Now, we worry

Dustin Pedroia #15 of the Boston Red Sox reacts to a strike during his seventh inning at bat against the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium on April 12, 2014 in the Bronx borough of New York City.

Last week, I published a post titled “What, we worry?” and urged Red Sox fans not to worry about the team’s subpar performance right now because, generally, the season is young and anything could happen. With that said, it’s difficult not to think that the forthcoming news about Dustin Pedroia‘s wrist injury has the weight of the season riding on it.

One characteristic of Red Sox teams under Ben Cherington’s tenure as General Manager is depth throughout the 40 man roster. Last season, at shortstop and third base, Cherington gave the team four viable MLB-ready options: Stephen Drew, Will Middlebrooks, Jose Iglesias, and Xander Bogaerts. Many other clubs would throttle puppies to have that much depth on the left side of the infield; and, as it turned out, the Red Sox needed all of it to survive the season and the playoffs.

But roster depth has limits. Despite how well Cherington has shaped Red Sox rosters to give the team depth, the impending news on Pedroia’s injury feels like the team is approaching a breaking point. The loss of Shane Victorino has been covered well by Grady Sizemore and Jackie Bradley Jr., two pleasant surprises for the Red Sox this early in the season. But Will Middlebrooks going on the disabled list was too much for the roster depth to swallow, prompting the team to acquire Ryan Roberts.

There are concerns about Koji Uehara‘s health, but for now, Edward Mujica has the closer position covered.

In the meantime, production at left field has become a point of concern with Jonny Gomes and Daniel Nava underperforming. In Nava’s case, “underperforming” doesn’t accurately describe his .140 batting average. Nava was hitting .360 with a .485 OBP at this point last season, so his drop off now is simply unacceptable.

This is everything Cherington has had to worry about before Pedroia was scratched from the lineup last night and sent to Boston to get an MRI on his left wrist.

Pedroia is irreplaceable. When healthy or, as we witnessed last year, playing through a minor injury, Pedroia is a top of the order hitter who gets on base and drives in runs – and he’s a vacuum cleaner at second base, taking away hits with diving stops. Hopefully, Pedroia’s MRI comes back negative and he’ll only need 2-3 weeks rest before returning to the lineup because there’s not much the Red Sox can do to recover from such a blow. No team, whether or not they were constructed by Ben Cherington, has the roster depth to withstand the loss of such a player.

The best plan I can think of if Pedroia is lost for a significant amount of time is to sign Stephen Drew, move Bogaerts to third base, and shift Middlebrooks to second base when he returns. Middlebrooks has great range but a lackluster arm, and with the shorter throw from second to first he’ll be a better defender. Drew won’t replace Pedroia at the plate, but he’s a superior fielder with more range than Bogaerts. And moving Bogaerts to third base has him covering less ground on the field while keeping his bat in the lineup. This plan would help keep the Red Sox in contention until Pedroia returns – provided that the team doesn’t suffer anymore injuries to key players.

Depending on the outcome of Pedroia’s MRI, the Red Sox could be looking at a situation where 1/3 of their starting lineup is out for over a month at the same time, and it’s tough for any team to recover from that. The only bright spot in this scenario is that these injuries are happening in April, so Red Sox staying in contention is dependent on giving other teams five months to develop injury problems of their own. You hate to depend upon luck, especially when the Red Sox have been so unlucky thus far in 2014, but sometimes that all you have.

And we’ll be pretty lucky if Pedroia’s injury isn’t serious, since even he can’t play through this one.

Video: Overturned Call The Difference in Yankees 3-2 Win Over Red Sox

Boston Herald, NY Post and NY Daily News sports covers for Monday, April 14, 2014

Instant replay has seen its share of good and bad over the past few weeks of the 2014 season.

The Boston Red Sox saw it go against them on Saturday earning an apology from MLB. And on Sunday night, an overturned call cost them their manager and the game.

Francisco Cervelli‘s fielder’s choice RBI in the 4th inning turned out to be the difference as the New York Yankees beat the Red Sox 3-2.

Cervelli had initially been called out on a bang-bang play at first base but Joe Girardi challenged the call. After replay, the call was overturned allowing the run to be scored.

Jonathan Herrera, who was filling in for an injured Dustin Pedroia, knocked in the first run for the Red Sox with a single. Mike Napoli had other RBI with a solo home run. Grady Sizemore along with Napoli had two hits each to lead the Red Sox.

Felix Doubront started this one and while not at his best still managed to pitch into the 7th inning and keep his team in the game.

IceCaps End Wolf Pack’s Winning Streak, 6-2

St. John’s, Newfoundland, April 13, 2014 – The Hartford Wolf Pack’s seven-game winning streak, which tied the second-longest in team history, was snapped Sunday at Mile One Centre, in a 6-2 loss to the St. John’s IceCaps.

Hartford Wolf PackJohn Albert scored twice for St. John’s, which earned a split of a back-to-back set with the Wolf Pack after a 7-2 loss to the Pack on Saturday night, and Carl Klingberg had a goal and two assists.

Danny Kristo had a goal and an assist for the Wolf Pack, who also got a power-play goal from Chris McCarthy, his first goal as a pro, to open the scoring, only to see St. John’s get the next five goals of the game.

“They just came hard,” Kristo said of the IceCaps.  “It was good start, we had the power-play goal, got out to the lead, but they came right back, scored a couple there, and then it was pretty much downhill the rest of the game.  I thought we made a couple of good pushes to try and come back, but they played strong today.”

St. John’s took two early penalties, and the Wolf Pack scored on the second man advantage, with Adam Lowry in the penalty box for tripping.  St. John’s goaltender Tyler Beskorowany (27 saves) stopped a Kristo shot from the right-wing side, but the rebound went right to McCarthy in the left circle and McCarthy, playing his sixth game with the Wolf Pack, banged it through Beskorowany and into the net.

The IceCaps would respond with three goals before the first period was out, though, starting with a Blair Riley strike at 8:34, only 1:37 after McCarthy’s goal.  Kyle MacKinnon won the puck in the right wing corner and wrapped it around the opposite post, and Riley deflected it past Wolf Pack starting goaltender David LeNeveu.

Albert gave St. John’s the lead with his 26th goal of the season at 14:19, jamming home a second rebound from right on top of LeNeveu, after Zach Redmond put the puck at the net from the right point.

Kael Mouillierat made it a two-goal St. John’s advantage on the IceCaps’ first power play at 18:35, with Conor Allen off for slashing.  Mouillierat’s shot from the top of the right circle got by the stick side of LeNeveu, who was being screened by Klingberg.

The Wolf Pack replaced LeNeveu with Dov Grumet-Morris to start the second period, and the first half of the second was scoreless, before the IceCaps broke the game open with two goals in a span of 55 seconds starting at 10:01.

Klingberg made it a 4-1 St. John’s lead at 10:01, after Eric O’Dell got by the Wolf Pack’s J.T. Miller on left wing and fed a perfect backhanded pass to Klingberg, who deflected the puck under the crossbar behind Grumet-Morris.

Then at 10:56, in a delayed-penalty situation, Klingberg flung the puck at the net from just inside the blue line, and Jerome Samson deflected it past Grumet-Morris for a 5-1 St. John’s lead.

The Wolf Pack stopped the run of five straight IceCap goals at 12:46, on a five-on-three power play.  Kristo took a pass at the left point, moved to the top of the circles and fired a shot past Beskorowany’s catching glove, increasing Kristo’s team-leading goal total to 24 on the year.

Hartford could get no closer, though, and Albert completed the scoring with his second of the game at 13:57 of the third, as Kris Fredheim’s shot from the right point hit Albert and redirected into the net.

The Wolf Pack finish the season with home games this Friday night, April 18 against the Springfield Falcons and Saturday, April 19 vs. the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.  Both games face off at 7:00 PM, and Friday’s game is the last chance this season for fans to enjoy $1 hot dogs and $2 beers through the start of the second period, presented by Marc’s Appliance Warehouse, located at 75 Prospect Ave., Hartford, CT.

Tickets for both of the last two games are on sale now at the Public Power Ticket Office at the XL Center, on-line at www.hartfordwolfpack.com and by phone at (877) 522-8499.  Wolf Pack tickets start as low as $12 for youth 12 years old or younger.  To speak with a representative about season or group tickets, call (855) 762-6451.

NY Daily News, NY Post and Newsday sports covers for Sunday, April 13, 2014

If the wind is blowing to right field and a pitcher makes a mistake, you’re usually in for a long afternoon at Yankee Stadium.

That’s exactly what happened to the Boston Red Sox as the New York Yankees hit five home runs in their 7-4 win on Saturday afternoon.

Brian McCann hit two home runs. Carlos Beltran, Alfonso Soriano and Kelly Johnson had the others for the victors. Four of those home runs came off of Red Sox starter John Lackey who took his first loss of the season.

A.J. Pierzynski had two hits including a two-run homer off of Yanks starter Hiroki Kuroda. Mike Carp had the other RBIs for the Red Sox with a two-run single in the 7th.
