Naismith Awards

Here's the release from UConn about four UConn Huskies women's basketball players being in the running for the 2013 Naismith Women's College Player of the Year.

ATLANTA – The UConn women’s basketball team has four Huskies in the top 30 list for 2013 Naismith Women’s College Player of the Year as announced by the Atlanta Tipoff Club on Wednesday. Stefanie Dolson, Kelly Faris, Bria Hartley and Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis were selected as top 30 candidates by the Atlanta Tipoff Club’s Board of Selectors, which based its criteria on player performance during this year’s college basketball season. Connecticut’s leads the way with four players, while Baylor, Notre Dame, Duke, Maryland and Penn State each have a pair of players on the list.

In late March, the Naismith Trophy voting academy will narrow down the pack to four finalists. The Naismith Women’s College Player of the Year presented by AT&T will be awarded to one female athlete on April 8, 2013, in New Orleans, La.

Mosqueda-Lewis leads the Huskies with 17.1 points per game and averages 6.4 rebounds per contest, while Dolson is second on the squad in scoring and rebounding with 14.0 points per game and 6.4 boards per contest. Dolson currently leads the nation in field goal percentage shooting 60.0 percent per game, while Mosqueda-Lewis is third in the country from behind the arc with a 50.3 percentage. Faris is having an outstanding senior campaign averaging 10.8 points and 5.3 rebounds per game and leads the team in assists (4.1 apg) and steals (2.8 spg). Both Mosqueda-Lewis and Faris scored their 1,000th career point on Saturday against Seton Hall.  Hartley is averaging 9.0 points and 3.1 rebounds per game, while she is second on the team with 3.5 assists per contest.

Three Huskies Selected to Ann Meyers Drysdale Award Midseason Watch List

I missed this press release from UConn yesterday but I figured I'd still pass it along.

ST. LOUIS – UConn women’s basketball standouts Stefanie Dolson, Kelly Faris and Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis were selected to the U.S. Basketball Writers Association’s 2013 Ann Meyers Drysdale Award Midseason Watch List as announced by the USBWA on Tuesday afternoon. Members of the association's board of directors chose the players to be included on the list as contenders for the Ann Meyers Drysdale Award.

UConn Huskies women's basketballThe award is to be presented to the women's national player of the year by its namesake at the USBWA women's awards press conference on April 7 in the interview room of the New Orleans Arena, 3:30 p.m. local time prior to the start of the NCAA Women's Final Four semifinals, which is a change from the morning breakfast in past seasons.

Connecticut has the highest number of student-athletes on the list with three and the BIG EAST leads all conferences with five as Syracuse’s Kayla Alexander and Notre Dame’s Skylar Diggins join the three Huskies.

Mosqueda-Lewis leads the Huskies with 17.0 points per game and averages 6.2 rebounds per contest, while Dolson is second on the squad in scoring and rebounding with 14.0 points per game and 6.4 boards per contest. Dolson currently leads the nation in field goal percentage shooting 60.9 percent per game, while Mosqueda-Lewis is third in the country from behind the arc with a 49.0 percentage. Faris is having an outstanding senior campaign averaging 10.7 points and 5.1 rebounds per game and leads the team in assists (4.1 apg) and steals (2.7 spg). Both Mosqueda-Lewis and Faris scored their 1,000th career point on Saturday against Seton Hall.

Five Ann Meyers Drysdale National Players of the Week from this season are featured: Stanford's Oguwmike, Connecticut's Dolson, Texas A&M's Bone, Penn State's Lucas, and Baylor's Griner. One Canadian native was chosen in Syracuse's Alexander.

While these standout players are the leading contenders to be named to the USBWA's women's All-America team and as finalists for the Ann Meyers Drysdale Award, all Division I women's players remain eligible for postseason honors from the USBWA. Voting for both the women's All-America team and Ann Meyers Drysdale Award are done directly by the membership with the All-America team is to be announced in late March.

Gigantic Sox and Dawgs 2013 MLB Preview – Day 4 – AL Central

Welcome to the Gigantic Sox and Dawgs 2013 MLB preview.  Over the next few days you will get a team by team look at its key players, new faces, their potential MVP, Cy Young and Rookie of the Year candidates, their possible starting lineup and rotation as well as a quick summary.

2013 SOX & Dawgs AL Central PreviewWe will also select a MVP candidate and Cy Young candidate for each team no matter what their predicted team outcome is.

This preview was sculpted over the off season with some mild tweaking as we went along prior to publication.  It comes from a culmination of reading many hours of baseball research.

I hope you enjoy this look at the upcoming season.  I know everyone will not agree with me and that’s fine put it in the comments or hit me up on Twitter or via email.  I can assure you I'll most likely have an argument for each and every objection that you could possibly raise.

Yesterday we looked at the NL Central, Sunday was the NL West, Monday was the AL West and today it’s the AL Central.

To continue reading, click on the read more button below if you're on the home page.

American League Central

Detroit is the class of the division and has been the last couple years and will be again in 2013.  But as Minnesota flounders and Chicago isn’t what it once was, we should start to see the resurgence in Kansas City and Cleveland.  There is no time like the present for the Royals to make a jump and contend this season.

Detroit Tigers1. Detroit – Manager Jim Leyland (8th year/22nd overall)

The Tigers are on a mission and that is to get to the World Series and win.  The Lineup 2-3-4-5 is absolutely terrifying with the return of DH Victor Martinez and addition of Torii Hunter to go along with Prince Fielder and Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera.  The starting pitching and offense are solid and will make up for the lack of depth in the bullpen and the average defense.  Looks like Leyland is looking at rookie Bruce Rondon to close and he will be an important piece in solidifying the back end of the pen.

Justin Verlander #35 of the Detroit Tigers looks on against the San Francisco Giants during Game One of the Major League Baseball World Series at AT&T Park on October 24, 2012 in San Francisco, California. Home Field: Comerica Park

Key Players: 1B Prince Fielder; 3B Miguel Cabrera; C Alex Avila; P Justin Verlander; RP Bruce Rondon

MVP Candidate: 1B Prince Fielder and 3B Miguel Cabrera

Cy Young Candidate: P Justin Verlander

ROY Candidate: RP Bruce Rondon

Key Additions: OF Torii Hunter; P Kyle Lobstein; 2B Jeff Kobernus; C Ramon Cabrera

Possible lineup: Jackson CF; Hunter RF; Cabrera 3B; Fielder 1B; V. Martinez DH; Dirks LF; Peralta SS; Avila C; Infante 2B

Possible rotation: Verlander; Fister; Scherzer; Sanchez; Porcello

Kansas City Royals2. Kansas City – Manager Ned Yost (4th year/10th overall)

The Royals are making another jump and if the rest of the division isn’t careful this could be a team that will sneak up on you.  Feeling like they had a good lineup but needed pitching they made a deal with Tampa Bay for starters Wade Davis and James Shields to improve in this area.  They are on a win now mission with young stars and budding pitching staff but the arms need to not only hold up but produce results.

Eric Hosmer #35 of the Kansas City Royals rounds the bases after hitting a home run during the 7th inning of the game against the Texas Rangers at Kauffman Stadium on September 6, 2012 in Kansas City, Missouri. Home Field: Kauffman Stadium

Key Players: 1B Eric Hosmer; 3B Mike Moustakas; DH Billy Butler; P James Shields; P Wade Davis

MVP Candidate: 1B Eric Hosmer

Cy Young Candidate: P James Shields

ROY Candidate: P Yordano Ventura

Key Additions: SP James Shields; SP Wade Davis; C George Kottaras; RP Guillermo Moscoso; SP Ervin Santana; RP Chris Volstad

Possible lineup: Cain CF; Escobar SS; Gordon LF; Butler DH; Moustakas 3B; Perez C; Hosmer 1B; Francouer RF; Getz 2B

Possible Rotation: Shields; Guthrie; Davis; Santana; Chen

Cleveland Indians3. Cleveland – Manager Terry Francona (1st year/13th overall)

The Indians made a dugout change bringing in former Red Sox and Phillies skipper Terry Francona as the new pilot.  Francona doesn’t need to win now but he needs to see improvement.  He has a team that is strong up the middle with C Carlos Santana, 2B Jason Kipnis, SS Asdrubal Cabrera and newly acquired CF Michael Bourn, but lacks pitching depth especially in the rotation.  He could also use some offensive help and hopes that bringing in Bourn, Nick Swisher and Mark Reynolds will help in that department.

Carlos Santana #41 of the Cleveland Indians celebrates after hitting a walk-off solo home run in the ninth inning to defeat the Minnesota Twins 6-5 at Progressive Field on September 23, 2011 in Cleveland, Ohio. Home Field: Progressive Field

Key Players: C Carlos Santana; SS Asdrubal Cabrera; CF Michael Bourn; 2B Jason Kipnis; P Justin Masterson

MVP Candidate: C Carlos Santana

Cy Young Candidate: P Justin Masterson

ROY Candidate: SP Trevor Bauer

Key Additions: Mgr Terry Francona; RF Nick Swisher; 1B Mark Reynolds INF/DH Mike Aviles; OF Drew Stubbs; SP Trevor Bauer; SP Brett Myers; RP Matt Albers; OF Ben Francisco; P Scott Kazmir; DH Jason Giambi; SP Daisuke Matsuzaka; CF Michael Bourn

Possible lineup: Bourn CF; Brantley LF; Cabrera SS; Swisher 1B; Santana C; Kipnis 2B; Reynolds DH; Chisenhall 3B; Stubbs RF

Possible rotation: Masterson; Jimenez; Myers; McAllister; Bauer

Chicago White Sox4. Chicago – Manager Robin Ventura (2nd year)

The biggest thing for the White Sox to overcome is the fact the have a lot of aging players in key spots.  Jake Peavy (32); Paul Konerko (37); Alex Rios (32) and Adam Dunn (33) are among them and last year this team faded horribly down the stretch.  The good part of this team is the emergence of Dayan Viciedo and Alejandro De Aza plus that good bullpen.

Paul Konerko #14 of the Chicago White Sox bats against the New York Yankees at U.S. Cellular Field on August 22, 2012 in Chicago, IllinoisHome Field: U.S. Cellular Field

Key Players: LF Dayan Viciedo; SS Alexei Ramirez, 1B Paul Konerko; DH Adam Dunn; P Chris Sale

MVP Candidate: LF Dayan Viciedo

Cy Young Candidate: P Chris Sale

ROY Candidate: OF Trayce Thompson

Key Additions: 3B Jeff Keppinger; 1B Lars Anderson; RP Matt Lindstrom; RP Zach Stewart

Possible lineup: De Aza CF; Keppinger 3B; Dunn DH; Konerko 1B; Rios RF; Viciedo LF; Ramirez SS; Flowers C; Beckham 2B

Possible rotation: Sale; Peavy; Danks; Floyd; Quintana

Minnesota Twins5. Minnesota – Manager Ron Gardenhire (12th year)

They had a healthy return of 1B Justin Morneau and C Joe Mauer in 2012 and they need to have that repeated.  The pair also need to rediscover their power as Morneau last hit 20+ HR in 2009 and Mauer has only 22 HRs in last 3 years after hitting 28 in ’09. This team is against it because the pitching will really decide their fate and it doesn’t look good from here.  In 2012 the starting pitching was the worst in baseball and there looks to be very little recovery there and the bullpen is just weak from top to bottom.  They need a lot of help but it’s not coming this season.

Joe Mauer #7 of the Minnesota Twins rounds the bases after hitting a solo home run against the Chicago White Sox during the first inning on September 16, 2012 at Target Field in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Home Field: Target Field

Key Players: C Joe Mauer; 1B Justin Morneau; DH Ryan Doumit; P Vance Worley; RF Josh Willingham

MVP Candidate: C Joe Mauer and 1B Justin Morneau

Cy Young Candidate: P Vance Worley

ROY Candidate: P Kyle Gibson; OF Aaron Hicks

Key Additions: P Kevin Correia; P Vance Worley: P Mike Pelfrey*; IF Tommy Field

Possible lineup: Mastroianni CF; Carroll 2B; Mauer C; Willingham LF; Morneau 1B; Doumit DH; Parmelee RF; Plouffe; Flourimon SS

Possible rotation: Worley; Correia; Hendriks; Duensing; Blackburn*

* Pelfrey had Tommy John surgery in May 2012 and will most likely miss start of the season and Nick Blackburn is a candidate to replace him until his return.

Tomorrow, in Day 5, we will preview the NL East.

Video: UConn Women Cruise Past Pitt, 76-36

Pittsburgh Panthers head coach Agnus Beranato shouts instructions to he players during the first half against UConn at the XL Center Tuesday night.

Pittsburgh Panthers head coach Agnus Berenato gave UConn Huskies assistant women's basketball coach Shea Ralph her start in college coaching. I'm sure Berenato wishes she never left.

It's been a long while since the Panthers have won a Big East game. And on Tuesday night, the UConn women extended that Big East losing streak to 34 games with a 76-36 win in front of 9,428 in the XL Center regular season finale in Hartford, CT.

The Huskies improve to 26-2 (13-1 Big East) while the Panthers fall to 9-18 (0-14).

Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis once again the led way for the Huskies with a double-double of 19 points and 13 rebounds to go along with five assists. Breanna Stewart's improvement from her slump continued as she had 15 points, nine rebounds, four assists, four blocked shots and three steals.

Stefanie Dolson added 14 points and seven rebounds while Kelly Faris had 11 points and fell one rebound short of a double-double with nine. Bria Hartley led the Huskies with six assists.

Despite shooting 4-of-22, Brianna Kiesel led the Panthers with 11 points and six rebounds. Asia Logan was the only other member of Pitt to hit double-digits with 10 points.

This was a sloppy game at the start as both teams had trouble holding on to the ball.

Pitt kept it close early on as they held an 8-7 lead before nine straight points by the Huskies allowed them to take control. With a 24-11 lead later in the half, they closed out the half on a 13-2 run.

It was more of the same in the second half.

Honestly, despite the 40 point difference in the score, this wasn't UConn's best game.

As I had said both teams were sloppy and normally while UConn does commit turnovers, they usually take care better of the ball. Maybe it was playing down to their opponent. You could see the frustration on Geno Auriemma's face.

But as things settled down, UConn got into a nice rhythm. Stewart continued to play more aggressively. You can really tell she's been working her tail off in practice. She's used to being the dominant player but this is a whole nother level of basketball.

This could be the last time these two teams meet with Pitt leaving for the ACC along with Syracuse next year. I'm pretty sure Pitt is just happy with that not having to face UConn anymore.

The Huskies finish out their season with two road games.

The first one comes on Saturday at high noon when they travel to Tampa, FL for a matchup with the South Florida Bulls.

Red Sox Spring News & Notes – 2/26

Boston Red Sox third baseman Will Middlebrooks, right, leaps as he misses a throw from catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia, not pictured, allowing Tampa Bay Rays' Desmond Jennings, left, to score from third base during the third inning of an exhibition spring training baseball game, Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013, in Fort Myers, Fla

It's hard for bloggers of the Boston Red Sox to give their own assessment of the team so far in during spring training because we aren't there. We have to rely on what the media tells us.

That is unless NESN has coverage of the game or we are fortunate enough to be able to go to some games at Fenway South. At that point, we will be able to see how pitchers and players are doing. Sure we can read the box scores and read the reports, but how does one make an honest judgment about a player unless you've seen them.

Fortunately for everyone, the Red Sox will be on NESN on Wednesday night against the Baltimore Orioles. And while we don't know what's going with the starting nine, we will get a look at the following pitchers:

Franklin Morales (1 inning) followed by Drake Britton (3 innings), Koji Uehara, Chris Carpenter, Daniel Bard, Anthony Carter and Pedro Beato.

Of that group, I think Morales and Uehara are the only ones guaranteed to make the team. Bard will have to show that he has regained his form of old. I do think Carpenter and Beato will figure into the bullpen plans at some point in the season if someone gets injured.

Of course, that's just my opinion. And that's based off the fact that you aren't sending down Uehara and Morales is a valuable lefty option out of the pen.

Whether you knew this or not, I was around the game of baseball for almost 10 years spending time working in the minor leagues. So I've seen players develop and some who haven't. So I do know what I'm looking at when evaluating.

That'll also make you understand why the Red Sox have brought former players like Jason Varitek, Pedro Martinez, Tim Wakefield and now Mike Lowell back to camp. I'm no expert like them. But having them teach the younger players will only make this team better down the line.

And that's all we want here in Red Sox Nation. Another winning team. It's been since 2009 when the Red Sox last went to the playoffs and that year they were swept out by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

So if it takes bringing former players back to help, by all means do it. I'd like to see that drought end this year. And from the looks of it (or what we've read), the Red Sox could just do that this year.
