UConn’s Breanna Stewart Named Honda Sports Award Winner For Basketball

STORRS, Conn. – Sophomore Breanna Stewart (Syracuse, N.Y.) of the University of Connecticut was named the Honda Sports Award winner for Basketball as announced by Chris Voelz, Executive Director of THE Collegiate Women Sports Awards (CWSA) today.

UConn Huskies women's basketball player Breanna Stewart poses for a picture before the 2014 Blue/White Spring Game at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, CT.

UConn Huskies women’s basketball player Breanna Stewart poses for a picture before the 2014 Blue/White Spring Football Game at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, CT.

The Honda Sports Award is presented annually by the CWSA to the top women athletes in 12 NCAA- sanctioned sports and signifies “the best of the best in collegiate athletics”.  With this honor, Stewart becomes a finalist for the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year and the prestigious 2014 Honda Cup. Stewart was chosen by a vote of administrators from over 1,000 NCAA member schools. Finalists included Kayla McBride (Notre Dame), Chiney Ogwumike (Stanford), Odyssey Sims (Baylor) and Alyssa Thomas (Maryland).

“It is such an honor to be selected as the winner of the Honda Award for women’s basketball,” said Stewart. “ I would like to thank the administrators for selecting me over a group of outstanding players and my coaches and teammates for helping me get to this point where I can be considered for such prestigious honors.”

Named the 2014 Associated Press, Naismith, USBWA, espnW and American Athletic Conference Player of the Year, Stewart led Connecticut to an unprecedented ninth national championship and a 40-0 perfect season. The sophomore forward does some of her best work in the postseason after also collecting The American Tournament Most Outstanding Player (MOP) honor along with the NCAA Championship MOP award.

Stewart averaged 19.4 points, 8.1 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game for the Huskies. She has scored over 1,000 career points in the third-fewest amount of career games (63) in UConn history. In 40 wins, she scored in double-figures in 37 games and scored 20+ points on 21 different occasions.

“I am very happy for Breanna,” stated head coach Geno Auriemma. “She worked extremely hard during the offseason, and during the season, to improve on a great freshman year. It is truly rewarding to see hard work pay off for someone and no one is more deserving of this tremendous honor than Breanna Stewart.”

This is Connecticut’s second Honda Sport Award winner this year as Marie Elena Bolles captured the honor in Field Hockey after leading UConn to its first National title this year and a school-record third so far in the academic year.

The CWSA presents the Honda Sports Award annually to top women student-athletes in 12 NCAA-sanctioned sports.  Honda Sports award winners will be presented with the honor during on-campus presentations throughout the year and all Honda Sports award winners become a finalist for the prestigious 2014 Honda Cup award presented in June.

Basketball has produced the most Honda Cup award winners with 15 student-athletes in the sport winning the prestigious honor. Most recently Brittney Griner of Baylor earned the honor in 2012 preceded by Connecticut’s Maya Moore who had back-to-back wins in 2010 and 2011.

THE Collegiate Women Sports Awards has honored the nation’s top NCAA women athletes for 37 years, recognizing superior athletic skills, leadership, academic excellence and eagerness to participate in community service.   Since commencing its sponsorship in 1986, Honda has provided more than $2.7 million in institutional grants to the universities of the award winners and nominees to support women’s athletics programs at the institutions.

UConn’s Dolson and Hartley Selected in First Round of WNBA Draft

Stefanie Dolson (L), Bria Hartley (R)

STORRS, Conn.   – UConn senior center Stefanie Dolson has been selected by the Washington Mystics with the No. 6 pick while senior guard Bria Hartley was selected by the Seattle Storm with the seventh pick of the 2014 WNBA Draft, presented by State Farm.  The Draft was held Monday night at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.

Dolson and Hartley will be the 28th and 29th different former Huskies to play in the WNBA since the league’s inception in 1997.  UConn has now had a player selected in the WNBA Draft 15 times in the last 17 years.  UConn did not have any seniors on its roster in 2003 or 2007.  Dolson and Hartley are the 14th and 15th Huskies all-time to be selected in the first round of the WNBA Draft.

A two-time WBCA All-America selection, Dolson completed her career at UConn as one of the most dominant basketball players at the Division I level. A winner of two national championships, Dolson ranks first in UConn history with 152 starts, fourth in rebounds (1,101) and blocks (254) and 12th in total points (1,797). During her senior campaign in 2013-14, Dolson was named the WBCA Division I Defensive Player of the Year as was also tabbed as the 2013-14 American Conference Defensive Player of the Year and Sportsmanship Award winner.

Dolson, the 2013-14 Senior CLASS Award winner in NCAA Division I women’s basketball, was a critical piece of UConn’s title run this past season. She contributed 93 blocks, helping Connecticut set the NCAA team record for most single-season blocks (326).

In 2012-13, the center was named to the 2012-13 All-BIG EAST First Team and earned a spot on the 2012-13 Associated Press All-America Third Team.  As a sophomore, she was named to the 2011-12 Preseason Naismith Award Watch List and was placed on the 2011-12 BIG EAST All-Tournament Team.

During her career at UConn, the Huskies won 144 of 155 of their games and reached the Final Four in every season. The senior closed her career on a 46-game winning streak, dating back to the 2013 NCAA Tournament.

A two-time WBCA All-America selection, Hartley departs UConn after winning two National Championships and making four Final Four appearances as a four-year starter. The North Babylon,  N.Y. native etched her name into the Connecticut history books, finishing sixth in program history with 140 starts and 259 made three-pointers and ninth in total points (1,994).

A 2013-14 Associated Press Second Team All-America selection, Hartley was named as a finalist for the Wade and Wooden Awards and was named a USBWA All-American in her senior campaign. In 2012-13, she was named to the 2013 All-NCAA Tournament Team and led the Huskies in assists a team-high 16 times throughout the season.

As a sophomore, she was tabbed as both a 2011-12 WBCA/State Farm All-American and an All-BIG EAST First Team member. She burst on the women’s NCAA basketball scene in 2010-11 as the 2010-11 BIG EAST Rookie of the Year.

She joined elite company in her final season in Storrs, becoming just the third Husky, alongside Maya Moore and Diana Taurasi to amass 1,500 points/500 assists/500 rebounds.

UPDATE 10:15 p.m.: The duo will remain as teammates as Hartley was part of trade that sent her to the Washington Mystics.

Hartford’s XL Center To Host 2015 American Men’s Basketball Championship

XL Center in Hartford, CT

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Commissioner Mike Aresco has announced that the XL Center in Hartford, Conn., has been chosen as the site of the 2015 American Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Championship.

“We are pleased to bring our 2015 men’s basketball championship to the city of Hartford and to this outstanding arena,” said Aresco. “The success of UConn’s men’s and women’s teams this year has made Connecticut the center of college basketball nationally. This event will enjoy tremendous fan support and our visitors will enjoy the many attractions in Hartford and its surrounding communities.”

The XL Center has hosted a number of NCAA Championship men’s and women’s basketball games, was the site of the Big East Women’s Basketball Championship from 1994-2013 and previously served as a home site for the NBA’s Boston Celtics.

Aside from the many basketball events held at the XL Center, the facility is the home of the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League and hosted the NHL’s Hartford Whalers. The seating capacity for basketball at the XL Center is 16,294.

“Today’s announcement puts Hartford back in the basketball tournament business,” said Governor of Connecticut Dannel P. Malloy. “While this is great news for next year, I am even more excited for what this means in the future. I believe we can and should be in consideration for more NCAA tournament events, and I will continue to push to bring those games to our state. I want to thank the American Athletic Conference for making this decision.  I also want to send a message to college basketball fans everywhere – come to Hartford next March.  You won’t be disappointed.”

“We’re honored and proud to have been chosen to host this prestigious event,” said Global Spectrum’s Chris Lawrence, General Manager of the XL Center. “Through the commitment and unified approach of Global Spectrum, the Capital Region Development Authority, the city of Hartford and the downtown business community, we’re extremely excited and eager to showcase Hartford. Combined with our scheduled summer renovations and an ever-growing events calendar, the American Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Championship will highlight a resurgent XL Center.”

Dates for the 2015 championship will be announced in the coming weeks.

All 11 American Athletic Conference schools will participate in the 2015 championship. The format calls for three first-round games on the first day, followed by four quarterfinal games, two semifinals and the championship game. The ESPN Networks will provide television and digital coverage of the tournament.

The 2014-15 season will be the second straight year in which the American Athletic Conference has the defending men’s and women’s NCAA champions in its ranks. The American was the only conference to place a team in the semifinals of the Men’s Final Four, the Women’s Final Four, the NIT and the WNIT this past season.

The American’s membership in 2014-15 will comprise UCF, Cincinnati, UConn, East Carolina, Houston, Memphis, USF, SMU, Temple, Tulane and Tulsa.
