Nike Basketball Honors MLK Day

Nike MLK Day Collection

Nike recognizes the importance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and the power of sports to impact society.

Athletes at all levels have the unique ability to extend their voice beyond sports. This is true for Kevin Durant, who provides creative inspiration for the Nike Black History Month product collection based on his commitment to giving back to his hometown of Seat Pleasant, Md.

The 2013 Nike BHM Collection will debut in stores and online beginning January 26, but the first glimpse of the product will occur during pro basketball's nine MLK Day commemorative games on January 21.

A consistent design aesthetic weaves through each shoe, with a color palette including black and grey highlighted in orange. The color orange is particularly meaningful with its bold hue and tie to Nike’s DNA since its 1972 inception.

Nike Basketball shoes include special versions of the KD VLEBRON X and KOBE 8 SYSTEM; all three featuring black, grey and orange with the signature Nike BHM print. Kobe will wear his BHM KOBE 8 SYSTEM shoe as Los Angeles takes on Chicago. Additional Nike BHM styles including the Hyperdunk 2012 will also be worn on court January 21, and Kevin Durant will wear his BHM KD V on January 22 as Oklahoma City takes on the Los Angeles Clippers.

The 2013 Nike Black History Month Collection mantra “Be Bold. Be True.” celebrates athletes who are fearless in action and fueled by a purpose.

In keeping with a tradition of honoring organizations that give back and inspire youth, NIKE, Inc. will make a financial contribution to Big Brothers Big Sisters of America with proceeds from the Nike BHM Collection.

Ravens beat Patriots, Harbaugh Brothers Face Off in Super Bowl XLVII

Head coach John Harbaugh of the Baltimore Ravens hugs head coach Bill Belichick of the New England Patriots after winning the 2013 AFC Championship game at Gillette Stadium on January 20, 2013 in Foxboro, Massachusetts.

The AFC Championship Game between the New England Patriots and the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, MA was a series of peaks and valleys.  In the end, there were more valleys and a disappointing 28-13 loss to end the season.

At times it would seem the Patriots offense would be peaking and they’d start moving the ball only to bottom out and have a drive stalled with incomplete passes or failed red zone opportunities.

Then it would seem as it the Patriots defense would peak and be playing aggressive only to turn around and start to get picked apart by Baltimore QB Joe Flacco.

For most of the afternoon the game could have gone either way but there was a huge momentum shift late in the third quarter and early in the 4th quarter that gave the Ravens a 21-13 lead after trailing 13-7 at the half.

In a period of 10:01 on the game clock the Ravens scored 21 unanswered points and pulled away from the Patriots while building a 28-13 lead on three Flacco TD passes.  Two went to All-World WR Anquan Bolden, who size and strength just proved too much for the overmatched New England secondary.  And the third went to TE Dennis Pitta who killed New England most of the afternoon with little shake routes over the middle.  Flacco kept finding him and the Ravens kept chipping away at the Patriots defense.

The defense was severely hampered when CB Aqib Talib came up lame with a pulled hamstring about midway through the first quarter.  It severely changed the way defense was able to cover the Baltimore receivers, especially Bolden.  With Talib on the field he matches up very well with guys like Bolden but it doesn’t help when he can’t get on the field.

As for the offense they struggled mightily, especially in the red zone coming away with two field goals and a touchdown in three first half tries.  There was also some sketchy clock management in the closing seconds of the half.  If Tom Brady had called time out after he slide he had 17 seconds and at least two shots at points, maybe three.  But he decided he wanted to try to save the time out and spike the ball and ended up running the clock to :04 seconds and forcing the field goal opportunity as a last ditch chance for points.

The end of the football season always leaves me a bit melancholy compared to other sports, it just seems to short.  One day a week for four maybe five months if you’re lucky and then it’s gone, especially in a one and done playoff situation.

The team was good this year, not great.  At times they played both above and below the expectations of the fans and themselves. While 2013 looks promising we also have to realize that next preseason Brady turns 36 and the window closes a little more not only on his career but possibly championship opportunities in Foxboro.

As they said in “Goodfellas” when they tell Jimmy they had to whack Tommy, “well that’s that, and there wasn’t anything we could do about it.”

Providence Bruins 4, Connecticut Whale 1

Providence, RI, January 20, 2013 – David Warsofsky had a goal and an assist Sunday for the Providence Bruins, who outshot the Connecticut Whale 38-15 at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center Providence on the way to a 4-1 win.

CT WhaleJ.T. Miller scored the only Whale goal.  Ryan Spooner and Justin Florek had two assists each for the Bruins.

The Whale led for much of the first period, after Miller scored on Connecticut’s first shot of the game at 4:26.  After Sean Collins lost the puck in the left-wing corner, Brandon Mashinter was able to get it to Miller between the hash marks, and Miller buried a slap shot behind Bruin goaltender Niklas Svedberg (14 saves).  Mashinter picked up his first point in three games with the Whale with the lone assist on the goal.

Providence responded, though, with two goals in a span of 1:25 late in the period.

Bruin goal-scoring leader Jamie Tardif got his 18th of the year at 16:32.  Spooner found Tardif  unchecked in front of the Whale net, and Tardif pounded a high shot past Whale netminder Jason Missiaen (34 saves).

Then, at 17:57, Warsofsky gave Providence a 2-1 lead with a long snapshot from the middle of the blue line that went through a screen and past Missiaen.

The only goal of the second period was a Bruin power-play score at 7:34.  With Kris Newbury in the penalty box for interference, Warsofsky fed a pass from right to left across the slot, and Carter Camper’s quick shot eluded Missiaen’s diving save attempt.

Providence then put it away with a Kyle MacKinnon goal with 5:11 left in the third.  Graham Mink passed the puck from behind the net to MacKinnon in the slot, and Missiaen had no chance on MacKinnon’s quick shot.

Sunday’s game was the last of six straight on the road for the Whale, who will start a run of six straight and ten out of 12 at home this Wednesday, January 23, with a 7:00 game against the Adirondack Phantoms at the XL Center.  For that and all Whale home games, tickets start as low as $10 each ($12 each when tickets are purchased on the day of the game), at the Public Power Ticket Office at the XL Center, through TicketMaster Charge-by-Phone at 1-800-745-3000 and on-line at www.ticketmaster.com.

Connecticut Whale 4, Portland Pirates 1

Portland, ME, January 19, 2013 – Chad Kolarik and Kris Newbury had a goal and an assist apiece, and Jason Missiaen made 32 saves, to lead the Connecticut Whale to a 4-1 win over the Portland Pirates Saturday night at the Cumberland County Civic Center.

CT WhaleThree of the Whale’s goals were on special teams, as the power play was 2/3 and Connecticut also scored a shorthander.

“Huge bounce-back game, we needed those two points, especially after the loss (Friday) night (a 4-2 defeat in Springfield), where we didn’t play very well,” Kolarik said.  “We showed a lot of emotion tonight and we worked their defensemen down low, and the two power-play goals were huge for us, to get the power play going is good.”

The Whale started slowly in the game, as Portland got 11 of the first 13 shots, and the Pirates got on the scoreboard first at 8:49 of the opening period.

Brett Hextall fed a pass across the slot to Ethan Werek on the right-wing side, and Werek was able to cut in and put a shot over Missiaen’s stick-side shoulder.

The Whale replied on their first power play of the game at 13:38, as Newbury scored his fifth goal in three games.  Kolarik sent Newbury down the left side with a pass, and Newbury sent a perfectly-placed snapshot into the top corner on Pirate netminder Mark Visentin’s catching-glove side.

Connecticut then took its first lead of the game 1:21 into the second period, scoring on a four-on-three power-play.

Logan Pyett sent a feed from the blue line to Newbury, stationed in the right-wing circle, and Newbury one-touched it to the front of the net to Kolarik, who deflected it perfectly through Visentin (21 saves).  The goal was Kolarik’s team-high 16th of the season.

Shayne Wiebe scored his first career AHL goal, a shorthander, at 4:32 of the third period to make it a 3-1 Whale lead.  A Portland pass got through defenseman Michael Stone near the blue line, and Wiebe beat Visentin to it at the bottom of the left faceoff circle and flicked it into the far side of the net.

The shorthanded goal was the Whale’s third in two games in Portland on the week, as the Connecticut penalty-kill scored twice in a 6-1 win over the Pirates on Tuesday night.

Kelsey Tessier completed the scoring at 8:26, finishing a partial breakaway with a move to the backhand after taking a long feed from Blake Parlett.

The Whale are back in action Sunday, traveling to Providence for a 3:05 PM game against the Bruins.  All of the action of that game can be heard live on “Beethoven Radio” AM 1290 and on-line at www.ctwhale.com.  Video streaming is available at www.ahllive.com

Sunday’s game is the last of six straight on the road for the Whale, who will start a run of six straight and ten out of 12 at home this Wednesday, January 23, with a 7:00 game against the Adirondack Phantoms at the XL Center.

Video: Dolson Leads UConn Women Past Syracuse, 87-62

All of the hard work that Stefanie Dolson put in during the offseason has really paid off for her and the UConn Huskies.

UConn center Stefanie Dolson shoots for two of her 13 first-half points against Syracuse at the XL Center in Hartford SaturdayDolson scored a career-high 25 points, including the 1,000th of her career, plus seven rebounds and six assists to help the Huskies past the Syracuse Orange 87-62 in front of 14,786 at the XL Center in Hartford, CT on Saturday afternoon.

UConn improves to 16-1 (4-1 Big East) while the Orange fall to 15-2 (3-1).

Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis also added 25 points, nine rebounds and four steals. Breanna Stewart returned from an ankle injury to play her hometown team and had 20 points and six rebounds.

Kelly Faris had a nice game with eight points, nine rebounds and three assists. Caroline Doty tied Dolson's team-high of six assists to go along with her two points.

Carmen Tyson-Thomas came off the bench to lead the Orange with 12 points. Brianna Butler had 11 points while both Brittney Sykes and Rachel Coffey added 10 points a piece.

Shakeya Leary led Syracuse with seven rebounds and had seven points. The Orange's leading score Kayla Alexander battled foul trouble all game and finished with just four points and three rebounds in 11 minutes.

The Huskies made sure to find Dolson inside all game long and that helped get Alexander in foul trouble. And without Alexander, the Orange weren't the same team that had gotten off to the 15-1 start.

I've definitely been impressed with the improvement of Dolson. She looks nothing like the Dolson of the past two years. And they're going to need this Dolson to achieve their goal of winning another national championship.

It was also nice to see Stewart return to action. It also looked like she didn't miss a beat after being out for the past week with a sprained ankle.

Speaking of sprained ankles, Bria Hartley injured hers yet again and sat out the final eight minutes of the game. The Huskies are definitely going to need Hartley to be a quick healer with a big test against the only undefeated team in women's basketball on Monday night.

That undefeated team is the Duke Blue Devils who will visit Gampel Pavilion in UConn's annual Martin Luther King Day game. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m.
