday at Giant Center, in the Whale’s second of six straight road games, facing off at 5:00 PM.  All of the action of that game can be heard live on “Beethoven Radio” AM 1290 and on-line at www.ctwhale.com.  Video streaming is available at www.ahllive.com

The Whale’s next home game is Wednesday, January 23, a 7:00 game against the Adirondack Phantoms.  For that and all Whale home games, tickets start as low as $10 each ($12 each when tickets are purchased on the day of the game), at the Public Power Ticket Office at the XL Center, through TicketMaster Charge-by-Phone at 1-800-745-3000 and on-line at www.ticketmaster.com.

Video: UConn Women Run By Marquette, 85-51

Despite being shorthanded on Saturday afternoon, the UConn Huskies women's basketball team looked like, well the UConn women of old. And that proved to be bad for the Marquette Golden Eagles.

UConn guard Kelly Faris drives to the hoop against Marquette during the first half at the Al McGuire Center in Milwaukee Saturday afternoon. The Huskies opened up the game on a 21-3 run and never looked back on their way to an 85-51 win over the Golden Eagles in front of 2,684 at the Al McGuire Center in Milwaukee, WI.

UConn improves to 14-1 (2-1 Big East) while Marquette falls to 8-7 (0-2).

The Huskies were without their second leading scorer and leading rebounder Breanna Stewart who sprained her left ankle in practice. They also played most of the game without their All-American Bria Hartley who sprained her left ankle and sat out of the rest of the game.

Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis paced the Huskies with 24 points while Stefanie Dolson added 20 points and five rebounds. Brianna Banks came off the bench to add 12 points.

Kelly Faris had another one of her nice all-around games with 11 points, five rebounds, eight assists and five steals. Morgan Tuck returned to action and led the Huskies with nine rebounds to go along with seven points.

Marquettte was led by Sarinna Simmons' 19 points. Arlesia Moore was the next highest scorer with seven points while both Chelsie Butler and Cristina Bigica added six points.

Morse, Katie Young and Lauren Tibbs led the Golden Eagles with four rebounds each.

With UConn looking like a well-oiled machine early on, they made sure Marquette had no chance of winning this game. They moved the ball with ease within their offense, made the right cuts, etc, etc.

This is what they need to continue to do going forward. Play like that the rest of the way and big things could happen in Storrs, CT.

The Huskies return back home on Tuesday night when they'll host the nationally ranked Louisville Cardinals at the XL Center on Tuesday night. Tip is scheduled for 9 p.m.

Video: UConn Men Upset Notre Dame 65-58

I've been saying all along this season that once Big East play began, the UConn Huskies men's basketball team were going to give teams problems.

And that's exactly what happened on Saturday afternoon against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

University of Connecticut Huskies forward Tyler Olander, 10, blocks a shot by Notre Dame Fighting Irish forward Jack Cooley, 45, during the first half. Behind the strong play of Shabazz Napier and Tyler Olander, UConn was able to pull off the 65-58 upset of the Fighting Irish in front of 9,149 at Purcell Pavillion at the Joyce Center.

UConn improves to 12-3 (2-1 Big East) while Notre Dame falls to 14-2 (2-1).

The win by the Huskies stopped a Fighting Irish 12-game winning streak and a 17-game home winning streak. The last time the Irish lost at home, it was last season against UConn.

Napier led the way with 19 points and had five rebounds and four assists. Olander played by far his best game of the season on both ends of the floor. He finished with a career-high 16 points and seven rebounds.

Ryan Boatright, who playing in front of a lot of family and friends who made the two hour trip from Chicago to South Bend, didn't disappoint them with 14 points, three rebounds and five assists. DeAndre Daniels led the Huskies with nine rebounds to go along with eight points.

Eric Atkins paced Notre Dame with 18 points and four assists. Jack Cooley added 14 points and nine rebounds while Jerian Grant had 11 points and four assists.

So how did UConn win this game?

They played great defensively and once again outrebounded their opponent. From various media reports and the television broadcast, UConn head coach Kevin Ollie implemented a new rebounding drill. Well we can say it it has worked well as UConn outrebounded Notre Dame 34-28.

This was the Olander we've been waiting for all season long. He was strong offensively and defensively he was outstanding especially given he had to cover the double-double machine of Cooley. The help defense was great too.

UConn needs to continue this type of play as their schedule doesn't get any kinder to them. They'll have a short turn around as they return home on Monday night to host the Louisville Cardinals at the XL Center. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m.
