UCONN Men Run By St. Mary’s

After an eleven day layoff for final exams, the UCONN men ran over the St. Mary’s (CA) Gaels by the score of 89-73 on Sunday afternoon. UCONN was led by Jerome Dyson’s 19 points and Jeff Adrien’s 15 pts.

The Huskies showed some signs of rust early as their play was a little bit sloppy. After St Marys got to within two points, Gavin Edwards led the Huskies on an 11-2 run and they never looked back from there.

Notes and Observations:

  • The starters were Price, Dyson, Johnson, Thabeet, and Adrien
  • First person off the bench during the game was Jonathan Mandeldove, who at one time was thought to be redshirted. Although he only scored 2 pts in 13 minutes, his contribution was on the defensive end blocking 4 shots.
  • Speaking of blocked shots, Hasheem Thabeet blocked another 3 tonight. UCONN came into the game averaging 10.5 blocks a game to lead the nation. In the game, they had 13 blocks.
  • AJ Price was held scoreless in the first half. He did finish the game with 9 points, tied his career high with 8 assists, and added 3 rebounds and only 1 turnover.
  • Doug Wiggins’ didn’t score in double figures this game. He did add 8 pts to the cause.
  • UCONN for the game shot 51.6% from the floor.
  • UCONN’s free throw shooting percentage was a little better than normal. They were 23-35 from the line for 65.7%. This won’t get it done in the Big East especially at the end of the games. I will say this though. It is improving especially with Hasheem Thabeet who was 3 of 5 from the line.

Next up for the Huskies is the Waves of Pepperdine on Wednesday night at the Hartford Civic Center at 7:00 PM. The game will be broadcast on ESPNU.

Problems with J.D. Drew??

Well if you remember last week, J.D. Drew was supposed to be announced together with Julio Lugo as the newest members of the Boston Red Sox but wasn’t because of a formality in the contract language. This doesn’t seem to be the case though. It appears that there are problems with J.D. Drew’s shoulder and he may have failed his physical.

What does this mean for the Red Sox? Well tomorrow he is supposed to go for a second opinion on his right shoulder. The Red Sox will probably try now to renegotiate the contract with Drew.

Let’s hope this is just a minor issue for Drew and the Red Sox. To me, Drew is an important piece of the puzzle next season. Also there isn’t a RF left on the free agent market that is in the same class of J.D. Drew. Sorry Trot.

Knicks-Nuggets Fight

Well it’s a slow television night tonight and I was flipping thru the channels when I came across a fight between the NY Knicks and the Denver Nuggets. At the time, the Nuggets were leading by 18 points with about a minute and half to go when Mardy Collins of the Knicks picked up a flagrant foul against the Nuggets J.R. Smith. Smith did not take kind to the foul and went after Collins. Then little Nate Robinson went after Smith as well and their little battle spilled over into the front row behind the basket. In the midst of this happening, Carmelo Anthony came in and pushed Nate Richardson. Nate Robinson was then ready to go with anyone at that point. Then you can see Carmelo Anthony hitting Mardy Collins of the Knicks. On the replay on television, you could actually hear the punch hit Jefferies face. Then Jared Jefferies chased Carmelo Anthony down the court.

After the fracas ended, the refs got together and decided to eject all 10 players on the court. So this was the first time in NBA history that 10 players were ejected at one time. Given all that happened a few years ago at the Palace in Auburn Hills when the Pistons and Pacers had their infamous fight, that no spectators were involved in this one.

This is just another blackeye for the NY Knicks and the NBA. The Knicks already have enough problems as it is and now this. You can be sure that the Commish David Stern will not be lenient when it comes to the fines and suspensions.

Click here to watch the fight or you can watch a recap of the game below. The fight starts at the 1:28 mark of this video.

More Boston Red Sox News

I know what your expecting. You are expecting for me to tell you more about the Matsuzaka happenings. Well that’s not the case. On Friday, the Boston Red Sox announced they had traded minor league pitcher Phil Seibel to the Los Angeles Angels for relief pitcher Brendan Donnelly.

Donnelly was 6-0 last season with a 3.94 ERA. For his career, he has a 2.87 ERA and 1.16 WHIP (Walks/hits over innings pitched). Donnelly was also a member of the 2002 World Series championship team in Anaheim.

Also the Red Sox announced they had signed free agent J.C. Romero to a 1 yr contract worth $1.6 million. Minus a closer, the Red Sox bullpen is starting to take shape. They now have 2 lefties (Romero and Okajima), Mike Timlin, Donnelly, Craig Hansen, and Manny Declarman. Hansen is supposed to be the closer of the future but the Red Sox don’t think he’s ready to handle that so he will probably be used in a set up role. I wouldn’t be surprised if you see Jonathan Papelbon closing again next season in Boston.

On the radio side of things, the Red Sox announced that Dave O’Brien and Glen Geffner will join Joe Castiglione in the booth for the upcoming season. Dave O’Brien works for ESPN calling MLB, NCAA Basketball. He was also the lead announcer on the World Cup soccer games for ESPN this past year. Geffner will fill in for O’Brien when O’Brien has ESPN commitments.

Welcome to Beantown Matsuzaka

Well after a few days with a lot of twists and turns, Daisuke Matsuzaka was finally introduced to the media of Boston and also the national media as well. Here are some quotes from Dice-K:

“I’d like to contribute to the world championship,” Matsuzaka said. “I’d like to meet Curt Schilling.”

When asked about what he thought of Fenway Park:

“Very beautiful and very impressed, When the season starts, it’s going to be completed. I’m looking forward to that.”

And finally some quotes from everyone’s favorite General Manager, Theo Epstein:

“Today, what we’re really doing is announcing the signing of a national treasure,” general manager Theo Epstein said. “We understand his importance in Japan. We know what he represents.

“To the fans in Japan, we pledge to do everything we can to support Daisuke … and to ensure that he’ll be a success. Not that he needs much help,”

An interesting tidbit if your thinking about buying Red Sox opening day tickets for 2007. Matsuzaka is most likely to be the starter for opening day at Fenway against the Seattle Mariners. The first batter he will probably face is Ichiro. Interesting thought to ponder as we countdown to the start of spring training.

Larry Lucchino also stated that he would like for the Red Sox to go over and play games in Japan. So I guess in a few years, the Red Sox will probably open up their season in Japan. Just as long as they don’t bring Matsui over too. The Sox/Yanks rivalry only belongs in Boston and New York.

Matsuzaka Press Conference

The Boston Red Sox have scheduled a press conference for Thursday Dec 14th at 5 PM to announce the signing of Daisuke Matsuzaka. Matsuzaka, only 26 years old, will receive his #18 jersey (last worn by Johnny Damon), and I am sure he will answer questions from the Boston and National media.

Matsuzaka’s contract calls for a $2 million dollar signing bonus, $6 million for 2007, $8 million for 2008, 2009, 2010, and $10 million dollars for the last two seasons of the contract. It also includes $8 million dollars in escalators from awards which could bring the value of the contract to $60 million dollars. The final price tag to sign Matsuzaka was $103.11 million dollars or approximately 12,032,928,210 Yen. Yes that is 12 billion in Japanese Yen.

Boras told ESPN.com the contract includes a “litany of personal comforts.” Matsuzaka will get a massage therapist, physical therapist, interpreter and personal assistant, and the Red Sox agreed to provide the pitcher with 80-90 flights over the course of the deal, along with special housing and transportation arrangements and accomodations for his wife.

The deal was worked on while they all flew back from California where the Boston bigwigs had gone to try and sign Matsuzaka in a last ditch effort.. The deal was consummated when they arrived in Boston on Wednesday night.

This is a great deal for the Red Sox. Matsuzaka is the third 26 year old in the rotation. Beckett and Papelbon are the others. This essentially locks these young guns up for long term. Also remember the Red Sox will also have Jon Lester, who is 22 years old, returning to the team after his successful fight against cancer. Right now the Red Sox rotation in what I think the order will be is:

  1. Curt Schilling
  2. Daisuke Matsuzaka
  3. Josh Beckett
  4. Jonathan Papelbon
  5. Tim Wakefield

Look for the Red Sox to go after Roger Clemens now. The Sox have had their sites on him since last season when he was a free agent. If, and thats a big IF, sign Clemens, I’d look for the Sox to move Jonathan Papelbon back to the bullpen as the closer, where he was so successful before coming down with dead arm.

It is truly a glorious day in Red Sox Nation!
